Abstract:Doping with anion and cation impurities is an effective approach to tune the photoelectrochemical properties of TiO2. Here, we explore the Rh monodoping and (Rh + F) codoping effect on electronic structures and photocatalytic activities of anatase TiO2 by performing extensive density functional theory calculations. Upon Rh monodoping the band gap of TiO2 can be effectively reduced. But this cationic dopant creates an unoccupied intermediate localized state within the band gap, which will act as photogenerated carrier recombination center, which reduces the photocatalytic efficiency. Fortunately, we find that the stable charge-compensated donor-acceptor pair (Rh + F) codoping in TiO2 can effectively reduce the band gap by forming a delocalized intermediate band within the band gap. Moreover, the band edge alignment in the (Rh + F) codoped TiO2 is desirable for water splitting. The calculated optical absorption curve of (Rh + F) codoped TiO2 verifies that it has significantly improved visible light absorption. These findings imply that the (Rh + F) codoped TiO2 is a promising visible light photocatalyst for water splitting.

Abstract:First-principles calculations reveal potentially optimal photoelectrochemical activity of anatase TiO2 by means of (C, S), (C, Se), or (N, P) codoping. It is found that the absorption edge is substantially redshifted to visible regime with overall spectra considerably better than monodoped TiO2. The resulting optical gap straddle the redox potentials of H2O remarkably well. The reason for the significant improvements is the direct chemical bonding between the codopants. We expect this generic band-structure tailoring scheme also applies to other photocatalytic systems and beyond.
Surface Energy-Driven Solution Epitaxial Growth of Anatase TiO2 Homostructures for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been extensively investigated as a photocatalyst for water splitting to produce H-2. However, an overall water splitting by using anatase TiO2 is extremely difficult due to the short lifetime of holes. In this work, we propose that a surface energy decrease from {001} to {101} of anatase TiO2 is able to drive an epitaxial growth. A novel anatase TiO2 homostructure has been successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route, where {101} semi-pyramid nanoparticles epitaxially grew on the both sides of the {001} nanosheets. The epitaxial relationship between the nanoparticles and the nanosheets has been characterized to be {001}/1{001} of anatase TiO2. For the first time, it is interesting to find that the homostructure with 12 wt% of {101} semi-pyramid can significantly improve the H-2 evolution rate by nearly 5 times compared to the pure nanosheets under the ultraviolet irradiation. More importantly, such homostructure enables 10.78 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) of O-2 production whereas the pure nanosheets cannot evolve detectable O-2 gas. Meanwhile, the time-resolved photoluminescence analysis indicates that the mean lifetime of the holes is increased from 2.20 ns of the nanosheets to 3.59 ns of the homostructure, accounting for the observed overall water splitting. The findings suggest that constructing a homostructure by a surface energy strategy could be promising towards overall water splitting, which may be applicable to other photocatalytic materials. Abstract:Codoping is an effective method to improve the photoelectrochemical performance of anatase TiO2. In this work, through performing extensive hybrid density functional theory calculations, we explore the (Zn + S) and (Cd + S) codoping effects on the electronic structures and photocatalytic activities of anatase TiO2. Theoretical results clearly reveal that the coupling of the incorporated S dopant with the second-nearest neighboring O atom assisted by the acceptor metals leads to the fully occupied and delocalized intermediate bands within the band gap, which originate from the S-O antibonding states (pi*). This kind of metal-assisted S-O coupling can not only effectively reduce the band gap of TiO2, but also prevent the recombination of the photogenerated carriers. Moreover, the visible light absorption of anatase TiO2 is significantly enhanced via codoping, and both the reduction and oxidation potentials of water lie within the band gap of the (Zn + S) and (Cd + S) codoped anatase TiO2, which are desirable for photocatalytic water splitting. These theoretical findings imply that the metal-assisted S-O coupling is an effectively approach to engineer the band structures and the visible light photoelectrochemical performance of semiconductors photocatalysts. Abstract:In this work, a solution combustion followed by dissolution in hydrogen peroxide is adopted to achieve a precursor for decorating anatase TiO2 nanosheets along single-crystalline rutile TiO2 nanorods, which achieves balsam-pear-like core/shell nanorod arrays with enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting. The enhanced photoelectrochemical performance is attributed to the novel nanoarchitecture, which can simultaneously offer a high surface area, enhanced light-harvesting, a rutile/anatase junction for charge carrier separation and a conductive pathway for charge carrier collection. The photoanode design can also give hints to other functional materials.

