Abstract:Although nano polycrystalline diamond (NPD) is found with hardness equal to, or even higher than that of single crystal diamond, there are still some controversies about its mechanical responses as well as the plastic deformation mechanisms during the indenting processes. Through molecular dynamics simulations, we have investigated the effects of grain size and temperature on the indentations of NPD. Our results indicate that when the grain size is smaller than 10 nm, NPD would soften as the grain size decreases. For the studied grain sizes of 5, 7, and 10 nm, plastic deformations are resulted from the dislocation propagation mode and the atomic disordering mode. For NPD with the studied grain size of 2 nm, its plastic deformation is mainly determined by the atomic disordering of the diamond grains. Our simulations reveal that higher temperatures result in the softening of NPD, and the plastic deformation mechanisms at high temperatures are basically the same with that at 300 K. The results presented in this work not only provide an answer for the questions about the grain size and temperature effects on the mechanical responses of NPD, but also offer insights into plastic deformation mechanisms of NPD, which could provide reference data for the potential applications as well as the design of novel nano structured superhard materials.
A New View of Incipient Plastic Instability During Nanoindentation

Abstract:Whether the dislocation nucleation or the sudden dislocation multiplication dominates the incipient plastic instability during the nanoindentation of initial defect-free single crystal still remains unclear. In this work, the dislocation mechanism corresponding to the incipient plastic instability is numerically investigated by coupling discrete dislocation dynamics with the finite element method. The coupling model naturally introduces the dislocation nucleation and accurately captures the heterogeneous stress field during nanoindentation. The simulation results show that the first dislocation nucleation induces the initial pop-in event when the indenter is small, while for larger indenters, the incipient plastic instability is ascribed to the cooperation between dislocation nucleation and multiplication. Interestingly, the local dislocation densities for both cases are almost the same when the sudden load drop occurs. Thus it is inferred that the adequate dislocations generated by either nucleation or multiplication, or both, are the requirement for the trigger of incipient plastic instability. A unified dislocation-based mechanism is proposed to interpret the precipitate incipient plastic instability.
Twin-size Effects on the Hardness and Plastic Deformation Mechanisms of Nanotwinned Diamond

Abstract:Although the recently synthesized nanotwinned diamond was found with Vickers hardness exceeding 200 GPa, almost twice the commonly quoted hardness of single crystal diamond, there are still some controversies about the twin-size effects on its hardness and the related plastic deformation mechanisms under Vickers indentations. Through molecular dynamics simulations, we have investigated the behaviors of nanotwinned diamond models under Vickers indentations. Our results indicate that the hardness of nanotwinned diamond would increase with the decreasing of twin boundary separations, but the increasing rate would be reduced due to the concentrated twin boundaries. A formula was given to depict the relationship between hardness and twin thickness, and was consistence with the simulation results. We found that the hardness of nanotwinned diamond is mainly resulted from the competition between strengthening and softening effects of twin boundaries, and the related mechanisms are qualitatively discussed. This work not only provide an answer for the questions about the hardness of nanotwinned diamond versus twin boundary separations, but also offer insights into the plasticity of nanotwinned diamond, which could be beneficial to the design of novel nano structured ultrahard materials and evaluate their origins of hardness and strength.
Dislocation Slip or Phase Transformation Lead to Room-Temperature Plasticity in Diamond: Comment on Plastic Deformation of Single-Crystal Diamond Nanopillars

Abstract:Despite decades of extensive research on mechanical properties of diamond, much remains to be understood in term of plastic deformation mechanisms due to the poor deformability at room temperature. In a recent work in Advanced Materials, it was claimed that room-temperature plasticity occurred in <001>-oriented single-crystal diamond nanopillars based on observation of unrecovered deformation inside scanning electron microscope. The plastic deformation was suggested to be mediated by a phase transition from sp3 carbon to an O8-carbon phase by molecular dynamics simulations. By comparison, our in-situ transmission electron microscopy study reveals that the room-temperature plasticity can be carried out by dislocation slip in both <100> and <111>-oriented diamond nanopillars. The brittle-to-ductile transition is highly dependent on the stress state. We note that the surface structure may play a significant role in the deformation mechanisms as the incipient plasticity always occurs from the surface region in nanoscale diamonds.

