Abstract:In this study, calcium sulfate whisker (CSW) was modified with a newly synthesized polyether titanate coupling agent (eTi4000) and four commercial coupling agents, including two silane coupling agents (KH560 and KH570) and two titanate coupling agents (KR38S and KR138S), respectively, and then the modified calcium whisker (mCSW) was incorporated into poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) by melt blending to prepare mCSW/PVC composites. The morphologies, mechanical properties and thermal stability of these mCSW/PVC composites were compared. The results reveal that the four commercial coupling agents have slightly better reinforcing effect, while eTi4000 shows much better toughening effect. Moreover, the mCSW/PVC composite modified by eTi4000 shows higher storage modulus than those modified by commercial coupling agents in dynamic stress mode. The energy dissipation mechanism of these mCSW/PVC composites during the impact process was analyzed, and their interfacial interactions were evaluated quantitatively by the damping ratio. The mCSW/PVC composite modified by eTi4000 exhibits better thermal stability than their counterparts modified by the commercial coupling agents. Generally, eTi4000 is an effective coupling agent for CSW, and it can endow mCSW/PVC composites with better balanced properties.

Abstract:A new titanate coupling agent synthesized from polyethylene glycol (PEG), isooctyl alcohol, and phosphorus pentoxide (P₂O₅) was used for the modification of calcium sulfate whiskers (CSWs) and the preparation of high-performance CSW/poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) composites. The titanate coupling agent (sTi) and the modified CSWs (sTi-CSW) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and the mechanical, dynamic mechanical, and heat resistant properties and thermostability of sTi-CSW/PVC and CSW/PVC composites were compared. The results show that sTi-CSW/PVC composite with 10 wt. % whisker content has the best performance, and its tensile strength, Young's modulus, elongation at break, break strength, and impact strength are 67.2 MPa, 1926 MPa, 233%, 51.1 MPa, and 12.75 KJ·m-2, with an increase of 20.9%, 11.5%, 145.3%, 24.6%, and 65.4% compared to that of CSW/PVC composite at the same whisker content. As the whisker content increases, the storage modulus increases, the Vicat softening temperature decreases slightly, and the glass transition temperature increases at first and then decreases.

Abstract:Calcium sulfate whiskers (CSWs) modified with glutaraldehyde-crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) or traditional surface modifiers, including silane coupling agent, titanate coupling agent and stearic acid, were used to strengthen poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), and the morphologies, mechanical and heat resistant properties of the resulting composites were compared. The results clearly show that glutaraldehyde cross-linked PVA modified CSW/PVC composite (cPVA@CSW/PVC) has the strongest interfacial interaction, good and stable mechanical and heat resistant properties. Nielsen's modified Kerner's equation for Young's modulus is better than other models examined for the CSW/PVC composites. The half debonding angle theta of cPVA@CSW/PVC composite is lower than that of other composites except silane coupling agent modified CSW/PVC composites, indicating a very strong interfacial adhesion between cPVA@CSW and PVC. Study on Preparation and Properties of Modified Calcium Sulfate Whisker Filled PP/EPDM Composite

Abstract:The modified calcium sulfate whisker(OCSW) was obtained by surface treating the calcium sulfate whisker(CSW) with titanate coupling agent,then the polypropylene(PP)/ethylenepropylene-diene monomer(EPDM)/OCSW ternary composite was prepared by melt extrusion.The structures of OCSW and the PP/EPDM/OCSW composite were characterized by infrared spectroscopy(IR) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).Meanwhile,the mechanical and friction properties of the composite were studied.The results show that:organic-functional group has emerged on the surface of CSW,and the modified CSW can be uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix.With the increase of OCSW content,the impact strength of the PP/EPDM/OCSW composite decreases,while the tensile strength increases first and then decreases,and the tensile strength reaches the maximum when the OCSW content is 15%.Moreover,the introduction of OCSW improves the wear resistance of PP/EPDM composite.With the increase of OCSW content,the friction coefficient of the composite decreases,and the abrasion loss decreases at first and then increases.

