Abstract:The site occupancy, lattice misfit and elastic modulus of Ni-based single crystal superalloys are investigated by combining the first principles exact muffin-tin orbital method and coherent-potential approximation. The site preference of alloying elements in gamma'-Ni3Al can be classified into four types: Co, Fe, Ru and Ir occupy Ni site or Cr, Mo, Re, Ti, V occupy Al anti-site (namely alloying elements occupy Al site while the removed Al occupy Ni site). Ti and V are the alloying elements which stabilize the gamma'-Ni3Al. The lattice misfit and the difference of elastic properties between gamma and gamma' phases are the causes of gamma' rafting, while the alloying elements will improve the differences. The effects of 1 at. % similar to 5 at. % alloying elements on lattice constant and misfit are studied, because of biggish atomic radius, Ir, Mo, Ti, Re and Ru increase the lattice constant of gamma/gamma' phase much faster, and the alloying elements have some impacts on the lattice misfit of gamma/gamma' phase. Re is the most remarkable alloying element which improves the elastic modulus of Ni-based superalloys.
Theoretical Calculations of the Ideal Strength of Ni, NiAl and Ni3Al in Tension and Shear

Abstract:We have applied the first-principles method to Ni, NiAl and Ni3Al to calculate tensile deformation in the [100], [110] and [111] directions and shear deformation in the {111}[11 (2) over bar] and {111}[1 (1) over bar0] slip directions. The tensile and shear stress-strain exhibit a very different anisotropy in consideration of crystallographic directions. The ideal tensile strength (ITS) sigma(max )of Ni, NiAl and Ni3Al in the [100] tensile directions is the largest with the values of 35.63, 35.19 and 38.05 GPa, respectively, followed by the [111] and [110] directions, illuminating that NiAl in this direction is the most difficult to occur tensile fracture and it has the best ductility with a strain of 0.60. The ideal shear strength (ISS) tau(max) of Ni, NiAl and Ni3Al in the {111}[1 (1) over bar0] slip directions is 5.94, 4.55 and 11.35 GPa, respectively, which is larger than that of {111}[11 (2) over bar] slip directions except NiAl. Furthermore, the tau(max )of NiAl along the {111}[11 (2) over bar] slip directions is 22.15 GPa which is the most difficult to produce cleavage fracture in considered phases and directions. Finally, the evolution of lattice parameters, energy, volume, density of states, Bader charge transfer and difference charge density are investigated to clarify the nature of the bonding and intrinsic yielding mechanism.
Transition-metal Alloying of Γ′−ni3al : Effects on the Ideal Uniaxial Compressive Strength from First-Principles Calculations

Abstract:The addition of transition-metal (TM) elements into the gamma' precipitate phase of a Ni-based single-crystal superalloy can significantly affect its mechanical properties, including the intrinsic mechanical property of compressive strength. Using first-principles density functional calculations, the effects of 3d (Sc-Zn), Ad (Y-Cd), and 5d (Hf-Au) TM alloying elements on the ideal uniaxial compressive strength of gamma'-Ni3Al were investigated. The stress-strain relationships of pure Ni3Al under [100], [110], and [111] compressive loads and the site occupancy behavior of TM elements in Ni3Al were previously studied using a total-energy method based on density functional theory. Our results showed that the capacity of TM elements for strengthening the ideal compressive strength was associated with the d-electron number. The alloying elements with half-filled d bands (i.e., Cr, Mo, W, Tc, and Re) manifested the greatest efficacy for improving the ideal strength of Ni3Al under a deformation along the weakest compressive direction. Furthermore, the charge redistribution of Ni3Al doped with 5d elements were also analyzed to understand the strengthening mechanisms of TM elements in the gamma'-Ni3Al phase.

Results for the stress-strain relationships, ideal tensile and shear strengthes with and without Re addition are presented and explained. Dependence of Mechanical Properties on the Site Occupancy of Ternary Alloying Elements in Γ'-Ni3al: Ab Initio Description for Shear and Tensile Deformation

Abstract:The site occupancy behavior of ternary alloying elements in γ′-Ni3Al (a key strengthening phase of commercial Ni-based single-crystal superalloys) can change with temperature and alloy composition owing to the effect of entropy. Using a total-energy method based on density functional theory, the dependence of tensile and shear behaviors on the site preference of alloying elements in γ′-Ni3Al were investigated in detail. Our results demonstrate that Fe, Ru, and Ir can significantly improve the ideal tensile and shear strength of the γ′ phase when occupying the Al site, with Ru resulting in the strongest enhancement. In contrast, elements with fully filled d orbitals (i.e., Cu, Zn, Ag, and Cd) are expected to reduce the ideal tensile and shear strength. The calculated stress–strain relationships of Ni3Al alloys indicate that none of the alloying elements can simultaneously increase the ideal strength of the γ′ phase for both Ni1-site and Ni2-site substitutions. In addition, the charge redistribution and the bond length of the alloying elements and host atoms during the tensile and shear processes are analyzed to unveil the underlying electronic mechanisms.

