Abstract:Water scarcity and pollution has become one of the most serious problems in the world. Generally, both oils and microorganisms exist in polluted water, hence multi-functional materials for the removal of diverse substances from water are desired. We reported a facile method for preparing cotton fabric possessing hybrid poly(sodium methacrylate) (pNaMAA)/silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for oil/water separation and water disinfection. A crosslinked pNaMAA layer was generated on the cotton surface by ultraviolet-initiated polymerization. By replacing Na+ in pNaMAA molecules, Ag+ was incorporated into the fabric and then was reduced to AgNPs in situ by photo-thermal reduction. Due to the high underwater oleophobicity and bactericidal effect of the pNaMAA/AgNP hybrid layer, the gravity-driven oil/water separation efficiency of the prepared fabric was higher than 99% and the bacteria killing ratio achieved nearly 100%. Furthermore, AgNPs exhibited relatively good fastness during application. Combining their excellent oil removal and water disinfection effectiveness, these textile-based materials provide a promising future in the field of point-of-use water purification.

Abstract:Mesoporous core-shell structure Ag@SiO2 nanospheres are constructed to prevent Ag nanoparticles from aggregation during the hydrogenation reaction. Abstract:Water pollution has become a prominent environmental problem and insoluble oils and soluble dyes are the primary pollution sources. Herein, a facile and environment friendly method is proposed to fabricate robust CuO nanorod-covered meshes for dual-functional water purification. The as-prepared meshes can efficiently eliminate oils in wastewater and in situ photodegrade soluble organic dyes under visible light irradiation. Such a functional mesh is free-standing and recyclable, indicating the outstanding practicability of water sewage disposal. In consideration of the superiority of low-cost materials, simple method, visible-light response, ultrahigh purification efficiency and reusability, the as-prepared meshes are promising in the field of multi-functional water purification.

Abstract:<p>In this work, we reported a facile, scalable and, environmentally friendly approach to encapsulate catalytically active Ag nanoparticles (NPs) in porous metal-organic gel (MOG) <em>via in situ</em> grown. Attributing to the porous and abundant coordination cites in structural features of the MOG, Ag NPs can be readily fixed in the MOG with a uniform distribution. The resultant Ag hybrid exhibited a remarkable and durable activity for the catalytic reduction of nitrophenol to aminophenol compounds in an aqueous solution. The strategy for preparing hybrid based on MOGs opens a way toward the functional applications of MOGs.</p>

Effective Fabrication of Porous Au-Ag Alloy Nanorods for in Situ Raman Monitoring Catalytic Oxidation and Reduction Reactions

Abstract:Porous metal nanostructures exhibit excellent catalytic properties due to their high surface-to-volume ratios and abundant catalytic active sites. However, it is still challenging to control nanopores density and structural features in a facile route and the preparation of porous alloy nanorods for catalytic application has not been well explored. In this work, we demonstrate a synthetic strategy to fabricate highly porous Au–Ag alloy nanorods (P-AuAgNRs) by critically dealloying Ag atoms from homogeneous solid Au–Ag alloy nanorods (AuAgNRs). Combining the merits of the tunable plasmonic properties of noble metal nanorods, excellent stabilities of alloys, and superior catalytic activities of porous structures, we use the P-AuAgNRs as a Raman probe for the in situ monitoring of the catalytic oxidation of 3,3’,5,5’ tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and reduction of 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP). We also compare their composition-dependent catalytic activities. The results show that P-AuAgNRs possess superior chemical stability and higher catalytic activity than those of core-shell structures due to synergistic structural and chemical mechanisms. This strategy provides a predictive design approach for the next-generation alloy catalysts with high-performance.
Indirect Fabrication of Ag Nanoparticle-Immobilized Hollow Silica Composite Particles and Their Catalysis

Abstract:A simple and effective method is proposed to prepare Ag nanoparticle-immobilized hollow silica particles (SiO2HP/AgNP composite particles). Ag2O nanoparticles are first immobilized on hollow silica particles (SiO2HP) by in situ thermolysis of AgNO3 to get SiO2HP/Ag2ONP composite particles. Then, the Ag2ONPs immobilized on SiO2HP are translated to AgNPs by chemical or thermal reduction to obtain SiO2HP/AgNP composite particles. The resultant AgNPs have ultrafine nano-size and uniform and dense distribution, which benefits from the slow and moderate reaction in the formation of Ag2ONPs. The influencing factors including the surface property of SiO2HP, mass proportion of silver salt to silica, and reaction temperature have been studied. The composite particles exhibit excellent catalytic efficiency and repeatability in 4-nitrophenol reduction. Moreover, the catalytic activity can be further enhanced by adding a trace amount of NH3 into the system, which has obvious synergies for catalysis with AgNPs.

