Abstract:ALD Alumina was utilized as a protective layer to inhibit the sintering of supported nano-sized ALD Pd catalysts in the methanol decomposition reaction carried out at elevated temperatures. The protective ALD alumina layers were synthesized on Pd nanoparticles (1–2 nm) supported on high surface area alumina substrates. Up to a certain over-coat thickness, the alumina protective layers preserved or even slightly enhanced the catalytic activity and prevented sintering of the Pd nanoparticles up to 500 °C.

Abstract:Sintering is a long-standing issue especially in high temperature catalytic applications. In this paper, we report an effective method to slow down metal particle migration and coalescence (PMC) by using a thermally stable alumina support. Noteworthily, the alumina sample was developed from ALP fumigation residue, which is a very dangerous substance for living creatures and environment protection. By optimizing the heated hydrolysis and ball-milling conditions, we recycled a phosphate-stabilized alumina material that retained a 117 m(2) g(-1) surface area after 1050 degrees C hydrothermal aging. The catalyst using this newly developed alumina support had Pd dispersion 1.7 times higher than that using a commercial alumina support after aging. The kinetics and XPS experiments showed that phosphate neither participated in the catalytic reaction process nor changed the active sites. This catalyst also exhibited extraordinary water tolerance and durability, making it a promising material in automotive exhaust purification and other catalytic applications.
Coking- and Sintering-Resistant Palladium Catalysts Achieved Through Atomic Layer Deposition

Abstract:We showed that alumina (Al(2)O(3)) overcoating of supported metal nanoparticles (NPs) effectively reduced deactivation by coking and sintering in high-temperature applications of heterogeneous catalysts. We overcoated palladium NPs with 45 layers of alumina through an atomic layer deposition (ALD) process that alternated exposures of the catalysts to trimethylaluminum and water at 200°C. When these catalysts were used for 1 hour in oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane to ethylene at 650°C, they were found by thermogravimetric analysis to contain less than 6% of the coke formed on the uncoated catalysts. Scanning transmission electron microscopy showed no visible morphology changes after reaction at 675°C for 28 hours. The yield of ethylene was improved on all ALD Al(2)O(3) overcoated Pd catalysts.

Abstract:The sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) require considerable Pd in the cathode, hindering the widespread of alkaline fuel cells (AFCs). By alloying Pd with transition metals, the oxygen reduction reaction's catalytic properties can be substantially enhanced. Nevertheless, the utilization of Pd-transition metal alloys in fuel cells is significantly constrained by their inadequate long-term durability due to the propensity of transition metals to leach. In this study, a nonmetallic doping strategy was devised and implemented to produce a Pd catalyst doped with P that exhibited exceptional durability towards ORRs. Pd3P0.95 with an average size of 6.41 nm was synthesized by the heat-treatment phosphorization of Pd nanoparticles followed by acid etching. After P-doping, the size of the Pd nanoparticles increased from 5.37 nm to 6.41 nm, and the initial mass activity (MA) of Pd3P0.95/NC reached 0.175 A mgPd−1 at 0.9 V, slightly lower than that of Pd/C. However, after 40,000 cycles of accelerated durability testing, instead of decreasing, the MA of Pd3P0.95/NC increased by 6.3% while the MA loss of Pd/C was 38.3%. The durability was primarily ascribed to the electronic structure effect and the aggregation resistance of the Pd nanoparticles. This research also establishes a foundation for the development of Pd-based ORR catalysts and offers a direction for the future advancement of catalysts designed for practical applications in AFCs.

Abstract:The effect a 45 atom-thick overlayer of aluminum oxide, deposited by atomic layer deposition, was investigated on a 2.5wt.% Pd/Al2O3 catalyst in which the Pd nanoparticles were encapsulated by the support consequent to the preparation method. The overlayer suppressed the activity for oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane, but it also effectively prevented metal sintering and suppressed coking for reactions at high temperatures. On the catalyst with the alumina overlayer, a steady activity was observed even at 600°C and above when the gaseous oxygen was completely consumed, while attaining 70% selectivity for ethene at 38% conversion, versus 10% selectivity at comparable conversions without the overlayer. The overlayer preferentially deposited on edge Pd atoms, as indicated by preferentially suppression of the CO chemisorption peak at 2056cm−1, which are responsible for coking. The high ethene selectivity at 675°C could be due to coupled homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions at the high temperature, together with phase change of PdO to Pd.
Effects of Phosphorus Addition on the Hydrophobicity and Catalytic Performance in Methane Combustion of -Al2O3 Supported Pd Catalysts

