This review underscores the inherent advantages of electrochemical techniques, such as high sensitivity, selectivity, and capability for real-time analysis, making them highly effective for formaldehyde monitoring. We explore the fundamental principles, mechanisms, and diverse methodologies employed in electrochemical formaldehyde detection, highlighting the role of innovative sensing materials and electrodes. Special attention is given to recent developments in nanotechnology and sensor design, which significantly enhance the sensitivity and selectivity of these detection systems. Abstract:Based on the gas–liquid phase chemiluminescence tester independently developed by our laboratory, a highly sensitive, fast and accurate on-line detection method of formaldehyde gas in ambient atmosphere is established. The chemiluminescence system and the trace formaldehyde gas in the air directly undergo an interface heterogeneous chemiluminescence reaction to obtain a strong chemiluminescence signal. Through the measurement of the chemiluminescence signal intensity, a highly sensitive, real-time and on-line method for the determination of formaldehyde in the air was established. Factors influencing the experimental results such as gallic acid, potassium dichromate, reaction medium concentration, surfactant type and concentration, pump speed, tube length, and interfering gas were discussed based on the single factor and orthogonal analysis results. Finally, the optimal detection conditions were collected, and the detection results were compared with the national standard phenol reagent method. The results show that when the concentration of the standard formaldehyde gas is in the range of 0–0.582 μg L −1 , the linear equation of this method is y = 208 x + 29.667, the linear coefficient is R 2 = 0.997, and the minimum detection concentration of formaldehyde is 2.327 × 10 −3 μg L −1 . Under the same external conditions, the comparison and analysis using the national standard phenol reagent method proved that this method has the advantages of fast detection speed, low detection limit, good sensitivity, and accurate results, which can be used for real-time and online determination of trace formaldehyde in ambient air.

Abstract:The level of formaldehyde in Beijing ambient air was measured by 2,4dinitrophenylhydrazine(DNPH) and HPLC.This method was applied to monitor formaldehyde concentrations of Beijing ambient air in July,September,December 2006 and in March 2007.During the study period,the average level of formaldehyde was (7.56×)10~(-9),(12.70×)10~(-9),(7.24×)10~(-9) and(3.34×)10~(-9) for spring,summer,autumn and winter respectively.The level of formaldehyde in summer was obviously higher than that in the other three seasons,the spring level was near to the autumn level,and the winter level was lowest.During summer,HCHO,O_3,UVB and temperature showed a similar diurnal variation,and their peaks all appeared during 12:00 to 15:00. This phenomenon provided direct evidence that the formaldehyde levels were significantly affected by the atmospheric photo-oxidation processes in summer.The wet deposition played an important role in removal of atmospheric formaldehyde.

Abstract:In this work, we report a rapid analytical method for the determination of trace formaldehyde in cosmetics on a 12.5 mm C-18 guard column. The shortest time (0.5 min) was obtained for one separation with 1.5 mL min(-1) of methanol-water 50 : 50 (v/v) as the mobile phase at a column temperature of 30 degrees C. A linear response between peak area and the concentration of formaldehyde was obtained over the range 0.1 to 20 mg L-1 with a relative standard deviation of 1.4% (n = 10) at the concentration of 1.0 mg L-1 and a detection limit of 5.1 mg L-1. The confirmation assay by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry indicated that there was no interfering effect from other carbonyl compounds. The proposed method was applied for the determination of formaldehyde residue in cosmetics at the mg L-1 level. Free formaldehyde up to 27 mg kg(-1) was found in cosmetics and the spike recovery at the spiked levels of 1.0 and 10.0 mg L-1 varying from 92% to 105% was also obtained. The difference between the values determined by the proposed method and the standard spectrophotometric method was below 3.7%. The results proved the accuracy and precision of the method, showing potential for the routine analysis of formaldehyde residue.

