Abstract:Whispering-gallery-mode optical microresonators have found impactful applications in various areas due to their remarkable properties such as ultra-high quality factor (Q-factor), small mode volume, and strong evanescent field. Among these applications, controllable tuning of the optical Q-factor is vital for on-chip optical modulation and various opto-electronic devices. Here, we report an experimental demonstration with a hybrid structure formed by an ultra-high-Q microtoroid cavity and a graphene monolayer. Thanks to the strong interaction of the evanescent wave with the graphene, the structure allows the Q-factor to be controllably varied in the range of 3.9 × 105 ∼ 6.2 × 107 by engineering optical absorption via changing the gap distance in between. At the same time, a resonant wavelength shift of 32 pm was also observed. Besides, the scheme enables us to approach the critical coupling with a coupling depth of 99.6%. As potential applications in integrated opto-electronic devices, we further use the system to realize a tunable optical filter with tunable bandwidth from 116.5 MHz to 2.2 GHz as well as an optical switch with a maximal extinction ratio of 31 dB and response time of 21 ms.
A Simple Approach to Fiber-Based Tunable Microcavity with High Coupling Efficiency

Abstract:We report a simple technique for the realization of fiber-based Fabry-Pérot microcavities with large Q/V values as well as high cavity-to-fiber coupling efficiencies. The open microcavity we demonstrate consists of a flat mirror and a concave mirror on the tip of a single mode optical fiber. Combining hydrofluoric acid chemical wet etching with CO2 laser reflow, we obtain a fiber-tip atomically smooth concave surface with a diameter of 4.7 μm determined by the fiber core size. The concave surface with a spherical profile is automatically aligned with the fiber core, which enables high cavity-to-fiber power coupling efficiency (higher than 90%) with an optimal fiber-tip mirror's radius of curvature based on numerical simulation results. After distributed-Bragg-reflector coating, we have realized a wavelength-tunable open microcavity with a quality factor Q exceeding 1000 and a mode volume V of 13.6 μm3, and laser emission is demonstrated from this microcavity.

Abstract:We have measured a graphene double quantum dot device with multiple electrostatic gates that are used to enhance control to investigate it. At low temperatures, the transport measurements reveal honeycomb charge stability diagrams which can be tuned from weak to strong interdot tunnel coupling regimes. We precisely extract a large interdot tunnel coupling strength for this system allowing for the observation of tunnel-coupled molecular states extending over the whole double dot. This clean, highly controllable system serves as an essential building block for quantum devices in a nuclear-spin-free world.

Abstract:Optical resonators with high-quality factors (Q-factor) constitute the main building block for many photonic devices capitalizing on light-matter interactions, ranging from light emitters to biochemical sensors. While a high Q-factor enhances light-matter interactions, it also limits the device operation bandwidth. Here we propose and numerically analyze a generic coupling scheme to overcome the apparent trade-off. By using an orthogonal grating, broadband optical coupling into high-Q cavities of diverse geometric configurations can be achieved. As an example, the approach is applied to demonstrate over a 28-fold optical absorption enhancement across a 150 nm band around 900 nm wavelength in single-layer graphene embedded inside a Fabry-Perot cavity.
Electrical Control of the Superconducting-to-Insulating Transition in Graphene/Metal Hybrids

Abstract:Graphene is a sturdy and chemically inert material exhibiting an exposed two-dimensional electron gas of high mobility. These combined properties enable the design of graphene composites either based on covalent or non- covalent coupling of adsorbates, or on multilayered structures. These systems have exhibited novel tunable electronic properties such as bandgap- engineering, reversible metal/insulating transition or supramolecular spintronics. Tunable superconductivity is expected as well, but experimental realization is lacking. Here, we show experiments based on me tal/graphene hybrid composites, enabling the control of proximity coupling of an array of superconducting nanoparticles onto a macroscopic graphene sheet. This material allows at low temperature to tune the superconductivity down to a strongly insulating state. It results from the combination of a proximity-induced superconductivity generated by the metallic nanoparticles array with the two-dimensional and tunable metallicity of graphene. The resulting hybrid material behaves, as a whole, like a granular 2D superconductor showing universal transition threshold and localization of Cooper pairs in the insulating phase. This experiment sheds light on the emergence of superconductivity in inhomogeneous superconduc- tors, and more generally it demonstrates the potential of graphene as a versatile building-block for the realization of novel superconducting materials.

