Abstract:Wear failure occurs locally on the surface of forging die. The conventional strategy of strengthening the entire surface of mold is thereby inefficient. In this work, the wear resistance after thermal fatigue of forging die was investigated by means of biomimetic laser remelting technology, which was designed according to surface stress simulation. It indicates that the wear performance differs between varying bionic models (stripe or grid) and area ratio (40, 60 and 80%), thus leading to an obvious trend of wear resistance. The relationship between surface stress, bionic model and wear resistance is discussed, together with the influence of processing density. As a result, in each case, wear resistance of specimen increases with processing density, despite the completely remelted specimen involving a different trend. It is found that the grid-coupled surface with area ratio = 80% exhibits higher wear resistance as compared with other specimens. Furthermore, the wear test demonstrates that, even with the same area ratio, wear resistance still differs between varied bionic models, due to the different distribution of abrasives and surface stress, thus enabling the grid-coupled bionic surface to possess superior wear resistance. The combination of different bionic models and area ratio results in good wear resistance after thermal fatigue, reasonable surface stress distribution, and practical processing efficiency, indicating that this technology will provide great potential to make novel and flexible structures.