Abstract:A facile route has been developed for the preparation of stable and recyclable Ag3PO4 nanoparticles to upgrade the photocatalytic capacity and practicality. Ag3PO4 nanoparticles are first in situ deposited on a negatively charged potassium alginate/CNT colloidal solution, and then Ag3PO4 CNT and TiO2 assemble alternately on cotton fabric with the attraction of positive and negative charges. Taking advantage of the excellent absorptive capacity and recyclable nature of cotton fabric, the Ag3PO4-CNT/TiO2 photocatalytic coating presents great photocatalytic performance and recyclability for both liquid rhodamine B and gas toluene decomposition. The 7 bilayer (BL) form is the best for RhB degradation with a minimum residual of 3.94% within 5 min under visible light, and the SBL form presents the highest toluene degradation rate (95.96%) within 60 min under simulated sunlight. Furthermore, the stability of Ag3PO4 has been greatly improved. The photocatalytic mechanism of this coating system is analyzed by ESR measurement. This work provides a nice strategy to realize the practical application of nanoscale powder photocatalysts in both liquid and gas pollutant removal.

Abstract:This paper reports an aggregation-based method for the fabrication of composite Au/Ag nanoshells with tunable thickness and surface roughness. It is found that the resultant roughened composite Au/Ag nanoshells can attract each other spontaneously to form films at the air-water interface. Importantly, such films can be transferred onto the solid substrates without being destroyed and show excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement ability. Their strong enhancement ability may stem from the unique two-dimensional structure itself.

Abstract:Dual purification of both oily wastewater and dye-polluted water for enhancing the use of freshwater is an urgent task. We report herein, the facile synthesis of inorganic semiconductor nanomaterials anchored mesh for in situ dual-functional water purification. This resultant mesh combines the excellent capacity of oil removal and the advantage of photocatalytic performance for dye degradation under visible light irradiation at the same time. In addition, the mesh was easily regenerated and remained unaltered in photocatalytic performance over five successive dye degradation cycles. Given the innovative integration of special wettability and photocatalytic activity of such a semiconductor material under visible light for dual elimination of various pollutants from water, we anticipate that this approach will provide a promising pathway for versatile applications in oily wastewater treatment, water purification and so on.

Abstract:The development of stable and durable oil/water separation materials with photocatalytic activity holds great significance for the purification of complex oily wastewater containing refractory organic pollutants. Herein, a multifunctional Ag@Cu 2 O decorated copper mesh was designed and prepared via a two-step hydrothermal method. The material possesses outstanding superwettability, photocatalytic activity, and antibacterial properties towards Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The mesh demonstrates remarkable and durable superhydrophilic properties while maintaining underwater superoleophobic characteristics, enabling excellent separation efficiency and high permeability flux involving various oil/water mixtures in gravity-driven separation processes. Under visible light, the Ag@Cu 2 O anchored mesh serves as an effective photocatalyltic catalyst in the removal of dyes and tetracycline antibiotics from aqueous solution. The catalyst shows high stability and reusability which exhibits high performance after 5 cyclic photocatalytic tests. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the improved photocatalytic performance is attributed to the narrowed indirect band gap after Ag anchoring. The silver atoms induce the energy level of Cu 3d orbital shifting up, enhancing the photocatalytic activity of Cu 2 O. The outstanding performance of Ag@Cu 2 O anchored mesh endows this material with great application potential in removal of refractory pollutants from oily wastewater.

Abstract:We report a "one-pot" method for the direct synthesis of an organosilica shell/silica core nanoreactor confined with ultra-small metal (Au, Pd, and Ru) nanoparticles. The nano-reactor confined with Au nanoparticles showed high activity towards styrene oxidation using O2 as the oxidant under 1 atm pressure and could be stably recycled without deterioration of both conversion and selectivity. The strategy could be adapted onto other nanostructures with little modification to obtain yolk-shell nanoreactors for catalysis application.

Abstract:Chinese knot is a “traditional handicraft art” in Chinese culture, which is expected to ward off evil spirits and pray for good luck. It is constructed by weaving cords and tying different types of knots firmly. Inspired by Chinese knot, a robust 1D Ag nanowire membrane with nanoscale knots is fabricated to achieve robust catalytic/anti‐bacterial separation. Silver mirror reaction is manipulated to anchor Ag nanowires on a hierarchical polyvinylidene fluoride membrane substrate. The robust Ag nanowire membrane withstands the vigorous cross‐flow hydraulic shear (3000 mL min−1) for 24 h at 0.1 MPa without any physicochemical deterioration. The Chinese knot inspired membrane exhibits extraordinary robustness in continuous catalysis, “kill‐release” anti‐bacteria, oil‐in‐water emulsion, and ultrafiltration separation. This work paves a new way for constructing a robust 1D inorganic nanowire membrane for water remediation applications. A Chinese knot inspired Ag nanowire membrane is designed to achieve robust catalytic/anti‐bacterial separation in water remediation. Both polyvinylidene fluoride micro/nanostructures and Ag nanoknots play a crucial role in firmly anchoring the Ag nanowire layer. The Chinese knot inspired membrane paves a new way for multipurpose membrane applications in catalysis, energy storage, and separation.

