Abstract:Phase-change materials (PCMs) can overcome the low energy density and utilization efficiency of solar energy. However, the low thermal conductivity of PCMs significantly affects the thermal efficiency of solar devices; thus, improving the thermal conductivity of PCMs has been the focus of many recent studies. In this study, copper metal foam (CMF) composite PCMs were prepared using paraffin wax and highpore-density CMF. The effect of the CMF proportion on heat transfer enhancement in the PCM melting process was analyzed using experimental equipment for heat storage visualization. Comprehensive heat transfer coefficients of CMF composite PCMs were obtained. The experimental results showed that as the CMF proportion increased from 0 to 2.15%, the melting time of the CMF composite PCMs and their heat storage capacity first increased and then decreased, whereas the heat storage rate and comprehensive heat transfer coefficient first decreased and then increased. The minimum temperature gradient of 8.09 K was reached when the CMF proportion was 2.15%. More importantly, as the proportion of CMF increased from 0.43 to 2.15%, the proportion of natural convection decreased from 87.90 to 17.69%, and natural convection was the major heat transfer mechanism in the melting process of composite PCMs with a low CMF proportion. The composite PCMs with a CMF proportion of 0.86% has the best heat storage performance when the heat storage capacity and heat storage rate were both considered. (c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In this study, yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was firstly used as a nucleating agent and copper foam as the matrix to simultaneously reduce the supercooling degree and improve the thermal conductivity of sodium acetate trihydrate (SAT). The SAT/copper foam/YSZ composite phase change material (PCM) was prepared by ball milling and melting impregnation method. The influences of content of YSZ on supercooling degree of SAT and porosity of copper foam on thermal conductivity of SAT were studied experimentally. The step-cooling curve method results indicated that the supercooling of SAT can be eliminated by 0.8 mass% YSZ without any chemical interaction between SAT and YSZ. The thermal conductivity test and heat transfer test results of SAT/copper foam/YSZ composite PCM indicated that copper foam increases the thermal conductivity of SAT. The thermal conductivity of SAT/copper foam/YSZ composite PCM was 5.9, 6.9 and 9.4 times as that of pure SAT when the porosity of copper foam was 8 ppi, 15 ppi and 40 ppi. Moreover, the volume energy storage density of SAT/copper foam/YSZ composite PCMs was calculated as 448.6–473.0 MJ m−3, which was 2.09–2.20 times as that of water.

Abstract:Sodium acetate trihydrate (CH3COONa·3H2O, SAT), as the medium-low temperature phase change material (PCM), has been broadly utilized in thermal energy storage system. The specific objective of this study was to develop a new SAT-based composite PCM (CPCM) in order to restrain the supercooling and phase segregation of pure SAT. In this dissertation, SAT-CN/Nano-Cu was synthesized by adding carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), sodium chloride (NaCl) and Nano-copper (Nano-Cu). The experimental results manifest that CMC is resultful to constrain phase separation of pure SAT. Supercooling degree of pure SAT is reduced from 30°C to less than 5°C by the addition of varying NaCl content. The Nano-Cu was furnished to further prevent the supercooling phenomenon of CPCM as well as intensify the heat transfer characteristics of pure SAT. Thermal properties containing thermal conductivity, latent heat and specific heat capacity were systematically analyzed using DSC and thermal properties analyzer. The analysis results demonstrate that a satisfactory thermal conductivity, high latent heat and inclusive of an appropriate specific heat capacity are achieved by the SAT-CN/Nano-Cu. In short, this work reported optimum CPCM consisted of SAT, 3 wt% CMC, 4 wt% NaCl and 0.8 wt% Nano-Cu that possesses superior phase change performance. Additionally, admirable thermal stability is retained by the CPCM.