Abstract:Formaldehyde, as an important pollutant in indoor air, has always been of great concern. In the newly issued "Standards for indoor air quality (GB/T 18883-2022)", the standard limit of formaldehyde has been restricted to 0.08 mg/m3. In order to better promote the implementation and application of this new standard, this study reviewed and interpreted the relevant technical content for determining the standard limit, including the indoor concentration and human exposure levels of formaldehyde, the health effects of formaldehyde, and the derivation of safety reference values. It also proposed prospect for the future development and revision of quality standards for formaldehyde in indoor air.

Abstract:A continuous determination system of atmospheric formaldehyde was established based on high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). The sampling system employs scrubbing coil to trap atmospheric formaldehyde into an acid solution of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH). Reaction between formaldehyde and DNPH produces a stable product which is determined by reverse-phase HPLC and UV detection. All measurement operations are controlled by DasyLab. The automated measurement can be performed at 60min intervals. The detection limit was 0.10μg/L. The concentration of formaldehyde was determined with the method. The average concentration is 4.82μg/L,and showed obvious diurnal variation in October,2007.

Abstract:The indoor pollution caused by formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from building materials poses an adverse effect on people's health. It is necessary to understand and control the behaviors of the emission sources. Based on detailed mass transfer analysis on the emission process in a ventilated chamber, this paper proposes a novel method of measuring the three emission characteristic parameters, i.e., the initial emittable concentration, the diffusion coefficient and the partition coefficient. A linear correlation between the logarithm of dimensionless concentration and time is derived. The three parameters can then be calculated from the intercept and slope of the correlation. Compared with the closed chamber C-history method, the test is performed under ventilated condition thus some commonly-used measurement instruments (e.g., GC/MS, HPLC) can be applied. While compared with other methods, the present method can rapidly and accurately measure the three parameters, with experimental time less than 12h and R(2) ranging from 0.96 to 0.99 for the cases studied. Independent experiment was carried out to validate the developed method, and good agreement was observed between the simulations based on the determined parameters and experiments. The present method should prove useful for quick characterization of formaldehyde/VOC emissions from indoor materials.

Abstract:Formaldehyde is one of the most important indoor air pollutants affecting human immune system, and causing various respiratory diseases and even certain cancers. Traditional formaldehyde detection technologies are bulky, expensive and difficult to maintain. Here, we report a colorimetric chemical sensing platform for fast (2 min) and sensitive detection (30 ppbv) of formaldehyde over a wide dynamic range (0-750 ppbv). The sensor can tolerate humidity variation from 5% to 90% and is immune of common interferents, such as CO2 (4%), SO2 (10 ppm), NO2 (125 ppbv), and O-3 (300 ppbv) in air. We also demonstrated continuous detection of formaldehyde on this sensing platform using disposable sensor chip.

Abstract:We analyzed two data sets of atmospheric formaldehyde (FA) at an urban site in the Shanghai megacity during the summer of 2017 and the winter of 2017/18, with the primary objective of determining the emission ratio of formaldehyde versus carbon monoxide (CO). Through the photochemical age method and the minimum R squared (MRS) method, we derived the summer urban formaldehyde release ratios of 3.37 ppbv (ppmv of CO)(-1) and 4.04 ppbv (ppmv of CO)(-1), respectively. The error of both estimations is within +/- 20%, indicating the consistency of the results. We recognized the hourly minimum emission ratios determined from the MRS method to be indicative of actual formaldehyde emission ratios. Similarly, the emission ratio in winter is determined to be 2.10 ppbv (ppmv of CO)(-1) utilizing the MRS method. The findings provide significant insights into the potential impact of motor vehicle exhaust on formaldehyde emissions in urban areas. This work demonstrates that the formaldehyde emission ratio determined by the MRS method can be used to represent the emissions of the freshest air mass. Formaldehyde photolysis contributed an average of 9% to the free radical primary reaction rate (P(ROx)) as a single chemical species during the daytime in summer, which was lower than the 11% recorded in winter. Formaldehyde emission reduction positively impacts local ozone production, so models describing ozone formation in Shanghai during summer need to reflect these emissions accurately. Evidence of the crucial catalytic role of formaldehyde in particulate matter formation has been confirmed by recent research. A potentially effective way to decrease the incidence of haze days in autumn and winter in the future is therefore to focus on reducing formaldehyde emissions.
Two-parameter C-history Method: A Fast and Accurate Method for Determining the Characteristic Parameters of Formaldehyde/voc Early-Stage Emissions from Building Materials

