Abstract:Photocatalytic organic synthesis has attracted much attention in recent years. Herein, a N and C co-decorated mesoporous TiO2 (mp-NCT) photocatalyst was synthesized for selective oxidation of alcohols. Notably, the asprepared mp-NCT composites possess large specific surface areas and mesoporous structures, which could provide sufficient active sites and improve mass transfer. Furthermore, the co-doping of N and C species could not only extend the light absorption, but also tune the valence band of TiO2. Meanwhile, numerous oxygen vacancies and intra-band could be introduced, which helps to reduce the combination of the photogenerated carriers. As a result, the mp-NCT composites show excellent photocatalytic performance towards selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol and its derivatives to corresponding aldehydes under simulated sunlight irradiation. Mechanism studies revealed that the photogenerated electrons, holes and high dynamic equilibrium concentration of O2 center dot- radicals were responsible for the efficient conversion of alcohols to aldehydes.
Promotional Synergistic Effect of Sn Doping into a Novel Bimetallic Sn-W Oxides/graphene Catalyst for Selective Oxidation of Alcohols Using Aqueous H2O2 Without Additives

Abstract:A series of novel catalysts with bimetallic Sn-W oxides uniformly dispersed on reduced graphene oxide (denoted as Sn-W/RGO) were successfully prepared via a conventional one-pot hydrothermal method. Interestingly, it was found that the introduction of Sn could significantly improve the catalytic activities compared with single WO3/graphene catalyst for selective oxidation of alcohols using H2O2 without organic solvents and additives. Subsequently, the catalysts were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, Raman, FESEM, EDS, HRTEM, XPS and N-2 adsorption-desorption to investigate the promotional synergistic effect of Sn among catalyst structure, surface properties and catalytic performance. The results revealed that the incorporation of Sn had induced the formation of hexagonal WO3 with dominant exposed (001) and (200) planes, meanwhile, doping Sn could dramatically increase the specific surface area, change the structural properties and enhance the interactions between Sn-W oxides and graphene, which were beneficial to the improvement of catalytic performance. Additionally, reaction parameters (temperature, time, oxidant dosage and catalyst amount) were also explored. Both aryl and alkyl alcohols exhibited high conversion and selectivity to corresponding target products over the catalyst. And delightedly, the robust catalyst could be reused for five times without significant loss in catalytic efficiency. This work demonstrates the promotional synergistic effect of Sn in a novel Sn-doped WO3/RGO catalyst and makes it a promising candidate in green oxidation of alcohols under mild reaction conditions.
Cobalt Single Atoms on Tetrapyridomacrocyclic Support for Efficient Peroxymonosulfate Activation.

Abstract:Transition-metal catalysts that can efficiently activate peroxide bonds have been extensively pursued for various applications including environmental remediation, chemical synthesis, and sensing. Here, we present pyridine-coordinated Co single atoms embedded in a polyaromatic macrostructure as a highly efficient peroxide-activation catalyst. The efficient catalytic production of reactive radicals through peroxymonosulfate activation was demonstrated by the rapid removal of model aqueous pollutants of environmental and public health concerns such as bisphenol A, without pH limitation and Co2+ leaching. The turnover frequency of the newly synthesized Co single-atom catalyst bound to tetrapyridomacrocyclic ligands was found to be 2 to 4 orders of magnitude greater than that of benchmark homogeneous (Co2+) and nanoparticulate (Co3O4) catalysts. Experimental results and density functional theory simulation suggest that the abundant π-conjugation in the polyaromatic support and strong metal-support electronic interaction allow the catalysts to effectively adsorb and activate the peroxide precursor. We further loaded the catalysts onto a widely used poly(vinylidene fluoride) microfiltration membrane and demonstrated that the model pollutants were oxidatively removed as they simply passed through the filter, suggesting the promise of utilizing this novel catalyst for realistic applications.