Abstract:Dodecyl sulfonate-pillared hydrotalcite (HT-SDS) w as prepared through ion-exchange reaction, which was blended with PVC to prepare composites via both melting mixing and in situ suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride. TEM micrographs showed that the sizes of most hydrotalcite particles were greater than 100 nm in the composites prepared via melting mixing, while less than 100 nm and disperse d homogeneously via in situ polymerization, due to being exfoliated. The thermal stability of PVC composites improved with increasing HT-SDS contents. The compo s ites prepared via in situ polymerization possessed higher modulus, tensile and impact strengths than those of via melt mixing.

Abstract:A novel technique is developed in this study to modify the surface of calcium sulfate whisker (CSW) for the preparation of high-performance CSW/poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) composites. The CSW coated with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and then cross-linked by glutaraldehyde is used to strengthen PVC, and the surface morphology and mechanical properties of CSW/PVC composites are investigated. It shows that the mechanical properties of the cross-linked PVA modified CSW/PVC (cPVA@CSW/PVC) composites are significantly improved, their yield strength, breaking strength, tensile modulus and elongation at break are 65.7 MPa, 53.5 MPa, 1772 MPa and 225 %, with an increase of 7.2, 13.1, 7.6 and 8.2 % as compared with that of the unmodified CSW/PVC composites, respectively. The improvement in the mechanical properties can be attributed to the strong interfacial adhesion between cPVA@CSW and PVC matrix, because the modified CSW has abundant hydroxyl groups that can produce a strong interaction with PVC. This method is simple and inexpensive, and can be applied in large scale.

Abstract:In this study, hollow glass microsphere/epoxy composites modified with compound coupling agent of titanate (CS201) and silane (KH540) were prepared and characterized. The addition of the compound coupling agent improves the interfacial bonding between the microbeads and the resin matrix. Scanning electron microscopy results indicated that the compound coupling agent can effectively reduce the number of voids between the microbeads and the resin. FTIR and XPS spectra showed that new chemical bonds were formed between the hollow glass microspheres and resin, which enhanced the interfacial bonding between them. By testing the water absorption and mechanical properties of the composites, it found that the addition of the hybrid coupling agent can reduce the water absorption to a minimum level of 1.184%. Due to the improvement of interfacial compatibility, mechanical properties of the composites were enhanced, (with tensile strength of 43.03 MPa, bending strength of 44.56 MPa, bending modulus of 1407 MPa and compressive strength of 81.55 MPa). When the content of the coupling agent was 5% and the volume ratio of CS201 to KH540 was 1:1, the synergistic enhancement effect was the most significant.

Abstract:Polymeric composites of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and ethylene–vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) with unmodified and modified calcium sulfate whisker (CW and mCW), were prepared through melt compounding method. The surface of CW was modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550), 3-glycidoxypropyltriethoxysilane (KH560), and 3-methacryloxypropyltriethoxysilane (KH570) by a dry process to increase its dispersion into the PDMS/EVA matrix and the compatibility between PDMS and EVA. The surface modification of CW was confirmed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to confirm the presence of various functionalities of the CW/PDMS/EVA and mCW/PDMS/EVA composites. The mechanical properties, thermal stability, morphology, and hydrophobicity of the composites were investigated. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to characterize the thermal performance of the composites. The results showed that the thermal stability of all resultant composites, loaded with CW, is better than those of PDMS/EVA blends. Abstract:This study aims to investigate the effect of calcium sulfate whisker (CSW) on the properties and microstructure of cement-based composites. Further, nanosilica (NS) was used as a comparison. The results show that the compressive strength and fracture toughness of cement-based composites increased by 10.3% and 10.2%, respectively, with 2% CSW. The flexural strength, splitting tensile strength, and fracture energy increased by 79.7, 34.8 and 28.7%, respectively, with 1% CSW. With the addition of CSW, shrinkage deformation was aggravated, and the capillary water absorption coefficients were clearly reduced. Compared with NS, CSW-reinforced cement-based composites show better tensile, flexural, and fracture properties and smaller shrinkage deformations and capillary water absorption coefficients. The residual mechanical properties of all groups improve when the treating temperature is lower than 400 °C and decline rapidly when the temperature goes over 600 °C. When treated at 900 °C, the residual mechanical properties are 40% less than those at ambient temperature, with the NS group showing the best performance, followed by the control group and the CSW group. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests show that the addition of CSW improves the microstructure of the matrix. CSW can reinforce and toughen composites by generating ettringite and whisker pullout, whisker breakage, crack bridging, and crack deflection at the microstructure level.