Abstract:When doped with transition-metal (TM) elements, modern commercial Ni-based superalloys achieve an extraordinary mechanical performance, including elastic behaviors and shear strength. By using density functional theory, the TM-element (3d:Sc–Zn, 4d:Y–Cd, 5d:Hf–Au) dependence of the elastic properties and the ideal shear strength of γ′-Ni3Al were determined. According to the positive definiteness requirement of the elastic stiffness coefficients matrix, we present the necessary and sufficient mechanical stability in terms of Born criteria for a monoclinic crystal system. By examining the mechanical stability and calculating the stress–strain curve at every single strain, the shear behavior of pure Ni3Al in the weakest shear-slip system was investigated in detail. Our results show that the d-orbital occupancy of TM elements can affect the mechanical properties of the γ′ phase significantly when they occupy the Al site in Ni3Al, where the elements toward the center part of each series (e.g. V, Cr, Mn, Nb, Mo, Ru, Ta, W, Re, and Os) can enhance the elastic constants, elastic moduli, and shear strength. Elements at the beginnings and ends of the series (such as Cu, Zn, Y, Ag, Cd, and Au) will decrease the elastic properties and shear strength of γ′-Ni3Al.

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations, we study the effects of the alloying elements Re, Ta, W, Ru and Ti on the generalized stacking fault energies, strength and ductility of gamma'-Ni3Al. The element Re effectively increases three kinds of generalized stacking fault energies on the (1 1 1) plane inducing more strength and less ductility of Ni3Al than the other elements. Abstract:The ideal strength of a material, which provides an upper limit of stress before the material fails, can provide information crucial to understanding the mechanical properties of real materials. The effects of boron and carbon on the ideal tensile strength (sigma(IT)) of both Ni solution and Ni3Al intermetallics along the [0 0 1], [1 1 0], and [1 1 1] directions were investigated by using the first-principles method. Based on the stress-strain relationships, sigma(IT) and critical strain (epsilon(C)) of non-doped and doped systems in the [1 1 0] direction were far smaller than those in the [0 0 1] and [1 1 1] directions. Moreover, due to the anisotropy of the crystals therein, these two elements had different influences on sigma(IT) and eC of Ni and Ni3Al in three specific crystal directions. Boron and carbon increased sigma(IT) in Ni and Ni3Al in the [1 1 0] direction and the addition of boron increased epsilon(C) of Ni and Ni3Al in the [1 1 0] direction by 12.5% and 25%, respectively. Furthermore, the nature of the bonding of these two elements with host atoms, lattice evolution, and charge redistribution in the tensile process were analysed. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. The Effects of Combining Alloying Elements on the Elastic Properties of Γ -Ni in Ni-based Superalloy: High-throughput First-Principles Calculations

Abstract:Using high-throughput first-principles calculations, we systematically studied the synergistic effect of alloying two elements (Al and 28 kinds of 3d, 4d, and 5d transition metals) on the elastic constants and elastic moduli of gamma-Ni. We used machine learning to theoretically predict the relationship between alloying concentration and mechanical properties, giving the binding energy between the two elements. We found that the ternary alloying elements strengthened the gamma phase in the order of Re > Ir > W > Ru > Cr > Mo > Pt > Ta > Co. There is a quadratic parabolic relationship between the number of d shell electrons in the alloying element and the bulk modulus, and the maximum bulk modulus appears when the d shell is half full. We found a linear relationship between bulk modulus and alloying concentration over a certain alloying range. Using linear regression, we found the linear fit concentration coefficient of 29 elements. Using machine learning to theoretically predict the bulk modulus and lattice constants of Ni32XY, we predicted values close to the calculated results, with a regression parameter of R-2 = 0.99626. Compared with pure Ni, the alloyed Ni has higher bulk modulus B, G, E, C-11, and C-44, but equal C-12. The alloying strengthening in some of these systems is closely tied to the binding of elements, indicating that the binding energy of the alloy is a way to assess its elastic properties.
Influence of Alloying Elements Upon the Theoretical Tensile Strength of Ni-based Model Superalloy: Γ-Ni/γ′-ni3al Multilayer