Abstract:A series of xP theta-Al2O3 supports modified with different amounts of phosphorus element were prepared and taken as supports of palladium catalysts for methane catalytic combustion. The impacts of phosphorus additives on the hydrophobicity of Pd/xP theta-Al2O3 and its performance of methane catalytic combustion in the absence of and presence of 8% water were systematically studied. It was found that the hydrophobicity of xP theta-Al2O3 changed with the increase of phosphorus content, which had a significant effect on the activity of methane catalytic combustion. The incorporation of phosphorus replaced the hydroxyl groups on the surface of Al2O3 in the form of phosphates, thus changing the density of hydroxyl groups of Al2O3 support. TGA, NH3-TPD, IR, and XPS were employed to illustrate the process of phosphate replacement. xP theta-Al2O3 with less than 1 wt.% phosphorus content had better hydrophobicity than the unmodified theta-Al2O3 and Pd/xP theta-Al2O3, therefore had better performance for methane catalytic combustion, which was attributed to the substitution of hydroxyl groups on the surface of theta-Al2O3 by PO43- and HPO42-. However, when the phosphorus content of Al2O3 was higher than 1 wt.%, the substitution of H2PO4- began to dominate, which would lead to poorer hydrophobicity and catalytic performance. This work will guide the design of methane catalytic combustion catalysts resistant to water inhibition problem.
Anchoring PdOx clusters on defective alumina for improved catalytic methane oxidation

Abstract:Evolution of the Pd active centers in size and spatial distribution leads to an irreversible deactivation in many high-temperature catalytic processes. This research demonstrates the use of a defective alumina (Al2O3-x) as catalyst support to anchor Pd atoms and suppress the growth of Pd clusters in catalytic methane oxidation. A combination of operando spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide insights into the evolution of Pd species and reveals distinct catalytic methane oxidation mechanisms on Pd single atoms, clusters, and nanoparticles (NPs). Among these Pd species, the cluster active centers are found to be the most favorable participants in methane oxidation due to their high dispersion, high content of Pd2+ oxidation state, and resistance to deactivation by carbonates, bicarbonates, and water. The Pd/Al2O3-x catalyst shows increased stability with respect to a Pd/Al2O3 counterpart during simulated aging in alternating reducing and oxidizing conditions due to stronger interactions with the support. This study demonstrates that defect engineering of non-reducible supports can constrain the evolution of active centers, which holds promising potential for widespread utilization across diverse industrial catalytic processes, including various hydrogenation and oxidation reactions.

Abstract:Abstractγ-Al2O3 is widely present as a support in catalytic application. However, the transformation of γ-Al2O3 into the undesired hydrated boehmite (γ-AlOOH) under the aqueous reaction conditions usually results in an irreversible inactivation of supported Al2O3 catalysts. Toward suppressing the hydration of γ-Al2O3 in the process of catalytic reactions, herein we have devised a new strategy by exploring the SiH4 treatment for successful preparation of Si–Pd/Al2O3 catalysts. SiH4 treatment enables a significant improvement in the poor stability of Pd/Al2O3 for selective oxidation of toluene because SiH4 could effectively anchor palladium nanoparticles and inhibit the formation of boehmite by reacting with unsaturated aluminum sites to reduce the intensity of Lewis acid sites on the surface of γ-Al2O3. Pd/Al2O3 pretreated with SiH4, that is Si–Pd/Al2O3, provides high catalytic activity and stability in the aqueous oxidation of toluene even at high temperature. Moreover, Si–Pd/Al2O3 is reusable without obvious loss of the catalytic activity and selectivity, compared to Pd/Al2O3.

Abstract:A series of Pd/xP-CZA catalysts were prepared to investigate the impacts of phosphorus on the structures and catalytic activity. It was found that increasing the amount of phosphorus incorporation leads to the transformation of CexZr1-xO2 phase into ZrO2 and CePO4 at high temperature by the reaction of P species with CexZr1-xO2 composites, which induces the declined reducibility. The addition of phosphorus effectively adjusts the surface Pd2+/(Pd2++Pd0) ratios and generates larger Pd particle sizes, synergistically promoting catalytic oxidation of methane.

