Abstract:When a drop impacts on a liquid surface, it can either bounce back or merge with the surface. The outcome affects many industrial processes, in which merging is preferred in spray coating to generate a uniform layer and bouncing is desired in internal combustion engines to prevent accumulation of the fuel drop on the wall. Thus, a good understanding of how to control the impact outcome is highly demanded to optimize the performance. For a given liquid, a regime diagram of bouncing and merging outcomes can be mapped in the space of Weber number (ratio of impact inertia and surface tension) versus film thickness. In addition, recognizing that the liquid viscosity is a fundamental fluid property that critically affects the impact outcome through viscous dissipation of the impact momentum, here we investigate liquids with a wide range of viscosity from 0.7 to 100 cSt, to assess its effect on the regime diagram. Results show that while the regime diagram maintains its general structure, the merging regime becomes smaller for more viscous liquids and the retraction merging regime disappears when the viscosity is very high. The viscous effects are modeled and subsequently the mathematical relations for the transition boundaries are proposed which agree well with the experiments. The new expressions account for all the liquid properties and impact conditions, thus providing a powerful tool to predict and manipulate the outcome when a drop impacts on a liquid film.
Bouncing Drop on Liquid Film: Dynamics of Interfacial Gas Layer

Abstract:The transition between merging and bouncing outcomes for a drop impacting on a liquid film is critically controlled by the resistance from the microscopic interfacial gas layer trapped between the interacting and deformable drop and film surfaces. Using high-speed imaging and color interferometry, we have quantified and analyzed the gas layer dynamics during bouncing when the liquid film thickness is comparable to the drop radius. Results show that the gas layer morphology changes dramatically and non-monotonically with the film thickness and that in addition to the centrally located dimple previously observed for impact on thin films, a new, rim-dimple morphology is observed for larger film thicknesses. The effects of capillarity of the drop and film are also delineated by increasing the liquid viscosity and hence damping the respective surface waves.
Non-monotonic Viscous Dissipation of Bouncing Droplets Undergoing Off-Center Collision

Abstract:The off-center collision of binary bouncing droplets of equal size was studied numerically by a volume-of-fluid method with two marker functions, which has been justified and validated by comparing with available experimental results. A nonmonotonic kinetic energy (KE) recovery with varying impact parameters was discovered. This can be explained by the prolonged entanglement time and the enhanced internal-flow-induced viscous dissipation for bouncing droplets at intermediate impact parameters, compared with those at smaller or larger impact parameters. The distribution of the local viscous dissipation rate (VDR) in the droplet interior shows two major concentration areas, and the competition between these two concentration areas accounts for the nonmonotonic viscous dissipation with varying impact parameters. The nonmonotonic KE recovery with varying impact parameters can also be attributed to the competition between the VDR induced by normal strains and shear strains. The nonmonotonicity was further numerically verified for wider ranges of parameters, and a practically useful formula was proposed to correlate the KE dissipation factor with the impact parameter for various Weber numbers and Ohnesorge numbers.

Abstract:The process of single liquid drop impact on thin liquid surface is numerically simulated with moving particle semi‐implicit method. The mathematical model involves gravity, viscosity and surface tension. The model is validated by the simulation of the experimental cases. It is found that the dynamic processes after impact are sensitive to the liquid pool depth and the initial drop velocity. In the cases that the initial drop velocity is low, the drop will be merged with the liquid pool and no big splash is seen. If the initial drop velocity is high enough, the dynamic process depends on the liquid depth. If the liquid film is very thin, a bowl‐shaped thin crown is formed immediately after the impact. The total crown subsequently expands outward and breaks into many tiny droplets. When the thickness of the liquid film increases, the direction of the liquid crown becomes normal to the surface and the crown propagates outward. It is also found that the radius of the crown is described by a square function of time: rC = [c(t − t0)]0.5. When the liquid film is thick enough, a crown and a deep cavity inside it are formed shortly after the impact. The bottom of the cavity is initially oblate and then the base grows downward to form a sharp corner and subsequently the corner moves downward. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:We herein report an experimental study to explore the effects of impact inertia, film thickness and viscosity on the dynamics of shape deformation of a drop impacting a liquid film. We have identified that the spreading dynamics shows a weak dependence on impact inertia, but strongly depends on the film thickness. For a thick film, the liquid surface deforms and absorbs part of the impact energy, and hence inhibits spreading of the drop. For a thin film, the drop motion is restricted by the bottom solid substrate, promoting spreading. The periodicity of the capillary controlled shape oscillation, on the other hand, is found to be independent of impact inertia and film thickness. The damping of the shape oscillation shows strong dependence on the film thickness, in that the oscillation decays faster for smaller film thicknesses, due to the enhanced viscous loss.

