Abstract:The selectivity limitations of tert-butylation of naphthalene for obtaining 2,6-di-tert-butylnaphathalene (DTBN) was overcame (2,6-/2,7-DTBN>30) over fine-tuned mordenite. With citric acid (CA) and zirconium modification, the synergistic effect of the alkylation catalyst was promoted and the ratio of 2.6-/2,7-DTBN increased after controlling the reaction conditions. Only requires 5.0 equivalents of solvent, 3.0 equivalents of tert-butanol and 20 wt% of catalyst dosage, the ratio of 2,6-DTBN/2,7-DTBN can reach to 49, overcoming the selectivity barriers in naphthalene alkylation reaction. Present study reveals that high 2,6-selectivity can be realized with the optimized acidity, enhanced synergistic effect and fine-tuned zeolite structures.

Abstract:A fine-tuned mordenite was prepared to overcome the low selectivity of tert-amyl anthracene production in the direct alkylation of anthracene. Herein, a series of boric acid-modified Fe-Zr mordenite materials were prepared, and tert-amyl anthracene was smoothly and efficiently obtained over these catalysts. The boron sites in modified catalyst promoted the alcohol dehydrogenation, which benefited the reaction conversion. Moreover, the existence of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites was the key in alkylation reaction, making 1.0B-Fe-Zr/MOR good reactivity (Conv. 47.8%, Sel. 91.4%). Calculated results correlated the products properties with catalyst structures, verifying that boric acid-modified Fe-Zr/MOR was a successful shape-selective catalyst. The present work opens a new frontier for a sustainable and high-selective method to process anthracene alkylation.
Preparation of 2-t-Butyl-p-cresol Catalyzed by Hβ Zeolite

Abstract:Hβ zeolites with n(SiO_2)/n(Al_2O_3)=20,25 and 38 were synthesized and their properties were characterized by XRD and NH_3-TPD.Preparation of 2-t-butyl-p-cresol through the t-butylation of p-cresol with methyl t-butyl ether(MTBE) catalyzed by Hβ zeolite was investigated.Effects of temperature,weight hourly space velocity(WHSV),feed ratio(n(MTBE)/n(p-cresol)) and the n(SiO_2)/n(Al_2O_3) ratio of Hβ zeolite on p-cresol conversion and product selectivity were studied.Thus,with Hβ(n(SiO_2)/n(Al_2O_3)=20) as catalyst,the optimum reaction conditions were n(MTBE)/n(p-cresol)=1.5,WHSV=1.02 mL/h and temperature=120 ℃.Conversion of p-cresol was 68% and yield of 2-t-butyl-p-cresol was 64%.

Abstract:Synthesis of 3-tert-butyl-p-hydroxyanisole by tert-butylation of p-methoxyphenol with MTBE over different zeolites such as H-ZSM-5,H-MCM-41 and dealuminated Y zeolite(abbreviated as H-DAY) was investigated.The results indicate that the acidity amounts,strength and pore structure of the zeolites are the key factors influencing the catalytic behavior.H-DAY is the most active because of its high acidity and suitable pore dimension for the accommodation of products.Therefore,the influences of various reaction conditions such as reaction time,reaction temperature,the usage of catalyst and MTBE to MOP ratios on the reaction activity and selectivity,and the reusablity over H-DAY were further studied.

Abstract:The synthesis of aromatics via CO 2 hydrogenation is receiving an increasing attention. However, the direct conversion of CO 2 to a single aromatic product with high selectivity is very challenging. Herein, we report a synthesis of tetramethylbenzene(TeMB) on a tandem catalyst consisting of ZnZrO and hierarchical ZSM-11 zeolite, the selectivity of TeMB up to 79% in aromatics is achieved while maintaining 76% total aromatic selectivity. Uniform mesopores of ZSM-11 created with mixed TPAOH and NaOH organic-inorganic base are found to be responsible for the increased selectivity of aromatics and TeMB. Based on the acidic property of the catalyst, the increase of TeMB selectivity is attributed to the increase in the amount of the external BrØnsted acid which is increased with the external surface area of ZSM-11 zeolite. More BrØnsted acid on the external surface promotes the alkylation of low-carbon aromatics such as xylene, therefore increases the selectivity of TeMB.

