Abstract:A series of novel catalysts with bimetallic Sn-W oxides uniformly dispersed on reduced graphene oxide (denoted as Sn-W/RGO) were successfully prepared via a conventional one-pot hydrothermal method. Interestingly, it was found that the introduction of Sn could significantly improve the catalytic activities compared with single WO3/graphene catalyst for selective oxidation of alcohols using H2O2 without organic solvents and additives. Subsequently, the catalysts were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, Raman, FESEM, EDS, HRTEM, XPS and N-2 adsorption-desorption to investigate the promotional synergistic effect of Sn among catalyst structure, surface properties and catalytic performance. The results revealed that the incorporation of Sn had induced the formation of hexagonal WO3 with dominant exposed (001) and (200) planes, meanwhile, doping Sn could dramatically increase the specific surface area, change the structural properties and enhance the interactions between Sn-W oxides and graphene, which were beneficial to the improvement of catalytic performance. Additionally, reaction parameters (temperature, time, oxidant dosage and catalyst amount) were also explored. Both aryl and alkyl alcohols exhibited high conversion and selectivity to corresponding target products over the catalyst. And delightedly, the robust catalyst could be reused for five times without significant loss in catalytic efficiency. This work demonstrates the promotional synergistic effect of Sn in a novel Sn-doped WO3/RGO catalyst and makes it a promising candidate in green oxidation of alcohols under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:Designing and synthesizing highly efficient non-noble metal-based catalysts with uniform active sites provide a powerful platform for recognizing real active sites and understanding catalytic reaction mechanisms. Herein, we prepared a series of N-doped graphene-like carbon (NG) intercalated Co-based single/dual-atom catalysts via hard template-assisted spatial confinement strategy. Comprehensive characterizations confirmed the atomically dispersed cobalt single atom active sites. The obtained Co SACs@NG-800-50 catalyst exhibits satisfying activity and selectivity for oxidative esterification of benzyl alcohol and other investigated alcohols under mild conditions. The catalyst can effectively activate O 2 to generate ∙O 2- active species through abundant CoN 3 active sites, thus promoting the smooth progress of oxidative esterification of aromatic alcohols. Moreover, the catalyst displays excellent structural stability and recycling durability even after 6 times of reaction.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols to aldehydes with oxygen is of crucial importance for industrial catalysis, while obtaining high selectivity for easily over-oxidized target products at high conversion is challenging. Herein, Co single atoms supported by nitrogen doped carbon catalysts (Co 1 /NC) were successfully prepared by a self-assembly–pyrolysis strategy and applied into the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. The reaction results showed that Co 1 /NC catalysts exhibited excellent performance compared to Co nanoparticles supported by nitrogen doped carbon catalyst (Co NPs /NC), among which the 4-Co 1 /NC catalyst achieved 95.2% benzyl alcohol conversion and nearly 99.9% benzaldehyde selectivity. Advanced characterization combined with density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the exceptional catalytic performance of Co 1 /NC catalysts was attributed to the formed CoN 4 sites, which could moderately activate oxygen and accelerate the desorption of generated benzaldehyde through the electron transfer from Co to the support. The work provides a new insight into the catalysis of single atom sites and their potential applications in alcohol oxidation.

Abstract:The oxidation of hydrocarbons to produce high value-added compounds (ketones or alcohols) using oxygen in air as the only oxidant is an efficient synthetic strategy from both environmental and economic views. Herein, we successfully synthesized cobalt single atom site catalysts (Co SACs) with high metal loading of 23.58 wt.% supported on carbon nitride (CN), which showed excellent catalytic properties for oxidation of ethylbenzene in air. Moreover, Co SACs show a much higher turn-over frequency (19.6 h−1) than other reported non-noble catalysts under the same condition. Comparatively, the as-obtained nanosized or homogenous Co catalysts are inert to this reaction. Co SACs also exhibit high selectivity (97%) and stability (unchanged after five runs) in this reaction. DFT calculations reveal that Co SACs show a low energy barrier in the first elementary step and a high resistance to water, which result in the robust catalytic performance for this reaction.

