Abstract:Silicoaluminophosphate SAPO-34 zeotypes have been hydrothermally synthesized by using a tailor-designed zwitterionic amino acid of 3-hydroxy-4-triethylaminobutyric acid (Et-LC). The unnatural zwitterionic amino acid possessing both triethyl ammonium cationic moiety and anionic carboxylate group promoted SAPO-34 crystallization, allowed to decrease acidity of the as-obtained SAPO-34 catalysts, and slightly generated meso-pores without affecting the microporosity. While natural amino acids either induced polymorphism due to the amino or ammonium moiety incommensurate with the chabazite unit, or showed inability to create mesopores because of the non-deprotonated carboxylic group, thus failing to meet the stringent SAPO-34 synthetic requirements of neutral pH, high temperature and appropriate templates. The Et-LC mediated SAPO-34 crystals were demonstrated to be much more effective in catalyzing the methanol to olefin (MTO) reactions with lifetime improved to 533 min, the ethylene plus propylene selectivity preserved at 81%, and coke content decreased to 8%, in comparison to those of the conventional microporous SAPO-34 zeolite of 389 min, 81%, and 17.5%.

Abstract:The inherent mass transport limitations and undesired acidity of silicoaluminophosphate SAPO-34 catalysts are two key factors that result in a fast deactivation rate in the methanol-to-olefin (MTO) reaction. Herein, we demonstrate that SAPO-34 with hierarchical pore architecture and different silicon contents can be rationally synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of homogeneous amorphous silicoaluminophosphate precursors in the absence of mesopore templates and fluoride. It reveals that the hierarchical architecture is formed by in situ alkaline TEAOH etching of framework atoms. The silicon content (acidity) of the products can be facilely tuned in wide range. 29Si MAS NMR spectra reveal silicon mainly exists in the form of Si(4Al) in low-silica SAPO-34 catalysts free from silica islands. The hierarchical SAPO-34 catalyst with a moderate silicon content (nSi/n(Si + Al + P) = 0.048) and small particle size (265 +/- 94 nm) exhibits a prolonged catalytic lifetime as well as a higher selectivity in MTO reaction, attributing to the synergetic effect of a fast diffusion speed and an appropriate acidic density.

Abstract:Synergic regulation of microstructure, morphology and acidity of SAPO-34 molecular sieve is crucial to enhance its catalytic performance for methanol to olefins (MTO) reaction. Herein, a commercial oxygen-containing organosilane 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (AC-230) was developed as a new mesoporogen to synthesize pure SAPO-34 nanocrystallites together with diisopropylamine and seeds. According to the conditional experiments and systematic characterizations, it was disclosed that AC-230 not only changed the morphology and particle size of the SAPO-34 crystals but also affected its compositions and acidic properties. The addition of seed was indispensable to fasten the crystallization rate and hence assure the crystal growth inhibition function of AC-230. Thanks to the formed shortened diffusion pathway, moderate acid sites and pure CHA structure of the nanosized SAPO-34 product, the catalyst demonstrates excellent catalytic performance with a longer lifetime (395 min) and higher ethylene plus propylene selectivity (82.88%) in comparison to its conventional analogs (259 min and 80.63%).

Abstract:Low-silicon SAPO-34 was rapidly synthesized with the assistance of citric acid using inexpensive triethylamine as a template. The effects of citric acid on the crystal structure, morphology, and acidity were investigated using XRD, SEM, FT-IR as well as ICP characterization methods. The results show that citric acid promotes the growth of SAPO-34, shortens the crystallization time and improves the yield of solids. Furthermore, citric acid facilitates the synthesis of low-silicon SAPO-34, which exhibits improved MTO catalytic performance. Compared with conventional SAPO-34, low-silicon SAPO-34 generated higher selectivity of ethylene and propylene.

Abstract:AbstractThe present study focuses on synthesis of SAPO-34 zeolite membrane on the surface of CuO–ZnO–Al2O3 (CZA) catalyst particles to form CZA@SAPO-34 core@shell structured catalyst. In contrast to the traditional support of porous alumina, CZA catalyst particles have a relatively brittle surface, which leads to a big challenge to coat SAPO-34 zeolite membrane on their surface. Moreover, the hydrothermal synthesis of SAPO-34 zeolite membrane is carried out under weakly alkaline condition at 200 °C for hours, which causes part of the surface of CZA to be fragmented. To overcome these shortcomings, the intermediate layer of alumina is introduced to the surface of the CZA particles and acts as a barrier to the high-temperature hydrothermal and alkaline condition. It also takes as a transition to enhance SAPO-34 zeolite seeds adherence to the surface of CZA particles. With the help of an alumina layer, a continuous and dense zeolite membrane has been obtained on the surface of CZA particles. The prepared core@shell structured catalyst has better selectivity in CO hydrogenation for producing light hydrocarbons because of the synergetic effects between the membrane and core catalyst.