Abstract:In this study, a multifunctional material for highly efficient oil/water separation and catalytic reduction has been fabricated via a facile two-step immersion method. Firstly, PVA sponge was coated with polydopamine and polyethylenepolyamine codeposition films, and then Ag nanoparticle was reduced and anchored on sponge. The as-prepared Ag@PDA/PEPA sponge exhibits superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic wettability and the Ag nanoparticles on the sponge possess catalytic performance. The composite materials can simultaneously achieve has been significantly promoting and decomposition of water-miscible contaminants as the water pass through the sponge in a short time. The separation efficiencies of various oil/water mixtures are above 99.9% in a single unit operation with high fluxes, and 4-nitrophenol can be effectively reduced while the water pass through the modified sponge. The multifunctional composite sponge allows continuous treatment of polluted oily wastewater and has broad potential in purification engineering.

Abstract:Uniform α-Fe 2 O 3 nanotubes with small aspect ratio were successfully fabricated by a hydrothermal method. In situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to study the mechanistic details of adsorption and photocatalytic oxidation of naphthalene over theα-Fe 2 O 3 nanotubes. A possible degradation mechanism of naphthalene was proposed.
Toward Efficient Oil Energy Recovery: Eco-Friendly Fabrication of a Biomimetic Durable Metal Mesh with a Moss-Like Silver Nanocluster Structure

Abstract:With the purpose of oil energy recovery as well as achieving efficiency of oil/water separation, hydrophobic mesh materials have attracted extensive attention. However, fabrication of the current methods is not environmentally friendly, has high energy consumption, and creates serious pollution. Inspired by lotus leaves and rose petals, a biomimetic superhydrophobic surface was fabricated prepared on a stainless steel mesh by an in situ chemical reduction method with simple operation and mild conditions. The results of SEM, XRD, and XPS demonstrated that the mesh shows a stable and uniform moss-like rough structured surface. The SSM/Ag/ODA mesh, which was modified by moss-like Ag nanoclusters and low surface energy agents, has excellent superhydrophobicity with an excellent oil/water separation efficiency that reached up to 99.8%. The silver mirror phenomenon formed by the Ag nanoclusters further confirmed that silver ions were reduced and attached to the surface of the mesh. Moreover, the mesh can maintain superhydrophobicity under harsh conditions, such as a high concentration of a salty solution, organic solvents, alkaline, acidic solution, and even long-time UV irradiation, etc. More importantly, the modified mesh has excellent physical stability, in which the water contact angle on the mesh can be maintained above 150° after harsh mechanical wear. Abstract:We report a facile and eco-friendly approach to the synthesis of carbon nanofibers (CNFs), using cornstalks as carbon precursors and pinewood-derived carbon powders with inherent rough surfaces as catalytic substrates during chemical vapor deposition. Then, we annealed the CNFs in the presence of ammonia to impart them nitrogen doping (NCNFs), large surface areas, hydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity. As a result, the NCNF networks achieved via vacuum filtration could work as oil/dye dual-functional filtration membranes for simultaneous removal of crude oil droplets, methylene blue and reactive violet K-3R from water with high flux up to 4950 L m −2 h −1 , high efficiency of 99.82% and excellent recyclability. Finally, cobalt oxide (Co x O y ) nanoparticles were deposited on NCNFs to prepare Co x O y /NCNF composites, which exhibited higher electrocatalytic activity (overpotential at current density of 10 mA cm −2 : 290 mV) and better durability towards the oxygen evolution reaction than the state-of-the-art precious iridium oxide catalysts. This may be attributable to nitrogen doping, synergistic effect between Co x O y and NCNFs, as well as the superior structural and compositional stability of the Co x O y /NCNF composites.

Abstract:Flexible multiple functional textiles for oil/water separation and photodegradation are highly demanded in highly effective and environmentally friendly wastewater purification. In this work, β-FeOOH nanorods were in situ hydrothermally grown on polydopamine (PDA)-templated cotton fabric (CF) followed by decoration of 1-Dodecanethiol (DDT) on the surface for highly efficient oil/water separation and visible-light-driven photodegradation of dyes. The morphology, structure and wettability of the as-prepared fabrics were characterized and the oil/water separation together with photocatalysis of MB were investigated. The results showed that β-FeOOH nanorods were successfully grown on the PDA-templated cotton fabrics with durable hydrophobicity and lipophilicity. The as-prepared fabrics were demonstrated in oil/water separation of different oil with high separation rates, and the mechanism was proposed. The fabrics also showed excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance in degrading methylene blue (MB) solution with stability and reliability, and the photocatalysis mechanism was contributed. This work provides insights on developing multiple functional textiles by combining photocatalysis with special wettability.
