Abstract:Highly emissive inorganic-organic nanoparticles with core-shell structures are fabricated by a one-pot, surfactant-free hybridization process. The surfactant-free sol-gel reactions of tetraphenylethene- (TPE) and silole-functionalized siloxanes followed by reactions with tetraethoxysilane afford fluorescent silica nanoparticles FSNP-1 and FSNP-2, respectively. The FSNPs are uniformly sized, surface-charged and colloidally stable. The diameters of the FSNPs are tunable in the range of 45-295 nm by changing the reaction conditions. Whereas their TPE and silole precursors are non-emissive, the FSNPs strongly emit in the visible vision, as a result of the novel aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics of the TPE and silole aggregates in the hybrid nanoparticles. The FSNPs pose no toxicity to living cells and can be utilized to selectively image cytoplasm of HeLa cells.
Highly Photostable and Ph−sensitive Nanosensors

Abstract:Determination of pH values has a vital influence in many chemical and biological processes. To accurately determine pH values, we fabricated a highly photostable ratiometric fluorescent pH−sensitive nanosensor by staining the core of mesoporous silica nanoparticle with a rhodol dye and chemically labelling its outer shell with a rhodamine derivative dye. The two dyes possess opposite pH−responding directions, which increases the band of the signal change. There is a nine−fold change in fluorescence intensity ratios when the solution pH changes from 3.0 and 9.0. Meanwhile, the nanosensors displayed yellowish emission in low pH value, orange emission in mid pH value, and reddish emission in high pH value, which can be readily inspected by bare eyes. Last but not least, excellent photostability and reversibility features make the nanosensors useful for the continuous measuring of pH with high accuracy.

Abstract:Benefiting from self-calibration and visualization features, ratiometric luminescent probe has attracted growing attention for fluorescence detection and sensors. Here, terbium complex functionalized graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-silica ternary nanocomposites have been constructed by an interfacial self-assembling method, wherein the silica nanoparticles and terbium complex are grafted on the g-C3N4 surface by substitution and coordination reactions. It is revealed that, by using silica as an interlayer, the fluorescence intensity of Tb3+ ion is improved by nearly three times and the fluorescence lifetime is increased from 456 to 564 mu s. Both nanocomposites can be utilized as ratiometric luminescent probes for anthrax biomarker of dipicolinic acid. It is further found that the detection limit is decreased by four times for the ternary nanocomposites as compared with that of binary ones, suggesting that silica layer can enhance the luminescent emissions from Tb3+ ions due to inhibition of fluores-cence resonance energy transfer from terpyridyl to g-C3N4.

Abstract:Strongly fluorescent multicore/shell structured CdTe@SiO2 composite particles of similar to 50 nm were synthesized via the reverse microemulsion method by using CdTe quantum dots co-stabilized by thioglycolic acid and thioglycerol. The optical stability of the CdTe@SiO2 composite particles in a wide pH range, under prolonged UV irradiation in pure water, or in different types of physiological buffers was systematically investigated. Towards immunofluorescence assay, both poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and carboxyl residues were simultaneously grafted on the surface of the silanol-terminated CdTe@SiO2 composite particles upon further reactions with silane reagents bearing a PEG segment and carboxyl group, respectively, in order to suppress the nonspecific interactions of the silica particles with proteins and meanwhile introduce reactive moieties to the fluorescent particles. Agarose gel electrophoresis, dynamic light scattering and conventional optical spectroscopy were combined to investigate the effectiveness of the surface modifications. Via the surface carboxyl residue, various antibodies were covalently conjugated to the fluorescent particles and the resultant fluorescent probes were used in detecting cancer cells through both direct fluorescent antibody and indirect fluorescent antibody assays, respectively.

Abstract:Pyranine (HPTS) is a remarkably interesting pH sensitive dye that has been used for plenty of applications. Its high quantum yield and extremely sensitive ratiometric fluorescence against pH change makes it a very favorable for pH sensing applications and development of pH nano/microsensors. However, its strong negative charge and lack of easily modifiable functional groups makes it difficult to be used with charged substrates such as silica. This study reports a noncovalent HPTS immobilization methodology on silica microparticles that considers the retention of pH sensitivity as well as long term stability of the pH microsensors. The study emphasizes on importance of surface charge for governing the sensitivity of the immobilized HPTS dye molecules on silica microparticles. Importance of methodology of immobilization that preserves the sensitivity as well as stability of the microsensors is also assessed.