Abstract:SAPO-34 crystallites with 160–550nm were synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal crystallization and characterized by XRD, SEM, XRF, low-temperature N2 adsorption and NH3-TPD. The H2O2 aqueous solution was used to remove template. The size effects of SAPO-34 crystallites on its catalytic performance (the catalytic activity, lifetime and coking formation) were investigated for the conversion of methanol to olefins (MTO). Comparing with SAPO-34 sample (I) prepared by traditional one-step hydrothermal crystallization, the sample (II) prepared by a two-step hydrothermal crystallization possesses the similar CHA structure, cubic-like rhombohedra morphology, chemical composition and Si environment as sample (I); however, the sample (II) has smaller crystallite (160nm), larger surface area (648m2/g) and more acid sites than the sample (I) (1100nm, 498m2/g). For the MTO reaction, the olefins selectivity and lifetime strongly depend on the crystallite sizes of SAPO-34 catalyst, and the smaller the crystallite sizes of SAPO-34 and the better its catalytic performance is. Using the catalyst (II), the olefins selectivity and lifetime in single run can reach more than 94.9% and 10h, respectively. Therefore, this two-step hydrothermal crystallization developed here offers a promising strategy to control the crystallite size of SAPO-34, and SAPO-34 with small crystallite size is an excellent candidate of catalyst for MTO process.

Abstract:SAPO-34 with low silica content and good mass transfer property is highly desired catalytic material for syngas-to-olefins and methanol-to-olefins (MTO) reactions. However, the synthesis of low-silica SAPO-34 by common low-cost template remains a challenge as the product is always bothered by impurity contamination or CHA / AEI intergrowth. Here, a metal assistance (Me = Zn, Mg, Co, Mn) and in situ etching strategy was developed to allow the construction of hollow low-silica SAPO-34, which exhibited long catalytic lifespan and ultra-high ethylene plus propylene selectivity (86.9 wt%) in MTO reaction. The crystallization process was studied by monitoring the evolution of a Zn-containing low-silica gel with triethylamine (TEA) as the template. It was revealed that Zn atoms were more active than Si atoms to participate in the nucleation of ZnAPSO-34, which effectively inhibited the CHA / AEI intergrowth. ZnAPSO-34@SAPO-34 was obtained with further crystallization. The selective etching of Zn-containing components occurred in subsequent cooling stage owing to inhomogeneous distribution of framework T atoms, leading to the hollow low-silica SAPO (Si/(Si + Al + P) ≈ 0.07 in mole) with pure CHA phase. This work provides a facile approach for the synergic regulation of crystal phase, composition and morphology of SAPO materials.

Abstract:A series of SAPO-34 materials were synthesized hydrothermally in the presence of mixed templating agent (named TEDE) of tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) and diethylamine (DEA). The effects of template amount, SiO2/Al2O3 and P2O5/Al2O3 molar ratios and the crystallization temperature on the structure and acidity were studied by XRD, nitrogen adsorption and NH3-TPD techniques. The results showed that SAPO-34 and SAPO-5 are competing phases at low template concentration. Pure SAPO-34 with high crystallinity and large BET surface area were obtained at a TEDE/Al2O3 ratio of 2.0. Varying the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio at 0.1~1.0 did not change the purity of SAPO-34, but affected its crystallinity and acidity. An optimal synthesis procedure giving a homogeneous SAPO-34 framework with high crystallinity, consists of heating a gel of composition Al2O3:P2O5:0.6SiO2:1.0TEAOH:1.0DEA:53H2O at 100 °C for 24h firstly and 200 °C for 72h later. Such a reproducible procedure gave rise to an acidic catalyst active in the MTO reactions with 100% methanol conversion, 85.2% ethylene and propylene selectivity and a longest lifetime.

Abstract:SAPO-34 catalysts with high selectivity for light olefins were first synthesized via the introduction of phosphomolybdic acid (HPMo) and AlPO 4 -5 zeolite into the initial gel. The physical and chemical characteristics of the synthesized catalysts were determined by a series of techniques and the catalytic performance of the modified composite zeolites for the methanol-to-olefin (MTO) reaction was investigated. The results indicated that HPMo-modified SAPO-34 was featured with more Brønsted acid sites, more mesopores, and a smaller crystal size, thereby demonstrating superior catalytic performance. The further combination with AlPO 4 -5 (16.7 wt%) prolonged the lifetime of the HPMo-modified SAPO-34, which is thought in this paper related to its 12-ring straight channel (0.7-0.8 nm) and the absence of any Brønsted acid sites. The MTO tests showed that the light olefins selectivity for the modified composite zeolites reached 95.1%, while the catalyst lifetime remained at 445 min.