Direct Observation of Room-Temperature Dislocation Plasticity in Diamond

Abstract:It is well known that diamond does not deform plastically at room temperature and usually fails in catastrophic brittle fracture. Here we demonstrate room-temperature dislocation plasticity in sub-micrometer sized diamond pillars by in-situ mechanical testing in the transmission electron microscope. We document in unprecedented details of spatio-temporal features of the dislocations introduced by the confinement-free compression, including dislocation generation and propagation. Atom-resolved observations with tomographic reconstructions show unequivocally that mixed-type dislocations with Burgers vectors of 1/2<110> are activated in the non-close-packed {001} planes of diamond under uniaxial compression of <111> and <110> directions, respectively, while being activated in the {111} planes under the <100> directional loading, indicating orientation-dependent dislocation plasticity. These results provide new insights into the mechanical behavior of diamond and stimulate reconsideration of the basic deformation mechanism in diamond as well as in other brittle covalent crystals at low temperatures.

Abstract:The deformation behavior of crystalline materials is influenced by microstructural characteristics such as crystallographic orientation and grain boundary. In this study, nanoindentation experiments and crystal plasticity finite element simulations are used to investigate the effects of these microstructural features on the mechanical properties of polycrystalline copper. A crystal plasticity constitutive model embedded with geometrically necessary dislocations is developed to simulate the indentation mechanical response of grains with different orientations. The results show that the indentation behavior of polycrystalline copper exhibits significant anisotropy due to variations in the distributions of statistically stored dislocations and geometrically necessary dislocations. Moreover, grain boundary plays a crucial role in determining the anisotropy and indentation size effect. These findings provide insights into the design of materials for plasticity applications.

Abstract:The elastic-plastic deformation behavior of single crystal Al0.3CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy under nanoindentation and its plastic deformation mechanisms at the atomic scale are investigated by the molecular dynamics method. The crystal structure evolution and the nucleation and evolution of dislocation in Al0.3CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy during nanoindentation are studied. As the indentation depth increases, the elastic recovery rate decreases nonlinearly and gradually stabilizes in the plastic deformation stage, and the plastic work becomes the dominant work. The generation of stacking faults, various dislocations, and dislocation loops due to the dislocation-dislocation interactions are observed in the simulation cell. The nucleation and growth of Shockley partial dislocations and stacking faults are the main mechanisms for the plastic deformation of Al0.3CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy. The release of dislocation loops under further dislocation reactions becomes a new mechanism of plastic deformation. The competition between material softening caused by plastic yield and strain hardening caused by Stair-rod and Hirth partial dislocations is responsible for fluctuations in force-penetration depth curves.

Abstract:In this work, the indentation-induced incipient plasticity of Ni3Al crystal is investigated by performing molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Simulation results reveal that the incipient plasticity of Ni3Al is originated from the homogeneous nucleation of the 1/6〈112〉-type Shockley partial dislocation. The critical load, critical contact pressure, dislocation nucleation site and active slip system are significantly affected by crystallographic orientation, model size, indenter radius and temperature. The choice of interatomic potential has significant implications for the indentation behavior of Ni3Al. Some benchmarks for evaluating the credibility of interatomic potentials are presented. The pop-in phenomena are correlated with dislocation generation, multiplication and reactions. The formation mechanisms of complex stacking faults (CSFs), antiphase boundaries (APBs) and superlattice intrinsic stacking faults (SISFs) are clarified. The highest indentation modulus is obtained in (111) indentation followed by the (110) and (100) cases. The indentation modulus and the depth of nucleation sites increase with increasing indenter radius but the maximum shear stress decreases. The maximum shear stress and indentation modulus decrease linearly with increasing temperature, reflecting the stress-assisted and thermally activated nature of dislocation nucleation.

Abstract:Amorphous/crystalline nanolaminate composites have aroused extensive research interest because of their high strength and good plasticity. In this paper, the nanoindentation behavior of Cu64Zr36/Cu amorphous/crystalline nanolaminates (ACNLs) is investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation while giving special attention to the plastic processes occurring at the interface. The load–displacement curves of ACNLs reveal small fluctuations associated with shear transformation zone (STZ) activation in the amorphous layer, whereas larger fluctuations associated with dislocations emission occur in the crystalline layer. During loading, local STZ activation occurs and the number of STZs increases as the indentation depth in the amorphous layer increases. These STZs are mostly located around the indenter, which correlates to the high stresses concentrated around the indenter. When the indenter penetrates the crystalline layer, dislocations emit from the interface of amorphous/crystalline, and their number increases with increasing indentation depth. During unloading, the overall number of STZs and dislocations decreases, while other new STZs and dislocations become activated. These results are discussed in terms of stress distribution, residual stresses, indentation rate and indenter radius.