Abstract:Ultrasmall fluorescent nanomaterials have been widely studied as novel fluorescent probes; however, these nanomaterials are prone to structural damage or aggregation, and the sensitivity and accuracy of most single emission fluorescence probes were very low. Therefore, the controlled synthesis of stable dual-emission ratiometric fluorescence ultrasmall assembly probes still remains a challenge. Herein, star-like polymer unimolecular micelles were utilized as a scaffold template to encapsulate fluorescent ultrasmall carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) via the polymer template directed self-assembly strategy to obtain multiple-responsive ratiometric fluorescent assemblies. The assemblies were ultrastable, well-defined, and nearly monodispersed with controlled size, regular morphology, and pH- and thermal-responsiveness. The assemblies can be applied to realize rapid, sensitive, quantitative, and specific detection of Cu2+ and GSH. Moreover, the convenient rapid real-time detection was realized via the combination of the visualized paper-based sensor, and the multilevel information encryption was also achieved.

Abstract:Phosphorescence analyses have attracted broad attention due to their remarkable merits of the elimination of auto-fluorescence and scattering light. However, it remains a great challenge to develop novel materials with uniform size and morphology, stability, long lifetime, and aqueous-phase room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) characteristics. Herein, monodisperse and uniform RTP nanobeads were fabricated by an in situ covalent hybridization of carbon dots (CDs) and dendritic mesoporous silicon nanoparticles (DMSNs) via silane hydrolysis. The formation of Si–O–C and Si–C/N covalent bonds is beneficial for the fixation of vibrations and rotations of the luminescent centers. Specially, the nanopores of DMSNs provide a confined area that can isolate the triplet state of CDs from water and oxygen and thus ensure the occurrence of aqueous-phase RTP with an ultra-long lifetime of 1.195 s (seen by the naked eye up to 9 seconds). Through surface modifying folic acid (FA), CDs@DMSNs can serve as a probe to distinguish different cell lines that feature varying FA receptor expression levels. In addition, taking MCF-7 as the model, highly sensitive and quantitative detection (linear range: 10 3 –10 6 cells per mL) has been achieved via an RTP probe. Furthermore, their potential applications in cellular and in vivo time-gated phosphorescence imaging have been proposed and demonstrated, respectively. This work would provide a new route to design CD-based RTP composites and promote their further applications in the medical and biological fields.

Ratiometric Detection of Zn2+ and Cd2+ Based on Self-Assembled Nanoarchitectures with Dual Emissions Involving Aggregation Enhanced Emission (AEE) and Its Application

Abstract:Glutathione-Au nanoclusters (GSH-AuNCs) are known as typical luminophores with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features, which can be triggered by low temperature, low pH values, and metal ions. However, these strict "triggers" restrict the application of this AIE probe under mild and neutral conditions. In this work, fluorescent amino-modified silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) and GSH-AuNCs can self-assemble into well-designed nanospheres through electrostatic interactions under physiological conditions. The hybrid probe of SiNPs@GSH-AuNCs exhibits dual emissions located at 450 nm from SiNPs and 570 nm originating from the aggregation enhanced emission (AEE) of GSH-AuNCs. Interestingly, the addition of Zn2+ or Cd2+ can connect the nanospheres to form large aggregates, so a unique second increase of AEE from GSH-AuNCs appears, while the emission of SiNPs remains constant to act as an internal reference. The fluorescence ratios (I570/I450) of SiNPs@GSH-AuNCs are positively correlated with Zn2+ or Cd2+ with the linear range from 1.5 μM to 500 μM. Most importantly, besides the advantages of dual emissions, high fluorescence brightness, and good stability, the SiNPs@GSH-AuNCs also exhibit excellent biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity, and have been successfully applied in zinc imaging in live cells. Furthermore, the proposed method is also used to measure Zn2+ and Cd2+ in real samples with satisfactory recoveries.
A Facile Way to Fabricate CdSe Quantum Dots Coated with Silica and the Fluorescence Property

Abstract:Good quality quantum dots (QDs) CdSe were prepared with a novel and non-TOP method. Quantum dots with different sizes ranging from 2 to 5 nm could be obtained by removing aliquots of reaction solution at different time intervals. The quantum dots CdSe (core) -silica (shell) was fabricated by a microemulsion method. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images confirmed the well monodispersed QDs and the silica shell around CdSe core respectively. UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra clearly indicated that both the original QDs and the silica-coated QDs had good fluorescence properties. The quantum dots coated with silica shell are water-soluble and less toxic (due to the silica shell), which are anticipated as fluorescent probes for biosensing and imaging applications such as tumor detection of pre-cancers.