Abstract:<p>Droplet impinging on a flowing liquid film is investigated both experimentally and numerically in this study. Emphasis is placed on the interfacial evolution and dynamic feature as well as the corresponding underlying mechanisms behind. Results indicate that demarcation between splashing and non-splashing regimes can be expressed by a linear relationship between droplet Weber number and film flow Reynolds number, and a correlation estimating splashing threshold with mean absolute error of less than 2% is built up. While for the interface dynamic feature, increasing film flow rate leads to an asymmetrical interfacial evolution. In particular to the splashing at the higher film flow rates, it preferably takes place in the upstream position, but significantly suppressed in the downstream. Despite the very weak dependence of crown radial dimensions on impact velocity, the crown radiuses in the downstream are larger than those in the upstream due mainly to film shear force and streamwise migration, especially under high impact velocities. The crown top radius is reduced with increasing film flow rate as more liquid mass getting into the crown wall, but for the crown bottom radius, its effect is negligible. Increasing impact velocity leads to the increasing of crown both upstream and downstream heights, and the value in the upstream is much larger than the downstream, mainly caused by different intensities of flow kinematic discontinuity inside a liquid film. This asymmetry is aggravated further with increasing the film flow rate.</p>

Abstract:The spreading dynamics of Newtonian liquids have been extensively studied in hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces and its behavior has been extensively explored over the last years. However, drop impact of Non-Newtonian liquids still needs further study. Luu and Forterre (J. Fluid Mech., 632, 2009) successfully found scaling laws for yield-stress fluids on hydrophilic surfaces. They also uncovered interesting and yet unexplained regimes when the impact was performed on a superhydrophobic surface. In this work, we perform drop impact experiments on micro-patterned surfaces with two types of non-Newtonian liquids: one showing shear-thickening behavior and another one showing shear-thinning. Our results show that a typical shear-thickening liquid as cornstarch -at least a the relatively low concentration of 30\%w/w- spreads according to the scaling laws of Newtonian liquids, whereas visco-elastic liquids as Carbopol behave as predicted by Luu and Forterre for impact on hydrophilic surfaces, but show different scaling laws when they impact on superhydrophobic surfaces.

Abstract:Droplet impinging on liquid film is significant for many industrial processes. In this work, the normal impact of a single droplet on different thickness of concave curved liquid films is simulated. Coupled level set and volume of fluid method is used to capture the dynamics of drop impact and crown spreading. The variation of pressure field of droplets impacting the curved liquid film is investigated. The effect of film thickness and wall curvature on the water crown behavior is studied. With the curvature ratio increasing, the elevation angle of the velocity vector at crown rim increases, and the velocity gradient inside the crown decreases. The increase in curvature ratio also makes the crown sheet incline inward and suppresses the splash. The thickness of liquid film will lead to discrepancies in crown behaviors. The thin film makes the spreading speed of crown rim faster, and the crown top will shrink and splash. With the thickening of the liquid film, the influence of the thickness on the shape and size of the crown weakens. The separation of crown influenced by thin film is also analyzed.

Abstract:In order to investigate the material corrosion by liquid droplet-solid impact, a nonlinear coupling wave model adopted to analyze the impact between the spherical liquid droplet and an elastic solid plane has been developed. Many usable results such as the dimensionless pressure in the contact plane of liquid-solid and inside the liquid droplet, the equivalent stress distribution inside the solid, the effect of solid elasticity on the impact, and the locations of the maximum equivalent stress in different time steps are presented. It is shown clearly that the model can analyze the impact accurately and provide detailed information of impact, they are usable data to study material corrosion.

Abstract:The impact of droplets on the liquid film is widely involved in industrial and agricultural fields. In recent years, plenty of works are limited to dry walls or stationary liquid films, and the research of multi-droplet impact dynamic films is not sufficient. Based on this, this paper employs a coupled level set and volume of fluid (CLSVOF) method to numerically simulate two-droplet impingement on a dynamic liquid film. In our work, the dynamic film thickness, horizontal central distance between the droplets, droplets’ initial impact speed, and simultaneously the flow velocity of the moving film are analyzed. The evolution phenomenon and mechanism caused by the collision are analyzed in detail. We find that within a certain period of time, the droplet spacing does not affect the peripheral crown height; when the droplet spacing decreases or the initial impact velocity increases, the height of the peripheral crown increases at the beginning, and then, because the crown splashed under Rayleigh–Plateau instability, this results in the reduction of the crown height. At the same time, it is found that when the initial impact velocity increases, the angle between the upstream peripheral jet and the dynamic film becomes larger. The more obvious the horizontal movement characteristics, the more restrained the crown height; the spread length increases with the increase of the dynamic film speed, droplet spacing and the initial impact velocity. When the liquid film is thicker, more fluid enters the crown, due to the crown being unstable, the surface tension is not enough to overcome the weight of the rim at the end of the crown, resulting in droplets falling off.