Abstract:Selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols offers an attractive means to address challenges in the modern chemical industry, but the development of non-noble metal catalysts with superior efficacy for this reaction remains a grand challenge. Here, this study reports on such a catalyst based on atomically defined undercoordinated copper atoms over nitrogen-doped carbon support as an efficient, durable, and scalable heterogeneous catalyst for selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols. This catalyst exhibits extremely high intrinsic catalytic activity (TOF of 7692 h(-1)) in the oxidation of cinnamyl alcohol to afford cinnamaldehyde, along with exceptional recyclability (at least eight cycles), scalability, and broad substrate scope. DFT calculations suggest that the high activity derives from the low oxidation state and the unique coordination environment of the copper sites in the catalyst. These findings pave the way for the design of highly active and stable single atom catalysts to potentially address challenges in synthetic chemistry.
Atomically Dispersed N/O-Coordinated Cobalt Catalyst Enables Aerobic Oxygenation of Olefins under Ambient Conditions

Abstract:Oxygenation of hydrocarbons with O2 as the oxidant is industrially important; however, current processes typically require high temperature and/or pressure. Herein, we report an atomically dispersed Co catalyst (Co1/NOC) capable of converting olefins to corresponding ketones and alcohols under ambient conditions with high activity and chemoselectivity. Isotopic labeling and intermediate trapping experiments reveal that reactions proceed via a heterogeneous hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism with carbon-centered radicals, followed by activating molecular oxygen. Co1/NOC surpasses homogeneous Co-based HAT catalysts in activity, showing that the properly doped carbon support could provide a suitable coordinating environment. The turnover frequency of Co1/NOC is more than three times higher than that of Co1/NC, which is attributed to the downshift d-band center of the cobalt center due to the extra O-coordination in the Co1/NOC. Furthermore, Co1/NOC is able to catalyze the oxygenation of styrene derivatives with sensitive functional groups, achieving selective oxygenation of the carbon–carbon double bond.

Abstract:Utilization of nonprecious transition metals for high alcohols synthesis is of a great importance in heterogeneous catalysis. We synthesized successfully cobalt metal-carbide (Co–Co2C) catalysts, which present remarkable activity and selectivity for high alpha-alcohols via the Fischer–Tropsch reaction. The formation of the stable cobalt carbide and the Co–Co2C interface are found to be essential for the observed reactivity. Density functional theory calculations show that Co2C is highly efficient for CO nondissociative adsorption, behaving as noble-metal-like, whereas the Co metal is highly active for CO dissociative adsorption and the subsequent carbon-chain growth. The interface between the cobalt metal and its carbide phase, as well as the dual sites available at the interface for facile CO insertion to hydrocarbon, could be used to rationalize the design of the nonprecious transition metal catalysts for the oxygenates in syngas conversion.

Abstract:Catalytic deoxygenation represents a straightforward and core methodology for fine-chemical production and biomass upgrading. Generally, the application of homogeneous metal complexes or heterogeneous noble-metal catalysts prevails in academia and the chemical industry. Herein, we introduce cobalt@ordered mesoporous carbon (Co@OMC) catalysts, which are constructed conveniently by a mechanochemical coordination self-assembly based on a renewable tannin precursor. Importantly, the Co@OMC catalysts with a high loading of insitu confined Co species promote the selective deoxygenation of various ketones, aldehydes, and alcohols efficiently into the corresponding alkanes under mild conditions. Therefore, a simple, inexpensive, and heterogeneous catalyst for selective deoxygenation can be expected, meanwhile the solid-state synthesis affords a green, rapid, and scalable pathway to Co@OMC catalysts.

Abstract:Double atoms catalysts (DACs) emerged very recently as excellent materials and were used in various catalytic reactions due to their excellent catalytic activity. Although active research on the design DACs has been ongoing for almost a decade, little attention has been paid to the detailed catalytic mechanisms. Based on density functional theory (DFT) analysis, the iron dimer embedded in N-containing graphene () has the most excellent adsorption properties of O2 and CO among DACs systems (, M1/M2 = Fe, Co, Ni). We considered the influence of N atoms concentration and position on the adsorption performance and stability of the iron dimer, was screened as a potential DAC. We systematically studied the catalytic mechanisms of CO oxidation on and its monometallic counterpart (). CO oxidation on along the Eley–Rideal (ER) and termolecular Eley–Rideal (TER) mechanisms needs to overcome the low energy barriers of 0.513 eV and 0.299 eV, which is smaller than the maximum energy barrier (0.584 eV) of CO oxidation along the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (LH) mechanism on Therefore, has high activity for CO oxidation, which can provide useful guidance for the development of low-cost and efficient green DACs.

