Abstract:Micro/nanofibres (MNFs) are optical fibres with diameters close to or below the vacuum wavelength of visible or near-infrared light. Due to its wavelength- or sub-wavelength scale diameter and relatively large index contrast between the core and cladding, an MNF can offer engineerable waveguiding properties including optical confinement, fractional evanescent fields and surface intensity, which is very attractive to optical sensing on the micro and nanometer scale. In particular, the waveguided low-loss tightly confined large fractional evanescent fields, enabled by atomic level surface roughness and extraordinary geometric and material uniformity in a glass MNF, is one of its most prominent merits in realizing optical sensing with high sensitivity and great versatility. Meanwhile, the mesoporous matrix and small diameter of a polymer MNF, make it an excellent host fibre for functional materials for fast-response optical sensing. In this tutorial, we first introduce the basics of MNF optics and MNF optical sensors, and review the progress and current status of this field. Then, we discuss challenges and prospects of MNF sensors to some extent, with several clues for future studies. Finally, we conclude with a brief outlook for MNF optical sensors.

Abstract:Optical micro-nanofibcrs (MNFs) have diameters close to or smaller than the wavelength of the guided light. Recently, MNFs have attracted wide attention due to their important applications in optofluidic sensors. This paper begins with a brief introduction of the fabrication methods and waveguiding properties of MNFs. Based on intensity and phase modulation, we introduce the research progress of optofluidic MNF sensors in chemical and biological sensing with high sensitivity, fast response, and small footprint. Finally, the development and application of optofluidic MNF sensors are summarized and prospected.

Abstract:Among various nanostructures for low-dimensional photonics, the one-dimensional nanowire is of great importance owing to its capability of routing tightly confined light fields in single-mode with least space and material requirement, minimized optical path, and high mechanical flexibility. Free-standing optical nanowires or nanofibers fabricated by either chemical growth or physical drawing techniques surpass nanowaveguides fabricated by almost all other means in terms of sidewall smoothness and diameter uniformity, conveying their low waveguiding losses.With high index contrast between the core and the surrounding, a nanowire can guide light with tightly confined large fractional evanescent waves, which enables highly localized near-field interaction between the guided fields and the surrounding media. In this talk, we show the possibility of on-chip integration of free-standing optical nanofibers and nanowires. Firstly, by embedding nanofibers with microfluidic chips, we show ultrasensitive optical sensors for physical and bio-chemical detection. Secondly, by near-field coupling of free-standing nanowires/nanofibers with silicon-on-insulator waveguides, we show hybrid photonic circuits for optical modulation and light generation on silicon chips.

Abstract:With diameter close to or below the wavelength of guided light and high index contrast between the fiber core and the surrounding, an optical microfiber shows a variety of interesting waveguiding properties, including widely tailorable optical confinement, evanescent fields and waveguide dispersion. Among various microfiber applications, optical sensing has been attracting increasing research interest due to its possibilities of realizing miniaturized fiber optic sensors with small footprint, high sensitivity, fast response, high flexibility and low optical power consumption. Here we review recent progress in microfiber optical sensors regarding their fabrication, waveguide properties and sensing applications. Typical microfiber-based sensing structures, including biconical tapers, optical gratings, circular cavities, Mach-Zehnder interferometers and functionally coated/doped microfibers, are summarized. Categorized by sensing structures, microfiber optical sensors for refractive index, concentration, temperature, humidity, strain and current measurement in gas or liquid environments are reviewed. Finally, we conclude with an outlook for challenges and opportunities of microfiber optical sensors.

Abstract:Abstract (100 Word Limit): When its size goes down to the wavelength of the guided light, an optical nanofibre/nanowire exhibits interesting properties such as tight optical confinement, strong near-field interaction, abnormal dispersion, enhanced surface effects and excellent mechanical flexibilities, which opens opportunities for combining waveguide optics with near-field optics, nonlinear optics, plasmonics, quantum optics and optomechanics on the nanoscale and low power level, and intrigues a variety of novel nanophotonic components/devices. This talk reviews the principles and technological applications of optical nanofibres and nanowires. Future applications of these one-dimensional building blocks for optical communications and sensing are also discussed. Presenter Bio (100 Word Limit): Limin Tong received his BS and MSc degrees in Physics and PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, in 1991, 1994 and 1997, respectively. In 1997 he joined the Department of Physics, Zhejiang University, China as an assistant professor. In 2001 he joined Mazur group, Harvard University as a visiting scientist, and returned Zhejiang University in 2004. He is currently a professor and director of Department of Optical Engineering at Zhejiang University. His research interest has been in the area of nanophotonics and fibre optics.

