Abstract:High space-bandwidth product (SBP) imaging platform is an indispensable technique in diverse research fields, particularly in medical imaging and diagnosis. Because of the scale-dependent geometric aberrations of optical elements and the limited number of pixels of image sensor, high resolution and large field of view are hard to be realized simultaneously in traditional imaging systems. Compared with off-axis holography, in-line lensless holography could maintain high SBP without an imaging lens. Compressive holography (CH), which combines compressive sensing and in-line lensless holography, is considered as a promising solution for high SBP three-dimensional imaging. We developed a high SBP three-dimensional imaging algorithm using CH based on total-variation sparsity constraint. An efficient block-wise CH algorithm is proposed to reduce the reconstruction time. The block-wise model could locate accurate reconstruction searching spaces, resulting in high convergence speed and high image contrast.

Abstract:The resolution of reconstructed images is significantly limited by the size of captured holograms in digital holography. A multiplane digital holographic algorithm based on extrapolation iterations is proposed herein. Holograms at different axial distances are captured with a shifting imaging sensor and then extrapolated to a larger hologram after padding. Multiple holograms provide multipoint constraints in diffraction calculation. Constraints based on the energy distribution and transmissions of an object are applied to extract the object function from the holograms. The method achieves a higher convergence speed for solving the inverse problem compared with the single-plane extrapolation method. We demonstrate that the reconstruction in multiple planes yields a better resolution than that in one plane.

Abstract:Compressive holography is a relatively time-consuming image estimation in convex optimized problem. We propose an efficient block-wise algorithm to limit the searching space and reduce the calculation time while keeping the reconstruction quality. The effective anti-aliasing boundary of the sub-hologram is located to determine the block size for compressive reconstruction in the total-variation two-step iterative shrinkage/thresholding algorithm. Padded sub-holograms could be reconstructed in parallel by using multi-core processors. Compared with the traditional compressive holography, the block-wise algorithm could take approximately 1/50 of the reconstruction time and achieve an improved reconstruction quality.

Abstract:Lensless digital holographic imaging could support high resolution, large field of view and three-dimensional (3D) imaging, but improving the resolution and quality of the reconstruction is still challenging. In this review paper, the compressive holographic models based on diffraction propagation method arc introduced. Compressive sensing arc developed based on total variation regularization and two-step iterative shrinkage/thresholding algorithm. The physical mechanism of removing two-order noise and twin image is discussed. A filter layer is designed to improve the signal to noise ratio of 3D reconstruction. A block-wise algorithm based on effective anti-aliasing region is proposed, which can improve computational efficiency of compressive holography. A single-shot compressive holographic model based on two-angle illumination beam is proposed. It effectively improves the axial resolution of 3D imaging. High-resolution 3D reconstruction of multilayer masks and particle flow field arc demonstrated by using this algorithm.

Abstract:A recording method to suppress the zero-order diffraction term in an off-axial digital hologram and to improve its effective bandwidth is proposed.The method records the hologram on the condition that the reference intensity is more stronger than that of the object.Then,the recorded hologram is normalized by the recorded reference intensity beforehand.The natural logarithm operation and Hilbert transform are applied to the normal hologram to suppress the zero-order diffraction and the object complex field is recovered by an exponential operation.The theory of the method is analyzed.It shows that the logarithm operation can suppress the zero-order term and the Hilbert transform can filter the desired term.Finally,the experiments are performed to validate the method.The results show that the method can suppress the zero-order diffraction term efficiently even in the case of the strong spectral overlap between the zero-order term and the diffraction orders.The influence of the intensity ratio of the light of reference to that of object on the suppression efficient of zero-order diffraction term is analyzed.It shows that the zero-order term can be efficiently suppressed through the proposed method when the intensity ratio is above 5.

Abstract:Holographic techniques enable precise laser manipulation, but suffer from two considerable limitations: speckle and deterioration of axial distribution. Here, we propose a cylindrical quadratic phase (CQP) method with temporal focusing (TF) to generate speckle-free holographic illumination with high axial resolution. TF-CQP utilizes a superposed cylindrical phase as the initial guess to iteratively optimize phase hologram, realizing speckle-free holographic reconstruction on the target focal plane and eliminating secondary focus on the defocused planes. TF-CQP further disperses defocused beams symmetrically by a blazed grating, placed conjugate to the focal plane, which enhances axial confinement. Simulation and experimental results show that TF-CQP reconstructs speckle-free illumination with arbitrary shapes and <10 µm axial resolution. Compared to TF-GS (Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm), widely used in holographic optogenetics, TF-CQP shows increased uniformity of 200% and improved modulation efficiency of 32.33% for parallel holographic illumination, as well as a 10% increment in axial resolution.

