Abstract:MoS2, Co-MoS2 and rGO-Co-MoS2 were synthesized successfully by a simple hydrothermal method. microstructures and Raman spectra of the samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and Raman spectroscopy. The result indicate that the peaks at 14.4 degrees, 33.0 degrees and 58.4 degrees may be assigned to (002), (100) and (110) plane of pure MoS2, respectively. The crystallinity of MoS2 may be restrained by cobalt doping. D band and G band of amorphous carbon can be seen in the rGO-Co-MoS2. XPS result indicated that the rGO-10-Co-MoS2 is mainly consisted of S, Mo, Co, C and 0, respectively. The electrochemical performance test results show that rGO-10-Co-MoS2 presents the lowest overpotentials of 205 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and the smallest Tafel slope, indicating cobalt doping and rGO hybrid can improve electrocatalytic activity for HER. In addition, The sample also exhibit good electrocatalytic stability in the acid condition.
Design of Dual-Modified MoS2 with Nanoporous Ni and Graphene as Efficient Catalysts for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a two-dimensional layered material, has attracted ever-growing interest as one of the most promising non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, its catalytic efficiency is far from that of the best-performing Pt-based catalysts due to insufficient active sites and poor conductivity. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) simulations indicate that the catalytic activity of MoS2 could be improved through synergistic effects between the graphene substrate and Ni atom adsorption. Following this result, we designed and synthesized dual-modified MoS2 nanosheets with nanoporous Ni and reduced graphite oxide, which show a low onset potential (85 mV), a small Tafel slope (71.3 mV dec–1), and a high cycling stability as HER catalysts. A ternary hybrid of Zn-doped MoS2-RGO for highly effective electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Modification of MoS2-based catalysts is effective in solving the overdependence of hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) on noble metal catalysts. In this work, a Zn-doped molybdenum disulfide-reduced graphene oxide (Zn-MoS2-RGO) hybrid was synthesized in one step employing a hydrothermal method. By substituting the position of Mo, uniform doping with Zn improved the catalytic activity of MoS2 for HER. The interlayer spacing of MoS2 increased from 0.65 to 0.75 nm, demonstrating RGO effectively interpolate into MoS2 nanosheets. This prevented aggregation and exposed more edge active sites of MoS2. According to density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the layered structure of the MoS2 nanosheets doped with Zn and intercalated with RGO promoted charge transfer and resulted in outstanding hydrogen evolution activity. Compared with MoS2 (6.86 eV), the Zn-MoS2-RGO hybrid (5.47 eV) with a considerably lower energy level value exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance. Under optimal conditions, at a potential of -0.3 V vs. RHE, the current density reached -169 mA cm-2 in a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution, 4.78 μmol of H2 was produced in 6 h, and the Faraday efficiency reached 92%. The results obtained herein indicated that Zn-MoS2-RGO was a promising candidate for application in electrocatalytic HER.
Insight into the Excellent Catalytic Activity of (como)s2/graphene for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting has become a potential pathway for sustainable hydrogen production, where high-efficiency low-cost catalysts are highly desirable. MoS2 is a promising candidate to substitute effective but expensive Pt-based catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction. In this work, the computer simulation results reveal that alloying with Co and compositing with graphene could significantly improve the electrocatalytic performance of MoS2 thanks to the activation of MoS2 inert surfaces and enhanced electron transport. Based on this finding, we designed and synthesized a catalyst of (CoMo)S-2/graphene, which exhibits excellent performance with low onset potential (28 mV), overpotential (100 mV) for driving a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), and Tafel slope (60.8 mV dec(-1)), superior to most of MoS2-based electrocatalysts reported in open literatures. This study supplies important information for fundamental understanding of high-efficiency non-noble electrocatalysts toward applications in energy-conversion devices.