Abstract:Abstract Salt hydrates, like the sodium acetate trihydrate (SAT), possess a remarkable ability to store copious amounts of thermal energy, thanks to their ingenious utilization of a high latent heat of fusion. This unique property makes them a compelling choice for various energy storage applications. In this study, aluminum, and copper foams with pore sizes of 40, 80, and 110 pores per inch (PPI) coated with disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate were prepared and their effects on the SAT solidification temperature, latent heat of fusion, and thermal conductivity were investigated. The samples thermal conductivity was measured using the guarded heat flow method. Thermal properties including latent heat of fusion and supercooling were measured using the T-History method. The results showed that the metal foam matrix is an effective method of enhancing the thermal conductivity of SAT while occupying a small volume of the composite. The copper foam with a PPI of 80 was able to increase the effective thermal conductivity to 2.62 W/m.K, an increase of 388.15% compared to pure SAT while occupying approximately 6.5% of the composite volume. The T-History results showed a solidification temperature of 57.52 °C along with a super cooling of 3.28 °C for the same sample set. Further, it was found that copper samples significantly outperformed the aluminum ones despite the higher porosity.

Abstract:Myristyl alcohol (MA)/metal foam composite phase change materials (CPCMs) were fabricated by vacuum melting infiltration. MA was used as the phase change material (PCM) and the metal foam was used as skeleton. Nickel foam and copper foam were both employed for comparison. Furthermore, effects of pore size of metal foam on thermal performances were analyzed. Thermal properties, including differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) test results and thermogravimetry analyzer results (TGA) were investigated and recorded. Compared with latent heat of pure MA, the latent heat of CPCMs for the melting process decreased by 3–29%. TGA results showed that the composites have good thermal stability. Fourier transformation infrared spectroscope (FT–IR) and X–ray diffractometer (XRD) were used to determine chemical and crystalloid structure of the composites, respectively. Microstructures of the composites were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the results indicated that the PCM was well absorbed by the metal foam. Thermal conductivity of the composites was measured by thermal conductivity meter (TCM), and the outcome proved that MA/metal foam composites have an improved thermal conductivity.
Design of Diatomite-Based Hydrated Salt Composites with Low Supercooling Degree and Enhanced Heat Transfer for Thermal Energy Storage

Abstract:In this work, diatomite (DM) was calcined at 400°C to obtain the pure surface and pores (DM‐1); then, the three kinds of shape‐stable composite phase change materials (ss‐CPCMs) of CaCl2·6H2O (CCH)/DM‐1, CH3COONa·3H2O (SAT)/DM‐1, and Na2SO4·10H2O (SSD)/DM‐1 were prepared by impregnation method. The hydrated salts were uniformly adsorbed on the surfaces and into the pores of DM‐1 by capillary action and surface tension. The addition of nucleating agent effectively reduced the supercooling degrees of hydrated salts, and the heterogeneous nucleation mechanism was employed to explain the supercooling suppression. The results showed that the supercooling degrees of the three hydrated salt ss‐CPCMs with optimal nucleating agent were less than or equal to 0.6°C. Moreover, the thermal conductivities of ss‐CPCMs were significantly improved by adding graphite, and the addition of 10 wt% graphite could increase the thermal conductivity of hydrated salt ss‐CPCMs by at least 70%. The package capacity of CCH, SAT, and SSD in three ss‐CPCMs with appropriate contents of nucleating agent and graphite was 58.1, 56.1, and 56.3 wt%, respectively. The DSC results showed that the phase change temperatures of the three ss‐CPCMs were approximately 28.8 to 57.8°C, and the latent heat was approximately 108.7 to 149.4 J/g. The XRD and FT‐IR results exhibited that the three ss‐CPCMs indicated understanding chemical compatibility. In addition, the results of 200 melt‐solidification cycles demonstrated that the ss‐CPCMs had excellent thermal cycle reliability. Thus, the hydrated salt/DM‐1 ss‐CPCMs showed great potential as heat storage materials for various heat storage applications.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) are promising options of thermal energy storage mediums. However, their low thermal conductivity and leakage issues remain the setback and limits the practical applications. In this work, Palmitic acid (PA)/copper foam (CF) composite PCMs have been prepared using the melting-vacuum impregnation method, with PA serving as the phase change material (PCM) and CF as the supporting material. The surface of CF with pore sizes of 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 PPI (pores per inch) has been chemically modified with hydrochloric acid to increase the surface roughness of CF, strengthening the adsorption capacity of CF skeleton structure for PCM. The melting temperature and the latent heat of PA/CF composite PCMs were measured by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) to evaluate the heat storage performance. The charging/discharging properties of the PA/CF composite PCMs have been experimentally investigated. At the same time, the solidification process of PA/CF composite PCMs was tested and analysed using infrared imaging technology. The introduction of CF to form composite PCM not only improves greatly the thermal conductivity of PCM but also prevents the leakage. The thermal conductivities of PA/CF composites have obtained a significant enhancement. The composite PCM based on 15 PPI CF has the highest thermal conductivity of 5.112 W/(m∙K), which is more than 31 times higher than that of pure PA. The 15 PPI sample melts at 61.4 °C with a latent heat of 174.788 kJ/kg and possesses the fastest charging/discharging rate. Besides, the prepared samples behave uniform temperature distribution and perfect shape-stabilization when cooled. The prepared samples have the high thermal conductivity and fast thermal response rate, and could play a crucial role in the field of heat storage and thermal management of electronic devices.