Abstract:The theoretical tensile strength of Ni-based model superalloys was investigated by density functional theory calculations. The superalloy was modeled as a γ-Ni/γ′-Ni3Al multilayer, and the strengthening effect induced by alloying elements X (X=Re, Ru, Cr, Mo, W, or Ta) close to the γ/γ′ interface was investigated. Theoretical calculations show that the tensile strength of the model superalloy is ∼1GPa higher than that of the γ′-Ni3Al phase, although the critical strain is ∼38% lower than that of the pure γ′-Ni3Al phase. Except for Ta, doping at the Al site of the γ-Ni/γ′-Ni3Al interface significantly increases the theoretical tensile strength (>7%) or critical strain (>10%) of the γ-Ni/γ′-Ni3Al multilayer. Local atomic disorder is observed in the Ni–Al sublayer of the γ′-Ni3Al block of the superalloy, wherein the Ni–Al atomic layer decomposes into an Al layer and a Ni layer when the strain exceeds a critical value. The charge density difference and partial density of states provide further insight into the changes of chemical bonds and charge redistribution during the tensile process. Charge transfer from Al to Ni in the γ′-Ni3Al precipitate of the superalloy could account for its higher tensile strength than the single γ′ phase. Moreover, covalent-like Ni–X bonds inhibit deformation of the system, resulting in tensile strengthening of doped γ-Ni/γ′-Ni3Al multilayers.

Abstract:Nanostructured Cu–Ni alloys have become the focus of public attention due to their better corrosion resistance and high hardness in experimental measurements. First-principles calculation based on the density functional theory (DFT) has been confirmed as an effective tool and used to illustrate the mechanical properties of these alloys. In this paper, the DFT has been employed to calculate the mechanical properties of Cu–Ni alloys, including bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus, anisotropic index, Poisson's ratio, average velocity, and B/G. We find that the Ni-rich Cu–Ni alloys have relatively higher mechanical parameters, and the Cu-rich alloys have smaller mechanical parameters, which is consistent with previous experiments. This provides an idea for us to design alloys to improve alloy strength.

Comprehensive ab initio study of effects of alloying elements on generalized stacking fault energies of Ni and Ni$_3$Al

Abstract:Excellent high-temperature mechanical properties of Ni-based single crystal superalloys (NSCSs) are attributed to the yield strength anomaly of Ni$_{3}$Al that is intimately related to generalized stacking fault energies (GSFEs). Therefore, clarifying the effects of alloying elements on the GSFEs is of great significance for alloys design. Here, by means of ab initio density functional theory calculations, we systematically calculated the GSFEs of different slip systems of Ni and Ni$_{3}$Al without and with alloying elements using the alias shear method. We obtained that for Ni, except for magnetic elements Mn, Fe, and Co, most of alloying elements decrease the unstable stacking fault energy ($\gamma_{usf}$) of the $[01\bar{1}](111)$ and $[11\bar{2}](111)$ slip systems and also decrease the stable stacking fault energy ($\gamma_{sf}$) of the $[11\bar{2}](111)$ slip system. For Ni$_{3}$Al, most of alloying elements in groups IIIB-VIIB show a strong Al site preference. Except for Mn and Fe, the elements in groups VB-VIIB and the first column of group VIII increase the values of $\gamma_{usf}$ of different slip systems of Ni$_{3}$Al. On the other hand, the elements in groups IIIB-VIIB also increase the value of $\gamma_{sf}$. We found that Re is an excellent strengthening alloying element that significantly increases the slip barrier of the tailing slip process for Ni, and also enhances the slip barrier of the leading slip process of three slip systems for Ni$_{3}$Al. W and Mo exhibit similar effects as Re. We predicted that Os, Ru, and Ir are good strengthening alloying elements as well, since they show the strengthening effects on both the leading and tailing slip process for Ni and Ni$_{3}$Al.

Density functional theory study of the thermodynamic and elastic properties of Ni-based superalloys