Abstract:The synergistic effect of graphene and doping elements is vital to improve the electrocatalytic performance. However, it is still a challenge to select appropriate elements for doping to improve the rate of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, we prepared a highly efficient and promising electrocatalyst, namely CoMoO4/Co2Mo3O8@C, by a carburization process of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) combined with doping molybdenum via simple hydrothermal and pyrolysis method. Compared with Co-MOF, CoMoO4/Co2Mo3O8@C exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential as low as 120 mV at 10 mA·cm−2 and a Tafel slope as small as 69 mV·dec−1 for HER activity in 0.5 M H2SO4. The excellent performance of CoMoO4/Co2Mo3O8@C could be ascribed to the synergistic effect of CoMoO4/Co2Mo3O8 and graphene coating, which facilitated charge transfer in HER activity. This work may provide novel perspectives for fabricating electrocatalysts composed of transition metal oxide and graphene based on MOFs for enhancing HER performance.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) based on water splitting holds great promise for clean energy technologies, in which the key issue is exploring cost-effective materials to replace noble metal catalysts. Here, a sequential chemical etching and pyrolysis strategy are developed to prepare molybdenum carbide-decorated metallic cobalt@nitrogen-doped porous carbon polyhedrons (denoted as Mo/Co@N-C) hybrids for enhanced electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The obtained metallic Co nanoparticles are coated by N-doped carbon thin layers while the formed molybdenum carbide nanoparticles are well-dispersed in the whole Co@N-C frames. Benefiting from the additionally implanted molybdenum carbide active sites, the HER performance of Mo/Co@N-C hybrids is significantly promoted compared with the single Co@N-C that is derived from the pristine ZIF-67 both in alkaline and acidic media. As a result, the as-synthesized Mo/Co@N-C hybrids exhibit superior HER electrocatalytic activity, and only very low overpotentials of 157 and 187 mV are needed at 10 mA cm(-2) in 1 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4, respectively, opening a door for rational design and fabrication of novel low-cost electrocatalysts with hierarchical structures toward electrochemical energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Herein, we report a unique thermal synthesis method to prepare a novel two-dimensional (2D) hybrid nanostructure consisting of ultrathin and tiny-sized molybdenum disulfide nano platelets homogeneously inlaid in graphene sheets (MoS2/G) with excellent electrocatalytic performance for HER. In this process, molybdenum oleate served as the source of both molybdenum and carbon, while crystalline sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) served as both reaction template and sulfur source. The remarkable integration of MoS2 and graphene in a well-assembled 2D hybrid architecture provided large electrochemically active surface area and a huge number of active sites and also exhibited extraordinary collective properties for electron transport and H+ trapping. The MoS2/G inlaid nanosheets deliver ultrahigh catalytic activity toward HER among the existing electrocatalysts with similar compositions, presenting a low onset overpotential approaching 30 mV, a current density of 10 mA/cm(2) at similar to 110 mV, and a Tafel slope as small as 67.4 mV/dec. Moreover, the strong bonding between MoS2 nanoplatelets and graphene enabled outstanding long-term electrochemical stability and structural integrity, exhibiting almost 100% activity retention after 1000 cycles and similar to 97% after 100 000 s of continuous testing (under static overpotential of -0.15 V). The synthetic strategy is simple, inexpensive, and scalable for large-scale production and also can be extended to diverse inlaid 2D nanoarchitectures with great potential for many other applications.
Synthesis of Ni-doped MoS2/graphene hybrids and their electro-catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:In order to develop cost-effective electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), Ni-doped MoS2/graphene (Nix-MoS2/G, x=0.03, 0.05, 0.10) hybrids were fabricated by one-pot hydrothermal method. The hybrids were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of Ni-doping on the microstructure and the electrocatalytic HER activity of the hybrids were investigated. Results showed that the Ni-doped MoS2/G catalysts exhibited better electrocatalytic HER activity than MoS2/G catalyst. Among these hybrids, the Ni0.05-MoS2/G hybrid (the mole ratio of Ni∶Mo for 1∶20 in the hydrothermal reaction system) exhibited the highest electrocatalytic HER activity with a Tafel slope of 50.8 mV/dec. The improvement of electrocatalytic activity can be contributed to that the rotational Ni-doping changes the morphology of the hybrid in which MoS2 nanosheets can be well dispersed on the surface of graphene and more active sites for HER are displayed. In addition, Ni-doping enhances the intrinsic catalytic activity of MoS2 edge sites for HER.

Abstract:Earth-abundant MoS2 has attracted great attentions as a promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst, but it is limited by sluggish water dissociation and strong adsorption of the oxygen-containing intermediates in alkaline media. Herein, an interfacial engineering strategy to fabricate Co-doped 1T-MoS2 coupling with V2C MXene was reported to improve the HER kinetics of MoS2. DFT calculations predict that the construction of heterogeneous interfaces between V2C MXene and Co-doped 1T-MoS2 can effectively reduce the energy barrier of water dissociation and optimize the free energy of hydrogen adsorption. As a result, the synthesized Co-MoS2/V2C@CC nanohybrid exhibits excellent HER performance with small overpotentials of 70.1, 263.2 and 296 mV to achieve current densities of 10, 500 and 1000 mA cm−2, respectively, and outstanding stability for 50 h HER test without degradation. Additionally, the overall hydrazine-assisted water splitting (OHzS) system catalyzed by Co-MoS2/V2C@CC in both anode and cathode requires only 0.33 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with significant long-term durability.