Abstract:The charge migration mechanism across the surface heterojunction constructed on anatase TiO 2 nanocrystal is still under debate. To solve this longstanding question, we present a systematic study of the band edges (vs standard hydrogen electrode, SHE) of aqueous TiO 2 interfaces with anatase (101), (001) and (100) surfaces, using a combination of the density functional theory based molecular dynamics (DFTMD) and efficient computational SHE (cSHE) methods. Our calculations show that the conduction band minimum (CBM) of (101) surface is lower than that of (001) and (100) surfaces, which is thermodynamically favorable for electrons migrating to (101) surface through the surface heterojunction. While the holes preferentially accumulate on (100) surface due to its highest valence band minimum (VBM). In addition, we qualitatively explore the facet-dependent photocatalytic activity of anatase TiO 2 . Due to the possession of both beneficial atomic structure (with 100% undercoordinated Ti 5c atoms at the surface) and electronic structure (more strongly oxidizing holes in the VBM and efficient electron-hole spatial separation separation), (001) surface exhibits the most efficient photocatalytic performance for water oxidation. Furthermore, it is confirmed that the use of simplified theoretical models neglecting the detailed atomic structures of water at aqueous interface is inadequate to predict the band alignment of semiconductor relative to water redox potentials, so that it may result in substantial errors in evaluating the photocatalytic performance of materials to be used for water splitting.

Abstract:The synergistic coupling of light and heat in solar energy has attracted increasing research attention. In this work, both codoping and coloading were applied to SrTiO3-based catalysts to improve their solar photo and thermal conversion, respectively, and maximum productivities of 51.55 and 25.59 mmol.g(-1).h(-1) were achieved for H-2 and O-2 in photothermal synergistic water splitting. The yield of H-2 was nearly double that achieved via pure photocatalysis. In addition to many experiments and characterizations, DFT calculations were also performed to clarify the photothermal synergy. It was found that both the light absorbance and mobility of photoinduced carriers could be promoted by solar thermal effects in the material. Meanwhile, the energy barriers of the key steps were reduced with increasing temperature in the hydrogen production driven by solar photo effects. This work offers new ideas for designing catalysts for solar hydrogen production with photothermal synergistic strategies.
Effect of Compensated Codoping on the Photoelectrochemical Properties of Anatase TiO2 Photocatalyst

Abstract:An effective codoping approach is described to modify the photoelectrochemical properties of anatase TiO2 by doping with nonmetal (N or C) and transition metal (Nb or Ta) impurities. Here, compensated and noncompensated codoped TiO2 systems are constructed with different proportions and dopant species, and then their dopant formation energies and electronic properties are calculated to study the stability and visible-light photoactivity by first-principles density functional theory incorporating the LDA+U formalism, respectively. The calculated results demonstrate that the codoping with transition metals facilitates the enhancement of the concentration of p-type dopants (N and C) in the host lattice. Especially, both 1:2 compensated Nb/C/Nb and Ta/C/Ta codopings not only reduce the energy gap to enhance the optical absorption and eliminate the local trapping to improve carrier mobility and conversion efficiency but also do not lower the reduction potential of the conduction band edge. Our designated strategies of codoped anatase TiO2 simultaneously meet the criteria for water splitting. It should be pointed out that, to be successful, the proper proportion of transition metal and nonmetal impurities in the host lattice should be controlled so that reasonable photoelectrochemical properties can be achieved.
Epitaxial facet junctions on TiO2 single crystals for efficient photocatalytic water splitting

Abstract:Metal oxide semiconductors with surface homojunctions characteristic of continuous band bending and well-defined epitaxial interfaces show amazing potential for photocatalytic applications. Herein, a new concept of facet junctions is proposed and validated according to the synergy between the co-exposed crystal facets of shape-tailored anatase TiO2 single crystals. By considering the atomic and electronic interactions between the co-exposed facets, our density functional theory calculations reveal the existence of type-II band alignment between the co-exposed {001} and {101} facets. This band alignment results in in situ construction of a facet junction to allow built-in facet-mediated carrier transfer. The self-constructed {101}/{001} facet junction, due to the effective carrier separation between different exposed facets, exhibits a significantly enhanced quantum efficiency and catalytic performance in photochemical hydrogen generation compared to TiO2 poly-crystals. These findings open a new horizon of facet junction-engineered nano-catalysts for more robust and efficient energy and environmental applications.
Synergistic effects of carbon doping and coating of TiO2 with exceptional photocurrent enhancement for high performance H2 production from water splitting

