Abstract:In this paper, the surface tracking on epoxy/Magnesia nanocomposites has been investigated. The test was performed based on IEC60112 with NH 4 Cl and sodium-di-butyl dissolved in deionized water as contaminant. Samples 60 mm × 60 mm × 3 mm in size were prepared from Diglycidyl Ether of Bisphenol A (DGEBA) compounded with Magnesia (MgO) with diameters of 50 nm. The surface tracking began as the first contamination droplet formed a conductive film on the sample surface, and its process could be divided into three stages, each of which had its unique phenomenon. When the tracking process ended, branch-like channels were observed on the surface, which remarkably followed the same way with the electric field. In addition, with the doping of nano-MgO increased from 0.1wt% to 10wt%, the ablation area gradually decreased. Compared with pure epoxy, the ablation area of the epoxy resin doped with 10wt% nano-MgO decreased by 58.2%. Based on the experimental results above, a new model was proposed to explain the tracking process and its interaction with nano-MgO fillers.