Abstract:Pd/Al2O3 catalysts supported on Al2O3 of different particle sizes were synthesized and applied in methane combustion. These catalysts were systematically characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution-transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), high-angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), H2-temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), O2-temperature-programmed oxidation (O2-TPO), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). The characterization results indicated that nano-sized Al2O3 enabled the uniform dispersion of palladium nanoparticles, thus contributing to the excellent catalytic performance of these nano-sized Pd/Al2O3 catalysts. Among them, Pd/Al2O3-nano-10 (Pd/Al2O3 supported by alumina with an average particle size of 10 nm) showed superior catalytic activity and stability for methane oxidation under harsh practical conditions. It maintained excellent catalytic performance for methane oxidation for 50 hr and remained stable even after harsh hydrothermal aging in 10 vol.% steam at 800°C for 16 hr. Characterization results revealed that the strong metal-support interactions and physical barriers provided by Al2O3-nano-10 suppressed the coalescence ripening of palladium species, and thus contributed to the superior sintering resistance of the Pd/Al2O3-nano-10 catalyst.

Abstract:This work reports a novel strategy to improve phosphorus resistance of a model Pd catalyst on alumina using CePO4 as an additive, and the mechanism of phosphorus poisoning over the catalyst for methane removal under operational conditions was systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that phosphorus poisoning at 800 degrees C caused both harsh physical and chemical modifications in the Pd catalyst without the CePO4 additive; that is, the conversion of support aluminum oxide into a multilayer cristobalite-type aluminum phosphate led to considerable change of the catalyst texture and structure and remarkable blocking of Pd-active sites. However, CePO4 acting as a barrier layer can effectively suppress the formation of the inactive aluminum phosphate and also hinder the accumulation of Pd nanoparticles. Owing to the nearly maintaining of Pd-active sites, the modified catalyst shows much better performance (i.e., a wider A window and a lower light-off temperature) with respect to resistance to phosphorus poisoning and thereby retains its activity of methane conversion.

Highly Active and Stable Palladium Catalysts on Novel Ceria–Alumina Supports for Efficient Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide and Hydrocarbons

Abstract:Precious metal catalysts with superior low-temperature activity and excellent thermal stability are highly needed in environmental catalysis field. In this work, a novel two-step incipient wetness impregnation (T-IWI) method was developed for the fabrication of a unique and highly stable CeO2/Al2O3 support (CA-T). Pd anchored on CA-T exhibited a much higher low-temperature catalytic activity and superior thermal stability in carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) oxidations, compared to Pd anchored on conventional CeO2/Al2O3 (CA), which was prepared by a one-step IWI method. After aging treatment at 800 °C, the CO oxidation rate on Pd/CA-T (1.69 mmol/(gPd s)) at 120 °C was 4.1 and 84.5 times of those on Pd/CA (0.41 mmol/(gPd s)) and Pd/Al2O3 (0.02 mmol/(gPd s)), respectively. It was revealed that the CA-T support with well-controlled small CeO2 particles (ca. 12 nm) possessed abundant defects for Pd anchoring, which created rich Pd-CeO2 interfaces with strengthened interaction between Pd and CeO2 where oxygen could be efficiently activated. This resulted in the significantly improved oxidation activity and thermal stability of Pd/CA-T catalysts. Abstract:Here we demonstrate that phosphorus (P) can affect both reforming and coking of alumina-supported nickel (10 wt% Ni with respect to alumina) at 750 °C and 1 atm. The P-containing catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness co-impregnation. Compared with the P-free nickel catalyst, the reforming activity is enhanced but the coke content decreases 8-fold at Ni:P atomic ratio of 4; the latter further reduces 55-fold at a ratio of 2, without a substantial decline in the reforming activity. Phosphorus not only improves nickel dispersion but also reduces the surface acidity and facilitates CO2 activation. At high P loadings, a portion of nickel transforms into nickel oxide during reforming. Besides tuning the reforming and coking activity, phosphorus changes the behavior of carbon crystallization. In methane pyrolysis and dry reforming, filamentous carbon occurs on the P-free catalyst but it is absent on the P-containing catalyst.

Abstract:Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) have less CO2 emission and have been attracting more attention. However, catalyst is needed to remove pollutants such as CO, NOx and unburned methane in NGVs' exhausts. The development of catalysts with high resistance to chemical poisoning, especially to phosphorus poisoning induced by lubricating oil of NGVs' engine, is a challenge. Herein, we developed a new strategy to improve the phosphorus resistance of model palladium catalyst using phosphate-modified alumina as support for NGVs. The catalysts were analyzed by N-2-physisorption, X-ray fluorescence spectrum (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), COchemisorption, in-situ DRIFTS and X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS). The results show that phosphate alumina support helps the model catalyst maintain its textual properties, otherwise phosphorus species from lubricating oil would deposit on the surface of catalyst and block the catalytically active sites. Moreover, the relative content of active Pd-0 on phosphate-modified alumina support will not decrease. Therefore, compared with conventional Pd catalyst on alumina, the model Pd catalyst on phosphate-modified alumina can show significantly enhanced phosphorus resistance under operating conditions for NGVs, and can nearly maintain its catalytic performance of removing pollutants upon phosphorus poisoning. For deposition on oxidized, PdO/Al2O3 catalysts, TEM imaging, EDS mapping, and metal-dispersion measurements confirmed the presence of the thin ZrO2 over both the Al2O3 support and the metal particles. The ZrO2 films were surprisingly stable, forming a well-crystallized phase only above 1173 K. The ZrO2 coating over the PdO particles created a semicore–shell-like structure that stabilized the metal against sintering in air at 1073 K. Steady-state, methane oxidation rates on unmodified PdO/Al2O3 decreased with increasing catalyst calcination temperature, but rates on the ZrO2-covered surfaces increased with increasing calcination temperature.
Durable PdNi/Al2O3 Catalysts with PdO-NiO and PdO-NiAl2O4 Dual Interfaces for Methane Combustion