Abstract:In this study, carbon microspheres (CMSs) were prepared using L(+)-ascorbic acid by hydrothermal carbonization and then modified with a polyether titanate coupling agent (eTi(4000)) and a self-synthesized biopolymer coupling agent (CCS), respectively. These modified CMSs (mCMSs) were added into poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) to prepare mCMSs/PVC composites. The results suggest that CCS has a better modification effect than eTi(4000), which imparts CCS-CMSs/PVC composites with good thermal stability and mechanical properties. The impact strength of CCS-CMSs/PVC composite (8.7 kJ m(-2)) is remarkably increased by 64.2% compared with that of CMSs/PVC composite (5.3 kJ m(-2)), and its rapidest decomposition temperature (309 degrees C) is increased by 29 degrees C and 16 degrees C in comparison with that of PVC and CMSs/PVC composite, respectively. The interfacial interaction between PVC and mCMSs is evaluated by dielectric loss and DMA. In conclusion, CCS is an effective biopolymer coupling agent that can endow CCS-CMSs/PVC composites with good comprehensive properties.

Abstract:In order to enhance the adhesion and compatibility of magnesium hydroxide sulfate hydrate (MHSH) whiskers with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and prepare high performance MHSH/PVC composites, chitosan (CS) is coated on the surface of MHSH whiskers by a facile method. The effect of the CS-coated MHSH (CS-MHSH) whisker and its toughness and reinforcement for PVC are studied. A thin layer coated on the surface of MHSH whiskers after modification is investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The efficacy of surface modification is confirmed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray power diffraction analyses (XRD) and energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS). The optimum modification concentration of CS is 0.025%. The notched impact strength and flexural modulus of PVC composite with 15 phr CS-MHSH whiskers are increased by 85.5% and 58.5% compared with those of pure PVC, and by 48.3% and 4.1% compared with those of the PVC composite with 15 phr unmodified MHSH whiskers. A better thermal stability of CS-MHSH/PVC composite is showed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Abstract:Surface modification of silica micro-powder (SMP) was performed by using commercially available titanate coupling agent KTTO, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) based composites were prepared by melting and blending PVC and processing aids with SMP before and after modification as fillers. Through XRD, FT-IR, XPS, SEM characterizations and contact angle test, it is determined that the surface of SMP was chemically modified by KTTO successfully. The dispersity of SMP was improved after the KTTO modification treatment although no change was found in the crystal structure of SMP. Moreover, excellent hydrophobicity was achieved by a layer of organic molecules on the surface of modified silica micro-powder (mSMP). The static and dynamic mechanical properties, heat resistance, thermal conductivity, and thermal stability of pure PVC, SMP/PVC, and mSMP/PVC composites with respect to cross-sectional micromorphology were compared. The results indicate that KTTO modification treatment effectively improved the mechanical properties of mSMP/PVC composites, especially increasing the tensile strength and notched impact strength by 43% and 36%, respectively. A significant enhancement of the interfacial bonding between the mSMP filler and PVC matrix was also identified. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity and thermal stability of mSMP/PVC composite were improved by the KTTO modification. The mSMP/PVC composite has a potential application in plates and profiles for construction and buildings.

