Abstract:Pure MoS2 and MoS2 compounds were doped with Co using a hydrothermal method. XRD results indicate that two of the five diffraction peak results at 9.2 degrees and 18.2 degrees may be attributed to low crystallinity of MoS2. The (002) diffraction peaks for the Co-doped MoS2 shifted to smaller angle, which may be due to the Mo4+ ions (r = 0.65 angstrom) having been replaced by larger Co2+ ions (r = 0.74 angstrom). Raman results show that the intensity of the A(1g) mode was greater than that of the E-2g(1) mode for our samples; this indicates that the samples have edge-terminated structures and possess more electrocatalytic active sites. The results of XPS also confirm that the cobalt ions substituted molybdenum atoms into the lattice of MoS2. Results from the electrocatalytic test confirms that cobalt doping reduces the charge transfer resistance and increases the electrocatalytic active sites, which are conducive to improving its electrocatalytic performance.
Doping-Induced Enhancement of Hydrogen Evolution at MoS2 Electrodes

Abstract:Rate theory and DFT calculations of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on MoS2 with Co, Ni and Pt impurities show the significance of dihydrogen (H2*) complex where both hydrogen atoms are interacting with the surface. Stabilization of such a complex affects the competing Volmer-Heyrovsky (direct H2 release) and Volmer-Tafel (H2* intermediate) pathways. The resulting evolution proceeds with a very small overpotential for all dopants ( η ${\eta }$ =0.1 to 0.2 V) at 25 % edge substitution, significantly reduced from the already low η ${\eta }$ =0.27 V for the undoped edge. At full edge substitution, Co-MoS2 remains highly active ( η ${\eta }$ =0.18 V) while Ni- and Pt-MoS2 are deactivated ( η ${\eta }$ =0.4 to 0.5 V) due to unfavorable interaction with H2*. Instead of the single S-vacancy, the site of intrinsic activity in the basal plane was found to be the undercoordinated central Mo-atom in threefold S-vacancy configurations, enabling hydrogen evolution with η ${\eta }$ =0.52 V via a H2* intermediate. The impurity atoms interact favorably with the intrinsic sulfur vacancies on the basal plane, stabilizing but simultaneously deactivating the triple vacancy configuration. The calculated shifts in overpotential are consistent with reported measurements, and the dependence on doping level may explain variations in experimental observations.

Abstract:In the field of hydrogen production, MoS2 demonstrates good catalytic properties for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which improve when doped with metal cations. However, while the role of sulfur atoms as active sites in the HER is largely reported, the role of the metal atoms (i.e. molybdenum or the dopant cations) has yet to be studied in depth. To understand the role of the metal dopant, we study MoS2 thin films doped with Co and Mn ions. We identify the contribution of the electronic bands of the Mn and Co dopants to the integral valence band of the material using in-situ resonant photoemission measurements. We demonstrate that Mn and Co dopants act differently: Mn doping favors the shift of the S-Mo hybridized band towards the Fermi level, while in the case of Co doping it is the less hybridized Co band that shifts closer to the Fermi level. Doping with Mn increases the effectiveness of S as the active site, thus improving HER, while doping with Co introduces the metallic site of Co as the active site, which results less effective in improving HER properties.We therefore clarify the role of the dopant cation in the electronic structure determining the active site for hydrogen adsorption/desorption. Our results pave the way for the design of efficient materials for hydrogen production via the doping route, which can be extended to different catalytic reactions in the field of energy applications.

Abstract:Lack of effective strategies to regulate the internal activity of MoS(2)limits its practical application for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). Doping of heteroatoms without forming aggregation or an edge enrichment is still challenging, and its effect on the HER needs to be further explored. Herein, a two-step method is developed to obtain multi-metal-doped H-MoS2, which includes intercalation of the layered MoO(3)precursor with a following sulfurization. Benefiting from the capability of the intercalation method to uniformly and simultaneously introduce different elements into the van der Waals gap, this method is universal to obtain multi-heteroatoms co-doped MoS(2)without forming clusters, phase separation, and an edge enrichment. It is demonstrated that the doping of adjacent cobalt and palladium monomers on MoS(2)greatly enhances the HER catalytic activity. The overpotential at 10 mA cm(-2)and Tafel slope of Co and Pd co-doped MoS(2)is found to be 49.3 mV and 43.2 mV dec(-1), respectively, representing a superior acidic HER catalytic activity. This intercalation-assisted method also provides a new and general strategy to synthesize uniformly doped transition metal dichalcogenides for various applications.
Mutually Enhanced Catalytic Activity of Doped Cobalt in Porous MoS2 for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:In molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), cobalt (Co) doping is an effective way to introduce catalytic active sites on the basal plane. For improving their capability of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), it is desirable to produce more active sites and endow them with highly electrocatalytic activity. In this work, we used silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanospheres as template to prepare porous Co-doped MoS2 with different Co content. We found that the prepared porous catalyst has improved the catalytic performance. Furthermore, the increase in Co content not only increases the number of active sites, but also can improve the activity for each Co atom. First-principle calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) suggest that this mutually enhanced activity originates from the shift of the density of state (DOS) of the vertical d[Formula: see text] orbital near the Fermi energy level caused by the interaction among the Co atoms.