Abstract:The combination of low mass density, high frequency, and high quality-factor of mechanical resonators made of two-dimensional crystals such as graphene make them attractive for applications in force sensing/mass sensing, and exploring the quantum regime of mechanical motion. Microwave optomechanics with superconducting cavities offers exquisite position sensitivity and enables the preparation and detection of mechanical systems in the quantum ground state. Here, we demonstrate coupling between a multilayer graphene resonator with quality factors up to 220,000 and a high-$\textit{Q}$ superconducting cavity. Using thermo-mechanical noise as calibration, we achieve a displacement sensitivity of 17 fm/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$. Optomechanical coupling is demonstrated by optomechanically induced reflection (OMIR) and absorption (OMIA) of microwave photons. We observe 17 dB of mechanical microwave amplification and signatures of strong optomechanical backaction. We extract the cooperativity $C$, a characterization of coupling strength, quantitatively from the measurement with no free parameters and find $C=8$, promising for the quantum regime of graphene motion.

Abstract:Graphene double quantum dots (DQDs) open to use charge or spin degrees of freedom for storing and manipulating quantum information in this new electronic material. However, impurities and edge disorders in etched graphene nano-structures hinder the ability to control the inter-dot tunnel coupling, tC, the most important property of the artificial molecule. Here we report measurements of tC in an all-metal-side-gated graphene DQD. We find that tC can be controlled continuously about a factor of four by employing a single gate. Furthermore, tC, can be changed monotonically about another factor of four as electrons are gate-pumped into the dot one by one. The results suggest that the strength of tunnel coupling in etched graphene DQDs can be varied in a rather broad range and in a controllable manner, which improves the outlook to use graphene as a base material for qubit applications.

Abstract:We study the optomechanical coupling of a single-layer graphene with a high-Q Fabry-Perot microcavity in the membrane-in-the-middle configuration. In ordinary dissipative coupling systems, mechanical oscillators modulate the loss associated with the input coupling of the cavity mode; while in our system, the graphene oscillator couples dissipatively with the cavity mode through modulating its absorption loss. By analyzing the effects of the interband transition of a graphene suspended near the node of the cavity field, we obtain strong and tunable dissipative coupling without excessively reducing the optical quality factor. Finally, it is found that the flexural mode of the graphene could be cooled down to its ground state in the present coupling system. This study provides new insights for graphene optomechanics in the visible range.

Abstract:The interlayer coupling of twisted bilayer graphene could markedly affect its electronic band structure. A current challenge required to overcome in experiment is how to precisely control the coupling and therefore tune the electronic properties of the bilayer graphene. Here, we describe a facile method to modulate the local interlayer coupling by adsorption of single molecule magnets onto the twisted bilayer graphene and report the characterization of its electronic band structure using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The low-energy Van Hove singularities (VHSs) and superlattice Dirac cones, induced by the interlayer coupling and graphene-on-graphene moiré respectively, are observed in the tunneling spectra. Our experiment demonstrates that the energy difference of the two VHSs, which reflects the magnitude of interlayer coupling, can be tuned by the local coverage density of adsorption.
Controllable Coupling Between a Nanomechanical Resonator and a Coplanar-Waveguide Resonator Via a Superconducting Flux Qubit

Abstract:We study a tripartite quantum system consisting of a coplanar-waveguide (CPW) resonator and a nanomechanical resonator (NAMR) connected by a flux qubit, where the flux qubit has a large detuning from both resonators. By a unitary transformation and a second-order approximation, we obtain a strong and controllable (i.e., magnetic-field-dependent) effective coupling between the NAMR and the CPW resonator. Due to the strong coupling, vacuum Rabi splitting can be observed from the voltage-fluctuation spectrum of the CPW resonator. We further study the properties of single-photon transport as inferred from the reflectance or equivalently the transmittance. We show that the reflectance and the corresponding phase-shift spectra both exhibit doublet of narrow spectral features due to vacuum Rabi splitting. By tuning the external magnetic field, the reflectance and the phase shift can be varied from 0 to 1 and -pi to pi, respectively. The results indicate that this hybrid quantum system can act as a quantum router.