Abstract:With the worsening indoor air quality in developing countries, more and more attention is being paid to indoor air pollution, especially formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from indoor building materials. A series of methods, such as the C -history method, have been proposed to determine the mechanistic parameters of formaldehyde and other VOC emissions. However, these methods require a relatively long test duration (at least 3 days) and may yield a multi -solution problem for these parameters. Therefore, we have developed a novel method, the two -parameter C -history method, to overcome these limitations by measuring the two early -stage emission characteristic parameters for formaldehyde/VOCs. The experimental results validate the accuracy of this method for different building materials and showed that the test duration can be substantially shortened to within 12 h. Based on this, we propose a new method to quickly predict the two emission characteristic parameters at different temperatures. We optimize the experimental parameters and discuss their influence to further improve accuracy. This method will be useful in engineering applications.

Abstract:Formaldehyde is a harmful substance that can cause sick building syndrome and other diseases, such as contact allergy, asthma, leukemia, cancer, and brain/neuron disorders. Formaldehyde is a ubiquitous chemical owing to its use in many common products, including as a preservative in household and personal care products. To prevent overexposure to formaldehyde, a simple method for determining and controlling the formaldehyde content in commercial products is required. In this study, 3-aminoquinoline (3-AQ) was used to derivatize formaldehyde under mild conditions (2 min at 30°C) without the use of catalysts or activators. The derivatized sample solutions were separated using narrow-bore liquid chromatography with an ultraviolet (UV) detector in a run time of only 5 min. All sample extraction and derivatization protocols were performed on the microliter scale to reduce the use of organic solvents. The linear range for the determination was 5–1000 μg/mL, with a detection limit of approximately 1 μg/mL ( 2 ng per 2 μL injection). The proposed microscale method was successfully applied to the analysis of formaldehyde in commercial household products.

Abstract:Adverse impacts of exposure to formaldehyde on human health significantly increases attention in monitoring formaldehyde concentrations in the air. Conventional formaldehyde detection methods typically rely on large and costly instruments and requires high skills of expertise, preventing it from being widely accessible to civilians. This study introduced a novel approach utilizing smartphone-based colorimetric analysis. Changes of green channel signals of digital images by a smartphone successfully capture variation of purple color of 4-amino-3-hydrazino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazol solution, which is proportional to formaldehyde concentrations. It is because that green and purple are complimentary color pairs. A calibration curve was established between green channel signals and formaldehyde concentrations, with a correlation coefficient of 0.98. Detection limit of the smartphone-based method is 0.008 mg/m 3 . Measurement errors decrease as formaldehyde concentrations increase, with median relative errors of 34%, 17%, and 6% for concentration ranges of 0–0.06 mg/m 3 , 0.06–0.12 mg/m 3 , and 0.12–0.35 mg/m 3 , respectively. This method replaced scientific instrumentation with ordinary items, greatly reducing cost and operation bars. It would provide an opportunity to realize onsite measurements for formaldehyde by occupants themselves and increase awareness of air quality for better health protection.

Abstract:Due to endogenous existence and hazardous properties, the quantification of fatty and aromatic aldehydes in food matrices is indispensable to food safety. Current analytical methodologies for aldehydes in food suffer from several drawbacks (typically complicated pretreatment, long analysis time and low analytical throughput, low sensitivity, etc.). In this work, a highly sensitive, high-throughput and sample pretreatment-free method for aldehyde analysis was developed to address the above problems, where in situ extraction and derivatization of aldehydes with hydrazines to hydrazones were integrated into reactive paper spray ionization mass spectrometry (reactive PSI-MS) considering weakly ionizable properties of aldehydes. Four aldehydes, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde and benzaldehyde were reacted with dansyl hydrazine in 1.5 % v/v HAc acidified methanol on the qualitative fast-speed filter paper for 5 min, and then a voltage (+4 kV) was applied to initiate paper spray for mass spectrometry detection with internal calibration by dansyl amide. Once the completion of MS analysis, the glass plate was moved to introduce the second triangular tip towards the MS inlet (5 mm apart) for next trial, achieving high-throughput reactive PSI-MS analysis (60 h(-1)). The four aldehydes showed good linearity in the concentration range from 2 to 150 mu M with low detection limits of 0.03-0.15 mu M. The method was applied to direct quantification of four aldehydes in 15 kinds of foods such as vegetables, fruits and meat products. The proposed method has the advantages of simple operation, high efficiency and high sensitivity, making it attractive to routine analysis of aldehydes in food, environmental and biological samples.
Laboratory Performance Evaluation of a Low-Cost Electrochemical Formaldehyde Sensor