Abstract:Indentation tests with large penetration depths have been used to study the plastic deformation behavior of materials. In this work, finite element simulations of wedge indentation into face-centered cubic single crystals were performed. Numerical solutions to the stresses and shear strains within the single crystals indented with a relatively large penetration depth were obtained. The crystal lattice rotation map of the indented crystals was also shown. Indentation experiments were conducted on copper crystals and the results were used to validate the numerical predictions. Comparison of the numerical solutions to the crystal lattice rotation with the experimentally measured lattice rotation map was made. The main features of the crystal lattice in-plane rotation map from the finite element simulations are also found on the map developed from the electron backscatter diffraction measurements. Both simulations and experimental measurements reveal the same dislocation structures as evidenced by the slip sectors underneath the wedge indentation zone.

Abstract:The yield surface in crystal plasticity can be approached from various directions during mechanical loading. We consider the competition between nanoindentation and tensile loading towards plastic yielding. For this purpose, we develop a two-dimensional discrete dislocation model that is then utilized to investigate the hardness and pop-in event statistics during nanoindentation of single crystal under tensile pre-stress. Indentation is performed by using cylindrical (circular in 2D) indentation with varying radius and under both displacement and load control. Tensile in-plane stress, varying from zero to yield strength, is assigned to investigate the effect of pre-stress on hardness and pop-in statistics. At small indentation depths, the measured hardness is found to be smaller for larger tensile pre-stress; therefore, we conclude that nanoindentation can be used to detect plasticity. When indentation depth is larger, the effect of pre-stress is barely seen. Moreover, we discuss event statistics and the related effect of pre-stress.

Abstract:In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is adopted to explore the mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of a dual-phase CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy during nanoindentation. The influence of the volume fraction of the hexagonal closed-packed (hcp) phase is considered, and the P–h curves are plotted, where the indentation depths of curves initially into the plastic stage and the maximum indentation force for each curve are significantly different. At the elastic stage, the results from MD simulations are in agreement with those of the Hertz contact theory. However, the fitting coefficient k is remarkably influenced by the hcp phase volume fraction. The correlating P–h curves of plastic deformation are investigated by analyzing the instantaneous defect structures dominated by the nucleation of Shockley partial dislocations or the movements of stacking faults. Furthermore, the microstructure evolution with the increment in indentation depth is demonstrated, and it revealed that the plastic deformation is affected by the phase structure indenter that initially contacts. Unlike the slipping process for the face-centered-cube phase, a new hcp structure grain is created through dynamic recrystallization if the hcp phase is the first phase that the indenter touches.

Abstract:The structure of dislocation cores, the fundamental knowledge on crystal plasticity, remains largely unexplored in covalent crystals. Here, we conducted atomically resolved characterizations of dislocation core structures in a plastically deformed diamond anvil cell tip that was unloaded from an exceptionally high pressure of 360 GPa. Our observations unveiled a series of nonequilibrium dislocation cores that deviate from the commonly accepted "five-seven-membered ring" dislocation core model found in FCC-structured covalent crystals. The nonequilibrium dislocation cores were generated through a process known as "mechanical quenching," analogous to the quenching process where a high-energy state is rapidly frozen. The density functional theory-based molecular dynamic simulations reveal that the phenomenon of mechanical quenching in diamond arises from the challenging relaxation of the nonequilibrium configuration, necessitating a large critical strain of 25% that is difficult to maintain. Further electronic-scale analysis suggested that such large critical strain is spent on the excitation of valance electrons for bond breaking and rebonding during relaxation. These findings establish a foundation for the plasticity theory of covalent materials and provide insights into the design of electrical and luminescent properties in diamond, which are intimately linked to the dislocation core structure.

Mapping the initiation of plastic deformation in nanoindentation

Abstract:Under the inhomogenous stress field set up by nanoindentation, the smaller the extent of the stress field the greater the yield pressure. When the specimen contains a thin layer of softer material, the yield pressure is reduced if plasticity initiates in the soft material. A series of specimens with the soft layer at different depths enables the depth at which plasticity initiates to be mapped. InGaAs lattice-matched to InP is used, and the soft layer is 320nm of strained-layer InGaAs superlattice. Under nanoindentation, we find that plastic yield initiates throughout a region ranging from 300nm to over 1um depending on the indenter tip radius. The region matches the depth range over which the stress exceeds the yield stress of the InGaAs. Thus a requirement for yield is an overload, or excess stress, throughout a finite volume.

