Abstract:The electrochemical performance of composite materials can be effectively improved by regulating multiple components and designing well-defined microstructure. In this work, FeS/ZnS composites with different Fe/Zn ratios were prepared through a facile wet chemical method. The as-prepared sulfide composite with molar ratio Fe/Zn = 1 exhibits optimal nanoflower morphology and achieves a high specific capacity as sodium-ion battery anode with reversible capacity of 475.1 mA h g-1 after 50 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g-1. Moreover, even at a high current density of 2000 mA g-1, a stable capacity of 207.6 mA h g-1 can be obtained. The superior electrochemical performance can be attributed to the design of optimal nanoflower structure through the regulation of Fe/Zn ratio, and the nanostructure can efficiently buffer volume change during discharge-charge, shorten Na+ diffusion pathways, promote the electrode/electrolyte contact, and thus render the sulfide composite FeS/ZnS a promising anode material for advanced sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Zinc sulfide (ZnS) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its high theoretical capacity, abundance, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness. Herein, hydrangea-like ZnS-carbon composite (ZnS-NC) is synthesized through the hydrothermal method and subsequent pyrolysis of a supramolecular precursor guanosine. The resulting composite comprises ultrafine ZnS nanoparticles firmly stabilized onto a nitrogen-doped carbon matrix, featuring mesoporous channels and high surface areas. When utilized as an anode material for LIBs, the initial discharging specific capacity of the ZnS-NC electrode reaches an impressive 944 mA h g−1 at 1.0 A g−1, and even after 450 cycles, it maintains a reversible capacity of 597 mA h g−1. Compared with pure ZnS, the ZnS-NC composite exhibits significantly improved rate performance and cycling stability. This enhancement in Li-storage performance can be attributed to a synergistic effect within the ZnS-NC composite, which arises from the large exposed active site area, efficient ion/electron transfer, and strong interaction between the ZnS nanoparticles and the carbon framework. Overall, this work presents an eco-friendly approach to developing metal sulfide-carbon composites with exceptional potential for energy storage applications.

Abstract:SnSb–(ZnO)x (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8) composite anode materials were prepared by a chemical coprecipitation method. Their microstructures and morphologies were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM); the electrochemical performance was investigated by constant current charging–discharging, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The specific initial charge and discharge capacities of the synthesized SnSb–(ZnO)0.4 composite anode material were 801.6 mA h g−1 and 1064.6 mA h g−1, respectively, while the initial coulombic efficiency was 75.3%. The capacity remained at 751 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles and the capacity retention ratio was 92.5%, which demonstrated excellent electrochemical performance. The addition of ZnO significantly improved the electrochemical properties of the SnSb alloy, especially for the cycling stability and rate capability of the composite materials.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur batteries have attracted significant attention recently due to their high theoretical capacity, energy density and cost effectiveness. However, sulfur cathodes suffer from issues such as shuttle effects, uncontrollable deposition of lithium sulfides species, and volume expansion of sulfur, which result in rapid capacity fading and low Coulombic efficiency. In recent years, metal-oxide nanostructures have been widely used in Li–S batteries, owing to their effective inhibition of the shuttle effect and controlled deposition of lithium sulfide. However, the nonconductive metal-oxides used in Li–S batteries suffer from extra diffusion process, which slows down the electrochemical reaction kinetics. Herein, we report the synthesis of carbon nanoflakes decorated with conductive aluminium-doped zinc oxide (AZO@C) nanoparticles, through a facile biotemplating method using kapok fibers as both the template and carbon source. A sulfur cathode based on the AZO@C nanocomposites shows better electrochemical performance than those of cathodes based on ZnO and Al2O3 with poor conductivity, with a stable capacity of 927 mAh·g−1 at 0.1C (1C = 1,675 mA·g−1) after 100 cycles. A reversible capacity of 544 mAh·g−1 after 300 cycles was obtained even after increasing the current density to 0.5C, with a 0.039% capacity decay per cycle under a sulfur loading of 3.3 mg·cm−2. Moreover, a capacity of 466 mAh·g−1 after 100 cycles at 0.5C could still be obtained when the sulfur loading was increased to 6.96 mg·cm−2. The excellent electrochemical performance of the AZO@C/S composite can be attributed to its high conductivity of the polar AZO host, which suppresses the shuttle effect while simultaneously improving the redox kinetics in the reciprocal transformation of lithium sulfide species.

Abstract:A novel generalizable strategy is proposed by Y. Yu and co-workers in article 1500200 for fabrication of a 3D porous interconnected metal sulfide/carbon nanocomposite by the electrostatic spray deposition technique. Such a technique is simple but versatile and can be easily applied to other compounds. The obtained SnS/C composite exhibits a high reversible capacity, high rate capability and long cycling stability for both lithium and sodium storage.