Abstract:Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen and an important indoor and outdoor air pollutant. However, current strategies for formaldehyde measurement, such as chromatographic and optical techniques, are expensive and labor intensive. Low-cost gas sensors have been emerging to provide effective measurement of air pollutants. In this study, we evaluated eight low-cost electrochemical formaldehyde sensors (SFA30, Sensirion®, Staefa, Switzerland) in the laboratory with a broadband cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy as the reference instrument. As a group, the sensors exhibited good linearity of response (R2 > 0.95), low limit of detection (11.3 ± 2.07 ppb), good accuracy (3.96 ± 0.33 ppb and 6.2 ± 0.3% N), acceptable repeatability (3.46% averaged coefficient of variation), reasonably fast response (131-439 s) and moderate inter-sensor variability (0.551 intraclass correlation coefficient) over the formaldehyde concentration range of 0-76 ppb. We also systematically investigated the effects of temperature and relative humidity on sensor response, and the results showed that formaldehyde concentration was the most important contributor to sensor response, followed by temperature, and relative humidity. The results suggest the feasibility of using this low-cost electrochemical sensor to measure formaldehyde concentrations at relevant concentration ranges in indoor and outdoor environments.
Seasonal and diurnal patterns of outdoor formaldehyde and impacts on indoor environments and health

Abstract:Formaldehyde is concerned as an important indoor carcinogen. While contribution of outdoor formaldehyde to indoor concentration is recognized, long-term measurement about its impact on indoor environments remain missing. We measured both outdoor and indoor formaldehyde concentrations for over one year in Nanjing (east-central China) and calculated the outdoor/indoor (O/I) ratios. 64.8% of the measured outdoor concentration have exceeded the chronic reference exposure criteria of 0.009 mg/m3 set by Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA). The outdoor concentration was highest in summer with median value of 0.020 mg/m3 and lowest in spring with median value of 0.009 mg/m3. Diurnally, outdoor formaldehyde concentration was highest at noon with median value of 0.013 mg/m3 and lowest at night with median value of 0.01 mg/m3. Health analysis revealed that cancer risk by exposure to this concentration level is 1.6 × 10-4, higher than threshold limit of 10-6. In addition, the median O/I ratios are 0.18 and 0.27 in two offices, indicating that outdoor formaldehyde contributes to indoor concentrations by about one quarter. The change of O/I ratio also shows a similar seasonal and diurnal trend as outdoor concentrations (highest in the summer in a year and at noon in a day). Outdoor formaldehyde concentration is therefore not negligible as a contributor to indoor concentration, especially as indoor concentration limit gets continuously lowered. This factor should be taken into account in indoor air quality design and maintenance.

Abstract:Formaldehyde is a commonly observed indoor air contaminant with proved health effects. For the control of indoor formaldehyde, quick methods applicable in actual buildings are needed to identify the emission sources and estimate overall emission rates. The concentration decay and increase patterns with windows open or closed must also be studied to devise control strategy guidelines for natural ventilation in buildings. In this paper, a quick and easy-to-use method was introduced to identify the emission sources and estimate the overall emission rate resulting from all the emission sources. The method was applied to an apartment unit with multiple formaldehyde sources and showed promising applicability. The formaldehyde concentration decay patterns with different window opening degrees were measured and compared with the concentration increase patterns with closed windows. The results confirmed that natural ventilation through window opening can quickly remove indoor contaminants, and that the time scale of formaldehyde concentration increase is much bigger than that of decay patterns. The results imply that in control of indoor contaminant, natural intermittent ventilation by opening and closing windows is applicable.