Abstract:The composite solid oxide super acid Pt-SO4 2- /ZrO2-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared, and its structure, surface properties and catalytic activities for n-butane isomerization reaction were investigated by XRD, XPS, SEM, FT-IR. The results showed that the optimum A12O3 loading in the catalyst made ZrO2 tetragonal phase stable, prevented the transformation of ZrO2 from tetragonal phase to monoclinic phase. Pt doping on SO 4 2- /ZrO2-Al2O3 improved the catalytic activities for n-butane isomerization reaction. When the content of Al was 1.5% in the catalyst, the yield of i-butane was 37%, and its selectivity reached 70% above.

Abstract:A zirconium‐based Ziegler–Natta catalytic system has been tested in the dimerization of 1‐butene. It was found that the concentration of Et 2 AlCl, Ph 3 P and PhONa as well as the reaction temperature had great influences on the activity and selectivity of the catalyst. Under the optimum reaction conditions, the conversion of 1‐butene is 91.9%, and the selectivity of dimers is 76.7%. Basic ligands such as Ph 3 P and PhONa can inhibit isomerization of 1‐butene to 2‐butene effectively. In addition, the metal hydride mechanism was also suggested and some indirect evidence was obtained in favor of this mechanism.

Abstract:The alkylation of toluene with tert-butyl alcohol(TBA) is carried out with phosphotungstic acid supported H-mordenite(PW/HM) as catalyst in a 100 mL stainless steel batch reactor equipped with a stirrer.The physicochemical properties of PW/HM with different PW loadings are characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),ammonia program temperature desorption(NH3-TPD) and thermogravimetric(TG) techniques.Their catalytic performances are investigated for the tert-butylation of toluene.When the PW loading is as high as 25%,PW can be highly dispersed on the surface of HM.The calcination temperature of catalyst is 350℃.The influences of various reaction conditions on 25% PW/HM catalyst are discussed.It is found that,when using 25% PW/HM as catalyst,36.3% conversion of toluene and 82.1% selectivity of p-tert-butyltoluene(PTBT) can be obtained under following optimal conditions: 160℃ of reaction temperature,0.6 MPa of initial pressure,3 of molar ratio of tert-butyl alcohol to toluene,5 of w(reactant)/w(catalyst).

Abstract:Hydrocracking product yields of prehydrotreated 1-methyl naphthalene were investigated over the catalysts with different HY zeolite mass fractions and metal loadings. The results indicated that methyltetralin was hydrocracked through mono-atom pathway and large yield of mono-cyclic aromatic was detected accompanied by BTX. Middle and strong B acid sites increased with the increase of HY zeolite mass fraction in catalyst, which favored the transformation of tetralins to mono-aromatic with short side-chain. Increasing metal loadings of the catalyst enhanced the yields of mono and di-cyclic cycloalkane in catalytic hydrocracking of prehydrotreated 1-methyl naphthalene.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of Hβ zeolite treated with different concentration of NaOH on the alkylation of tert-butanol with phenol was studied. The effect of NaOH concentration on the crystallinity, morphology, textural property and acidity of Hβ zeolite was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope characterization (SEM), N 2 adsorption–desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and pyridine adsorption infrared spectra (Py-IR) techniques. A certain concentration of NaOH treatment can regulate the pore structure of Hβ zeolite and remove part of framework aluminum and framework silicon, thus achieving the purpose of regulating the pore structure and acidity of the catalyst. Though lower Bronsted to Lewis acid amount ratio when treated NaOH concentrations were 0.15 mol/L, leading to the increasing of selectivity to 4-TBP. The Hβ-0.2 M showed the high selectivity of 90.21% for synthesis of 4-tert-butyl-phenol (4-TBP), compared with the unmodified parent zeolite, the selectivity of 4-TBP improved 16.7%.

Abstract:HY zeolite is commonly considered to have a suitable pore structure for alkylation of aromatic. However, coke deposition results in catalytic activity falling rapidly because of its strong acidity. Herein, we prepared WO3/HY zeolite catalysts by liquid phase deposition method with phosphotungstic acid as the precursor, and their catalytic activities were evaluated by alkylation of naphthalene and n-tetradecene (C14H28). Characterizations showed that WO3 increased acid density and optimized the distribution of surface acidity and pore structure. The process not only increases the W5+ content which can increase the catalytic activity, but also reduces the reaction temperature to extend the service life. Both advantages of the catalysts achieved 96.12% conversion of naphthalene and 97.46% selectivity of monoalkylnaphthalene.