Abstract:Strategies for harmonizing the construction of an active site and the building of electron transport for a hybrid MoS2 catalyst are crucial for its application in electrochemical reactions. In this work, an accurate and facile hydrothermal strategy was proposed to fabricate the active center of Co-O-Mo on a supported MoS2 catalyst by forming a CoMoSO phase on the edge of MoS2, yielding (Co-O)x- MoSy (x = 0, 0.3, 0.6, 1, 1.5, or 2.1). The results show that the electrochemical performances (hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and electrochemical degradation) of the yielded MoS2-based catalysts were positively correlated with the Co-O bonds, verifying the significant role of Co-O- Mo as the active center. The fabricated (Co-O)-MoS0.9 presented an extremely low overpotential and Tafel slope in both HER and OER, and it also demonstrated excellent BPA removal in the electrochemical degradation reaction. As compared with the Co-Mo-S configuration, the configuration of Co-O-Mo not only serves as the active center but also provides a conducting channel to facilitate electron conductivity with more accessible charge transfer at the electrode/electrolyte interface, which is favorable for electrocatalytic reaction. This work offers a new perspective for the active mechanism of metallic-heteroatom-dopant electrocatalysts and further boosts research on the development of noble/non-noble hybrid electrocatalysts in the future.

K Intercalation-Assisted Co-Doped MoS2 Nanoflowers for an Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:2D transition metal disulfides have emerged as promising Pt-alternative electrocatalysts for hydrogen generation. However, the sluggish water dissociation kinetics and limited active sites hinder their performance in alkaline media. Herein, we propose a two-step hydrothermal method to synthesize K intercalation-assisted Co-doped MoS2 nanoflowers. These nanoflowers exhibit an overpotential of only 67 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), which exceeds that of pristine MoS2 (143 mV). We demonstrated that the intercalation of K enlarges the interlayer spacing of MoS2 nanosheets and facilitates the doping of Co. The incorporation of Co effectively improves the surface charge transfer efficiency of MoS2 and accelerates water splitting with an energy barrier of 0.12 eV. This work offers an approach to activate the inert MoS2 basal plane by chemical intercalation and atomic doping coengineering. It can be extended to develop other functional materials beyond water splitting.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been considered a promising high-efficiency, low-cost hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst in acidic and alkaline media. However, the lack of active sites in the basal plane become the most significant obstacle hindering the widespread application of MoS2. Here, we systematically studied the HER performance of MoS2 plane or edge by co-doping Co atom and other 3d transition metals (TM = Ti–Fe, Ni) by density functional theory calculation methods. Interestingly, the dual atoms doping in both the basal plane and edges of MoS2 is a feasible fabrication with small or negative formation energies. Compared with the pristine MoS2 electrocatalyst, the HER performance in these doped systems is largely enhanced in both basal plane and edges due to the effective charge regulation on the S site by dual atom doping. Remarkably, close to zero H adsorption free energy (ΔGH = −0.161–0.119 eV) is identified for the TM-Co co-doped MoS2 basal, indicating that they are potential alternate HER electrocatalysts of Pt. Our study provides a new strategy to design highly efficient non-noble metal electrocatalysts accessibility for energy-related applications.

Abstract:In this work, we systematically investigate the possible H adsorption sites, charge density difference, partial density of states, p-band center and Bader charge of transition metal (TM) and nitrogen (N) co-doped monolayer MoS2. The results show that the equilibrium of H adsorption and desorption can be achieved in TM-N co-doped monolayer MoS2. The ΔGH at the S site of Co-N co-doped system is −0.05 eV, which is better than that of traditional Pt site (ΔGH=-0.09 eV) and Mo site at the MoS2 edge (ΔGH=0.08 eV). This work has important implications for designing more efficient electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal doped Molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) has been synthesized through hydrothermal method. The layer distance of MoS2 has not changed due to the tiny doping amount of metal element while the hydrogen evolution catalytic performance has been modified. The structure and morphology has been observed through SEM and XRD pattern. Hydrogen evolution reaction has been carried out in a standard three electrode system and the results showed that doped MoS2 performed good catalytic activity. Both Co and Fe showed obvious improvement in the catalytic performance.