Abstract:Novel methyl vinyl silicone rubber (MVQ)/calcium sulfate whisker (CSW) composites had been prepared. Two types of modification agents, hydrogen silicone oil and silane coupling agent, were used in the preparation of modified calcium sulfate whiskers (MCSW). The morphology and properties of MCSW were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Then, the two types of MCSW were applied in the preparation of MVQ composites. Properties such as cure characteristics, tensile strength, elongation at break, permanent distortion and thermal stability were analysed and compared. Results showed that addition of MCSW could improve the tensile and thermal properties of the silicone rubber composites. A combination of SEM studies was used to characterize the structure and reinforcing mechanism of MCSW.

Abstract:The aggregation of two-dimensional (2D) layered nanofillers restricts their use as reinforcements in polymers. Herein, the bisphenol E cyanate ester resin (CE) nanocomposites based on surface functionalization of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets with polysulfone (PSF) are prepared. In the structures, PSF segment were sandwiched between adjacent MoS2 nanoplatelets, which restrained the restacking of the MoS2 nanoplatelets. The compatibility between PSF modified MoS2 and CE is improved as compared with MoS2 and CE. The tensile strength and apparent shear strength of the nanocomposite show that modified MoS2 nanosheets are very effective at increasing the adhesive and mechanical properties of cyanate esters at very low quality fractions. Pulling out effects, crack bridging, crack deflection, and crack pinning are the main strengthening mechanisms of mechanical properties. The glass transition temperature increases from 245 degrees C for the unfilled cyanate ester to 265 degrees C at 0.15 % MoS2 loading. The results are consistent with the nanoconfinement effect including a nanoscale interfacial layer that can support the effective reinforcements of functionalized MoS2 nanoplatelets over pure MoS2. The excellent properties of MoS2/PSF/CE nanocomposites indicate that the approach in this study is effective to prepare high-performance molybdenum disulfide/cyanate ester polymer composites.
Surface modification of talc powder by silane functionalized polycarboxylates and its effect on the performance of polyvinyl chloride composite

Abstract:Mechanism of talc modified by copolymerization reaction. In this work, modified polycarboxylates were prepared by copolymerizing γ‐Methacryloxy propyl trimethoxyl silane (KH‐570) with acrylic acid and allyl polyoxyethylene ether. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) indicate that silane copolymerized polycarboxylates have been successfully synthesized. The talc powder (TP) modified with synthesized polycarboxylate and modified polycarboxylates was blended with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to prepare composite films. FTIR and x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to determine changes in the surface properties of unmodified and modified TP. The effects of TP and polycarboxylate‐modified TP on the tensile properties, light transmission and moisture transmission of the PVC composite films were investigated. Compared with untreated TP filled PVC film, the PVC composite films filled with organosilicon polycarboxylate‐modified TP exhibit enhanced tensile strength, light transmittance, barrier, and other properties. Especially, the tensile strength of PVC composite film filled with 7 wt% Si0.5‐PCE modified TP is increased by 19.5% and the elongation at break is increased by 21.6%. In addition, the moisture permeability of the composite film is reduced by a maximum of 80.6% compared with the pure PVC film.

Abstract:A calcium sulfate whisker（CSW） coated with glutaraldehyde crosslinked chitosan（GACS） was prepared to reinforce polyvinyl chloride（PVC） in this study. The results show that the optimum concentration of both chitosan（CS） and glutaraldehyde（GA） is 0.05 wt%. The tensile strength, impact strength, flexural modulus and vicat softening temperature of the PVC composite with 12 wt% of modified CSW are increased by 17.5%, 40.4%, 0.8% and 3.8% compared with those of the PVC composite with 12 wt% of unmodified CSW, and by 2.9%, 42.4%, 27.1% and 6.8% compared with those of pure PVC, respectively. The dynamic mechanical analysis results indicate that the modified CSW/PVC composite exhibits much higher storage modulus and glass transition temperature than those of unmodified CSW/PVC composite and pure PVC.In addition, the modified CSW/PVC composite also demonstrates good thermal properties with a high rapidest decomposition temperature（Trpd） and char residue. The scanning electron microscopy images of tensile-fractured surfaces show that the modified CSW has a strong interfacial adhesion with PVC matrix.