Abstract:In this study,metal-based composite phase change material was prepared with the binary carbonate eutectic salts (Li2CO3-K2CO3) as high temperature phase change material and metal foam as the skeleton.The preparation conditions such as burying method of metal foam in the salt were discussed and optimized.Thermal energy storage density and thermal conductivity were calculated and measured respectively.Furthermore,effects of cell density and porosity of the metal foam on the performance of composite phase change material were analyzed.The results show that the best burying method for 40 PPI metal foam is the middle burying and for 35 PPI metal foam is the bottom burying.The thermal conductivity of the binary carbonate eutectic salts can be improved by 3 to 4 times,and the thermal energy storage density can still remain at relatively high level by using metal foam with a porosity of about 95％.

Abstract:Due to its large latent heat and high energy storage capacity, paraffin as one of the phase change materials (PCMs) has been widely applied in many energy-related applications in recent years. The current applications of paraffin, however, are limited by the low thermal conductivity and the leakage problem. To address these issues, we designed and fabricated form-stable composite PCMs by impregnating organic paraffin within graphite-coated copper foams. The graphite-coated copper foam was prepared by sintering multilayer copper meshes, and graphite nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of the porous copper foam. Graphite nanoparticles could directly absorb and convert solar energy into thermal energy, and the converted thermal energy was stored in the paraffin PCMs through phase change heat transfer. The graphite-coated copper foam not only effectively enhanced the thermal conductivity of paraffin PCMs, but also its porous structure and superhydrophobic surface prevented the paraffin leakage during the charging process. The experimental results showed that the composite PCMs had a thermal conductivity of 2.97 W/(m·K), and no leakage occurred during the charging and discharging process. Finally, we demonstrated the composite PCMs can be readily integrated with solar thermoelectric systems to serve as the energy sources for generating electricity by using abundant clean solar-thermal energy.

Abstract:This work presented experimental investigations on the thermal energy storage performance of the shell and tube unit with composite phase change materials (PCM). A cylindrical heat storage tank filled with open-cell copper foam was proposed and its melting process characteristics were studied. A designed test system was established to record the PCM real-time temperature data. The results showed that, compared with traditional smooth-tube phase-change heat exchangers, the composite PCM unit accelerated the bottom paraffin melting. The temperature disparity among different height reduced, which resulted in better internal temperature uniformity. Due to the expanded heat transfer area, improved heat transfer coefficient and weakened natural convection, the bottom phase-change materials in the composite-PCM heat-storage unit melt faster.

Abstract:This study presented an experimental investigation on solidification behavior of fluid saturated in highly porous open-cell copper foams. Particular attention has been made on the effect of pore parameters (pore density and porosity) on the solidification behavior. A purposely-designed apparatus was built for experimental observations. Results showed that the copper foam had a great effect on solidification and the full solidification time can be saved up to 50%, especially preventing the decrease in solidification rate during the later stage of phase change. The smaller the porosity is, the faster the solidification rate will be. Pore density was found to have little influence upon the solidification rate. In addition, the local natural convection does exist but it has a slight effect on solidification, leading to the slant of the solid-liquid interface.