Abstract:Molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) is recognized as an alternative electrocatalyst to noble metal for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a facile, low cost, and scalable method is provided for the fabrication of Mo2C-based eletrocatalyst (Mo2C/G-NCS) by a spray-drying, and followed by annealing. As-prepared Mo2C/G-NCS electrocatalyst displays that ultrafine Mo2C nanopartilces are uniformly embedded into graphene wrapping N-doped porous carbon microspheres derived from chitosan. Such designed structure offer several favorable features for hydrogen evolution application: 1) the ultrasmall size of Mo2C affords a large exposed active sites; 2) graphene-wrapping ensures great electrical conductivity; 3) porous structure increases the electrolyte-electrode contact points and lowers the charge transfer resistance; 4) N-dopant interacts with H+ better than C atoms and favorably modifies the electronic structures of adjacent Mo and C atoms. As a result, the Mo2C/G-NCS demonstrates superior HER activity with a very low overpotential of 70 or 66 mV to achieve current density of 10 mA cm(-2), small Tafel slope of 39 or 37 mV dec(-1), respectively, in acidic and alkaline media, and high stability, indicating that it is a great potential candidate as HER electrocatalyst.

Abstract:Direct decoration of transition metallic dichalcogenides such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) on pristine graphene is extremely difficult owing to its surface inertness. Under assistance of supercritical carbon dioxide, we develop a unique synthesis of a high-quality hybrid nanostructure with ultrafine MoS2 nanosheets supported on pristine graphene that exhibits excellent properties as an advanced catalyst for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). These include a Tafel slope of ~42 mV·decade−1, onset potential as low as ~58 mV and small potential of 81 mV for 10 mA·cm−2 current density, much superior than those obtained from other carbon-based counterparts such as carbon black, carbon nanotubes, and reduced graphene oxide. Both these potentials are the best available values ever achieved so far among all graphene or carbon nanotube-supported molybdenum sulfide. The exceptional HER activity is found to be closely associated with high density of exposed edge sites of ultrafine MoS2 nanosheets being firmly and uniformly anchored on inherently conductive graphene sheets as a result of high wettability between the supercritical fluid and inert carbon surfaces. The facile yet effective supercritical method can also be applicable to a wide range of electrochemically active nanospecies in the development of highly efficient graphene-based nano-catalysts for broad energy applications.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets are promising candidates as electrode materials for the efficient hydrogen production through water splitting. However, their activities are only governed by the edge sites, and their charge transfer efficiencies are still unsatisfactory. Defect generation and hybridization are two very effective ways to tune the nanostructures of MoS2 and enhance their electrocatalytic properties. Herein, cobalt-doped molybdenum disulfide (Co-MoS2) nanosheets have been synthesized on graphene network (Co-MoS2/G) by an ultrafast, facile, and reliable microwave irradiation technique. The structural, morphological, and compositional properties were characterized for these Co-MoS2/G composites. The compositionally optimized catalyst of as-produced Co-MoS2/G delivers excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in acidic medium with the best combination of three major parameters, resulting in a low overpotential of 78.1 mV, a small Tafel slope of 40.0 mV per decade, and a high exchange current density of 0.0917 mA cm−2, which also exhibits excellent electrochemical stability for 5000 cycles with negligible loss of the cathodic current and long-term durability for 94 h. Co-doping greatly enhanced the intrinsic activity of MoS2 nanosheet catalyst by creating abundant defects, and in addition, the integration of graphene notably promoted the electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of Co-MoS2/G composites. This study would supply an ultrafast, simple, and efficient strategy for developing excellent metal-doped electrocatalysts for HER.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Molybdenum Sulfide (MoS2) represents an excellent performance non precious electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). There are some challenges to further improve the HER property of MoS2 owing to its inferior conductivity, serious aggregation and limited active sites. In this study, Ni0.15Co0.85S2@MoS2 hybrids are successfully synthesized in a simple hydrothermal method, where Ni-Co Metal Organic Frameworks (NiCoMOFs) are served as precursors, which hydrothermally react with ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate (H24Mo7N6O24 center dot 4H(2)O) and thiourea (CH4N2S) to obtain a catalyst for HER. As expected, the optimized Ni0.15Co0.85S2@MoS2 catalyst presents ultrahigh HER property, a low overpotential of 79 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and a Tafel slope of 52 mV dec(-1) can be observed in 1.0 M KOH, accompanied by excellent stability. This result displayed in our study could give a new strategy for designing and synthesizing more economical electrocatalysts based on MOFs as precursors in the future.