Abstract:Activating MoS2 with atomic metal doping is promising to harvest desirable Pt-matched hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic performance. Herein, we developed an efficient method to access edge-rich lattice-distorted MoS2 for highly efficient HER via in-situ sulphuration of atomic Co/Mo species that were well-dispersed in a formamide-derived N-doped carbonaceous (f-NC) substrate. Apart from others, pre-embedding Co/Mo species in f-NC controls the release of metal sources upon annealing in S vapor, grafting the as-made MoS2 with merits of short-range crystallinity, distorted lattices, rich defects, and more edges exposed. The content of atomic Co species embedded in MoS2 reaches up to 2.85 at.%, and its atomic dispersion has been systematically confirmed by using XRD, HRTEM, XPS, and XAS characterizations. The Co-doped MoS2 sample exhibits excellent HER activity, achieving overpotentials of 67 and 155 mV at j = 10 mA cm−2 in 1.0 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4, respectively. Density functional theory simulations suggest that, compared with free-doping MoS2, the edged Co doping is responsible for the significantly improved HER activity. Our method, in addition to providing reliable Pt-matched HER catalysts, may also inspire the general synthesis of edge-rich metal-doped metal chalcogenide for a wide range of energy conversion applications.

Abstract:The exploration of cost-effective hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts through water splitting is important for developing clean energy technology and devices. The application of CoS 2 in HER has been drawing more and more attention due to its low cost and relatively satisfactory HER catalytic performance. And CoS 2 was found to exhibit excellent HER catalytic performance after appropriate doping according to other experimental investigations. However, the theoretical simulation and the intrinsic catalytic mechanism of CoS 2 remains insufficiently investigated. Therefore, in this study, density functional theory is used to investigate the HER catalytic activity of CoS 2 doped with a heteroatom. The results show that Pt-, N- and O-doped CoS 2 demonstrates smaller Gibbs free energies close to that of Pt, compared with the original CoS 2 and CoS 2 doped with other atoms. Furthermore, HER catalytic performance of CoS 2 can be improved by tuning d-band centers of H adsorption sites. This study provides an effective method to achieve modified CoS 2 for high-performance HER and to investigate other transition metal sulfides as HER electrode.

Band Engineering Induced Conducting 2H‐Phase MoS 2 by PdSRe Sites Modification for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The electronic band structure of MoS2 exerts far‐ranging effects on the applications of these materials, ranging from chemical catalysis, electronic, and magnetic behaviors. However, the underlying relationship between the electronic band structure and activity is largely unknown in heterogeneous catalysis including the hydrogen evolution reaction, partly due to the lack of a controllable methodology to achieve desirable electronic band structures in the 2H‐phase MoS2. Herein it is demonstrated that dual dopants can engineer the band structure of MoS2 by substituting into the adjacent Mo sites. Specifically, these constructed PdRe dimers bridged by sulfur (PdSRe sites) introduce conducting electronic states around the Fermi level to increase the metallic characteristics of MoS2, resulting in metallic‐like behavior, which is initially semiconducting. Furthermore, the efficacy of inducing a phase conversion from 2H to metallic 1T is higher for codoping with dual dopants as compared to that for the use of a single dopant, thereby generating more intrinsically active PdS*Mo sites to further increase active sites density. Ultimately, this leads to the MoS2 catalyst showing a low overpotential of 46 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a high exchange current density of 1.524 mA cm−2, along with superior operating durability. A neighboring dual‐heteroatom doping strategy is proposed to effectively tune electronic band structures. Specifically, these constructed PdRe dimers bridged by sulfur introduce conducting electronic states around the Fermi level to increase the metallic characteristics of MoS2, resulting in a metallic‐like behaviour, which is initially semiconducting. The Pd,Re‐MoS2 yields the highest hydrogen evolution reaction performance achieved thus far using phase‐pure MoS2‐based materials.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst, while several challenges still remain to obtain high efficient activity, due to low conductivity, weak active sites and poor stability of pristine MoS2. Here, we demonstrate modulation of electron structures in 3D hollow MoS2 for increasing intrinsic conductivity and activating basal planes through heteroatom doping to achieve superior HER performances. The oxygen doped hollow MoS2 nanoarchitectures (H-O-MoS2) assembled from nanosheets are constructed by oil-water two-phase method and anion exchange reaction. The H-O-MoS2 presents overpotential of 207 mV at current density of 10 mA cm-2 and Tafel slope of 65 mV dec-1, which are much lower than hollow MoS2 (H-MoS2) and oxygen doped solid MoS2 (S-O-MoS2). Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, electron structures of MoS2 including electron density, band structure and density of state are modulated through oxygen doping, leading to highly activated basal surfaces and enhanced conductivity. Compared with H-MoS2, hydrogen adsorption of Gibbs free energy of H-O-MoS2 is reduced to 1.11 from 2.15 eV, enhancing hydrogen adsorption-desorption rate. The concept of our work combines advantages of hollow structures and electron structure modulation by oxygen doping to greatly enhance HER of MoS2, which could be extended to other 3D metal dichalcogenides catalysts for water-splitting.