Abstract:Selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols offers an attractive means to address challenges in the modern chemical industry, but the development of non-noble metal catalysts with superior efficacy for this reaction remains a grand challenge. Here, this study reports on such a catalyst based on atomically defined undercoordinated copper atoms over nitrogen-doped carbon support as an efficient, durable, and scalable heterogeneous catalyst for selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols. This catalyst exhibits extremely high intrinsic catalytic activity (TOF of 7692 h(-1)) in the oxidation of cinnamyl alcohol to afford cinnamaldehyde, along with exceptional recyclability (at least eight cycles), scalability, and broad substrate scope. DFT calculations suggest that the high activity derives from the low oxidation state and the unique coordination environment of the copper sites in the catalyst. These findings pave the way for the design of highly active and stable single atom catalysts to potentially address challenges in synthetic chemistry.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols to aldehydes with oxygen is of crucial importance for industrial catalysis, while obtaining high selectivity for easily over-oxidized target products at high conversion is challenging. Herein, Co single atoms supported by nitrogen doped carbon catalysts (Co 1 /NC) were successfully prepared by a self-assembly–pyrolysis strategy and applied into the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. The reaction results showed that Co 1 /NC catalysts exhibited excellent performance compared to Co nanoparticles supported by nitrogen doped carbon catalyst (Co NPs /NC), among which the 4-Co 1 /NC catalyst achieved 95.2% benzyl alcohol conversion and nearly 99.9% benzaldehyde selectivity. Advanced characterization combined with density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the exceptional catalytic performance of Co 1 /NC catalysts was attributed to the formed CoN 4 sites, which could moderately activate oxygen and accelerate the desorption of generated benzaldehyde through the electron transfer from Co to the support. The work provides a new insight into the catalysis of single atom sites and their potential applications in alcohol oxidation.

Abstract:Designing and synthesizing highly efficient non-noble metal-based catalysts with uniform active sites provide a powerful platform for recognizing real active sites and understanding catalytic reaction mechanisms. Herein, we prepared a series of N-doped graphene-like carbon (NG) intercalated Co-based single/dual-atom catalysts via hard template-assisted spatial confinement strategy. Comprehensive characterizations confirmed the atomically dispersed cobalt single atom active sites. The obtained Co SACs@NG-800-50 catalyst exhibits satisfying activity and selectivity for oxidative esterification of benzyl alcohol and other investigated alcohols under mild conditions. The catalyst can effectively activate O 2 to generate ∙O 2- active species through abundant CoN 3 active sites, thus promoting the smooth progress of oxidative esterification of aromatic alcohols. Moreover, the catalyst displays excellent structural stability and recycling durability even after 6 times of reaction.

Abstract:A novel strategy for better catalytic performance in terms of precisely tuning the metal atom number of active centers is gradually getting attention. In this paper, the Co atom pair sites on N-doped porous carbon was engineered. The binuclear Co2 site structure was identified by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. As expected, the Co2NC display an outstanding Fenton-like catalysis activity in tetracycline degradation with turnover frequency exceeding 0.91 min-1 that is approximately 4 times higher than the conventional CoN4 site. The EPR tests indicated that the ROS strength stimulated by the binuclear site was much stronger than that of single site. Theoretical density functional theory calculations reveal that the optimized adsorption configuration is the O1 of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) interacting with two Co atoms, leading to stronger interaction effect and electron transfer for PMS comparing to single atom sites.

Abstract:Heterogeneous molecular cobalt (Co) sites represent one type of classical catalytic sites for electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solutions. There are dynamic equilibriums between Co2+, Co3+ and Co4+ states coupling with OH−/H+ interaction before and during the OER event. Since the emergence of Co2+ sites is detrimental to the OER cycle, the stabilization of high-valent Co sites to shift away from the equilibrium becomes critical and is proposed as a new strategy to enhance OER. Herein, phosphorus (P) atoms were doped into reduced graphene oxide to link molecular Co2+ acetylacetonate toward synthesizing a novel heterogeneous molecular catalyst. By increasing the oxidation states of P heteroatoms, the linked Co sites were spontaneously oxidized from 2+ to 3+ states in a KOH solution through OH− ions coupling at an open circuit condition. With excluding the Co2+ sites, the as-derived Co sites with 3+ initial states exhibited intrinsically high OER activity, validating the effectiveness of the strategy of stabilizing high valence Co sites.