Abstract:CaSO4 whiskers (CSW) can be used to reinforce PVC matrix to produce light and strong composites. However, the weak interfacial interaction between the smooth CSW and PVC matrix limited the fabrication of PVC composite with perfect mechanical properties. In this work, CaCO3 nanoparticles were coated on CSW surface by wet modification of CSW in Na2CO3 solution at 80°C, which increased the surface roughness of CSW from 56.8 nm to 115.6 nm. The use of the hierarchical CSW rather than the raw CSW in the fabrication of CSW/PVC composite led to the increase of the flexural strength from 86.3 MPa to 113.2 MPa and the impact strength from 56.7 kJ·m−2 to 82.5 kJ·m−2 owing to the enhanced mechanical interlocking between CSW and PVC matrix.

Abstract:In‐situ polymerization modified calcium sulfate whiskers and their application in PP composites research. Calcium sulfate whiskers (CSW) exhibit significant surface polarity and high surface energy, leading to aggregation when directly incorporated into polymer matrices, significantly affecting the mechanical properties of the composites. Sodium oleate (SO) was used to modify CSW, introducing –C=C– active groups on the surface, followed by in‐situ graft polymerization of sodium oleate‐modified CSW (SO‐CSW) with methyl methacrylate (MMA) to prepare CSW‐g‐PMMA composites. The modification mechanism of SO and PMMA on CSW, as well as the surface modification effects on CSW, were studied using DRIFT, XRD, XPS and TEM. The results show that oleic acid ions adsorb onto the surface of CSW in two forms. One is chemisorption, in which the oleic acid ions are adsorbed on the calcium ions site on the surface of CSW in a bridging way. The other is physical adsorption, oleic acid ions and dissolved calcium ions in the form of precipitation adsorbed on the outermost layer of CSW. After in‐situ polymerization, PMMA was successfully grafted onto the surface of CSW, and the thickness of the surface PMMA coating layer was approximately 67 nm. CSW‐g‐PMMA was used as a filler in the melt blending with polypropylene (PP) to prepare PP composites. CSW‐g‐PMMA mainly toughens and enhances the mechanical properties of PP composites in the form of crack bridging, crack deflection and pull‐out effect. Highlights The mechanism of sodium oleate modified calcium sulfate whisker (CSW) has been investigated. One is chemical adsorption that the oleic acid ions are adsorbed on the calcium ions site on the CSW surface in a bridge way. The other is physical adsorption that oleic acid ions and dissolved calcium ions are adsorbed in the form of precipitation on the outer layer of CSW. After the modification of sodium oleate, the active group –C=C– was introduced on the surface of CSW, and then the PMMA long chain polymer was grafted with an in‐situ polymerization to form a PMMA coating layer with a thickness of about 67 nm, which significantly improved the hydrophobicity of CSW surface. After modification with sodium oleate and PMMA grafting, the modified CSW significantly toughened and enhanced the mechanical properties of PP composites in the form of crack bridging, crack deflection and pull‐out effect.

Abstract:Polycaprolactone (PCL)/calcium sulfate (CS) whisker composites have been fabricated by melt blending and coprecipitation methods respectively. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to observe the microstructure of the composites. The crystallization and thermal properties were characterized by polarized optical microscope (POM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). For composites prepared by melt blending method, experiment results show that average length of the whiskers is shortened. The crystallization perfection of PCL in composites is improved by adding whiskers. The flexural strength increases whereas the impact strength decreases. For composites prepared by coprecipitation method, whisker addition worsens the crystallization perfection of PCL. An improvement of 21% in flexural strength and 22% in impact strength has been achieved for the composite with 15 wt% of whiskers.