Abstract:The “one pot” simultaneous carbon coating and doping of TiO2 materials by the hydrolysis of TiCl4 in fructose is reported. The synergistic effect of carbon doping and coating of TiO2 to significantly boost textural, optical and electronic properties and photocurrent of TiO2 for high performance visible light H2 production from water splitting has been comprehensively investigated. Carbon doping can significantly increase the thermal stability, thus inhibiting the phase transformation of the Titania material from anatase to rutile while carbon coating can suppress the grain aggregation of TiO2. The synergy of carbon doping and coating can not only ensure an enhanced narrowing effect of the electronic band gap of TiO2 thus extending the absorption of photocatalysts to the visible regions, but also promote dramatically the separation of electron-hole pairs. Owing to these synergistic effects, the carbon coated and doped TiO2 shows much superior photocatalytic activity for both degradation of organics and photocatalytic/photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting under simulated sunlight illumination. The photocatalytic activity of obtained materials can reach 5, 4 and 2 times higher than that of pristine TiO2, carbon doped TiO2 and carbon coated TiO2, respectively in the degradation of organic pollutants. The carbon coated and doped TiO2 materials exhibited more than 37 times and hundreds of times photocurrent enhancement under simulated sunlight and visible light, respectively compared to that of pristine TiO2. The present work providing new comprehensive understanding on carbon coating and doping effect could be very helpful for the development of advanced TiO2 materials for a large series of applications.

Abstract:Increasing the quantum conversion efficiency in visible-light region is a key issue for the efficient usage of solar energy in the process of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Here, based on the N anion and S cation codoped TiO2 thin film photoanodes, we find experimentally and theoretically that the transport ability of visible-light-induced carriers can be notably enhanced by engineering the dopant electronic energy states. The hole transport resistivity is decreased from 6.8 × 104 to 1.3 × 104 Ω m via delocalizing the introduced bands, leading to an evident increase of the internal quantum efficiency from 5% to 20% at the visible-light region of 450–550 nm. Further DFT calculations exhibit that the split of the isolated band is induced by a strong N and S hybridization, which favors to decrease the hole effective mass and to improve the hole mobility by three times. The photocurrent of N − S codoped TiO2 thin film is thus twice that of monodoping cases, the best value for doping modified TiO2 thin film photoanodes. This work may provide not only a design principle but also a candidate for tailoring and optimizing TiO2 towards high PEC activity.

Abstract:Photoelectrodes based on reduced TiO 2 are being extensively studied in the search for photocatalytic materials that can perform solar-driven water splitting and renewable hydrogen production. To date, substantial efforts have been devoted to understanding the microscopic mechanisms that underlie their photoelectrochemical (PEC) behavior, but this is a critical missing input to the Ti 3 d carriers that govern the PEC activity. In this study the single and co-doping (N, H) in anatase TiO 2 are prepared for PEC hydrogen production. The codoped photocathode delivers much better PEC performance from the enhanced solar light response and a fast electron pathway. Soft x-ray spectroscopy including x-ray absorption (XAS) and photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been used to investigate the location and occupation of the defect levels from doping, through which the relevant engineered electronic properties in doped TiO 2 are determined. It is shown that co-doping effectively produce the substitutional nitrogen in comparison with single doping. The Ti 3+ defect states promoted by doping introduces localized Ti 3 d -derived states below Fermi level ( E F ), resulting in a large reduction (approximately 1 eV) in the band gap of co-doped TiO 2 . The progressive production of oxygen vacancies eventually causes a surface band upward-bending induced electron transfer mechanism critical for charge separation. The present insights into defect chemistry and its determination to the electronic structure of co-doped TiO 2 provide important guidance for using TiO 2 in electrocatalysis and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Herein, we present the decoration of NiFeCoAlOOH nanoparticles onto titanium doped nanoporous hematite (Ti-PH) utilizing a simple electroless ligand-controlled oxidation method for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Owing to the improved oxygen evolution reaction kinetics and reduced charge transfer resistance, the resulting Ti-PH/NiFeCoAlOOH photoanode presents an excellent photocurrent density of 2.46 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE and good stability compared to Ti-PH or bare hematite. Furthermore, the onset potential of the photocurrent density is shifted cathodically by ∼60 mV with reference to the titanium doped nanoporous hematite. This work offers a promising method for designing high-performance, stable, and inexpensive catalysts for photoelectrochemical applications.

