Abstract:Sandwich-structured C@Fe3O4@C hybrids with Fe3O4 nanoparticles sandwiched between two conductive carbon layers have attracted more and more attention owing to enhanced synergistic effects for lithium-ion storage. In this work, an environment-friendly procedure is developed for the fabrication of sandwich-like C@Fe3O4@C dodecahedrons. Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8)-derived carbon dodecahedrons (ZIF-C) are used as the carbon matrix, on which iron precursors are homogeneously grown with the assistance of a polyelectrolyte layer. The subsequent polydopamine (PDA) coating and calcination give rise to the formation of sandwiched ZIF-C@Fe3O4@C. When being evaluated as the anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the obtained hybrid manifests a high reversible capacity (1194 mAh g−1 at 0.05 A g−1), good high-rate behavior (796 mAh g−1 at 10 A g−1), and negligible capacity loss after 120 cycles.
Multifunctional Hollow Porous Fe3O4@N-C Nanocomposites as Anodes of Lithium-Ion Battery, Adsorbents and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrates

Abstract:At present, it is still a challenge to prepare multifunctional composite nanomaterials with simple composition and favorable structure. Here, multifunctional Fe3O4@nitrogen-doped carbon (N-C) nanocomposites with hollow porous core-shell structure and significant electrochemical, adsorption and sensing performances were successfully synthesized through the hydrothermal method, polymer coating, then thermal annealing process in nitrogen (N2) and lastly etching in hydrochloric acid (HCl). The morphologies and properties of the as-obtained Fe3O4@N-C nanocomposites were markedly affected by the etching time of HCl. When the Fe3O4@N-C nanocomposites after etching for 30 min (Fe3O4@N-C-3) were applied as the anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the invertible capacity could reach 1772 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles at the current density of 0.2 A g-1, which is much better than that of Fe3O4@N-C nanocomposites etched, respectively, for 15 min and 45 min (948 mA h g-1 and 1127 mA h g-1). Additionally, the hollow porous Fe3O4@N-C-3 nanocomposites also exhibited superior rate capacity (950 mA h g-1 at 0.6 A g-1). The excellent electrochemical properties of Fe3O4@N-C nanocomposites are attributed to their distinctive hollow porous core-shell structure and appropriate N-doped carbon coating, which could provide high-efficiency transmission channels for ions/electrons, improve the structural stability and accommodate the volume variation in the repeated Li insertion/extraction procedure. In addition, the Fe3O4@N-C nanocomposites etched by HCl for different lengths of time, especially Fe3O4@N-C-3 nanocomposites, also show good performance as adsorbents for the removal of the organic dye (methyl orange, MO) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates for the determination of a pesticide (thiram). This work provides reference for the design and preparation of multifunctional materials with peculiar pore structure and uncomplicated composition.