Abstract:SAPO‐34 is an important member in the family of zeolites, which shows excellent catalytic activity in MTO reaction, but suffers from the diffusion bottleneck. To overcome the diffusion problem, porogen was added to generate meso/macro pores in SAPO‐34 zeolite. In this work, amphipathic molecules were designed as CSDA to synthesize a tri‐level hierarchically porous SAPO‐34, and the introduction of CSDA could promote the Si atoms incorporating into the AlPO4 framework, change the morphology of particles and decrease the acidity of prepared SAPO‐34 zeolite. The prepared SAPO‐34 catalyst exhibits higher selectivity of C2H4 and C3H6 in the MTO reaction than the conventional SAPO‐34 zeolite. The morphology and the microstructure of the prepared samples vary with the carbon chain of the amphipathic molecules due to the matching between amphipathic molecules and topological structure of CHA.
A green approach to improve the yield of SAPO-34 crystal as well as its methanol-to-olefin performance

Abstract:Nowadays, large amounts of aluminosilicophosphate SAPO-34 zeolite are produced in industrials annually. Here, a green strategy is developed to increase SAPO-34 crystal's yield and its catalytic performance in methanol-to-olefin (MTO) reaction. Tuning the pH value of mother liquor from alkaline to acid by rationally decreasing the environmentally unfriendly organic amine to only 57%, surprisingly the yield of SAPO-34 zeolite increases from 31% to 78%; the weak acid environment at the initial stage generates more AlPO4 precursors, which then are converted into the zeolite framework. For the first time, we found that the yield and crystallinity of the SAPO-34 crystal are positively correlated with the pH difference between gels before and after crystallization. Furthermore, the sample with the largest pH difference of about 2, showing hierarchical pore structure and mild acidity, presents excellent MTO performance: a longer lifetime of 381 min and a higher selectivity for ethylene plus propylene of 84.91%, compared to the conventional microporous sample of 131 min and 78.89%. This green approach uses less environmentally detrimental amine but enhances the yield of zeolite, in favor of the completion of the world's carbon neutrality.

Methanol Conversion on SAPO-34 Catalysts Synthesized by Tri-templates

Abstract:The effect of different combinations of a new tri-templating agent TEAOH/DEA/TEA, namely tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide (TEAOH)/diethylamine (DEA)/triethylamine (TEA), on the catalytic performance of SAPO-34 was investigated in MTO conversion. It was found that SAPO-34 and SAPO-5 are competing phases at TEA concentrations higher than 40 %. Pure SAPO-34 with high crystallinity, large BET surface area and small crystal size (0.8~1.4μm) was obtained at a low TEA concentrations. The combination of TEAOH/DEA/TEA strongly governed the acidity of crystals. TEAOH:DEA:TEA=0.67:0.67:0.67 gave an economical catalyst active in MTO reaction with 100 methanol conversion, 89.39 ethylene and propylene selectivity, a longest lifetime and a high coke capability of 24.2 wt %.

Abstract:AbstractIntroduce meso/macro‐pore to the crystal of SAPO‐34 is an efficient way to overcome its inherent diffusion resistance. Porogen, formation hierarchical structure by inhibiting the growth of the crystals, would increase the costs of SAPO‐34 and is usually not friendly to environment. In this work, an ingrowth route to synthesize hierarchical SAPO‐34 is developed by secondary silica addition via hydrothermal method. Hierarchical porous SAPO‐34 was synthesized without adding any pore‐generating agent. Secondary silica addition put off the Si and P transferring from the mother liquid to gel phase, leading to the chemical composition of surface first meeting to the crystallization conditions. Then the crystallization started from the surface to the inside of the amorphous particles. The hierarchical SAPO‐34 showed numerous meso/macro pore structure and weaker acid strength. So the hierarchical SAPO‐34 showed better catalytic activity than the conventional SAPO‐34 in MTO reaction.
In Situ Synthesis of SAPO-34 Grown Onto Fully Calcined Kaolin Microspheres and Its Catalytic Properties for the MTO Reaction