Abstract:Developing a green and cost-effective catalytic system for the selective oxidation of biomass-derived alcohols is vital for the sustainable synthesis of fine chemicals. Herein, highly dispersed subnanometric amorphous CoOx clusters in anatase TiO2 nanosheets (Co-TiO2) fabricated by green solvent CO2 assisted approach could directly activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the highly selective oxidation of various biomass-derived alcohols. Advanced characterizations (e.g., EXAFS, EPR, AC HAADF-STEM) reveal that a strong interaction of CoOx clusters and the anatase TiO2 support exist in Co-TiO2 and Co atom in Co-TiO2 is mainly consisted of Co2+ and Co3+. The Co-TiO2 catalyst offers superior catalytic performance in the conversion of six types of alcohols (e.g., benzyl alcohol (BAL), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)) with high selectivity to produce corresponding aldehydes. Highly dispersed CoOx clusters and the interaction between CoOx clusters and TiO2 support contribute to the superior performance. Mechanism studies show that SO4 radicals play the dominant role in the selective oxidation of model reactant BAL and 1O2 participates in the non-radical pathway. DFT calculations are well matched with experiment and decipher that the strong interaction between CoOx clusters and TiO2 support promotes the formation of SO4 and SO5.

N-Doped Graphene-Supported Diatomic Ni–Fe Catalyst for Synergistic Oxidation of CO

Abstract:Polynary single-atom structures can provide synergistic functions based on multiple active sites and reactants, which significantly improve their catalytic performance. However, the structure-activity relationships of these special structures remain elusive. Here, we report atomically dispersed Fe-Ni dual-metal catalysts anchored on N-doped graphene as an efficient catalyst for CO oxidation. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation results show that Ni serves as a catalytic nucleophilic center for CO adsorption, whereas Fe serves as an electrophilic center for O-2 adsorption, making full use of the dual-metal active sites. Thus, a heteronuclear Fe1Ni1@NGr catalyst with the synergistic effect of combining dissimilar metal atoms has better catalytic activity and lower propensity for CO poisoning than its homonuclear counterparts. Comparing the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) and Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanisms for CO oxidation on Fe1Ni1@NGr, Ni-2@NGr, and Fe-2@NGr, we find that the LH mechanism with coadsorbed CO and O-2 is dynamically more favorable. In addition, residual oxygen atoms attached to the Fe-Ni active sites can easily react with additional CO molecules, indicating the achievement of a high recycling rate. These findings reveal a synergistic catalytic mechanism of graphene-supported atomically dispersed transition dual-metal catalysts, providing important guidance for the rational design of atomically dispersed catalysts.
Sub-2 Nm Cobalt Oxide Cluster Catalyst Supported on Alumina for Efficient Water Oxidation

Abstract:Earth-abundant cobalt oxides as active water oxidation catalysts have attracted extensive attention, but the controlled synthesis of small cobalt oxide clusters still remains challenging. Herein we introduce a novel approach to deposit small cobalt oxide clusters on alumina which involves mild oxidation of molecularly dispersed Co-4(CO)(12) precursor. Scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) shows that the size of prepared CoOx clusters is smaller than 2 nm. Turnover frequency (TOF) value of water oxidation on the synthesized cobalt oxide clusters can reach as high as 0.067 s(-1) in photochemical Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)-Na2S2O8 system, which is at least an order of magnitude higher than bulk cobalt oxide nanoparticles. The remarkably enhanced activity of cobalt oxide cluster is attributed to its more surface-exposed cobalt atoms and higher intrinsic activity. (C) 2015 Published by ElseVier B.V.
Exceptional formaldehyde oxidation at room temperature on Co single-atom functionalized TiO 2 nanowires via highly effective O 2 activation

Abstract:O 2 activation is vital for catalyzing the oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO). Despite the high O 2 activation capabilities demonstrated by noble metal catalysts, their practical application is impeded by their exorbitant cost. Herein, Co single atoms were successfully incorporated into titanium dioxide nanowires (TiO 2 -NWs). Furthermore, the key step in the HCHO catalytic oxidation process was elucidated through in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Finally, the intricate O 2 activation mechanism was explored, revealing the catalyst's exceptional performance in ambient HCHO oxidation. Notably, it outperformed commercial TiO 2 (TiO 2 -P25) by 13.3 times and Co-supported TiO 2 -P25 by 1.9 times. Co single atoms facilitated the conversion of O 2 into superoxide (O 2 - ), significantly reducing the reaction barrier of dioxymethylene to formate. This superior O 2 activation was attributed to the active nature and unsaturated electronic configuration of Co single atoms. This study provides a novel, cost-effective strategy for creating HCHO elimination catalysts with accessible nonnoble transition metals.