Abstract:Herein, we present atomically dispersed cobalt anchored carbon nitride (Co-CN) as a highly efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-activation catalyst. Different from the traditional catalytic pathways, in which hydroxyl radical, sulfate radical, singlet oxygen, or surface-bound PMS engaged as primary oxidants, high-valent cobalt-oxo [Co(IV)] species generated from a unique two-electron transfer pathway are confirmed as primary oxidants. Hydroxyl radical triggered by Co(IV) serves as secondary intermediate oxidant. In addition, it is interesting to find that such Co(IV)-based nonradical pathway can be switched to a radical-dominated pathway under light irradiation, suggesting the Co-CN can not only act as a PMS activator but also as a photoswitch to regulate the PMS oxidation pathways. On the basis of experiment and DFT calculations, the switchable catalysis can be attributed to the formation of photoinduced hole-trapping sites on the single Co atoms, which result in the primary PMS activation sites convert from single Co atoms to melem units. More importantly, considering the distinctive oxidation feature of Co(IV) and radical species, our finding provides a novel strategy to expand the application possibilities of Co-based Fenton-like process in dealing with different environmental issues by flexibly controlling the PMS catalytic pathways.

Single Cobalt Atoms with Precise N‐Coordination As Superior Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalysts

Abstract:AbstractA new strategy for achieving stable Co single atoms (SAs) on nitrogen‐doped porous carbon with high metal loading over 4 wt % is reported. The strategy is based on a pyrolysis process of predesigned bimetallic Zn/Co metal–organic frameworks, during which Co can be reduced by carbonization of the organic linker and Zn is selectively evaporated away at high temperatures above 800 °C. The spherical aberration correction electron microscopy and extended X‐ray absorption fine structure measurements both confirm the atomic dispersion of Co atoms stabilized by as‐generated N‐doped porous carbon. Surprisingly, the obtained Co‐Nx single sites exhibit superior ORR performance with a half‐wave potential (0.881 V) that is more positive than commercial Pt/C (0.811 V) and most reported non‐precious metal catalysts. Durability tests revealed that the Co single atoms exhibit outstanding chemical stability during electrocatalysis and thermal stability that resists sintering at 900 °C. Our findings open up a new routine for general and practical synthesis of a variety of materials bearing single atoms, which could facilitate new discoveries at the atomic scale in condensed materials.

Abstract:The oxidation of hydrocarbons to produce high value-added compounds (ketones or alcohols) using oxygen in air as the only oxidant is an efficient synthetic strategy from both environmental and economic views. Herein, we successfully synthesized cobalt single atom site catalysts (Co SACs) with high metal loading of 23.58 wt.% supported on carbon nitride (CN), which showed excellent catalytic properties for oxidation of ethylbenzene in air. Moreover, Co SACs show a much higher turn-over frequency (19.6 h−1) than other reported non-noble catalysts under the same condition. Comparatively, the as-obtained nanosized or homogenous Co catalysts are inert to this reaction. Co SACs also exhibit high selectivity (97%) and stability (unchanged after five runs) in this reaction. DFT calculations reveal that Co SACs show a low energy barrier in the first elementary step and a high resistance to water, which result in the robust catalytic performance for this reaction.

Abstract:Oxygenation of hydrocarbons with O2 as the oxidant is industrially important; however, current processes typically require high temperature and/or pressure. Herein, we report an atomically dispersed Co catalyst (Co1/NOC) capable of converting olefins to corresponding ketones and alcohols under ambient conditions with high activity and chemoselectivity. Isotopic labeling and intermediate trapping experiments reveal that reactions proceed via a heterogeneous hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism with carbon-centered radicals, followed by activating molecular oxygen. Co1/NOC surpasses homogeneous Co-based HAT catalysts in activity, showing that the properly doped carbon support could provide a suitable coordinating environment. The turnover frequency of Co1/NOC is more than three times higher than that of Co1/NC, which is attributed to the downshift d-band center of the cobalt center due to the extra O-coordination in the Co1/NOC. Furthermore, Co1/NOC is able to catalyze the oxygenation of styrene derivatives with sensitive functional groups, achieving selective oxygenation of the carbon–carbon double bond.