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation is a valuable residual methane removal method, and Pd-based catalysts are the most robust and widely applied system. Yet, they suffer from poor stability in practical applications due to sintering and water poisoning. In this work, we prepared a high-performance PdNi/Al2O3 catalyst with PdO-NiO and PdO-NiAl2O4 dual interfaces. PdNi/Al2O3 showed excellent hydrothermal stability after aging at 750 degrees C, 10% H2O for 72 h, with the T50 remaining below 315 degrees C. In addition, compared to bare Pd/Al2O3, PdNi/Al2O3 exhibited a better low-temperature activity with a T50 of 287 degrees C, rivaling state-of-the-art Pd-based catalysts. Combining structural characterizations and DFT calculations, it was shown that dual interfaces promoted the activation of methane C-H bonds and suppressed the adsorption of surface water/hydroxyl groups and agglomeration of PdO particles. This study has provided new perceptions for exploring the influence of interfacial interactions and offered a route to synthesize high-stability palladium catalysts.

Abstract:It is an urgent desire to decrease release of methane, a potential greenhouse gas, over methane-oxidation catalysts. However, the commonly used Pd-based catalysts normally suffer from poor hydrothermal stability. Here, we report a Pd-Pt bimetallic nano-catalyst stabilized by magnesia-alumina spinel via a facile doping strategy for lean methane combustion. The promoted effects of platinum on the hydrothermal stability of the catalyst are confirmed by XRD, HRTEM, STEM, XPS, CO-DRIFTS characterizations. Pd-Pt bimetallic catalyst can almost maintain its intrinsic catalytic activity (2.7 × 10−5 molCH4 gnoble metal-1s-1 at 260 °C) after harshly hydrothermal aging, while the aged analogous sample without Pt promotion presents remarkably reduced catalytic performance with an increment in CH4 light-off temperature of ca. 50 °C. Kinetic analysis further reveals a much higher turnover frequency (0.011 s-1 at 260 °C) and lower apparent activation energy (119 kJ/mol) of CH4 oxidation on the aged Pd-Pt bimetallic samples. Pt stabilized by magnesia-alumina spinel has a strong interaction with PdO. This interaction could stabilize Pd species in active PdO and also suppress the decomposition of active PdO to less reactive Pd°. Consequently, the sintering resistance of Pt and PdO crystallite and the electron interaction between them could be responsible for the enhanced hydrothermal stability.

Boosting the anti-poisoning ability of palladium towards electrocatalytic formic acid oxidation via polyphosphide chemistry

Abstract:In this work, we reported a novel polyphosphide strategy for the synthesis of phosphorus doped Pd (P-Pd) using red phosphorus as the starting material at quasi-ambient conditions. Polyphophide anions, as the key reaction intermediates, served as the reducing agent and phosphorus source to modulate the surface electronic structure of Pd. The P-Pd obtained exhibited topmost CO tolerance and electrocatalytic activity to formic acid oxidation among the state-of-arts reports. The mass activity and turnover frequency of P-Pd reached 4413 mA mg-1Pd and 16.04 s-1 at 0.8 V, which were 23.7 and 6.4 times that of commercial Pd/C respectively. After 1000 repeated cycles, 82% initial activity was reserved. Combined with the electrochemical analysis and the density functional theory calculation, the boosted electrochemical performances can be attributed to the size and electronic effects induced by the P doping, which increase the surface actives sites, inhibit the adsorption of CO and change the reaction pathway to favorable CO2 route. A full cell was also assembled to demonstrate the practical potential of the P-Pd, which showed a maximum power density of 21.56 mW cm-2. This polyphophide-based reaction route provides a new strategy for the preparation of efficient and durable phosphorus doped alloys for electrocatalysis.