Abstract:As a combination of fiber optics and nanotechnology, optical micro/nanofiber (MNF) is considered as an important multifunctional building block for fabricating various miniaturized photonic devices. With the rapid progress in flexible opto-electronics, MNF has been emerging as a promising candidate for assembling tactile sensors and soft actuators owing to its unique optical and mechanical properties. This review discusses the advances in MNF enabled tactile sensors and soft actuators, specifically, focusing on the latest research results over the past 5 years and the applications in health monitoring, human-machine interfaces, and robotics. Future prospects and challenges in developing flexible MNF devices are also presented.

Abstract:We report a robust and sensitive optical nanofiber sensor with a femtoliter-scale detection volume. The sensor is fabricated by embedding a 800-nm-diameter nanofiber into a microfluidic chip with probing light propagated perpendicular to a 5-μm-wide detection channel. To verify the effectiveness of the sensor, we present measurements of fluorescence intensity and refractive index (RI) with detection limits of 1 × 10(-7) M for fluorescein and 2.8 × 10(-4) RIU, respectively. The femtoliter-scale optical nanofiber sensor shown here may provide a compact and versatile sensing platform for sensitive and fast detection of ultra-low-volume samples, as well as studying the dynamics of single molecule.

Abstract:This review describes the research progress of resonance optical fiber sensors based on low‐dimensional materials, and resonance optical fiber sensors modified by low‐dimensional materials are introduced. The role of low‐dimensional materials in resonance fiber sensing is summarized, and the direction of performance optimization in the production process and the future prospects of new resonance optical fiber sensors are given. Resonance optical fiber sensors are widely studied for their high sensitivity, small size, and anti‐electromagnetic interference. However, traditional resonance optical fiber sensors have encountered bottlenecks in the trace detection due to limited localized field intensity and low molecules affinity. With the development of materials technology, low‐dimensional materials such as quantum dots, graphene, and transition metal sulfides have excellent properties such as high carrier mobility, large specific surface area, and flexible structure controllable artificial technologies that can also be used to synthesize new materials with desired characteristics, which can enhance the performance of sensors fundamentally. The introduction of low‐dimensional materials can not only achieve the performance optimization of sensors, but also make sensors functional to realize the diversification of detection objects. This paper reviews the research progress of resonance optical fiber sensors based on low‐dimensional materials. The detection principle and performance indexes related to resonance optical fiber sensing are elaborated, and resonance optical fiber sensors modified by low‐dimensional materials are introduced. Furthermore, the role of low‐dimensional materials in resonance fiber sensing is summarized, the direction of performance optimization in the production process of resonance fiber sensors is analyzed, and the future prospect of new resonance optical fiber sensors is given.

Xiao, and co-workers report that such a tiny optical device can detect and size single nanoscale particles, owing to its high sensitivity and real-time response ability. This simple and promising design may facilitate important applications, such as early-stage biomedical diagnostics, process control of semiconductor manufacturing, and explosives and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Graphene is an excellent base material for a nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) because of its extraordinary characteristics, including a large specific surface area, high Young's modulus, enormous stiffness, and low density. The graphene NEMS mainly studies the electromechanical properties of graphene films. Its resonant frequency has a very sensitive response to mass, force, and heat, which has a great application prospect in the sensing field. Meanwhile, the optical fiber sensor has been widely studied and applied, whose combination with graphene can possess a greater advantage. In this paper, the working principle, preparation process, sensing application of the graphene NEMS as well as the fiber-based graphene NEMS sensors arc reviewed and prospected.

Abstract:Electronic skin, a class of wearable electronic sensors that mimic the functionalities of human skin, has made remarkable success in applications including health monitoring, human-machine interaction and electronic-biological interfaces. While electronic skin continues to achieve higher sensitivity and faster response, its ultimate performance is fundamen-tally limited by the nature of low-frequency AC currents. Herein, highly sensitive skin-like wearable optical sensors are demonstrated by embedding glass micro/nanofibers (MNFs) in thin layers of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Enabled by the transition from guided modes into radiation modes of the waveguiding MNFs upon external stimuli, the skin-like opti-cal sensors show ultrahigh sensitivity (1870 kPa-1), low detection limit (7 mPa) and fast response (10 μs) for pressure sensing, significantly exceeding the performance metrics of state-of-the-art electronic skins. Electromagnetic interference (EMI)-free detection of high-frequency vibrations, wrist pulse and human voice are realized. Moreover, a five-sensor op-tical data glove and a 2×2-MNF tactile sensor are demonstrated. These initial results pave the way toward a new cate-gory of optical devices ranging from ultrasensitive wearable sensors to optical skins.
Miniature Sensor Based on Fiber-graphene-integrated NEMS

Abstract:We demonstrate a new fiber-optic current sensor based on graphene nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) with a graphene membrane covering the hole on a fiber tip and two gold electrodes on opposite sides of the tip. The suspended graphene membrane will deform due to thermal effect when electrical current flows through it. Then the strain in the graphene nanomechanical resonator will change and it leads to the shift of resonant frequency. The proposed sensor is compact and shows a sensitivity as high as ~ 262.5 kHz/mA 2 . It can also be used for magnetic field sensors based on Lorentz force.