Abstract:We successfully prepared Fe and Co isolated single atoms on metal-organic framework derived nitrogen-doped carbon (FeCo-ISAs/CN) by an adsorption-calcination strategy. The obtained FeCo-ISAs/CN exhibited top-level catalytic reactivity for the alkaline oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with a half-wave potential of 0.920 V, which was 70 mV more positive than that of commercial Pt/C. Moreover, the catalyst was durable and showed negligible activity decay in the alkaline ORR during 5000 voltage cycles.
High Performance of N-doped Cobalt Oxide (N-Coox) for Peroxymonosulfate Activation: Unraveling the Functional Mechanism of Co-Nx Sites at Molecular Level

Abstract:Nitrogen (N)-doping has been reported effective to reinforce catalysis in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) due to the formation of N-related active sites. Although several documents have reported that transition metalnitrogen (metal-Nx) sites could work as reactive centers, the catalytic mechanism was hardly elucidated. In this study, N-doped cobalt oxide (N-CoOx) was initiatively prepared via calcination in ammonia atmosphere to construct cobalt-nitrogen (Co-Nx) sites. The emergence of Co-Nx sites effectively improved peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation efficiency (above 5.8 times), leading to higher pollutant decomposition rate (95.8 % at 30 min) and kinetics constant (above 4.1 times). N introduction changed main facets of material and elevated adsorption energy (Eads) (from -1.81 eV to -3.71 eV) between catalyst and PMS. Co atoms at Co-Nx sites could donate larger quantity of electrons (from 1.088 e to 1.583 e) to PMS, therefore, contributed to stretching and breaking O-O bonds of PMS molecules to form reactive species. As a result, both radical and electron transfer pathway (ETP) were enhanced in the oxidation processes. Ultimately, the catalytic membrane coated with N-CoOx maintained 100 % treatment towards continuous antibiotic wastewater at environmentally relevant concentration (mu g/L), realizing purification as well as separation of catalyst. This work systematically elaborates the superiority of Co-Nx sites and unravels the underlying mechanism to inspire further study to metal-Nx tailored catalysis.
Cobalt Single Atoms Anchored on Oxygen-Doped Tubular Carbon Nitride for Efficient Peroxymonosulfate Activation: Simultaneous Coordination Structure and Morphology Modulation

Abstract:Simultaneous regulation of the coordination environment of single-atom catalysts (SACs) and engineering architectures with efficient exposed active sites are efficient strategies for boosting peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. We isolated cobalt atoms with dual nitrogen and oxygen coordination (Co-N3O1) on oxygen-doped tubular carbon nitride (TCN) by pyrolyzing a hydrogen-bonded cyanuric acid melamine-cobalt acetate precursor. The theoretically constructed Co-N3O1 moiety on TCN exhibited an impressive mass activity of 7.61x10(5) min(-1) mol(-1) with high O-1(2) selectivity. Theoretical calculations revealed that the cobalt single atoms occupied a dual nitrogen and oxygen coordination environment, and that PMS adsorption was promoted and energy barriers reduced for the key *O intermediate that produced O-1(2). The catalysts were attached to a widely used poly(vinylidene fluoride) microfiltration membrane to deliver an antibiotic wastewater treatment system with 97.5 % ciprofloxacin rejection over 10 hours, thereby revealing the suitability of the membrane for industrial applications.

Abstract:<p>With the inspiration of developing bifunctional electrode materials for reversible oxygen electrocatalysis, one strategy of heteroatom doping is proposed to fabricate dual metal single‐atom catalysts. However, the identification and mechanism functions of polynary single‐atom structures remain elusive. Atomically dispersed binary Co‐Ni sites embedded in N‐doped hollow carbon nanocubes (denoted as CoNi‐SAs/NC) are synthesized via proposed pyrolysis of dopamine‐coated metal‐organic frameworks. The atomically isolated bimetallic configuration in CoNi‐SAs/NC is identified by combining microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. When employing as oxygen electrocatalysts in alkaline medium, the resultant CoNi‐SAs/NC hybrid manifests outstanding catalytic performance for bifunctional oxygen reduction/evolution reactions, boosting the realistic rechargeable zinc–air batteries with high efficiency, low overpotential, and robust reversibility, superior to other counterparts and state‐of‐the‐art precious‐metal catalysts. Theoretical computations based on density functional theory demonstrate that the homogenously dispersed single atoms and the synergistic effect of neighboring Co‐Ni dual metal center can optimize the adsorption/desorption features and decrease the overall reaction barriers, eventually promoting the reversible oxygen electrocatalysis. This work not only sheds light on the controlled synthesis of atomically isolated advanced materials, but also provides deeper understanding on the structure–performance relationships of nanocatalysts with multiple active sites for various catalytic applications.</p>

