Abstract:Transformation into electric or photoelectric functional composite from non-conjugated polymers is a great challenge due to the presence of a large number of locative states. In this paper, carbon nanofiber was synthesized via hydrothermal carbonization utilizing carboxymethyl cellulose as a precursor, and the carbon nanofiber/Cu nanocomposite was constructed for defect passivation. The results indicated that the resulting nanocomposites exhibited good absorbance in visible light range and NIR (near-infrared). The photoconductive responses to typical weak visible light (650 nm et al.) and NIR (808, 980, and 1064 nm) were studied based on Au gap electrodes on flexible polymer substrates. The results exhibited that the nanocomposite’s solid thick film showed photocurrent-switching behaviors to visible light and NIR, the switch-ratio was depending on the wavelengths and power of incident lights. The positive and negative photoconductance responses phenomenon was observed in different compositions and changing excited wavelengths. Their photophysical mechanisms were discussed. This illustrated that the nanocomposites easily produce free electrons and holes via low power of incident light. Free electrons and holes could be utilized for different purposes in multi-disciplinary fields. It would be a potential application in broadband flexible photodetectors, artificial vision, simulating retina, and bio-imaging from visible light to NIR. This is a low-cost and green approach to obtain nanocomposite exhibiting good photocurrent response from the visible range to NIR.
Fabrication of Fluorescent Silica Nanoparticles Hybridized with AIE Luminogens and Exploration of Their Applications As Nanobiosensors in Intracellular Imaging

Abstract:Highly emissive inorganic-organic nanoparticles with core-shell structures are fabricated by a one-pot, surfactant-free hybridization process. The surfactant-free sol-gel reactions of tetraphenylethene- (TPE) and silole-functionalized siloxanes followed by reactions with tetraethoxysilane afford fluorescent silica nanoparticles FSNP-1 and FSNP-2, respectively. The FSNPs are uniformly sized, surface-charged and colloidally stable. The diameters of the FSNPs are tunable in the range of 45-295 nm by changing the reaction conditions. Whereas their TPE and silole precursors are non-emissive, the FSNPs strongly emit in the visible vision, as a result of the novel aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics of the TPE and silole aggregates in the hybrid nanoparticles. The FSNPs pose no toxicity to living cells and can be utilized to selectively image cytoplasm of HeLa cells.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDots)-based solid-state luminescent materials have important applications in light-emitting devices owing to their outstanding optical properties. However, it still remains a challenge to develop multiple-color-emissive solid-state CDots, due to the serious self-quenching of the CDots in the aggregation or solid state. Herein, a one-step synthesis of multiple-color-emissive solid-state silica-coated CDots (silica/CDots) composites by controlling CDots loading fraction and composite morphology to realize the adjustment of emitting color is reported. The emission of resultant silica/CDots composites shifts from blue to orange with the photoluminescence quantum yields of 57.9%, 34.3%, and 32.7% for blue, yellow, and orange emitting, respectively. Furthermore, the yellow emitting silica/CDots composites exhibit an excellent fluorescence thermal stability, and further have been applied to fabricate white-light-emitting devices with a high color rendering index of above 80.

Abstract:Carbon nanodots (CNDs) exhibiting concentration dependent properties have been synthesized through a one-pot hydrothermal reaction process utilizing diethylenetriamine and l -aspartic acid. At solid-state or high concentrations, the CNDs display excitation-wavelength independent fluorescence (FL) emissions, while at low concentrations, they exhibit excitation-wavelength dependent FL emissions. Detailed characterization of the structure and optical properties reveals that the concentration dependent FL properties can be ascribed to the intrinsic-state luminescence of the CNDs at low concentrations and the assembled-state luminescence at solid-state/high concentrations. With the increase of concentration, the self-assembly behavior of CNDs may cause the transition from intrinsic-state dominant luminescence to assembled-state dominant luminescence, and finally lead to the red-shift of FL color. Furthermore, the CNDs@Urea composites possess adjustable room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from turquoise to yellow by controlling the CNDs doping concentration. CNDs with concentration dependent optical properties have shown certain potentials in the fields of cell imaging, fingerprint recognition and anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:Nanocarbon fluorescence materials are promising color converters for multicolor emission via phosphor-coated light emitting devices (LEDs). Herein, a facile time-controlled solvothermal route was developed to prepare solid-state multicolor nanocarbon emitters comprising dot/sheet nanohybrids. The nanocarbons demonstrate an aggregation-induced color switching behavior, leading to tunable light emission from blue to yellow by modulating the solvothermal reaction time. Particularly, these emitters show outstanding film-forming ability directly and a high production yield (approximate to 40%). Moreover, the nanocarbon-coated ultraviolet LEDs exhibit high quality multicolor light emission and excellent color stability at high voltages, impelling the development of emerging carbon phosphors in fundamental research studies and practical applications.