Abstract:Micro-/nanofibers (MNFs) are optical fibers with diameters close to or below the wavelength of the guided light. These tiny fibers can offer engineerable waveguiding properties including optical confinement, fractional evanescent fields, and surface intensity, which is very attractive to optical sensing on the micro-/nano scale. In this review, we first introduce the basics of MNF optics and MNF optical sensors from physical and chemical to biological applications and review the progress and current status of this field. Then, we review and discuss hybrid MNF structures for advanced optical sensing by merging MNFs with functional structures including chemical indicators, quantum dots, dye molecules, plasmonic nanoparticles, 2-D materials, and optofluidic chips. Thirdly, we introduce the emerging trends in developing MNF-based advanced sensing technology for ultrasensitive, active, and wearable sensors and discuss the future prospects and challenges in this exciting research field. Finally, we end the review with a brief conclusion.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, the integration of graphene and related two-dimensional (2D) materials in optical fibers have stimulated significant advances in all-fiber photonics and optoelectronics. The conventional passive silica fiber devices with 2D materials are empowered for enhancing light-matter interactions and are applied for manipulating light beams in respect of their polarization, phase, intensity and frequency, and even realizing the active photo-electric conversion and electro-optic modulation, which paves a new route to the integrated multifunctional all-fiber optoelectronic system. This article reviews the fast-progress field of hybrid 2D-materials-optical-fiber for the opto-electro-mechanical devices. The challenges and opportunities in this field for future development are discussed.

Abstract:Graphene, a novel form of the hexagonal honeycomb two-dimensional carbon-based structural material with a zero-band gap and ultra-high specific surface area, has unique optoelectronic capabilities, promising a suitable basis for its application in the field of optical fiber sensing. Graphene optical fiber sensing has also been a hotspot in cross-research in biology, materials, medicine, and micro-nano devices in recent years, owing to prospective benefits, such as high sensitivity, small size, and strong anti-electromagnetic interference capability and so on. Here, the progress of optical fiber biochemical sensors based on graphene is reviewed. The fabrication of graphene materials and the sensing mechanism of the graphene-based optical fiber sensor are described. The typical research works of graphene-based optical fiber biochemical sensor, such as long-period fiber grating, Bragg fiber grating, no-core fiber and photonic crystal fiber are introduced, respectively. Finally, prospects for graphene-based optical fiber biochemical sensing technology will also be covered, which will provide an important reference for the development of graphene-based optical fiber biochemical sensors.

Abstract:Fiber optic (FO) sensors have great potential for low-cost, microsample testing and compact medical diagnostics. In this work, a FO sensor based on dielectric nanostructure is proposed and demonstrated based on the unique characteristics of dielectric materials, such as low ohmic loss and good biocompatibility. Specifically, we fabricate a SPR-FO sensor by inserting a sleeve with a large-scale, highly ordered dielectric nanodisk array at the end of the fiber probe. And we systematically investigate the sensing performance of the FO sensor including bulk and surface sensitivities. It is found that due to very low absorption losses, the FO sensor based on dielectric nanodisk exhibits a narrow resonance, thus leading to a sensing figure-of-merit almost twice larger than that of based on the metal plasmonic nanodisk. Also, the FO sensor shows a linear response to adsorbate layer thickness changes, which is clearly advantageous for quantitative analysis. Due to the highly localized electromagnetic fields, it can detect small molecules with a concentration of 1 μM, in which a molecular layer with thickness less than 1 nm can produce resonance changes as large as 6 nm. Our work could open a new opportunity for future bio-compatible, robust and low-loss medical diagnostic devices.

Abstract:The unique electronic and mechanical properties, of graphene make it an ideal material for nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) applications. Here, a miniature optical fiber current sensor based on a quasistatic graphene NEMS with a graphene membrane covering the hole on a pre-etched fiber tip and two gold electrodes on opposite sides of the tip has been demonstrated. The sensor overcomes the shortcomings of conventional optical fiber current sensors based on thermal effects, such as relatively low sensitivity, long response time, and huge device size; it has simultaneously a high sensitivity of 2.2 x 10(5) nm/A(2), a short response time of similar to 0.25 s and a compact device size of similar to 15 mu m, and has found practical application. Using a smaller graphene membrane with better quality can reduce the response time to submillisecond levels with a more precise measurement system. The sensor presented in this paper may pave the way for the practical usage of optical fiber current sensors based on thermal effects.