Abstract:A facile and scalable strategy is developed to fabricate three dimensional core-shell Fe2O3 @ carbon/carbon cloth structure by simple hydrothermal route as binder-free lithium-ion battery anode. In the unique structure, carbon coated Fe2O3 nanorods uniformly disperse on carbon cloth which forms the conductive carbon network. The hierarchical porous Fe2O3 nanorods in situ grown on the carbon cloth can effectively shorten the transfer paths of lithium ions and reduce the contact resistance. The carbon coating significantly inhibits pulverization of active materials during the repeated Li-ion insertion/extraction, as well as the direct exposure of Fe2O3 to the electrolyte. Benefiting from the structural integrity and flexibility, the nanocomposites used as binder-free anode for lithium-ion batteries, demonstrate high reversible capacity and excellent cyclability. Abstract:A facile and scalable strategy for the synthesis of discrete, homogeneous and small (mostly 5–15 nm) Fe3O4 nanocrystals embedded in a partially graphitized porous carbon matrix was developed, which involved the simple mixing of a metal precursor (Fe(NO3)3·9H2O), a carbon precursor (C6H8O7), and a dispersant (NaCl) in an aqueous solution followed by calcination at 600 °C for 2 h under Ar. As the anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the Fe3O4/carbon composite with 55.24 wt% Fe3O4 exhibited superior electrochemical performances, such as high reversible lithium storage capacity (834 mA h g−1 at 1 C after 60 cycles, 1 C = 924 mA g−1), high Coulombic efficiency (100%), excellent cycling stability, and superior rate capability (588 mA h g−1 at 5 C and 382 mA h g−1 at 10 C). These excellent electrochemical performances could be attributed to the robust porous carbon matrix with a partially graphitized structure for embedding a mass of small Fe3O4 nanocrystals, which not only provided excellent electronic conductivity, short transportation length for both lithium ions and electrons, and enough elastic buffer space to accommodate volume changes upon lithium insertion/extraction, but also could effectively avoid agglomeration of the Fe3O4 nanocrystals and maintain the structural integrity of the electrode during the charge–discharge process. It is believed that the Fe3O4/carbon composite synthesized by the current method is a promising anode material for high energy and power density lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:3-Dimensional hierarchically porous ZnFe2O4/C composites with interconnected macropores and co-continuous hollow skeletons are facilely synthesized and used as anode materials for Li-ion batteries. The interconnected macropores impede the agglomeration of primary particles and buffer the volumetric variations, hollow mesoporous skeletons not only improve the interfacial contact area between electrode and electrolyte but also facilitate lithium ions transfer rate. Moreover, N-doped carbon layer further enhances the conductivity and mechanical strength of skeletons, as well as accelerates electron transfer during repeated discharge and charge process. The as-prepared 3-dimensional hierarchically porous ZnFe2O4/C composites possess excellent Li-ion storage properties, delivering a high reversible capacity of 972 mAh g(-1) at 200 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles and a decent specific capacity of 711 mAh g(-1) even at a large current density of 1000 mA g(-1) after 400 cycles. These values are among the highest reported for ZnFe2O4-based materials with different morphologies and nanostructures. The resultant ZnFe2O4/C composites display the potential practical application for high-performance Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Morphology-controlled Fe3O4/carbon nanocomposites were synthesized by a solvothermal reaction followed by calcination under a nitrogen atmosphere. Flower-like structures, dispersed nanoflakes and hollow,microspheres could be readily obtained by adjusting the concentrations of the reactants. Based on the time-dependent structure evolution, a possible mechanism for the formation of the different morphologies under various conditions was discussed. The lithium storage properties of the different Fe3O4/carbon composites were compared. The flower-like sample shows the best electrochemical performance with the highest specific capacity of 227 mAh/g at a current rate of 5 C while hollow microspheres and dispersed nanoflakes have specific capacities of only 45 and 10 mAh/g, respectively.

Abstract:Recently, Fe3O4-based materials have been widely studied as anodes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of the large theoretical capacity (924 mAh g(-1)) and environmental benignity. Unfortunately, these materials suffer from the low practical capacity and poor cycling stability. Herein, we developed a simple "soft-templating" approach to fabricate multiple Fe3O4 nanoparticles-embedded and N-doped hierarchically porous carbon nanospheres (Fe3O4@N-HPCNs) as anodes for LIBs by utilizing the self-assembly among polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, and hydrophobic Fe3O4 nanoparticles in oil/water system. The resultant Fe3O4@N-HPCNs present a well-defined spherical morphology, high specific surface area, and unique dual-mesoporous core structures with multiple Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the large-mesopore channels. More importantly, the Fe3O4@N-HPCNs anode exhibits high reversible specific capacities of 1240 mAh g(-1) (after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g(-1)) and 581 mAh g(-1) (after 400 cycles at 1 A g(-1)). Even at 10 A g(-1), a specific capacity of ca. 290 mAh g(-1) is still retained, indicating its excellent rate capability. Therefore, such a "soft-templating" approach is expected to provide us a new pathway to design and prepare other nanoparticles@porous carbon anodes for LIBs.

Abstract:Iron oxides are potential electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries because of their high theoretical capacities, low cost, rich resources, and their non-polluting properties. However, iron oxides demonstrate large volume expansion during the lithium intercalation process, resulting in the electrode material being crushed, which always results in poor cycle performance. In this paper, to solve the above problem, iron oxide/carbon nanocomposites with a hollow core–shell structure were designed. Firstly, an Fe2O3@polydopamine nanocomposite was prepared using an Fe2O3 nanocube and dopamine hydrochloride as precursors. Secondly, an Fe3O4@N-doped C composite was obtained by means of further carbonization treatment. Finally, Fe3O4@void@N-Doped C-x composites with core–shell structures with different void sizes were obtained by means of Fe3O4 etching. The effect of the etching time on the void size was studied. The electrochemical properties of the composites when used as lithium-ion battery materials were studied in more detail. The results showed that the sample that was obtained via etching for 5 h using 2 mol L−1 HCl solution at 30 °C demonstrated better electrochemical performance. The discharge capacity of the Fe3O4@void@N-Doped C-5 was able to reach up to 1222 mA g h−1 under 200 mA g−1 after 100 cycles.