Abstract:Regardless of the high latent heat of organic phase change materials (PCMs) for thermal energy storage, their intrinsically low thermal conductivity has constrained their wide application. In order to improve the thermal conductivity of paraffin PCM, porous copper foams as supporting frameworks are fabricated by a simple solution combustion synthesis (SCS), using copper nitrate as oxidizer and starch as fuel. The SCS is conducted under inert atmosphere and the efficient exothermic reaction occurs at around 100 °C. At an optimal oxidant-fuel condition of 4.43 g copper nitrate to 2 g starch, a good porous copper scaffold is prepared, which is further shaped and sintered to form robust copper foams. Paraffin is infiltrated into the copper foams to form PCM composites and the thermophysical properties are analyzed. Due to the continuous copper skeleton as heat transfer path, the thermal conductivity of the composite is improved to 3.29 W m-1 K-1 from 0.25 W m-1 K-1 of pure paraffin. The enhanced heat transfer properties of PCM composites as-supported by the facilely SCS-derived copper foams can reinforce the application in solar thermal harvesting and thermal management.

Abstract:Molten salts have been widely used as energy storage materials in medium- and high-temperature thermal energy storage. However, pure salt commonly suffers from low thermal conductivity and many conventional methods of heat transfer enhancement do not apply due to the serious corrosion and the extremely high temperature. In the current study, the open-cell SiC ceramic foam was integrated with solar salt (60wt% NaNO3 + 40wt% KNO3) to enhance the heat transfer of salt and avoid severe corrosion is-sues. A visualised experiment was for the first time conducted to investigate the melting phase change heat transfer in the ceramic foam/molten salt composite phase change material (CPCM). A representative elementary volume (REV)-scale simulation was simultaneously performed and the computational results were compared with experimental data. It is found that the conduction-friendly ceramic skeleton remark-ably enhances the heat transfer in molten salt, especially in the region far away from the heat source. The spatial temperature difference across the composite is decreased in both horizontal and vertical directions and the local superheating is mitigated. The enhancement of heat conduction is greater than the suppression of natural convection; as a result, the melting rate of the CPCM is increased by 41.3%. This study provides crucial benchmark data of phase change heat transfer for medium-temperature thermal energy storage and paves the way for system design and optimization. (C) 2022 The Author(s). Improving the Heat Transfer of Phase Change Composites for Thermal Energy Storage by Adding Copper: Preparation and Thermal Properties

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs), as an effective thermal energy storage technology, provide a viable approach to harness solar heat, a green energy source, and optimize energy consumption in buildings. However, the obstacle preventing widespread practical use of PCM is its poor performance in terms of heat transfer and shape stabilization. This article focuses on the application of the shape stabilization method. To improve the thermal conductivity of organic PCMs (hexadecane), copper microparticles are added to form phase change composites (PCC). This process allows an enhanced PCM (75 wt%) that distributes effective thermal storage capabilities while maintaining low cost. SEM, FTIR, ATG, infrared thermography (IRT), and DSC were used to characterize the composites' micromorphology, chemical composition, thermal degradation stability, and thermal energy storage capabilities. DSC results showed that a proportion of 75 wt% phase change material with 15 wt% Cu had excellent thermal stability and high energy storage density per unit mass. In light of its high latent heat storage capacity of 201.32 J/g as well as its ability to prevent Hexadecane exudation, PCC ensures higher thermal conductivity and shape stability during phase transition than ordinary PCM. The incorporation of Cu to paraffin causes delay in PCM phase transformation, leading it to respond to rapid charging and discharging rates and, consequentially, to challenges in temperature control, as shown by IRT. The new PCCs had favorable thermal stability below 100 °C, which was advantageous for practical application for thermal energy storage and management, and notably for solar thermal energy storage.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCM) have high latent heat of fusion with controllable temperature stability and have been used in thermal management for high power electronic device working in intermittent condition. Due to low thermal conductivity of PCM, high porosity open-cell metal foams can be embedded in the PCM to improve the thermal conductivity. In this paper, a hybrid heat sink with hollow substrate in which cooper metal foams filled with paraffin wax are sintered inside the hollow space is proposed. The temperature variations of heater surface are tested experimentally. The influence of metal foam porosity, pore diameter and PCM thermal property on total thermal resistance is experimentally studied.