Abstract:Abstract Transition metal sulfides have been widely used as anode electrodes of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity and low price. However, problems of huge volume expansion and poor conductivity during charging and discharging have been emerged. Herein, we design a N, C-co-doped, nano-sized, and hollow carbon-coated ZnS (ZnS-NC@C) composite using the advantages of metal organic framework (zeolitic imidazolate framework-8) structure and resorcinol-formaldehyde coating. When applied as anodes of LIBs and SIBs, it displays a high reversible capacity of 748 and 150.9 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at the current density of 1.0 A g −1 , respectively. This work could provide a promising strategy for enhancing the performance of transition metal sulfides for potential applications in LIBs and SIBs.

Abstract:Owing to compositional advantages of the high theoretical capacity and 3D porous nanoarchitecture, the strategies for coupling of metal sulfide and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived carbon materials have drawn considerable attention for high performance lithium storage. Herein, we present SnS decorated zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 derived ZnS/3D porous carbon composite (denoted as ZnS/PC) using the vacuum quartz capsule-assisted decoration method (denoted as ZnS/SnS/PC). In the composite, 3D-porous carbon could play the part of a conductive matrix as well as the buffer support for volume variation, while the decoration of ZnS/PC with SnS could provide abundant redox reactions, which could reinforce the storage properties and ions/electrons transfer driving force of ZnS/PC. Significantly, the synergistic coupling effect between the mixed metal sulfides and robust carbon matrix could further improve the electrochemical behavior. When compared with ZnS/PC anode for lithium-ion battery, ZnS/SnS/PC composite manifests obvious improvement in electrochemical performance for lithium storage, as well as appreciable lithium storage properties in a full lithium-ion battery.

Abstract:Bimetallic sulfides have been attracted much attention as promising materials due to their excellent electrochemical performance and efficient energy storage in secondary batteries. Here we report ZnMoS4-x compound and associated ZnMoS4-x/C composites synthesized via supercritical water method as anode materials for high-capacity Li ion storage. The one-step preparation of ZnMoS4-x compound and ZnMoS4-x/C composites employing supercritical water as reaction media is easily-accessible, low-cost and environment-benign. Through situ-modifying from glucose carbonization, ZnMoS4-x/C composite with unique nanocoral structural framework retains the large capacity of pure bimetallic sulfides and exhibits improved long-cycle stability as anodes in lithium-ion batteries. Specifically, ZnMoS4-x/C delivers reversible capacity of 931.1 mAh g−1 after 70 cycles at current density of 100 mA g−1. And at high current density of 1500 mA g−1, it also exhibits an excellent capacity of 640.2 mAh g−1 even after 500 cycles. This work characteristic of environmental and accessible strategy would inspire meaningful impact upon synthesizing functional bimetallic sulfides electrode materials with high electrochemical performances.

Abstract:Two-dimensional tungsten disulfide (WS2) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries. The further development of WS2 is restricted by the defects of electrical conductivity and structural stability. Here, a bimetallic sulfide/carbon composite WS2-X/CoS@C was prepared by a facile one-step MOFs-engaged method. The WS2/CoS heterojunctions and sulfur vacancies were introduced into the material, which improved the electronic/ionic diffusion kinetics of the composite. A large number of honeycomb carbon nanotubes were formed on the surface of the composite, which could effectively increase the specific surface area and enhance the conductivity of the composite. The WS2-X/CoS@C electrode exhibited excellent electrochemical performance used as an anode for lithium-ion battery. The initial discharge capacity of the WS2-X/CoS@C delivered 936 mAh/g at 100 mA/g and retained high discharge capacity of 600 mAh/g at 200 mA/g after the 100 cycles.Graphical abstract

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical ZnS‐SnS‐Sb2S3@C (ZTAS@C) submicron box has been successfully prepared via a facile cation‐exchange strategy and is used as advanced anode for Li‐ion batteries. The composition and morphology of the as‐prepared samples are measured by XRD, SEM and TEM respectively. In addition, the as‐synthesized hollow ZTAS@C architecture delivers rate capability of 1001, 862, 765, 621, and 419 mAh·g−1 at 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 A·g‐1 respectively, and maintains reversible specific capacity of 581 mAh·g−1 after 100 cycles at 1.0 A·g‐1 with the high CE value around almost 100%. Since 1 mol Sb2S3 could hold 4.8 times more Li+ ions than ZnS, the as‐synthesized ZTAS@C delivers 2~3 times more specific capacity than the un‐treated ZnS‐SnS@C sample without cation‐exchange during electrochemical testing. Moreover, the cycled ZTAS@C could maintain a relatively complete microscopic morphology of the submicron box with a lower electrode expansion rate of ~131 %. Owing to synergistic effects between ZnS‐SnS‐Sb2S3, such as stable structure from ZnS, faster ionic conductivity from SnS and higher capacity from Sb2S3 (theoretically 947 mAh/g), ZTAS@C anode showed excellent electrochemical enhancements as using for LIBs anode. Therefore, the cation exchange strategy should be a facile way to improve the rate performance and cycle stability of multi‐metals sulfide composites.