Cobalt doping amount determines dominant reactive species in peroxymonosulfate activation via porous carbon catalysts co-doped by cobalt and nitrogen

Abstract:Switching the reaction routes in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes have attracted much attention but remain challenging. Herein, a series of Co-N/C catalysts with different compositions and structures were prepared by using bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks based on ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 (xZn/Co-ZIFs). Results show that Co doping amount could mediate the transformation of the activation pathway of PMS over Co-N/C. When Co doping amount was less than 10%, the constructed xCo-N/C/PMS system (x ≤ 10%) was singlet oxygen-dominated reaction; however further increasing Co doping amount would lead to the generation and coexistence of sulfate radicals and high-valent cobalt, besides singlet oxygen. Furthermore, the nitrogen-coordinated Co (Co-NX) sites could serve as main catalytically active sites to generate singlet oxygen. While excess Co doping amount caused the formation of Co nanoparticles from which leached Co ions were responsible for the generation of sulfate radicals and high-valent cobalt. Compared to undoped N/C, Co doping could significantly enhance the catalytic performance. The 0.5% Co-N/C could achieve the optimum degradation (0.488 min-1) and mineralization abilities (78.4%) of sulfamethoxazole among the investigated Co-N/C catalysts, which was superior to most of previously reported catalysts. In addition, the application prospects of the two systems in different environmental scenarios (pH, inorganic anions and natural organic matter) were assessed and showed different degradation behaviors. This study provides a strategy to regulate the reactive species in PMS-based advanced oxidation process.
Direct activation of PMS by highly dispersed amorphous CoOx clusters in anatase TiO2 nanosheets for efficient oxidation of biomass-derived alcohols

Abstract:Developing a green and cost-effective catalytic system for the selective oxidation of biomass-derived alcohols is vital for the sustainable synthesis of fine chemicals. Herein, highly dispersed subnanometric amorphous CoOx clusters in anatase TiO2 nanosheets (Co-TiO2) fabricated by green solvent CO2 assisted approach could directly activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the highly selective oxidation of various biomass-derived alcohols. Advanced characterizations (e.g., EXAFS, EPR, AC HAADF-STEM) reveal that a strong interaction of CoOx clusters and the anatase TiO2 support exist in Co-TiO2 and Co atom in Co-TiO2 is mainly consisted of Co2+ and Co3+. The Co-TiO2 catalyst offers superior catalytic performance in the conversion of six types of alcohols (e.g., benzyl alcohol (BAL), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)) with high selectivity to produce corresponding aldehydes. Highly dispersed CoOx clusters and the interaction between CoOx clusters and TiO2 support contribute to the superior performance. Mechanism studies show that SO4 radicals play the dominant role in the selective oxidation of model reactant BAL and 1O2 participates in the non-radical pathway. DFT calculations are well matched with experiment and decipher that the strong interaction between CoOx clusters and TiO2 support promotes the formation of SO4 and SO5.

Abstract:Co single atoms modified N‐doped carbon (N‐C) supports are engaged to promote the activity and durability of Pt nanoparticles for the methanol oxidation reaction. Incorporating Co single atoms not only optimizes the intrinsic activity of Pt active centers, but also highly facilitates the oxidative removal of CO intermediates, minimizing the poisoning effect of the adjacent Pt sites. Developing efficient platinum (Pt)‐based electrocatalysts with high tolerance to CO poisoning for the methanol oxidation reaction is critical for the development of direct methanol fuel cells. In this work, cobalt single atoms are introduced to enhance the electrocatalytic performance of N‐doped carbon supported Pt (N‐C/Pt) for the methanol oxidation reaction. The cobalt single atoms are believed to play a critical role in accelerating the prompt oxidation of CO to CO2 and minimizing the CO blocking of the adjacent Pt active sites. Benefitting from the synergistic effects among the Co single atoms, the Pt nanoparticles, and the N‐doped carbon support, the Co‐modified N‐C/Pt (Co‐N‐C/Pt) electrocatalyst simultaneously delivers impressive electrocatalytic activity and durability with lower onset potential and superb CO poisoning resistance as compared to the N‐C/Pt and the commercial Pt/C electrocatalysts.