Abstract:Palladium clusters confined within the micropores of ZSM-5 in protonic form (Pd@ZSM-5) are designed for the selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene. Greatly enhanced selectivity to butenes at similar conversions is achieved on Pd@ZSM-5 as compared with the conventionally adsorption-derived nanoparticle counterpart (Pd/ZSM-5). Pd@ZSM-5 exhibits lower intrinsic activity that can be leveraged by increasing H2-to-butadiene ratio in the feed without sacrificing butenes selectivity. The size and electronic effects of the Pd species on their catalytic performance are discussed by coupling in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and the detailed reaction kinetics of the hydrogenation of butadiene and 1-butene, and the isomerization of 1-butene. It is revealed that the size and location of the Pd species may play a more decisive role in determining the hydrogenation performance rather than the nature of the surface Pd species. Palladium clusters confined in the zeolites channels do not change the π-bonding configuration of butadiene and the adsorption of H2, but significantly weaken the adsorption strength of both butadiene and the primary product - 1-butene, the key factors responsible for the selective hydrogenation.

Abstract:A series of Cu and Zn modified Ni/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared using an incipient impregnation method for the selective hydrogenation of naphthalene into tetralin. X-ray diffraction (XRD), H2-Temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were applied to reveal the structure regulation, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the electronic effect and reactant adsorptions on the active sites. The results showed that the addition of CuO promoted the hydrogenation of naphthalene with an inhibited tetraline selectivity. However, a simultaneously increasing naphthalene conversion and tetraline selectivity were achieved over the Zn modified Ni/Al2O3 catalysts. The characterization and calculation results revealed that the doping of CuO improved the hydrogenation activity with a low tetralin selectivity due to the H spillover from the Cu. The addition of ZnO decreased the interaction between NiOx and Al2O3 in NiZn/Al2O3 catalysts, which efficiently increased the reduction ability of NiOx species and, thus, improved the naphthalene hydrogenation activity. The electron transfer from ZnO to NiOx weakened the adsorption of tetraline and resulted in increased tetraline selectivity. This work provides insight into developing efficient catalysts for heavy aromatics conversions via rational surface engineering.

Abstract:The present study reports nanocrystalline hierarchical zeoite ZSM‐5 as a potential alternative to homogeneous catalysts for the liquid phase tert‐butylation of m‐cresol. Polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride macro‐template was used to develop vacuum‐concentration dual template nano‐precursors by hydrothermal process. The catalytic performance was analyzed for the given reaction and the high percent conversion of reactants with excellent selectivity towards the ortho isomer, 2‐tert‐butyl‐5‐methylphenol was recorded. In contrast, the low activity and selectivity towards the tert‐butylation of m‐cresol, and the selectivity towards the desired product are noticed with the nanocrystalline zeolite ZSM‐5 synthesized without macro‐template. In addition, the catalyst is recoverable due to its robust nature, which indirectly reduces industrial wastage. Various parameters that affect the rate of the reaction were optimized. Kinetic analysis studies showed that the reaction followed first‐order kinetics with respect to tert‐ and the reaction obeyed the Langmuir‐Hinselwood mechanism. The activation energy was determined as 43.0 ± 0.2 kJ/mole. The study reveals that nanocrystalline hierarchical zeolite ZSM‐5 is an efficient, selective, simple, economical and environment‐friendly catalyst for the tert‐butylation of m‐cresol.