Abstract:A cationic water-soluble poly(p-phenylene vinylene) derivative (poly{2-methoxy-5-[3-(N,N,N-ethyldimethylamino)-1-propoxyl-1,4-phenylene vinylene}bromide) was synthesized by a facile approach. The fluorescence of the conjugated polyelectrolyte was enhanced in the presence of an anionic surfactant because of the regularity of the chain conformation. Meanwhile, its emission was efficiently quenched by a trace amount (10(-6) mol/L) of the iron complex Fe(CN)(6)(4-) with pronounced quenching efficiency. The cationic conjugated polymer chains were readily assembled on the surface of negatively charged CdTe quantum dots through electrostatic attraction. The resulting nanocomposites facilitated the charge transfer between the conjugated polymers and the quantum dots because of the extensive interfacial area and intimate contact of the two components. Abstract:Novel silica-coated terbium(III) chelate fluorescent nanoparticles have been prepared and characterized as a new type of fluorescence probe for highly sensitive time-resolved fluorescence bioassay. The preparation was carried out in a water-in-oil microemulsion containing a strongly fluorescent Tb(3+) chelate, N,N,N(1),N(1)-[2,6-bis(3'-aminomethyl-1'-pyrazolyl)-phenylpyridine]tetrakis(acetate)-Tb(3+), Triton X-100, hexanol, and cyclohexane by controlling hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate. The nanoparticles are spherical and uniform in size, 42 +/- 3 nm in diameter, strongly fluorescent, and highly photostable and have enough of a long fluorescence lifetime (1.52 ms) for time-resolved fluorescence measurement. A stable and nontoxic method was developed for the surface modification and protein immobilization of the nanoparticles. As a model of application, the nanoparticle-labeled streptavidin was prepared and used in a sandwich-type time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay of human prostate-specific antigen (PSA) by using a 96-well microtiter plate as the solid-phase carrier. The method gives a detection limit of 7.0 pg/mL for the PSA assay.

Abstract:The trivalent europium ion (Eu3+) has garnered a great deal of interest for the design of luminescent materials possessing compound-independent emission bands, strong luminescent intensity, and long emission lifetimes. We herein introduce a synthetic methodology capable of constructing visual luminescent probes from Eu3+ complex-functionalized silica nanocomposites and their Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films at interfaces. In order to facilitate the coordinative stabilization of Eu3+ over carrier surfaces, silica nanoparticles (nanoSiO2) were pregrafted with terpyridyl (TPy) to make nanoSiO2TPy linkers. Then, a well-designed coordination reaction of nanoSiO2TPy with EuCl3 and 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (DPA) was carried out at solid-liquid and air-water interfaces, where our desired material (denoted as nanoSiO2TPy@EuDPA) and its corresponding LB film are obtained. The presence of TPy and DPA interacting with Eu3+ plays a key role in regulating the chemical nature of the particle surface, hence giving rise to closely packed nanocomposite arrays in the film. As a result, the improvement in uniformity and stability is achieved alongside the enhancement in emission intensity and lifetime. With such advantageous optical properties, we find them workable as facile, green, and affordable luminescent sensors, by which a range of common toxic anions (Cr2O72-, MnO4-, and PO43-) can be visually and quantitatively recognized. Notably, the LB film-based material could afford a higher Ksv value (1.53 × 105 M-1), a lower detection limit (0.157 μM), and better recyclability than its original powder analogue, showcasing its utility as a more promising candidate for practical use.

Abstract:[Ru(bpy)3]2+-doped silica (RuSi) nanoparticles were synthesized by using a water/oil microemulsion method. Stable electrochemiluminescence (ECL) was obtained when the RuSi nanoparticles were immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode by using tripropylamine (TPA) as a coreactant. Furthermore, the ECL of the RuSi nanoparticles with layer-by-layer biomolecular coatings was investigated. Squential self-assembly of the polyelectrolytes and biomolecules on the RuSi nanoparticles gave nanocomposite suspensions, the ECL of which decreased on increasing the number of bilayers. Moreover, factors that affected the assembly and ECL signals were investigated. The decrease in ECL could be assigned to steric hindrance and limited diffusion of the coreactant molecules in the silica matrix after they were attached to the biomolecules. Since surface modification of the RuSi nanoparticles can improve their biocompatibility and prevent leaking of the [Ru(bpy)3]2+ ions, the RuSi nanoparticles can be readily used as efficient and stable ECL tag materials in immunoassay and DNA detection.