Abstract:Hydrogen has been considered a viable substitute for fossil fuels, with the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) being the most sustainable method for producing hydrogen. However, developing non-noble metal electrocatalysts with high HER activity remains a significant challenge. In the present work, electrospinning carbon nanotube was used as a substance to in-situ grow MoS2/CoS2 composite material. The electrospinning carbon nanotube has a high length-diameter ratio, forming a conductive network. The MoS2/CoS2 composite material was neatly ranged on the carbon nanotube surface, resulting in a higher exposed degree of the active sites. Furthermore, there is a heterostructure between MoS2 and CoS2 leading to a visible electron shift. A density functional theory (DFT) study indicated that MoS2/CoS2 has much lower hydrogen adsorption free energy. As a result, the obtained catalyst exhibited excellent HER catalytic properties, with an overpotential of only 124 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope as low as 88.7 mV dec- 1 in 1 M KOH. In addition, it also has an excellent long-term stability.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been considered as a potential alternative to precious metal catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the performance of MoS2 is still limited due to the poor electron conductivity, scarce active sites and low structural stability. A multiscale design of MoS2 in the structure and atomic composition is needed but still a great challenge. Herein, we report a well-organized three-dimensionally (3D) mesoporous hybrid structure of Co-doped MoS2 and graphene for highly efficient electrocatalytic HER. The mesoporous morphology ensures the well-dispersion of MoS2 layers and exposure of abundant edge sites. Doping of Co atoms into the MoS2 lattice improves the intrinsic HER activity of in-plane sulfur sites. The highly conductive and robust graphene network enhances the conduction of electrons and simultaneously improves the stability of the hybrid structure. The catalyst achieves a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 143 mV versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) which is 200 mV lower compared with pure 2D MoS2, and maintains the activity for over 5000 cyclic voltammetry sweeps. This work provides a promising strategy for efficiently enhancing both the activity and stability of MoS2-based catalyst for HER.

Abstract:There are many tremendous challenges to enhance the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of MoS2 . In this study, nanoflower-like Co-MoS2/NiCoS structure supported on reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) was rationally developed via a simple hydrothermal route, where the synergistic regulations of both interface structural and electronic conductivity were successfully presented by using controllable interface engineering and Co metal ions doped into MoS2 nanosheets. Ascribed to the 3D flower-like nano-structure with massive active sites, the interface coupling effect between MoS2 and Ni-Co-S phase, and Co-doped MoS2 can modulate its surface electronic density. The optimal Co-MoS2 /NiCoS/rGO hybrid exhibits excellent HER activity in 1.0 M KOH, with a small overpotential (eta(10), 84 mV) at 10 mA cm(-2) and a low Tafel slope (46 mV dec(-1)), accompanied by good stability. This work provides an effective route to produce other electrocatalysts based on interface structure and electronic conductivity engineering for HER in the future. Abstract:A multicomponent 3D monolithic electrode was designed that consists of Co single atoms anchored/nitrogen, sulfur co-doped carbon nanotubes (CoSAs-NS-CNTs) on carbon cloth (CC) with ultra-thin MoS2 nanosheets externally decorated and ultra-small CoS2 nanodots internally confined (MoS2/CoSAs-NS-CNTs@CoS2/CC) to form a hybrid heterojunction electrode with double interfaces as vectorial electron transport pathways for promoting electrocatalytic performance. The integration of well-distributed MoS2 nanosheets and CoS2 nanodots linked with Co single atoms anchored/N, S co-doped CNTs endows abundant multiple active sites, outstanding conductivity, and the downshifted d-band center with a thermodynamically favorable hydrogen adsorption free energy (Delta G(H*)) for effectively catalyzing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). As a result, the optimal MoS2/CoSAs-NS-CNTs@CoS2/CC electrode exhibits outstanding HER performance with overpotentials of 72 and 56 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and small Tafel slopes of 59.4 and 43.2 mV dec(-1) in acidic and alkaline solutions, respectively, outperforming most of the previously reported molybdenum/cobalt sulfide-based electrocatalysts. Moreover, the electrode also displays good durability and stability reflected from the small decrease on activity after 5000 CV cycles and nearly no decay in current density after electrolysis for 20 h.