Abstract:Selectively aerobic oxidation of cyclohexane using the homogeneous catalysts is an industrially important process, suffering from the difficult catalyst separation, low conversion and selectivity. Herein, a series of single-atom Co catalysts, possessing the ultralow Co loading of below 1.0 wt.‰, supported on mesoporous graphitic carbon nitrogen (Co/g-C 3 N 4 - w ) were prepared by a simple adsorption method and applied into the cyclohexane oxidation. Characterization results demonstrate that the confinement effect of the voids in g-C 3 N 4 facilitates the formation of the single-atom Co, which is stabilized by bonding with the pyridinic nitrogen of g-C 3 N 4 and accompanied by the electron transfer from Co to g-C 3 N 4 . The catalytic performance presents an increasing trend with the increment of the Co loading, and the superior value with the conversion of 23.8% and selectivity of 95.6% is obtained over Co/g-C 3 N 4 -0.9. Kinetic study, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and characterizations reveal that the decreased activation energy of cyclohexane oxidation over Co/g-C 3 N 4 - w can be attributed to the favorable dissociation activation of O 2 molecules and decomposition of cyclohexylhydroperoxide (CHHP) intermediate on the coordination unsaturated single-atom Co as well as the enhanced adsorption of cyclohexane on the electron-rich g-C 3 N 4 surface, boosting the cyclohexane oxidation following the surface catalytic mechanism. Distinctively, robust Co-N structures and hydrophobic nature of g-C 3 N 4 contribute to the high stability of Co/g-C 3 N 4 -0.9 for cyclohexane oxidation.

Abstract:In this work, we utilize a one-step pyrolysis method to thermally synthesize a non-precious cobalt-based nitrogen-doped graphene (Co-NG) using graphene oxide (GO) and guanidine hydrochloride (GuHCl) with a small amount of CoCl2 precursor as a low-cost and highly efficient catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The synthesized cobalt-based nitrogen-doped graphene (Co-NG) was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrocatalytic activity of the Co-NG composite towards the ORR was evaluated using linear sweep voltammetry method. Electrochemical measurements reveal that the obtained Co-NG 850 composite has excellent catalytic activity towards the ORR in an alkaline electrolyte, including a large kinetic-limiting current density and good stability, as well as it exhibits the desirable four-electron pathway for the formation of water. These superior properties make the Co-NG 850 a promising cathode catalyst for alkaline fuel cells.

Abstract:Atomic engineering of single atom catalysts (SACs) with high-density available active sites and optimized electronic properties can substantially boost catalytic efficacy. Herein, we report a solid-state transformation strategy to access Co SACs by introducing Co species from commercial Co2O3 powders into nitrogen-doped carbon support. The catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity, with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 2,307 h−1 and yield of 95%, in the direct C-C cross-coupling of benzyl alcohol and 1-phenylethanol (1 atm O2@80 °C) to yield chalcone. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate the coordination environment and electronic metal-support interaction impact the catalytic pathway. In particular, a wide substrate scope and a broad functional-group tolerance of this SAC were validated, and the employment of this strategy for large-scale synthesis was also shown to be feasible. This work might shed light on the facile and scalable synthesis of highly active, selective, and stable SACs for heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:PtCo alloy@cobalt benzoate/graphene (PtCo@Co‐BA/Gr) composite catalyst with 0D/1D/2D multidimensional structure is presented with simple solvothermal approach. As the introduced critical carrier, benzoic acid cobalt (II) (Co‐BA) has porous channels matching the size of platinum (Pt) nanoparticles and can enable PtCo alloy particles to be formed in its 1D mesopores through in situ reduction. Experiments indicate that the hydroxyl (OH) groups on the outer surface of Co‐BA are beneficial to form a strong interaction between Co‐BA and graphene. Compared with commercial Pt/C catalyst, the prepared PtCo@Co‐BA/Gr composite catalysts display an enlarged electrochemically active surface area, enhanced catalytic activity, and prolonged durability in acidic media toward the oxidation of various alcohols, such as methanol, ethanol, and ethylene glycol, which is mainly due to the increased surface area of PtCo by the confinement of mesoporous Co‐BA fiber, the promotion of water molecule dissociation of Co‐BA skeleton, and the improvement of conductivity by the introduction of graphene.

Abstract:The research and development of the new heterogeneous photocatalysts for selective organic transformations under visible-light irradiation and environmentally friendly conditions is still considered as one of the hot topics in the fine chemical industry. Here, we report the synthesis of cobalt porphyrin-supported nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped graphene quantum dots/graphene (CoPP@N, P: GQD/G) and their impressive performance as efficient, recyclable, and noble metal free heterogeneous photocatalysts in the aerobic oxidation reaction of alcohols under visible-light irradiation. In terms of catalytic activity, these catalysts afford much higher conversion (ca. 92%) and selectivity (ca. 86%) than most reported photocatalysts under the same reaction conditions. This work notes the considerable potential of CoPP@N, P: GQD/G photocatalysts in the aerobic oxidation reaction owning to high activity and selectivity, short reaction time, reusability and easy separation under ambient and green conditions.Graphical Abstract