Abstract:To make full use of the spatial bandwidth product of imaging systems, grating based single-shot digital lens-free holography with spatial spectrum multiplexing is proposed. Multiple object waves are generated by a one-dimensional grating which is placed in near contact with the object to avoid the crosstalk among different diffraction orders during reconstruction. A multiplexed off-axis hologram is created by interference between the object waves and reference wave and captured by an image sensor in one shot. Multiple imaging areas corresponding to the captured object waves can be simultaneously retrieved during reconstruction, which is equivalent to increase the imaging area. A formula which guarantees accurate full FOV imaging without crosstalk or information loss is presented. The imaging experiments of a USAF resolution target are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of this method.

Abstract:Modern quantitative optical imaging is developing toward high throughput and powerful data processing capabilities. Holography is a powerful technique to characterize quantitative phase delays introduced by light–matter interactions. The spatial bandwidth utilization of imaging sensors in digital holography can be expanded via an off‐axis multiplexing technique, which is a powerful tool for high‐throughput quantitative optical imaging. However, the highest bandwidth utilization of sensor is limited at 58.9% to keep the signal spectra away from the zeroth spectra. Kramers–Kronig relation is introduced into the off‐axis multiplexing technology to allow for the overlapping between the signal spectra and unwanted spectra. The bandwidth utilization of sensor in a diffraction‐limited optical system can reach 78.5% in one hologram. It opens a new route to multiplexing quantitative optical imaging and helps to improve the performance of iterative‐free and constraint‐free modern optical microscopes in various spectral regimes.

Abstract:Optical imaging has become the dominant method for characterizing information in biological systems. The rapid, non-destructive and comprehensive characterization of biological samples in recent years has placed high demands on the resolvable volume of imaging systems. Digital holography records an entire complex wavefront including both the amplitude and phase of the light field by interference imaging. Due to fast, non-destructive, and 3D imaging abilities, digital holography has been used in numerous applications such as digital pathology, label-free observation and real-time monitoring of in vitro cells. First, this paper introduces the main ways to achieve high-throughput imaging, and analyzes the advantages of digital holography and the evolution of spatial bandwidth. Secondly, a theoretical framework for high-throughput multi-channel multiplexing digital holography based on the Hilbert transform is presented. Then, an extended field of view digital holographic microscope is introduced based on this theoretical framework. Experimental results indicate that the system achieves 8 times the space-bandwidth product higher than that of conventional off-axis holographic microscopes without sacrificing spatial and temporal resolution. This highthroughput digital holographic multiplexing technology can make full use of the redundant spatial bandwidth of single intensity image, which verifies the feasibility of high-throughput multi-channel multiplexing digital holography.

Abstract:Compressed sensing has been discussed separately in spatial and temporal domains. Compressive holography has been introduced as a method that allows 3D tomographic reconstruction at different depths from a single 2D image. Coded exposure is a temporal compressed sensing method for high speed video acquisition. In this work, we combine compressive holography and coded exposure techniques and extend the discussion to 4D reconstruction in space and time from one coded captured image. In our prototype, digital in-line holography was used for imaging macroscopic, fast moving objects. The pixel-wise temporal modulation was implemented by a digital micromirror device. In this paper we demonstrate $10\times$ temporal super resolution with multiple depths recovery from a single image. Two examples are presented for the purpose of recording subtle vibrations and tracking small particles within 5 ms.