Catalytic Conversion of a ≥ 200 °C Fraction Separated from Low-Temperature Coal Tar into Light Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Abstract:A ≥ 200 °C fraction (CT200F) of low-temperature coal tar was prepared by a rotary film evaporator. The catalytic conversion experiments of CT200F and six model compounds were conducted on the pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometer. The yields of catalytic conversion products benzene, toluene, xylene, and naphthalene (BTXN) were analyzed by semi-quantitative analysis according to the chromatographic peak areas. Additionally, the possible formation pathways and mechanisms of the target products BTXN generated over different catalysts were investigated. The results show that the yield of aromatic hydrocarbons increases and the yield of acid compounds decreases during CT200F pyrolysis over ZSM-5, HY, USY, and β-zeolite compared with that of its non-catalytic pyrolysis, especially the yields of BTXN obtained over USY and β-zeolite increase by 128 and 108%, respectively. The pore structure of ZSM-5 is suitable to produce BTX, while the suitable acidity and pore structure of USY, HY, and β-zeolite are more beneficial for the selective preparation of naphthalene than that of ZSM-5. The conversion pathways of six model compounds into BTXN over zeolites were obtained, and the following conclusions can be drawn: The dehydroxylation effect of zeolites shows the order of ZSM-5 > HY > USY > β-zeolite. The catalytic effect of zeolites on the cracking and ring opening of PAHs in CT200F shows the order of β-zeolite > USY > HY > ZSM-5. The catalytic effect of catalysts on the cracking and aromatization of aliphatic compounds shows the order of ZSM-5 > β-zeolite > USY > HY. β-zeolite has an outstanding catalytic performance in the conversion of PAHs into naphthalene. ZSM-5 and HY can effectively remove phenolic hydroxyl groups in phenol and naphthol. During the catalytic conversion processes of the coal tar fraction and model compounds, the catalytic effect of the pore constructions of zeolites is more important than their acidities, which determines whether large molecules can enter and whether acid sites in non-micropores can be effectively utilized.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:A series of hierarchical porous Pt/Hβ catalysts with different mesopores-acidity were synthesized without using secondary template. The pore structures of the catalysts were altered by constructing mesopores through alkali etching to reduce the mass transfer resistance. Moreover, the metal-support interaction (MSI) was optimized to improve the dispersion of the Pt metal particles. The smaller metal species could expose more active sites during the hydrogenation process, along with a more pronounced electron-deficiency effect. Furthermore, the effect of acid sites distribution on the hydrogenation reaction path and product distribution were also investigated. The strong acid-mesopores-metal factor (X) was defined to describe the relationship with the yield of decalin. The yield of decalin was well correlated with a high R2 value of 0.97. The Pt/Hβ-75 catalyst showed the best synergistic effect between acidity, mesopore and Pt species, leading to the optimal naphthalene conversion (96.7%) and higher yield of decalin (76.7%) at a relatively low temperature, which exhibited a better activity than other catalysts reported in literature for hydrogenation of naphthalene at a similar reaction condition. Besides, the hydrogenation reaction mechanism of naphthalene over Pt supported catalysts was further investigated by density functional theory, and the effect of Pt NPs size on the catalytic reaction process and activity was preliminarily revealed.

Abstract:1,3-Butadiene (BD) is a key raw material for the synthesis of rubber, but its efficient synthesis is a challenge. Direct dehydrogenation of n-butane in CO2 (CO2 ODHB) represents an ideal way to produce BD and use the waste CO2 source. In the present work, several catalysts of CrOx supported on CeZr solid solutions were developed and applied in catalyzing the CO2 ODHB to BD. Among these, a 10%CrOx/Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 could achieve the reaction with 25% of n-butane conversion and 70% of BD selectivity at 823 K. The prepared catalysts were characterized using the techniques of XRD, UV–vis-DR, XPS, Raman, N2 adsorption/desorption, FT-IR, TEM, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD, and CO2-TPD, etc. The results indicated that compared with other catalysts, the 10% CrOx/Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 catalyst possessed the highest Cr6+ species concentration and balanced acidic-basic sites, contributing to the outstanding performance in the reaction. These findings provide a strategy to build a catalyst with the stable valence of Cr6+ species, and hopefully, offer an important reference to establish other CeZr solid solution catalysts with regulable acidic-basic and textural properties.

Abstract:The tert-butyl group is a common aliphatic motif extensively employed to implement steric congestion and conformational rigidity in organic and organometallic molecules. Because of the combination of a high bond dissociation energy (~ 100 kcal mol-1) and limited accessibility, in the absence of directing groups, neither radical nor organometallic approaches are effective for the chemical modification of tert-butyl CH bonds. Herein we overcome these limits by employing an electron-poor manganese catalyst that operates in the strong hydrogen bond donor solvent nonafluoro-tert-butyl alcohol (NFTBA) and catalytically activates hydrogen peroxide to generate a powerful manganese-oxo species that effectively oxidizes tert-butyl C−H bonds. Leveraging on the interplay of steric, electronic, medium and torsional effects, site-selective and product chemoselective hydroxylation of the tert-butyl group is accomplished with broad reaction scope, delivering primary alcohols as largely dominant products in preparative yields. Late-stage hydroxylation at tert-butyl sites is demonstrated on 6 densely functionalized molecules of pharmaceutical interest. This work uncovers a novel disconnection approach, harnessing tert-butyl as a potential functional group in strategic synthetic planning for complex molecular architectures.