Abstract:Fabrication of high performance silicon-based materials derived from natural biowastes plays a significant role in the green recycling of biomass resources. However, low utilization of organic component and poor lifespan hinders the its large scale applications. Herein, biomass derived SiOx/C-3 composite was encapsulated into Fe-N-C decorated carbon nanofibers network (Fe-N-C/SiOx/C-3) by a facile magnesiothermic reduction combined with electrostatic spinning strategy. The ingenious designed indirect contact biomass carbon/SiO2 interface effectively utilizes the organic components of rice husk and prevents the formation of SiC during reduction process. HAADF-STEM and XPS characterization confirmed the presence of Fe single atoms and the formation of Fe-N coordination bonds. Benefiting from the unique carbonaceous network and catalytic effect of Fe-N-C, the Fe-N-C/SiOx/C-3 exhibit excellent lithium storage properties (832.6 mAh g−1 after 250 cycles at 0.1 A g−1). Even at high current density (1 A g−1), the electrode can still remain a capacity of 602 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles with capacity retention of 79.4%. The ex-situ SEM and XPS characterizations demonstrated that the gradient structure consisting of inner biomass-derived carbon and flexible carbonaceous networks enhanced the overall conductivity and structural integrity of the composite. Furthermore, the catalytic effect of Fe-N-C facilitates the rapidly formation of stable LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) films during charge/discharge process. The assembled LiFePO4‖Fe-N-C/SiOx/C-3 full cell shows excellent electrochemical performance (106.5 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 0.1A g−1), which provides insights into the fabrication of high performance biomass derived silicon based anodes.

Abstract:3D hollow hybrid composites with ultrafine cobalt sulfide nanoparticles uniformly embedded within the well-graphitized porous carbon polyhedra/carbon nanotubes framework are rationally fabricated using a green and one-step method involving the simultaneous pyrolysis and sulfidation of ZIF-67. Abstract:A new nanocomposite system based on Fe3O4 nanoparticles confined in three-dimensional (3D) dual-mode cubic porous carbon is developed using the nanocasting and wet-impregnation methods to assess its performance as an anode for lithium-ion batteries. Several Fe3O4 precursor concentrations are chosen to optimize and determine the best-performing nanocomposite composition. The cubic mesoporous carbon CMK-9 offers a better ability for the Fe3O4 nanoparticles to be accommodated inside the mesopores, efficiently buffering the variation in volume and equally enhancing electrode/electrolyte contact for rapid charge and mass transfer. Among the prepared nanocomposites, the Fe3O4(13)@C9 anode delivers an excellent reversible discharge capacity of 1222 mA h g−1 after 150 cycles at a current rate of 100 mA g−1, with a capacity retention of 96.8% compared to the fourth cycle (1262 mA h g−1). At a higher current rate of 1000 mA g−1, the nanocomposite anode offers a superior discharge capacity of 636 mA h g−1 beyond 300 cycles. The present study reveals the use of a 3D mesoporous carbon material as a scaffold for anchoring Fe3O4 nanoparticles with impressive potential as an anode for new-generation lithium-ion batteries.
Porous carbon assisted carbon nanotubes supporting Fe<sub>3</sub>O4 nanoparticles for improved lithium storage

Abstract:Herein, to efficiently improve the lithium storage of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, a distinctive porous carbon (PC) assisted carbon nanotubes (CNTs) supporting architecture has been designed and fabricated successfully. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles are deposited on the surface of CNTs and then covered by an extra PC. In such a designed architecture, highly conductive and robust CNTs can not only improve the conductivity but also boost the structure of the as-fabricated Fe3O4-based composite (CNTs@Fe3O4@PC). In particular, the foam-like PC has a certain level of volume elasticity and open tunnel-like structure to better anchor the Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of CNTs and facilitate the transfer of electrons and ions, therefore guaranteeing the fast kinetics and longterm stability. The results show that the capacitive contribution is predominant in lithium storage of the CNTs@Fe3O4@PC electrode. Consequently, the as-fabricated CNTs@Fe3O4@PC shows high capacity, good rate capability, and long life, displaying 766 and 572 mAh g-1 after 400 and 700 cycles at 200 and even 1000 mA g-1, respectively. Thus outstanding performance makes the CNTs@Fe3O4@PC have great potential to be advanced lithium-ion battery anode materials. Furthermore, this strategy can be extended to other nanostructured metal oxide anodes, such as CoO, SnO2, and Bi2O3 nanomaterials.

