Abstract:Intermediate dimensions are a class of new fractal dimensions which provide a spectrum of dimensions interpolating between the Hausdorff and box-counting dimensions. In this paper, we study the intermediate dimensions of Moran sets. Moran sets may be regarded as a generalization of self-similar sets generated by using different class of similar mappings at each level with unfixed translations, and this causes the lack of ergodic properties on Moran set. Therefore, the intermediate dimensions do not necessarily exist, and we calculate the upper and lower intermediate dimensions of Moran sets. In particular, we obtain a simplified intermediate dimension formula for homogeneous Moran sets. Moreover, we study the visualization of the upper intermediate dimensions for some homogeneous Moran sets, and we show that their upper intermediate dimensions are given by Mobius transformations.

Abstract:Summary. We compute the Hausdorff dimension and the packing dimension of subsets of Moran fractals with prescribed mixed group frequencies. For example, if E denotes the set of real numbers x in [0, 1] for which the group of digits 1, 2, 3, 4 in the decimal expansion of x occurs with relative frequency t_1 ∈ [0, 1] and the group of digits 0, 1, 2, 8, 9 in the decimal expansion of x occurs with relative frequency t_2 ∈ [0, 1] , then our results shows that dim_ H E = dim_ P E = - 1/log 10 log ( t^t_1_1 t^t_2_2 (1 - t_1)^1-t_1 (1 - t_2)^1-t_2/2^t_13^1-t_1) , where dim H denotes the Hausdorff dimension and dim P denotes the packing dimension. Observe that the two groups of digits with prescribed frequencies, namely 1, 2, 3, 4 and 0, 1, 2, 8, 9, are mixed , i.e. they are not disjoint. Previous work [LD, O1, V] has investigated the non-mixed case. In this paper we investigate the more difficult problem of finding the Hausdorff dimension and packing dimension of subsets of Moran fractals with prescribed mixed group frequencies.

Abstract:The objective of this research is to establish a representation of the general Hausdorff and packing dimensions of compact sets in Euclidean space. This representation is formulated in terms of the lower and upper local dimensions with respect to two functions, denoted as h and g , which are associated with a probability measure defined on . Additionally, we establish a relationship that enables us to determine the general fractal dimensions by utilizing corresponding versions of these measures. These dimensions are defined as the supremum over the lower and upper general dimensions across all Borel probability measures. As a practical application of these findings, we introduce a variational principle for these general fractal dimensions. This principle establishes an equality between a parameter that is inherently linked to a given space or mapping and the supremum of specific values associated with a class of probability measures supported by the set, denoted as A . Furthermore, we propose two additional dimensions: the general concentration dimension and the general thin dimension. The concentration dimension is defined through the utilization of the Lévy concentration function and offers a relatively straightforward calculation method. It is closely connected to the mass distribution principle and often simplifies the determination of the general Hausdorff dimension of sets. The thin dimension, on the other hand, is grounded in the concept of the thin function, which can be seen as an anti-concentration function in relation to the Lévy function. This thin dimension also exhibits connections with the general fractal dimension.

A multifractal formalism for new general fractal measures

Abstract:In this study, we will introduce an innovative and comprehensive multifractal framework, substantiating counterparts to the classical findings in multifractal analysis and We embark on an exploration of the mutual singularity existing between the broader multifractal Hausdorff and packing measures within an expansive framework. An exemplar of this framework involves the application of the " second-order " multifractal formalism to our core results, elucidating a realm of compact subsets within a self-similar fractal structure — a familiar illustration of an infinite-dimensional metric space. Within this context, we provide estimations for both the overall Hausdorff and packing dimensions. It is noteworthy that these outcomes offer novel validations for theorems underpinning the multifractal formalism, rooted in these comprehensive multifractal measures. Furthermore, these findings remain valid even at points q where the multifractal functions governing Hausdorff and packing dimensions diverge. Additionally, we introduce the concepts of lower and upper relative multifractal box dimensions, accompanied by the general Rényi dimensions. A comparison is drawn between these dimensions and the general multifractal Hausdorff dimension, along with the general multifractal pre-packing dimension. Finally, we establish density conclusions pertaining to the multifractal extension of the centered Hausdorff and packing measures. Specifically, we unveil a decomposition theorem akin to Besicovitch's theorem for these measures. This theorem facilitates a division into two components – one characterized as regular and the other as irregular – thus enabling a targeted analysis of each segment. Following this dissection, we seamlessly reintegrate these segments while preserving their intrinsic density attributes. The impetus behind investigating these comprehensive measures arises when a set E holds either a conventional Hausdorff measure of zero or infinity; In such cases, we can identify a function φs that bestows a positive and finite general Hausdorff measure upon the set E , and studies the dimensions of infinitely dimensional sets.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of gap sequences for compact sets E subset of R(d), which is a generalization of the gap sequences of compact sets on the real line. We show that if the gap sequences of two fractal sets are not equivalent, then these two sets cannot be Lipschitz equivalent, where the latter fact is usually very hard to verify. Finally, we show that for some typical fractal sets, the gap sequences characterize the upper box dimension.