Low-Cost Synthetic Honeycomb-like Carbon Derived from Cotton as a Sulfur Host for the Enhanced Electrochemical Performances of Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur batteries with high-energy density are witnessed to be the most prospective next-generation advanced batteries. Nonetheless, the existing issues of the serious shuttle effect and insulating property restrict their further applications. Herein, a honeycomb-like porous carbon derived from cotton is designed and prepared as a sulfur host to overcome the abovementioned problems. The cotton carbon carbonized at 700 °C acquires plentiful mesopores/macropores and displays a high surface area (458.85 m2 g–1). The C/S composite shows a relatively high capacity of 1271 mAh g–1 for the first cycle at 100 mA g–1. The carbon treated at 600 °C possesses abundant carbon–oxygen groups, which is beneficial for chemical adsorption of soluble polysulfides. The high-sulfur-loading (74 wt %) C/S electrode exhibits long-span cycling stability over 200 cycles. Benefiting from the excellent conductivity of cross-linked carbon fibers and the unique porous structure for trapping sulfur as well as the polysulfides, the cotton C/S composites exhibit superior properties for advanced lithium–sulfur batteries.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:To circumvent the poor cycling stability of 2D layered metal sulfide, a novel yolk-shell hydrangea-like SnSb-S microflower composite self-assembled by nanosheets, was successfully designed and fabricated as anode material for sodium-ion batteries. Without any introduction of carbonaceous materials, the Sn-SbS microflower composite could possess prominent sodium-ion storage properties through constructing Sb-rich phase with superior cycling stability as the protective shell to envelop the higher-capacity yolk Sn-rich phase. The yolk-shell Sn-Sb-S microflower composite exhibits a first discharge capacity of 1601.1 mAh/g. A highly reversible capacity of >600 mAh/g with a favorable and safe average voltage of similar to 0.6 V was achieved, constituting a promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries. Abstract:Lithium sulfide (Li2S) is regarded as a promising cathode material for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries in terms of its high theoretical specific capacity of 1166 mAh g(-1) and good compatibility with lithium metal-free anodes. However, Li2S suffers from poor cycling stability and rate capability resulted from the serious shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides and its low electronic and ionic conductivity. Here, we present a facile ball milling combined with carbon coating method to synthesize porous carbon-coated Li2S (Li2S@C) composites with a high Li2S content by using polystyrene (PS) as a carbon precursor. The Li2S@C composites show a high reversible specific capacity of 676 mAh g(-1) (equal to 971 mAh g(-1) sulfur) after 3 cycles at the current density of 0.1 A g(-1), superior cycling stability with an average decay rate of 0.18% per cycle over 200 cycles, and improved rate capability of 416 mAh g(-1) at the current density of 1.0 A g(-1). The enhanced electrochemical properties of Li2S can be attributed to the porosity and core-shell structure of the Li2S@C composites, which increased the electronic and ionic conductivity of Li2S and alleviated the shuttle effect of intermediate lithium polysulfides in the discharge/charge process. Abstract:Redox kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) conversion and poor electrical conductivity of sulfur during the charge-discharge process greatly inhibit the commercialization of high-performance lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Herein, we synthesized CoSe2 porous hollow flowers (CoSe2-PHF) by etching and further selenizing layered double hydroxide, which combined the high catalytic activity of transition metal compound and high electrical conductivity of selenium. The obtained CoSe2-PHF can efficiently accelerate the catalytic conversion of LiPSs, expedite the electron transport, and improve utilization of active sulfur during the charge-discharge process. As a result, with CoSe2-PHF/S-based cathodes, the Li–S batteries exhibited a reversible specific capacity of 955.8 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C and 766.0 mAh g−1 at 0.5 C, along with a relatively small capacity decay rate of 0.070% per cycle within 400 cycles at 1 C. Even at the high rate of 3 C, the specific capacity of 542.9 mAh g−1can be maintained. This work enriches the way to prepare porous composites with high catalytic activity and electrical conductivity as sulfur hosts for high-rate, long-cycle rechargeable Li–S batteries.

In Situ Embedment of ZnS Nanocrystals in High Porosity Carbon Fibers as an Advanced Anode Material for Efficient Lithium Storage

Abstract:ZnS is a promising material for lithium-ion battery anodes due to its abundant natural resources, simplicity of synthesis, and high theoretical lithium storage capacity. However, it needs to be optimized for its low conductivity and volume effect during the charge–discharge process. The traditional method of combining with carbonaceous materials is usually laborious, and the required sulfuration process may possibly result in the destruction of materials morphology. In this study, hybrid materials formed by the combination of ZnS nanocrystals and high porosity carbon fibers were synthesized by one-step electrospinning using zinc diethyldithiocarbamate and polyacrylonitrile as raw materials and poly (ethylene glycol)—block-poly (propylene glycol)—block-poly (ethylene glycol) as template. The method is simple and avoids the influence of sulfuration process on the morphology of materials. The composite presents a specific capacity of 592.2 mAh g −1 under a current density of 1 A g −1 after 1000 cycles. The porous structure significantly decreases the diffusion mean-free path of Li + and inhibits the volume effect associated with the lithium storage process of ZnS. In addition, the 3D cross-linked carbon fibers improve the conductivity of materials. This study can serve as an inspiration for the development of other lithium storage composites.