Abstract:Fe/Fe3O4/N-carbon composite consisting of a porous carbon matrix containing a highly conductive N-doped graphene-like network and Fe/Fe3O4 nanoparticles was prepared. The porous carbon has a hierarchical structure which is inherited from rice husk and the N-doped graphene-like network formed in situ. When used as an anode material for lithium batteries, the composite delivered a reversible capacity of approximately 610 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 200 mA g(-1) even after 100 cycles, due to the synergism between the unique hierarchical porous structures, highly electrically conductive N-doped graphene- like networks and nanosized particles of Fe/Fe3O4. This work provides a simple approach to prepare N-doped porous carbon activated nanoparticle composites which could be used to improve the electrochemical performance of lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:To solve the common problems of intrinsically poor electrical conductivity and drastic volume expansion of the Fe2O3 anode in lithium-ion batteries, we synthesized porous Fe2O3 heterostructural nanosheets with β-Fe2O3/α-Fe2O3 by simple pyrolyzing of iron(III) ethylene diamine tetra acetate (Fe-EDTA) precursor and subsequently washing to remove NaCl particles formed in situ. Porous Fe2O3 nanosheets combining the advantages of large-area porous structure and β-Fe2O3/α-Fe2O3 heterostructure as an anode showed improved lithium ion storage performance. The porous nanosheets exhibited a high reversible capacity (1131.1 mA h g−1 at a current density of 1.0 A g−1 after 300 cycles), and a remarkable rate capability of 505 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1.

Abstract:Designing sandwich-like hybrid nanosheets with a porous structure effectively improves the electrochemical performance of graphene-based materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to the mitigated restack of graphene and decreased diffusion distance of Li+ ions for electron storage. Herein, a novel composite of active Fe2O3 nanoparticles encapsulated in g-C3N4/graphene hybrid nanosheets (Fe2O3/CN-G) has been developed, in which the 2D sandwich-type hybrid nanosheets constructed using porous g-C3N4 and highly conductive graphene offer readily accessible channels and sufficient conductive pathways for ionic diffusion and charge transport. This unique architecture greatly inhibits the restacking or aggregation of graphene and ensures the stability of electro-active Fe2O3 nanoparticles. Benefiting from these intriguing features, the as-prepared Fe2O3/CN-G as an anode for LIBs shows excellent electrochemical behaviors, including considerably large reversible capacity (1023 mA h g(-1)), great coulombic efficiency (97.6%), strong durability and comparable rate performance. Therefore, the work described here can provide a new insight for designing high-performance electrode materials with a porous and sandwich-type hybrid structure for application in LIBs.
Synthesis Of Self-Stacked Cufe2o4-Fe2o3 Porous Nanosheets As A High Performance Li-Ion Battery Anode

Abstract:Self-stacked CuFe2O4-Fe2O3 porous nanosheets were prepared via a facile polyol-mediated route followed by calcination. Because of its highly porous structures and good electrical and ion conductivity of the well-dispersed CuFe2O4 phase in the matrix, the hybrid material exhibits high specific capacity of 910 mA h g(-1) at 0.5 C after 200 cycles, superior capacity retention (0.02% capacity loss per cycle) and good rate capability (417 mA h g(-1) at 4 C) as a promising anode material for Li-ion batteries.
In Situ Ion–Exchange Synthesis of Fe3O4 Nanosheets with 3D Hierarchically Porous Carbon Frameworks for High‐Performance Energy Storage

Abstract:Batteries dominate the market of electrochemical energy‐storage (EES) devices but suffer from low solid‐state ion‐diffusion kinetics. Herein, a facile strategy is presented to fabricate 2D Fe3O4 nanosheets with 3D hierarchically porous carbon (HPC) frameworks for high‐rate lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium‐ion batteries (NIBs). These materials are achieved via a simple in situ ion–exchange process followed by a traditional carbonization–activation treatment, which is inspired by the ion intake and anchoring mechanisms of natural seaweeds. The resulting Fe3O4/HPC nanohybrids running at a high rate of 5 A g−1 can deliver high capacities of 418 and 144 mA h g−1 as the anodes of LIBs and NIBs, over 7.3 and 4.3 times those of their counterparts without porous structures. The Fe3O4/HPC also exhibits stable cycle life (≈114% and 93% retention after 1000 cycles at a high current density of 5 A g−1 for LIBs and NIBs, respectively), surpassing the most Fe3O4‐based batteries ever reported. This is attributed to the well‐controlled size of Fe3O4 nanosheets with the robust and interconnected 3D HPC frameworks that facilitate charge transport. Herein, a new strategy is provided to assemble 2D metal oxides onto a unique 3D architecture, generating electrodes for high‐performance EES devices.