Abstract:Hausdorff and box dimension are two familiar notions of fractal dimension. Box dimension can be larger than Hausdorff dimension, because in the definition of box dimension, all sets in the cover have the same diameter, but for Hausdorff dimension there is no such restriction. This thesis focuses on a family of dimensions parameterised by $\theta \in (0,1)$, called the intermediate dimensions, which are defined by requiring that $\mbox{diam}(U) \leq (\mbox{diam}(V))^{\theta}$ for all sets $U,V$ in the cover. We begin by generalising the intermediate dimensions to allow for greater refinement in how the relative sizes of the covering sets are restricted. These new dimensions can recover the interpolation between Hausdorff and box dimension for compact sets whose intermediate dimensions do not tend to the Hausdorff dimension as $\theta \to 0$. We also use a Moran set construction to prove a necessary and sufficient condition, in terms of Dini derivatives, for a given function to be realised as the intermediate dimensions of a set. We proceed to prove that the intermediate dimensions of limit sets of infinite conformal iterated function systems are given by the maximum of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set and the intermediate dimensions of the set of fixed points of the contractions. This applies to sets defined using continued fraction expansions, and has applications to dimensions of projections, fractional Brownian images, and general Hölder images. Finally, we determine a formula for the intermediate dimensions of all self-affine Bedford-McMullen carpets. The functions display features not witnessed in previous examples, such as having countably many phase transitions. We deduce that two carpets have equal intermediate dimensions if and only if the multifractal spectra of the corresponding uniform Bernoulli measures coincide.

Abstract:By introducing a novel expression for the Hausdorff and packing measures, denoted as Hφt and Pφt , respectively, in relation to the gauge function defined as φt(x)=h−1(tg(x)) for all positive values of t , we establish a connection between different approaches to defining the exact dimensions of Hausdorff and packing. Furthermore, we define both the upper and lower dimensions of Hausdorff and packing for a Borel probability measure and demonstrate that these dimensions can be represented using an entropy formula. This paper also addresses an intriguing question that has been raised multiple times regarding the structural representation of singular probability measures. We provide an affirmative response to this question by utilizing characteristic measures.

Fractal geometry of continued fractions with large coefficients and dimension drop problems

Abstract:In 1928, Jarn\'ık \cite{Jar} obtained that the set of continued fractions with bounded coefficients has Hausdorff dimension one. Good \cite{Goo} observed a dimension drop phenomenon by proving that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of continued fractions whose coefficients tend to infinity is one-half. For the set of continued fractions whose coefficients tend to infinity rapidly, Luczak \cite{Luc} and Feng et al. \cite{FWLT} showed that its Hausdorff dimension decreases even further. Recently, Liao and Rams \cite{LR16} also observed an analogous dimension drop phenomenon when they studied the subexponential growth rate of the sum of coefficients. In this paper, we consolidate and considerably extend the studies of the abovementioned problem into a general dimension drop problem on the distribution of continued fractions with large coefficients. As applications, we use a different approach to reprove a result of Wang and Wu on the dimensions of the Borel-Bernstein sets \cite{WW}, fulfil the dimension gap proposed by Liao and Rams \cite{LR16}, and establish several new results concerning the dimension theory of liminf and limsup sets related to the maximum of coefficients.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a class of fractals named homogeneous sets based on some measure versions of homogeneity, uniform perfectness and doubling. This fractal class includes all Ahlfors–David regular sets, but most of them are irregular in the sense that they may have different Hausdorff dimensions and packing dimensions. Using Moran sets as the main tool, we study the dimensions, bilipschitz embedding and quasi-Lipschitz equivalence of homogeneous fractals.

Abstract:In this paper, using two special types of rise-dimensional operators based on existing fractal functions, we construct new fractal surfaces with any value of the Hausdorff and Box dimension between two and three. Further, we demonstrate that the lower and upper Box dimension of such fractal surfaces may be unequal to each other. This result could be useful to the research on creating various fractal surfaces with the required fractal dimensions in the future.

Abstract:We study algorithmic problems on subsets of Euclidean space of low fractal dimension. These spaces are the subject of intensive study in various branches of mathematics, including geometry, topology, and measure theory. There are several well-studied notions of fractal dimension for sets and measures in Euclidean space. We consider a definition of fractal dimension for finite metric spaces which agrees with standard notions used to empirically estimate the fractal dimension of various sets. We define the fractal dimension of some metric space to be the infimum $\delta>0$, such that for any $\epsilon > 0$, for any ball $B$ of radius $r\geq 2\epsilon$, and for any $\epsilon $-net $N$ (that is, for any maximal $\epsilon $-packing), we have $|B\cap N|=O((r/\epsilon)^\delta)$. Using this definition we obtain faster algorithms for a plethora of classical problems on sets of low fractal dimension in Euclidean space. Our results apply to exact and fixed-parameter algorithms, approximation schemes, and spanner constructions. Interestingly, the dependence of the performance of these algorithms on the fractal dimension nearly matches the currently best-known dependence on the standard Euclidean dimension. Thus, when the fractal dimension is strictly smaller than the ambient dimension, our results yield improved solutions in all of these settings.

Abstract:Working with sets of infinite -Hausdorff measures can be cumbersome, so simplifying them to sets of positive finite general fractal measures proves to be highly beneficial. This paper aims to demonstrate that the -Hausdorff measures adhere to the property of being a subset of positive and finite measures. Our main result is then applied to establish that the general fractal function dimension is defined as the supremum of the general fractal dimension across all Borel probability measures.