Abstract:Rapid deactivation and short lifetime are challenges for SAPO-34 catalysts for the reaction of methanol to olefins (MTO). To overcome these drawbacks, SAPO-34 on fully calcined kaolin microspheres (CKMs) was synthesized in situ by a hydrothermal method with tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) and triethylamine (TEA) as templates. To facilitate the growth of SAPO-34, the CKMs were first pretreated by 2-14 wt % NaOH aqueous solution, and the effects of the NaOH concentration on the physicochemical properties of CKMs and the SAPO-34/kaolin microspheres (SCKMs) were characterized by means of XRD, XPS, SEM, low-temperature N-2 adsorption, and NH3-TPD. The results showed that NaOH pretreatment has obvious effects on the chemical compositions and morphologies of the CKMs and, thus, the physicochemical properties of the SAPO-34 grown on them. Moreover, the textural and catalytic properties of the SCKMs were found to depend strongly on the concentration of NaOH solution, and the optimal NaOH concentration was determined to be 4 wt %. For the MTO reaction catalyzed by the prepared SCKM catalyst, 100% methanol conversion, 89.8% light olefins selectivity, and a 964-min lifetime (the reaction time during which the yield of C-2-C-4 olefins exceeded 70%) were obtained at 450 degrees C, which are much better than the values for free SAPO-34 and SAPO-34 supported on metakaolin microspheres.

Abstract:A strategy was devised for the synthesis of SAPO-34, which involved a concentrated gel system-assisted two-step crystallization method. This strategy effectively controlled the size and morphology of SAPO-34. The successful synthesis of SAPO-34 crystals with micron-scale cubic morphology and nano-scale sheets were achieved using triethylamine as a low-cost template. The paper thoroughly examined the growth evolution that occurs during the crystallization process, and it delved into the factors such as gel concentration and crystallization conditions in the synthesis. Furthermore, potential theories regarding nucleation and growth mechanisms were suggested. A systematic study was conducted to examine how the morphology and acidity of SAPO-34 zeolites impact their catalytic performance. The results confirmed that the SAPO-34 with low silicon content and lamellar structure was successfully synthesized through a two-step crystallization within a gel system of H 2 O/Al 2 O 3 = 30, with a thickness of approximately 50–300 nm. SAPO-34 nanosheets demonstrated a substantial enhancement in catalytic performance, with a catalytic life of 370 min and an 84.1% selectivity towards light olefins.

Abstract:In order to enhance the catalytic performance of SAPO-34 for the reaction of methanol to olefins (MTO), a mixture template of triethylamine (TEA) and tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) was used to synthesize SAPO-34. The effects of the composition of the mixed template on the chemical composition, morphology and surface acidity of SAPO-34 were characterized by XRD, SEM, XRF, Si MAS NMR and NH3-TPD techniques. The catalytic performance of prepared SAPO-34 was investigated in a fixed-bed reactor at 450°C for the MTO reaction. The results show that the chemical composition, morphology, crystal size and Si incorporation of SAPO-34 are affected greatly by the molar ratio of TEAOH/TEA. For the MTO reaction, all catalysts prepared show similar methanol conversion and product distribution, but their olefins selectivity and lifetime are greatly dependent on the ratio of TEAOH/TEA in the synthesis solution. Comparing with the SAPO-34 synthesized with single template, SAPO-34 synthesized with TEAOH/TEA=0.1 possesses larger surface area, mild acidity and small crystal size and exhibits higher selectivity to light olefins (C2–C4), longer lifetime and lower carbon deposition rate.

Abstract:Nanosheet-liked mesoporous SAPO-34 zeolites were synthesized by a facile surfactant-assisted hydrothermal synthesis method. Compositions, morphology, acidities, chemical environment and texture properties of SAPO-34 zeolites synthesized were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, AFM, NH 3 -TPD, N 2 adsorption–desorption, XPS, and TG measurements. The morphology and the surface acid density of SAPO-34 zeolite can be controlled by adding of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and using triethanolamine (TEA) as the template. The nanosheet-liked mesoporous SAPO-34 zeolites have lower amount of strong acid strongth with the thickness of about 3.0 nm. The catalysis performance for methanol-to-olefin (MTO) over nanosheet-like SAPO-34 zeolites was systematically studied. Under the condition of temperature at 400 °C, feeding WHSV of 2.0 h −1 , catalyst mass of 0.2 g and at atmospheric pressure, the methanol conversion is nearly 100% and the light olefins selectivity is 97.35%. As nanosheet-like SAPO-34 zeolites shorten the diffusion path and enhance the mass flow to and away from the catalytic centers, the catalyst lifetime is more than 420 min.