Abstract:The assortment of fluorescence reporters is changing dramatically. Traditionally explored intrinsic fluorescence of biological macromolecules and cellular pigments and of externally introduced organic dyes are presently in strong competition with new nanomaterials. Among them are conjugated polymers, semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots), up-converting nanocrystals, magic-size clusters of silver and gold, nanodiamonds and carbon dots. They demonstrate diverse photophysical behavior and allow one to obtain diverse information when used in analytical tools or when they form images in biological systems. Based on them, functional nanocomposites displaying a variety of useful features, thus extending dramatically the information content of output data, can be constructed. We describe their properties and compare them with those of small-molecular emitters, such as organic dyes. With their aid, one can modulate over a wide range the wavelengths of excitation and emission, the lifetimes and anisotropies and design the systems with 'superenhancement' and 'superquenching'. Such unlimited possibilities are offered by combining different types of luminophores based on electronic conjugation, plasmonic effects or excited-state resonance energy transfer. This tutorial review provides a comparative analysis of the properties of new nanoscale materials and of their hybrid nanocomposites for applications in fluorescence sensing and imaging.

Abstract:Luminescent carbon nanostructures (CNSs) have been intensively researched, but there is still no consensus on a fundamental understanding of their structure and properties that limits their potential applications. In this study, we developed a facile approach to the synthesis of luminescent composite SiO2 nanoparticles/CNSs by the targeted formation of a molecular fluorophore, as the significant luminescent component of CNSs, on the surface of a silica matrix during a one-stage hydrothermal synthesis. Silica nanoparticles were synthesized by reverse microemulsion and used as a matrix for luminescent composites. The as-prepared silica nanoparticles had a functional surface, a spherical shape, and a narrow size distribution of about 29 nm. One-stage hydrothermal treatment of citric acid and modified silica nanoparticles made it possible to directly form the luminescent composite. The optical properties of composites could be easily controlled by changing the hydrothermal reaction time and temperature. Thus, we successfully synthesized luminescent composites with an emission maximum of 450 nm, a quantum yield (QY) of 65 ± 4%, and an average size of ~26 nm. The synthesis of fluorophore doped composite, in contrast to CNSs, makes it possible to control the shape, size, and surface functionality of particles and allows for avoiding difficult and time-consuming fractionation steps.

Abstract:Both a near-infrared (NIR) absorption band and enhanced NIR fluorescence are realized by Songnan Qu, Andrey L. Rogach, and co-workers, in article number 1705913, through surface engineering of carbon dots, exploiting electron-acceptor groups, namely molecules or polymers rich in sulfoxide/carbonyl groups. Twophoton-induced NIR emission and three-photon-induced red emission are simultaneously observed for carbon dots in dimethyl sulfoxide under excitation of a 1400 nm femtosecond pulse laser in the NIR-II window.

Abstract:A set of the highly fluorescent N, S co-doped carbon dots (NSCDs) were prepared through one-step hydrothermal synthesis at different temperature with citric acid as the carbon source and cysteamine as the N, S source. The NSCDs synthesized at 200 °C show significant quantum yield (81%) due to its optimal structure. The structure of the NSCDs changed with varying degrees of carbonization/aromatization and different content of multifunctional groups of C=O, −NH2, −OH, −SH, and N, S-aromatic heterocycte under different preparation temperatures, thus exhibiting tunable fluorescence. Especially, the obtained NSCDs exhibited a blue fluorescence in solution state and changed from strong blue to yellowish-green in its solid state under UV light as a result of the increase in preparation temperature. The as-prepared NSCDs can be used in selective detection of complex anions such as Cr2O72− and Fe(CN)63−, cell imaging, and preparation of fluorescent composite films.Graphical Abstractᅟ

Abstract:We present a facile approach, without the need for external heating and any additional energy input, to produce fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) inexpensively and on a large scale. Fluorescence emission wavelengths from the obtained CDs shift gradually from 630 to 400 nm with reduction in their concentration in solution. This work offers a novel avenue for tuning band gaps in CDs and endowing them with potential for various applications.