Abstract:Highly blue fluorescent carbon nanodots (CNDs) were synthesized by the hydrothermal method from citric acid and diethylenetriamine with the quantum yield of about ∼86%. Quercetin (QCT) and its fluorescent metal-ion complex (QCT-Al3+) can efficiently coordinate on the surface of CNDs, the emission of CNDs at 429nm completely overlapped with the absorption peak of QCT-Al3+ at 428nm. Therefore, a ratiometric fluorescence sensor for Al3+ was developed based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) with CNDs as donor and QCT-Al3+ as acceptor. A linear calibration of F 429/F 481 versus aluminum ion concentration was obtained within 1–20 and 20–60μM, along with a detection limit of 558nM. Moreover, the ESIPT–FRET ratiometric fluorescence system based on the CNDs/QCT-Al3+ was applied for fluorescent test papers with satisfying resolution.

Abstract:A novel fluorescent photonic crystal (FPC) film is created for the first time via self-assembly of a new kind of uniform fluorescent silica colloids. The fluorescent silica colloids have first been synthesized by combination of stober method and direct calcination, which are then used as building blocks for formation of FPC films with opal structure via vertical deposition method. The FPC films with brilliant structural colors could be obtained, depending on fluorescent silica colloids with various diameters. Importantly, the FPC films exhibit good fluorescent property, e.g., emitting blue under 365 nm UV light. Moreover, the FPC films could be used as a sensor for highly sensitive detection of copper ions concentration via dual detection mode, fluorescence and reflection mode. The FPC films not only appear low detection of limit (DOL), but show good selectivity for copper ions, various concentrations (from 1 nM to 100 mu M) of copper ions could be precisely confirmed.

Abstract:This paper describes the formation of magnetic and fluorescent nanocomposite particles which consist of superparamagnetic Fe3O4 core, SiO2 shell and organic dye (FITC) coating layer on their surface. The obtained nanocomposites possess typical superparamagnetism and exhibit clear green fluorescence image. And their fluorescence emission is pH-dependent, which would be applied to pH sensing.

The preparation was carried out in a water-in-oil microemulsion containing a strongly fluorescent Tb3+ chelate, N,N,N-1,N-1-[2,6-bis(3'-aminomethyl-1'-pyrazolyl)-phenylpyridinene]tetrakis(acetate)-Tb3+, Triton X-100, hexanol, and cyclohexane by controlling hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate. The nanoparticles are spherical and uniform in size, 42 +/- 3 nm in diameter, strongly fluorescent, and highly photostable and have enough of a long fluorescence lifetime (1.52 ms) for time-resolved fluorescence measurement. A stable and nontoxic method was developed for the surface modification and protein immobilization of the nanoparticles. As a model of application, the nanoparticle-labeled streptavidin was prepared and used in a sandwich-type time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay of human prostate-specific antigen (PSA) by using a 96-well microtiter plate as the solid-phase carrier. The method gives a detection limit of 7.0 pg/mL for the PSA assay.
High-loading ultrastable CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum dots in hierarchical Silicalite-1 by elimination of co-templates for multimodal optical applications

Abstract:All-inorganic CsPbBr 3 perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) show superior photophysical properties and great potential in various optoelectronic devices, but their low lattice formation energy and high delocalization of surface ions make it susceptible to ambient conditions. In this work, hierarchical silicalite-1 zeolite co-templated by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) was applied to encapsulate CsPbBr 3 PQDs. Particularly, distinct nanosized CNTs, mass ratios of zeolite to CsPbBr 3 , and thermal diffusion temperature were systematically studied to optimize the loading capacity and luminescent efficiency of CsPbBr 3 PQDs. Consequently, the micro-/mesoporous structured silicalite-1 confined CsPbBr 3 PQDs composite obtained at 700 °C exhibited the best luminescent performance with a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 25 nm, a high PLQY (~ 61.9 %) and ultrahigh stability (> 100 days in H 2 O). The CsPbBr 3 /Silicalite-1 nanocomposite shows dual-mode temperature monitoring performance in terms of fluorescence emission intensity and spectral shift, rendering it promising prospect acting as credible optical thermometer. Latent fingerprint identification and selective Fe 3+ fluorescence sensing applicability of the CsPbBr 3 /Silicalite-1 nanocomposite were then developed. Also, a reversible off/on switching of the green fingerprint image under UV-light irradiation can be easily modulated by spraying Fe 3+ aqueous solution and pure H 2 O, respectively, achieving the effective anti-counterfeiting application.