Abstract:The thermophysical properties of Ni-based single-crystal superalloys were investigated using first-principles calculations combined with the quasiharmonic approximation. The effect of alloying elements X (X = Re, Ru, Ta, W, Mo, Cr, and Co) on the thermophysical properties of the γ-Ni and γ'-Ni3Al phases was investigated. The calculations showed that alloying can effectively adjust the lattice misfit between the two phases, and Cr can suppress lattice misfit and may improve the creep resistance of alloys. At 0 K, doping with refractory elements leads to tetragonal shear softening of the γ-Ni phase. For γ-Ni, Re, Ru, Cr, and Co slightly increase c44, while Mo, W, and Ta decrease c44. Importantly, high-temperature relative hardening was found to occur close to the service temperature of the superalloy, at which Ru and Cr increase c' and Mo and W increase c44 of γ-Ni. For the γ'-Ni3Al phase, all of the alloying elements except Co considerably increase c' and c44. Re and W at the Al site were found to most effectively harden the γ'-Ni3Al phase. The thermophysical and elastic properties were fully understood by analysis of the electronic structures and phonon spectra. It was found that the electronic density of states (DOS) can account for elastic hardening due to alloying. The phonon spectra along with electronic DOS analysis showed that alloying not only strengthens the first nearest neighbor Ni-X bond through additional d-d hybridization, but it is also important for stiffening the second nearest neighbor Al-X bonding through p-band filling.
Alloying-element Dependence of Structural, Elastic and Electronic Properties of Nickel-Based Superalloys: Influence of Γ’ Volume Fraction

Abstract:First-principles calculations are carried out to investigate the structural, elastic, and electronic properties of nickel-based model superalloys. The effects of alloying element X (where X = Hf, Ta, Mo, W, Cr, Re, Ru, or Co) on the mechanical characteristics of Ni/Ni3Al ternary multilayer structures are obtained and discussed. The γ’-volume-fraction dependence of mechanical performance is studied in detail for the first time and the calculated elastic parameters are in good agreement with experimental results at room temperature. The influence of alloying elements on bulk modulus is almost independent of γ’ volume fraction. While the effects of alloying elements on shear modulus, Young’s modulus, the ductile and brittle behavior, some particular orientation-dependent elastic moduli and Zener anisotropy factor are closely related to γ’ volume fraction. Alloying additions increase the Young’s and shear moduli, reduce the ductility and lower the anisotropy performance, but the degree of influence on these properties varies with γ’ volume fraction. Among the three γ’ volume fractions investigated in this work, nickel-based ternary model superalloys with 60% γ’ volume fraction have significant improvement in Young’s and shear moduli and thus possess the best comprehensive elastic performance. Furthermore, covalent-like bonding between alloying dopants and host atoms and strong X d- Ni d hybridization account for the superior elastic properties of superalloys with alloying additions. Alloying dopants and Ni atoms from the interface and two phases share a DOS peak just below the Fermi level, and this additional d-d hybridization leads to the exceptional mechanical performance of superalloys with 60% γ’ volume fraction.
The effect of chromium additions on the mechanical properties of Ni-25Al-27.5Fe-based intermetallic compounds

Abstract:To further improve room temperature ductility of alloys based on Ni-25Al-27.5Fe, alloys containing additional chromium were prepared by arc-melting and drop-casting into ingots. The mechanical properties of those alloys were characterized by means of hardness testing and tensile testing. The microstructural evolution of these alloys was examined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results reveal that two phases, γ′ and β′ phases, exist in these casting alloys. The dendritic β′ phase mixed with the interdendritic of the β′ and γ′ phases in as-cast alloys. After annealing at 1000 °C for 4 h, the ordered γ′ phase transformed to a disordered γ phase, and a large number of γ phase particles were precipitated from the β′ phase. These precipitates have almost the same chemical composition and lattice constant as the interdendritic γ phase. The γ phase contained higher iron and chromium concentrations when compared with the β′ phase. The chemical compositions of the β′ phases in both dendrite and interdendrite appear to be almost the same. Increasing chromium content in this alloy system results in increasing the hardness and elongation, but decreasing the yield strength; for example an alloy with 1 at.% chromium had 1230 MPa of ultimate strength, 484 MPa of yield strength and 11.3% of elongation.

Abstract:The tensile mechanical properties of Ni/Ni3Al were simulated by molecular dynamics. First, the effect of the content of gamma' strengthening phase on the tensile mechanical properties of Ni/Ni3Al was studied at room temperature and constant strain rate. The microstructure evolution of Ni/Ni3Al under the content of gamma' strengthening phase with three typical characteristics was especially investigated. Compared with single crystal Ni, it is found that the gamma' strengthening phase can increase the tensile strength of Ni/Ni3Al. This is because during the plastic deformation process, as the dislocations continue to multiply, the dislocation density gradually increases, resulting in dislocation plugging, which increases the resistance to dislocation movement, thereby increasing the tensile strength. Secondly, the effect of temperature on the tensile mechanical properties of Ni/Ni3Al was studied, and it is found that the tensile strength of Ni/Ni3Al decreases with increasing temperature. This is because as the increasing temperature, the internal kinetic energy of the atom increases, resulting in the more intense thermal motion of the atoms, and the weaker bonding force between the atoms. The atoms leaving the equilibrium position have no time to return to the equilibrium position, and the fcc structures transform into a large number of hcp structures and other atomic arrangements, which cause lattice distortion and reduce tensile strength. Finally, the effect of strain rate on the tensile mechanical properties of Ni/Ni3Al was studied. The results show that the tensile strength is not sensitive to low strain rate, but sensitive to high strain rate.

