Abstract:To understand the process and mechanism of the bioreduction of goethite by Cronobacter sakazakii, a heterotrophic facultative anaerobe, the growth status of the bacteria, variation of Fe(II) concentration, as well as the transformation of mineral structure were studied using solution analysis, scanning electron microscope (SEM), synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction (SR-XRD) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). In the logarithmic and stationary phases of bacteria growth, the bacteria reduced the Fe(III) in goethite rapidly and the Fe(II) was accumulated to 47.5 mg/L in 4 days. In the decline phase, the yield of Fe(II) was slowed down, then ultimately stopped at the concentration of 49.7 mg/L. SR-XRD of the products showed a series of new peaks: 0.48, 0.603, 0.613, 0.684, 0.77, and 1.14 nm, which were assigned to fougerite. XANES results showed the main absorption peaks shift toward the lower energy for about 1.0 eV. The decrease of centroid energy and the integrated intensity of the pre-edge peaks was due to a decrease in iron oxidation state, indicating the crystal structure of goethite was changed by bioreduction. These results helped to explore the bioreduction mechanism of goethite by Cronobacter sakazakii in anaerobic environment, and inspire new approaches to characterize very tiny amount of microbe-induced nanominerals.