Abstract:Exposure to formaldehyde causes a variety of adverse health outcomes, while the distributions of indoor formaldehyde in different building types are still not clear in China. In this study, based on the systematic review of previously published data and Monte Carlo simulation, we assessed geographical and temporal distributions of indoor formaldehyde concentrations in residences, schools, and offices across China. A total of 397 studies covered 34 provincial-level regions since 1986 were collected. The results showed that indoor formaldehyde concentrations in residences, schools, and offices in nationwide were decreasing over years due to the publishment of indoor air quality standards since 2002. During 2011 to 2015, the median concentrations of indoor formaldehyde in newly renovated residences, schools, and offices were 153 mu g/m(3), 163 mu g/m(3), and 94 mu g/m(3), with an exceeding rate of 82%, 46%, and 91% considering a standard threshold of 100 mu g/m(3) at that time, while the exceeding rate was less than 5% for buildings that were renovated beyond one year. Our findings release the temporal trends and geographic distributions of indoor formaldehyde concentrations in residences, schools, and offices in China in the past 30 years, and provide basic data for the comprehensive evaluation of disease burden attributable to indoor formaldehyde exposure.

Chemical methods, such as photocatalytic oxidation using titanium dioxide and plasma technology, are analyzed for their ability to decompose formaldehyde into non-toxic substances. Additionally, biological methods involving plant purification and microbial transformation are explored for their eco-friendly and sustainable removal capabilities. The paper concludes that while each method has its merits, a combined approach may offer the most effective solution for reducing indoor formaldehyde levels. The study underscores the need for further research to integrate these methods in a practical, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable manner, highlighting their potential to improve indoor air quality significantly.

Abstract:Formaldehyde, a common indoor air pollutant, may have adverse effects on human health. The detection of formaldehyde is vital for assessing personal exposure risks. In this study, a method for indoor gaseous formaldehyde detection was developed based on the derivatization of formaldehyde by magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-supported 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine (DNPH) and analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. The method exhibited high derivatization efficiency due to the immobilized DNPH and rapid separation of derivatives and impurities due to the magnetic solid material. The optimal analysis conditions were 30 min for the derivatization reaction time and 35 °C for the derivatization reaction temperature in an acidic reaction medium. Under these conditions, the linear range for the proposed formaldehyde detection method was from 0.01 to 5.00 mg/L, and the detection limit was 0.005 mg/L. This formaldehyde detection method is advantageous due to its simplicity, sensitivity, linearity, and stability.

Abstract:Formaldehyde is deemed to be an indispensable industrial product that has been widely applied in manufacture of resins, drugs, building materials, etc. It has been widely accepted that, nevertheless, residual formaldehyde will cause pathogen reactions, even leading to cancers like leukemia. Thus, a facile and efficient approach has been designed to achieve the determination of formaldehyde by ultraviolet and visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometry in liquid media. In detail, O-(carboxymethyl) hydroxylamine (C2H5NO3·0.5HCl) is chosen as the detection reagent for the specific recognition of formaldehyde on account of its unique aminooxy (-O-NH2) which can react with formaldehyde to form oxime bonds (O-NCH2), accompanied with the only by-product of H2O. Likewise, this simple and sensitive detection approach based on the chemical detection reagent C2H5NO3·0.5HCl can also be applied to the determination of other aldehyde homologs with carbonyl groups including acetaldehyde, acetone, benzaldehyde, 1, 4-phthalaldehyde. As a result, all the UV absorbances of analytes display remarkable linear detection relationships. The limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantitation (LOQ) values are in the range of 0.03-1.16 ppm and 0.03-5.81 ppm respectively, with RSDs of 3.27-3.75 %, evidencing the feasibility of our method to determine formaldehyde and its homologs by UV-vis spectrophotometry and auspicious prospects of practical applications.