Twin-Image-Free Holography: A Compressive Sensing Approach

Abstract:Holographic reconstruction is troubled by the phase-conjugate wave front arising from Hermitian symmetry of the complex field. The so-called twin image obfuscates the reconstruction in solving the inverse problem. Here we quantitatively reveal how and how much the twin image affects the reconstruction and propose a compressive sensing (CS) approach to reconstruct a hologram completely free from the twin image. Using the canonical basis, the incoherence condition of CS is naturally satisfied by the Fourier transformation associated with wave propagation. With the propagation kernel function related to the distance, the object wave diffracts into a sharp pattern while the phase-conjugate wave diffracts into a diffuse pattern. An iterative algorithm using a total variation sparsity constraint could filter out the diffuse conjugated signal and overcome the inherent physical symmetry of holographic reconstruction. The feasibility is verified by simulation and experimental results, as well as a comparative study to an existing phase retrieval method.
Convolutional Symmetric Compressed Look-Up-table Method for 360° Dynamic Color 3D Holographic Display.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a convolutional symmetric compressed look-up-table (CSC-LUT) method to accelerate computer-generated hologram (CGH) computation based on the Fresnel diffraction theory and LUT. The proposed method can achieve one-time high-quality fast generation of color holograms by utilizing dynamic convolution operation, which is divided three processes. Firstly, the pre-calculated data of maximum horizontal modulation factor is compressed in 1D array by coordinate symmetry. Then, the test object is resampled to satisfy convolutional translation invariance. Finally, the dynamic convolution operation is used to simplify CGH computation process rather than the point-by-point computation. Numerical simulation and optical experimental results show that our proposed method can achieve faster computation speed, higher reconstruction quality and wider application compared to conventional SC-LUT method. The further optimization method for parallel acceleration on the GPU framework can achieve real-time (>24fps) color holographic display corresponding to three perspectives of a 3D scene.

Abstract:The zero-order diffraction image and the conjugate image can be eliminated using the phase-shifting digital holography.However,the resolution of the hologram and the reconstructed image is limited by the resolution of the CCD used in the digital holography.To reconstruct a higher resolution image from part information of a hologram,the novel compressive sensing algorithm is applied to the sparse reconstruction of digital holograms.The theory of applying the compressive sensing algorithm to reconstruct digital holograms is analyzed.A digital hologram acquired by simulation in computer is reconstructed using this algorithm.The experimental results show that digital holograms can be reconstructed using the compressive sensing algorithm.A high-quality image is reconstructed from the 50% data of the hologram.The zero-order diffraction image and the conjugate image are eliminated.When random measurement is realized by an appropriate measurement device such as a DMD or a random phase plate,digital holograms can be recorded by a single pixel camera to break the limitation of the CCD resolution.

Abstract:High resolution and wide field of view (FOV) are always the goals of imaging, which are related to the space-bandwidth product (SBP) of the system. Currently, most methods focus on either resolution enhancement or FOV extension. Few works pay attention on both. There lacks a generalized framework for the joint space-frequency SBP expansion. We propose such a holographic imaging method, termed phase-space synthesized digital holography (PSH), which can improve and adjust resolution and FOV simultaneously, based on a phase-space analysis. Through a controllable SBP expansion in the phase space by multiangle divergent spherical wave illumination, a synthesized hologram is obtained to reconstruct a resolution-enhanced and FOV-extended image. Abstract:Compressive holography enables multilayer reconstruction by single in-line hologram without twin image and crosstalk. However, the iterative reconstruction methods cannot meet the needs of rapid imaging. We proposed a model-driven neural network for compressive holographic reconstruction by combining the interpretability of iterative algorithm and fast inference of deep neural network. The experiment demonstrates the compelling reconstruction with fast computational speed.
Generalized Single-Sideband Computer-Generated Holography For High-Quality Three-Dimensional Display

Abstract:Computer-generated holograms (CGHs) can be used to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) images without optical recording of the interference pattern. The conjugate image and zero-order beam have considerable influences on the optical reconstructions in computer-generated holographic display systems based on the amplitude spatial light modulators. Generalized single-sideband method is introduced for suppressing the unwanted terms in computer-generated holography. Computer-generated holograms are calculated based on frequency filtering of the object wave, which redistributes the diffraction wave in spatial frequency domain for spectrum filtering during optical reconstruction. When the object wave on the hologram plane of the 3D scene is calculated, the single-sideband filter is addressed numerically after Fourier transform of the object wave. The filtered object wave can be calculated by inverse Fourier transform of the spectrum, and then it can be coded into the amplitude CGH. Different with the overlapped spatial frequency of the unfiltered CGH, the spectrum distributions of the object wave and the conjugate wave are located in the different sides of the spatial frequency domain with help of the single-sideband filter. By placing a single-sideband filter in Fourier plane, the conjugate image and the zero-order beam can be blocked during optical reconstruction. Since the proposed method directly processes the complex amplitude distribution of the object wave, it could be applied to various 3D CGH algorithms. Numerical simulations and optical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is generally effective for different kinds of CGH algorithms to reconstruct quality three-dimensional scenes that are free of conjugate image and zero-order beam.