Abstract:Drop impact on liquid films is relevant to many natural and industrial processes. Examples include the impact of sprayed fuel droplets on the fuel films formed from previously deposited droplets on the walls and piston head of internal combustion engines, and the impact of rain drops on ocean and wetted soil surfaces. Since the impacted drop can contain liquids with different temperature and chemical species than the impacted film, it is the motion of the merged drop and the associated mixing that initiates many post-merging thermal and chemical processes. In this paper we report an experimental study on the morphological evolution of an impacting drop inside the liquid pool after coalescence, using high speed laser induced fluorescence technique. Abstract:The head-on collision of a droplet onto a liquid layer of the same material, backed bya solid surface, was experimentally and computationally investigated, with emphasis on the transition from bouncing of the droplet to its absorption by the film for given dropletWeber number, We, and the film thickness scaled by the droplet radius, Hf. Experimental results show that while absorption is favoured with increasing We, there exists a range around Hf ≈, 1 over which this tendency is moderated. This local moderation in turn corresponds to a regime, 11 ≲ We ≲ 14, over which increasing Hf from a small value leads to a triple reversalbehaviour of absorption, bouncing, absorption again, and bouncing again. The collision dynamics including evolution of the surface contours of the droplet and film, as well as the energy budgets, were then simulated by using a front-tracking technique. For collisionsleading to absorption and partial absorption, for which part of the absorbed droplet is subsequently ejected from the film, rupture and hence merging of the interfaces were manually imposed at an instant that leads to agreement between the subsequent calculated and experimental images. The simulation satisfactorily identified the different factors influencing the observed non-monotonic response of the collision event.

Abstract:Recently, there has been renewed interest in hollow droplets impaction since its great significance for thermal spraying, the three-dimensional (3D) printing of foam material. In the present study, we numerically study the dynamic characteristics of a hollow droplet obliquely impacting the liquid film via the volume of fluid (VOF) method. The splash formation and evolution during the oblique hollow droplet impact process under different conditions are investigated. The impact angle, film thickness, and impact velocity influences are analyzed. The results demonstrate that, with the impact angle increasing, the variation trends of the crown radius on both sides are opposite. When the film thickness increases, there is a critical film thickness at which the right crown height reaches the maximum. The increasing impact velocity leads to a flow phenomenon transition from non-splashing to splashing and even to a crown. When the impact velocity reaches a certain value, the liquid film on the front side will become unsteady, which makes the crown on this side prone to rupture at the early stage of impact. The bubble deformation during the impact process under different conditions is also discussed, and the patterns of the splashing behaviour under different initial conditions are summarized.

Abstract:Drop impact on liquid surfaces is ubiquitous in many natural and industrial processes, such as soil erosion through rain drop impact, ink-jet printing, and fuel spray impacting the cylinder walls in direct-injection internal combustion engines. In this study the impact outcome of either bouncing or absorption was first experimentally mapped in the H∗-W e space, where H∗ is the liquid thickness normalized by the drop radius, and W e the drop Weber number. It is observed that there exists a critical W e cr beyond which the drop always merges with the liquid film. However, for smaller values than W e cr, the impact exhibits a nonmonotonic transition with increasing film thickness, from absorption to bouncing to absorption and finally to bouncing again. Abstract:The movements and replacement of a nanoscale drop on a horizontal surface driven by shear force from the other immiscible fluid have been investigated by hybrid atomistic-continuum modelling in this work. The interfacial interaction near the drop, which may not be fully covered by the continuum theories, is modelled by molecular dynamics for accurate capture of transport behaviour, while the bulk flow region is simulated by the lattice Boltzmann method for high efficiency. The momentum exchange between atomistic and continuum regions is realised in a buffer region to couple the multiscale effects, where we propose an artificial solid molecular layer at the outer edge of buffer region to ensure the continuity of shear force between different regions. The influences of moving wall velocity, drop size, surface tension on resistance are examined. Our results show that the resistances increase with the moving wall velocity. A larger drop leads to a larger resistance to drop moving on solid wall, and a larger resistance to bulk flow. A higher surface tension results in a higher resistance to drop movement and bulk flow resistance over the drop because of lower deformation of drop.

Abstract:A physical and mathematical model is established to simulate a single droplet impact onto a thin horizontal liquid film by using coupled Level Set and volume of fluid method, which has advantages in acquisition of interface geometrical parameters and keeping mass conservation. The evolution after the droplet impact is obtained together with isopiestic and velocity field at different parameters including impact velocity, droplet diameter and liquid film thickness. Influences of Weber number (We number), droplet size and film thickness on the crown diameter and crown height are acquired, and the results indicate that the crown diameter and height could be increased by increasing We number or by reducing film thickness. Furthermore, bubble entrainment phenomenon when the droplet impinges the liquid film are captured successfully and discussed. It is found that increment of both impact We number and droplet diameter could help the emerging of bubble rings.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a modified smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. In order to well predict the morphology change of liquid drop, the presented SPH method employs a kernel gradient correction and a coupled solid boundary treatment algorithm. An inter-particle interaction force is used to model surface tension, and an artificial stress model is used to deal with tensile instability. The process of droplet impacting on liquid film is numerically simulated by the modified SPH method, which can well predict the pressure field evolution process of the drop impacting onto the liquid film and capture the variation of the free surface at different instants. Effects of Web number and surface stress on droplet impacting are also investigated, and mechanism of droplet splashing is analyzed. It is clearly demonstrated that the modified SPH method can effectively describe the dynamics of droplet splashing and the variation of the free surface. The obtained liquid drop morphology accords well with the results from other sources.