Tailoring the electronic structure of anatase TiO2(001) surface through W and N codoping: a DFT calculation

Abstract:Using density functional theory, we calculated the geometries, band structures and densities of states of W-doped, N-doped, and W/N-codoped anatase TiO4 (001) and (101) surfaces, as well as while the formation energies, based on the overall reaction energy diagram. The calculated results reveal that, on the two surfaces, the absorption of W atoms are more stable than that of N atoms while a larger energy barrier blocks the transfer of W atoms from the surfaces to the body. For TiO2(001), the W-doping and the N/W-codoping lead to a visible lattice distortion while the recombination of photo-generated electron-holes pairs is reduced. A comprehensive analysis of the electronic structures show that the band-gap narrows and a new W-N bond appears, which obviously enhance the photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Hematite has been recognized as a promising photoanode materials for the photoelectrochemical water splitting application. A Co–Pi/Fe2TiO5/Fe2O3 composite film has been fabricated by photo-assisted electrodeposition of Co–Pi nanoparticles on the surface of Ti-treated Fe2O3 nanorod arrays, grown perpendicularly on the FTO substrate via one-step hydrothermal method. The films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocurrent response of obtained photoanode with an enhanced photocurrent density of 1.09 and 0.75 mA/cm2 under front-side and back-side illumination compared to Fe2TiO5/Fe2O3, Co–Pi/Fe2O3, and Co–Pi/Fe2TiO5/Fe2O3, due to the suppressed charge carrier recombination and water oxidation dynamics, further indicating that the different effect for the improvement of PEC performance for the front or back sides. Meanwhile, the onset potential for front-side are also improved compared to back-side illumination. The present work demonstrates an exploration for the possible mechanism of front-side and back-side illumination effect via surface modification treatment for the improvement of PEC water splitting application.

Abstract:Photocatalytic split water attracts tremendous research interest because of its outstanding advantages in generating clean energy. Therefore, this work reports the synthesis of Pt/TiO 2 @CdS/Co 3 O 4 hollow core–shell nanocomposites using a hard template method. The resulting material was then used for photo-induced spontaneous water splitting. The rationally designed hollow core–shell structure of this material not only enhanced the light collection capacity but also improved the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers owing to its TiO 2 /CdS heterojunction. The presence of the Pt and Co 3 O 4 catalysts in our novel material resulted in 63.2 and 29.7 μ mol/g of H 2 and O 2 yields, respectively. Our work provides insights into conversion efficiency improvements during visible light-assisted catalytic water splitting.

Abstract:Band engineering is employed thoroughly and targets technologically scalable photoanodes for solar water splitting applications. Complex and costly recipes are necessary, often for average performances. Here we report simple photoanode growth and thermal annealing, with effective band engineering results. By comparing Ti-doped hematite photoanodes annealed under Nitrogen to photoanodes annealed in air, we found strongly enhanced photocurrent, of more than 200 % in the first case. Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and synchrotron X-rays spectromicroscopies we demonstrate that oxidized surface states and increased density of charge carriers are responsible for the enhanced photoelectrochemical activity. Surface states are found to be related to the formation of pseudo-brookite clusters by surface Ti segregation. Spectro-ptychography is used for the first time at Ti L3 absorption edge to isolate Ti chemical coordination arising from pseudo-brookite clusters contribution. Correlated with electron microscopy investigation and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, the synchrotron spectromicroscopy data prove unambiguously the origin of the better photoelectrochemical activity of N2- annealed Ti-doped hematite nanorods. Finally, we present here a handy and cheap surface engineering method, beyond the known oxygen vacancy doping, allowing a net gain in the photoelectrochemical activity for the hematite-based photoanodes.

Abstract:Single-atomic catalysts (SACs) have been emerging as one of potential candidates in catalysts, owing to their unique merits with extremely high specific surface area as well as remarkably exposed active sites. Herein, we develop an in-situ gas-phase cation exchange strategy for engineering single-atomic Co on the surface of TiO2 photoanode toward solar water splitting. It is verified that the atomically-dispersed Co with Co-O coordination could optimize the surface electronic structures, enhance the light absorption, promote the photoinduced charge transfer, lower the reaction barrier and accelerate the reaction kinetics, which consequently enable the overall improved photoelectrochemical (PEC) behaviors for photoanodes. As a proof of concept, the as-constructed TiO2-based photoanodes deliver robust stability up to 100 h and a photocurrent density up to 1.47 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which are superior to those of pristine TiO2, representing their significance for potential applications.