Abstract:The influence of refractory additions on tensile deformation behavior has been studied at an intermediate temperature (760°C) using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Tensile experiments revealed that elemental additions of tantalum (Ta), tungsten (W), and rhenium (Re) could improve the yield strength (YS) of the model alloys with an order of YS(Ni-Al-W) > YS(Ni-Al-Ta) > YS(Ni-Al-Re) > YS(Ni-Al). During the plastic deformation of model alloys at the intermediate temperature, the deformation via Orowan bypassing and shear could be activated synergistically. The changes of anti-phase boundary (APB) energies on {001} and {111} planes are related to the cross-slip driving force, critical resolved shear stress and stage II work hardening rate in γ' precipitates. The effects of γ' size and refractory additions (Ta, W, and Re) on the yield strength of model alloys at intermediate temperature are also discussed, which can provide qualitative reference for alloy design.

Abstract:Mechanical properties of Ni-based superalloys strongly depend on phase and site preferences of alloying elements which influence bonding strength within γ′-Ni3Al precipitates and microstructural characteristics of these unique class of materials. In the current work, therefore, besides disclosure of the phase partitioning behaviours of alloying X elements (i.e. X = Co, Cr, Nb, Ta or Ti) among γ′ and γ phases, their site occupancy tendencies in γ′ precipitates (determined via first-principles ab initio calculations at 0 K) and effects on the microstructural evolution of Ni80Al15X5 alloy systems (exposed to aging at 800 °C for 4, 16, 64 and 256 h, respectively) have been examined. Bonding features of Ni-Al, Ni-X and Al-X atomic pairs within Ni3Al-X intermetallics have been simulated by utilizing charge density difference (CDD) method, which reveals site preferences of alloying X elements as well. Present theoretical and experimental investigations have shown that mechanical strength of Ni-based superalloys is predominantly affected by bonding properties within γ′ precipitates. As atomic radii of alloying X elements become closer to that of Al atom, energy change parameter, E N i → A l X , values decrease and more Al sublattice sites are preferentially occupied in γ′ precipitates. Correspondingly, bonding strength of Ni-X atomic pairs along <110> directions of Ni3Al-X phases and micro-hardness properties of both as-cast and pre-aged Ni80Al15X5 alloy systems enhance in the order of X = Co < Cr < Ti < Nb < Ta additions. Nevertheless, with increasing aging time, mechanical strength of alloys weakens in parallel with increasing size of γ′ precipitates simultaneously evolved from near-spherical to irregular forms.

Abstract:Using a total-energy method based on the density functional theory (DFT), the strengthening effects of Mo, Ta, W, and Re on the ideal uniaxial compressive strength (<math>σICS</math>) and elastic properties of Ni-based single-crystal (NBSC) superalloys were systematically investigated using a model consisting of γ/γ′ multilayers. The ability of the ternary alloying elements to enhance <math>σICS</math>, the elastic constants, and elastic modulus were in the order: Re > W > Mo > Ta. Our calculated elastic properties were consistent with reported experimental results for commercial superalloys (e.g., CMSX-4 and TMS-26), as well as with other reported computational results. Furthermore, the charge density difference of the γ/γ′ ternary alloys during compressive deformation were analyzed to understand the strengthening mechanisms of the alloying elements. The mechanical properties of the γ/γ′ ternary model alloys were predicted by modifying the first-order rule of mixtures (ROM) with the alloying element concentrations, and the determined values were in close agreement with the results of the first-principles calculations.

Abstract:The effects of alloying elements Re, Ru, Ta, Ti, and W on the activation enthalpy of dislocation cross-slip in gamma'-Ni3Al are studied combining density functional theory calculations with the classical theory of dislocations. The elements Re and Ware found to effectively increase planar fault energies on the (111) plane and decrease the cross-slip activation enthalpy in Ni3Al. The reduction of activation enthalpy will increase the probabilities of cross-slipping and forming sessile dislocation locks. Therefore, Re and W can inhibit the further motion of dislocations and raise the flow stress of Ni3Al in the anomalous temperature regime. The underlying electronic mechanism is the strong bonding of Re-Ni and W-Ni and the weak bonding of Re-Al and W-Al in fault areas.