Abstract:The energy transport inside a phase change material (PCM) based thermal energy storage system using metal foam as an enhancement technique is investigated numerically. The paraffin is used as the PCM and water as the heat transfer fluid (HTF). The transient heat transfer during the charging and discharging processes is solved, based on the volume averaged conservation equations. The flow in PCM/foam and HTF/foam composites is modelled by the Forchheimer-extended Darcy equation, while the two-temperature model is employed to account for the local thermal non-equilibrium effect between the foam matrix and fluid phase. The results show that the overall performance is greatly improved by inserting metal foam in both HTF and PCM sides. A nearly 84.9% decrease in the time needed for the total process is found compared with the case of pure PCM, and 40% compared with the case of metal foam insert only in the PCM side. Foam porosity and HTF inlet temperature greatly affect the dynamic heat storage/release process.

Abstract:The mechanisms responsible for the effect of metal foam, having a varying degree of porosity, on the phase change process in a phase change material (PCM) are not clearly understood. In this work, the pore-scale heat storage performance of the graded metal foams saturated with paraffin has been investigated using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The results demonstrate that the metal foam with a graded porosity accelerates the heat storage of PCM. In terms of the gradient dimension of the metal foam, the full melting time of the negative model 2 has been observed to be shortened by 2.6% as compared to the uniform model 1 and reduced by 15.5% as compared to the positive model 3. This is because the smaller the porosity of metal foam is, the faster the melting conducts. For the negative model, the relatively small porosity region is closer to the heat source than the large porosity region, which makes the heat transfer enhancement effect more evident than the weakening effect. Meanwhile, the full melting time shows an initial increasing trend, followed by a decrease for an increase in the porosity gradient difference. The optimal gradient difference is found to be -0.12 at the average porosity of 0.86 in this study.

Abstract:The inorganic phase change material (PCM) is a promising energy storage material in the construction field because of their characteristics, such as high latent heat, low price and nonflammability. However, from the perspective of construction engineering applications, conventional inorganic phase change materials have some inherent performance defects, such as high phase change temperature, phase separation and leakage. To overcome these performance deficiencies, a novel eutectic hydrated salt/polymer hydrogel composite form-stable phase change material (HP-FSPCM) suitable for building thermal storage was developed, which used Na2SO4·10H2O–Na2CO3·10H2O eutectic salt (SCES) as PCM, sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) as thickener and packaging material, borax as nucleating agent and flake graphite as thermal conductivity enhancer. The phase change temperature and crystal structure characteristics of SCES were analyzed by means of step cooling curve method and X-ray diffraction technique (XRD). The microstructure and thermal properties of HP-FSPCM were tested and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and transient planar thermal conductivity instrument. The test results showed that the cross-linked network formed by PAAS can eliminate the phase separation and leakage of SCES, and the latent heat value, melting temperature and crystallization temperature of HP-FSPCM were 165.5 J/g, 22.4 °C and 13.8 °C, respectively. The thermal cycle reliability of HP-FSPCM was tested, the latent heat loss of HP-FSPCM was only 2.2% after 300 thermal cycles.

Abstract:Of the composite PCMs that regulate temperature in thermal energy storage, metal foam is a good candidate because of its high conductivity. This paper aims to characterize the behavior of composite PCMs through the dual experimental and numerical approach. The approach takes into consideration the natural convection of PCMs and the porosity character of metal foams which is constructed by quartet structure generation set (QSGS) method. The model uses the two-dimensional lattice Boltzmann method based on the enthalpy method. The effects of foam porosity and characterized numbers on the heat transfer process in porous structures are investigated. The numerical and experimental results exhibit good agreement. The results indicates that for higher porosities of metal foams, the PCMs proves to speed up the melting rate. The significance of heat con-duction in melting process of PCM in foam metal is observed. The approach adopted allows to highlight the behavior of the composite PCMs to better characterize its properties of heat-enhancement.