Abstract:Grain boundaries (GBs), with their diversity in both structure and structural transitions, play an essential role in tailoring the properties of polycrystalline materials 1 – 5 . As a unique GB subset, {112} incoherent twin boundaries (ITBs) are ubiquitous in nanotwinned, face-centred cubic materials 6 – 9 . Although multiple ITB configurations and transitions have been reported 7 , 10 , their transition mechanisms and impacts on mechanical properties remain largely unexplored, especially in regard to covalent materials. Here we report atomic observations of six ITB configurations and structural transitions in diamond at room temperature, showing a dislocation-mediated mechanism different from metallic systems 11 , 12 . The dominant ITBs are asymmetric and less mobile, contributing strongly to continuous hardening in nanotwinned diamond 13 . The potential driving forces of ITB activities are discussed. Our findings shed new light on GB behaviour in diamond and covalent materials, pointing to a new strategy for development of high-performance, nanotwinned materials.
Anisotropic Plastic Deformation Beneath Surface Step During Nanoindentation of FCC Al by Multiscale Analysis

Abstract:Anisotropic plastic deformation beneath surface step during nanoindentation process is investigated applying the quasicontinuum (QC) method. Microscopic mechanisms of effects of surface step on FCC Al (1¯10), (111), and (001) planes under the action of a cylindrical indenter are systematically studied. For steps on (1¯10) plane, dislocations nucleation and emission beneath surface steps is the main plastic deformation characteristic; for steps on (111) plane, the crystal lattice beneath the step undergoes severe distortion and rotation; for steps on (001) plane, deformation twinning and dislocation lock can be observed beneath the surface step. Load–displacement responses of various orientations and roughness are discussed in detail. The concept of geometrically necessary displacement is proposed to describe step flattening process. Strain energy for nanoindentation on stepped and flat surfaces under various crystal orientations is analyzed and compared to further investigate the effect of crystal anisotropic plastic deformation. The description about the atomistic behavior beneath surface step and the discussion about the anisotropic plastic deformation of surface step are meaningful for understanding the influence of surface step on the nanoindentation tests.
Unveiling orientation dependence of anisotropic plasticity in polycrystalline copper by nanoindentation

Abstract:The mechanical properties of crystalline materials are influenced by their deformation behavior, which is associated with their microstructural characteristics. Specifically, crystallographic orientation greatly affects the microscale plastic deformation of individual grains. In this study, experiments and finite element simulations of Berkovich nanoindentations are conducted to investigate the impact of crystallographic orientation in polycrystalline copper. A crystal plasticity constitutive model is developed for copper materials, which accurately captured their indentation mechanical response. The results showed that the indentation behavior of polycrystalline copper exhibits a high degree of anisotropy due to significant variation in slip systems for different crystallographic orientations. This results in different mechanical responses of individual grains and distinct material pileup morphologies on the indented surface. Additionally, the study revealed that crystallographic orientation plays a critical role in determining the indentation size effect. These findings have important implications for the design of materials where plasticity is a crucial factor.

Elastic-Plastic Deformation of KDP Crystals under Nanoindentation

Abstract:This paper investigates the mechanical properties of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystals with the aid of nanoindentation using a conical diamond indenter. It was found that when unloading is after the first pop-in, the common method of obtaining elastic modulus from the unloading curve of nanoindentation is no longer applicable, because the unloading is inelastic. The study revealed that the pop-in could be due to dislocation nucleation and propagation, and that the first pop-in occurs under a stress below that of the major dislocation burst. Hence, the macroscopic yielding point, which is usually regarded as the onset of plasticity of a material, is nanoscopically not a critical point of the first dislocation in KDP. The study found that the elastic modulus of KDP indenting on its (001) plane is 52.8±3.8GPa. The hardness of the material is 1.89±0.05GPa.

Abstract:Micro-nano complex structures of carbon allotrope inside the diamond has strong application potential in optoelectronic devices. Femtosecond laser direct writing is an effective method for processing ultra-high hardness diamonds and has the ability to modify the internal structure of diamonds, but the related mechanism is still unclear. This study investigates the effects of femtosecond laser internal scribing on the localized changes in microstructure, phase transition, stress/strain distribution and mechanical property using molecular dynamics simulation. The statistical analysis of the modified lattice shows that diamond is transformed into amorphous diamond with C-C sp3 bond and dislocations, which was verified by Raman spectra after experiment. These structures allow the modified zone to maintain the same strength as the diamond crystal without losing mechanical strength. The local high temperature and high pressure induced by femtosecond laser are the reasons for the phase transition. The type of dislocation was mainly 1/6<112>. However, the increase of laser energy density induces a large amount of 1/2<110> dislocation in the focal spot area. The femtosecond laser pulse induced stress wave results in increase of dislocation density. Femtosecond laser-induced microstructure evolution can provide guidance for the fabrication of diamond devices with desired electro-optical properties.