Abstract:In this paper, polyamine-functionalized carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized by means of low temperature (<100°C) carbonization of citric acid at the presence of polyethylenimine (PEI), resulting spherical calcium carbonate micro-particles from inverse micro-emulsion system. Nanoscaled spherical silicas were prepared by Stöber method via deposition on the surface of micron calcium carbonate. Scanning- and transmission-electron microscopic analysis confirmed a micro-/nano-complex structure, enabling the composite material coating possessed coarser surface similar to those of 'lotus leaf'. After modification with 1 H, 1 H, 2 H, 2 H-perfluorodecanethiol, both good super hydrophobicity and good fluorescent performance were confirmed by the water contact angle of 154.1°±1.5°, their surface-free energy, and fluorescence quantum yield of 14.1%, which provides an inexpensive and easy way to fabricate superhydrophobic material with fluorescence characteristics and promotes high value application of inorganic materials.

Abstract:Advances in polymeric matrices with ultralong and color-tunable phosphorescence were recently made, but their luminescence mechanism was not yet thoroughly understood. The current experimental and theoretical studies show that the red-shift of phosphorescence spectrum is caused by increasing the C–N and C=O of carbon dots in the polymeric matrix In addition, theoretical calculations explain the charge transfer and spin orbit coupling of carbon dots in a system containing different covalent bonds . The phosphorescence emission color and lifetime can be modulated, which is applied into triple anti-counterfeiting of photo-stimulated-dependent color, time-dependent color, and time-dependent phosphorescence lifetime. In the application, the phosphorescence color of carbon dots in the polymeric matrix can be varied from deep blue (431 nm) to red (620 nm) with a maximal lifetime of 2.02 s and a maximum phosphorescence quantum yield of 20.1%. This work provides a new direction for the development of carbon dots with efficient and color-tunable ultra-long phosphorescence.

Abstract:Tunable composite materials with interesting physical behavior can be designed through integrating unique optical properties of solid nanostructures with the facile responses of soft matter to weak external stimuli, but this approach remains challenged by their poorly controlled co-assembly at the mesoscale. Using scalable wet chemical synthesis procedures, we fabricated anisotropic gold-silica-dye colloidal nanostructures and then organized them into the device-scale (demonstrated for square inch cells) electrically tunable composites by simultaneously invoking molecular and colloidal self-assembly. We show that the ensuing ordered colloidal dispersions of shape-anisotropic nanostructures exhibit tunable fluorescence decay rates and intensity. We characterize how these properties depend on low-voltage fields and polarization of both the excitation and emission light, demonstrating a great potential for the practical realization of an interesting breed of nanostructured composite materials.

Abstract:Luminescent composites based on entirely non-toxic, environmentally friendly compounds are in high demand for a variety of applications in photonics and optoelectronics. Carbon dots are a recently developed kind of luminescent nanomaterial that is eco-friendly, biocompatible, easy-to-obtain, and inexpensive, with a stable and widely tunable emission. Herein, we introduce luminescent composites based on carbon dots of different chemical compositions and with different functional groups at the surface which were embedded in a nanoporous silicate glass. The structure and optical properties of these composites were comprehensively examined using electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared transmission, UV-Vis absorption, and steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence. It is shown that the silicate matrix efficiently preserved, and even enhanced the emission of different kinds of carbon dots tested. The photoluminescence quantum yield of the fabricated nanocomposite materials reached 35–40%, which is comparable to or even exceeds the values for carbon dots in solution.

Abstract:Fluorescent silica nanoparticles (FSNPs) with efficient light emission, colloidal stability, and size tunability are fabricated by one-pot, two-step Stober and reverse microemulsion techniques. Tetraphenylethene (TPE)- and silole-functionalized siloxanes are facilely synthesized by click reactions and their sol-gel reactions followed by reactions with tetraethoxysilane generate FSNPs with core-shell structures. The FSNPs are uniformly sized with smooth surfaces, and show high surface charges and hence excellent colloidal stability. UV irradiation of ethanol solutions of the FSNPs gives strong blue and green light at 474 and 486 nm in high fluorescence quantum yields, thanks to the novel aggregation-induced emission attributes of the TPE and silole aggregates in the hybrid nanoparticles. The FSNPs are benign to living cells and function as fluorescent visualizers for intracellular imaging of HeLa cells.

Abstract:Fluorescent silica-doped polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) composites with high optical properties have been successfully prepared in a one-pot synthesis through the incorporation of silica nanoparticles and dye molecules into the crosslinked PVP. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and fluorescence spectrometry are used to investigate the morphologies and optical properties of the composites. By adjusting the PVP content and reaction time, fluorescent silica-doped PVP film and fluorescent PVP-covered silica core shell nanoparticles are obtained without stirring and under magnetic stirring, respectively. Because both the silica nanoparticles and the dye molecules react with ring-opened PVP, the composites exhibit highly stable optical properties. The obtained fluorescent composites may have potential applications in sensing and photovoltaic systems. The facile approach can be extended to the preparation of multifunctional fluorescent PVP composites by introducing other types of oxides.