Abstract:Coupled nanomechanical resonators are interesting for both fundamental studies and practical applications as they offer rich and tunable oscillation dynamics. At present, the mechanical coupling in such systems is often mediated by a fixed geometry, such as a joint clamping point of the resonators or a displacement-dependent force. Here we show a graphene-integrated electromechanical system consisting of two physically separated mechanical resonators -- a comb-drive actuator and a suspended silicon beam -- that are tunably coupled by a graphene membrane. The graphene membrane, moreover, provides a sensitive electrical read-out for the two resonating systems silicon structures showing 16 different modes in the frequency range from 0.4~to 24~MHz. In addition, by pulling on the graphene membrane with an electrostatic potential applied to one of the silicon resonators, we control the mechanical coupling, quantified by the $g$-factor, from 20 kHz to 100 kHz. Our results pave the way for coupled nanoelectromechanical systems requiring controllable mechanically coupled resonators.

Abstract:Graphene distinguishes itself as a promising candidate for realizing tunable integrated photonic devices with high flexibility. We propose a set of ultracompact tunable on-chip waveguide couplers with mode-selectivity and polarization sensitivity around the telecom wavelength of 1.55 μm, under the configuration of graphene-laminated silicon waveguides patterned with gold nanoantennas. Versatile couplings can be achieved in a widely tunable fashion within a deep-subwavelength area (210 × 210 nm2), by marrying the advantages of tight field confinement in plasmonic antennas and the largely tunable carrier density of graphene. Incident light signals can be selectively coupled into different fundamental modes with good mode quality and high directionality exceeding 25 dB. Design scenarios for asymmetric couplings are presented, where the operation wavelength can be tuned across a 107-nm range around 1.55 mm by altering the chemical potential of graphene from 0 to 1.8 eV. Furthermore, the proposed schemes can be leveraged as mode-sensitive on-chip directional waveguide signal detectors with an extinction ratio over 10 dB. Our results provide a new paradigm upon graphene-assisted tunable integrated photonic applications.
Enhanced absorption of graphene with variable bandwidth in quarter-wavelength cavities

Abstract:Quarter-wavelength cavity, as a classical structure for preventing wave reflection, presents an effective way to enhance the interaction between light and material of ultrathin thickness. In this paper, we propose a method to control the bandwidth of graphene’s enhanced absorption in quarter-wavelength cavity. By varying the spacing distance between graphene and a metallic reflecting plane, which equals to an odd number of quarter-wavelengths, fundamental and higher order cavity modes are excited, whose fields couple to graphene with different spectral bandwidths, leading to bandwidth-controllable absorption in graphene. Absorption efficiencies of 9% and 40% are measured for graphene monolayer at 15° and 85° incident angles, respectively. Its absorption bandwidth varies between 52% and 10% of the central wavelength when the spacing distance between graphene and metallic reflecting plane increases from a quarter wavelength to seven quarter wavelengths. Our findings pave a way in engineering graphene for strong absorption with a controllable bandwidth, which has potential applications in tailoring spectral response of graphene-based optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Energy transfer is an essential light-matter interaction. The transfer efficiency is critical for various applications such as light-emitting, optical modulation, and the photoelectric effect. Two primary forms of light-matter energy transfer, including absorption and emission, can be enhanced in optical cavities. Both forms can reach an extremum inside the cavity according to the coupled-mode theory. Graphene conductivity at the terahertz frequency can be tuned from positive to negative, providing a suitable material to study switchable extremums of these two forms. We integrate graphene with a nested cavity where an infrared cavity is inserted in a terahertz cavity, thereby achieving terahertz perfect absorption at the static state and optimal gain under photoexcitation. Leveraging an inserted infrared cavity, we can elevate the working efficiency by strongly absorbing the infrared pump. We also numerically show the feasibility of electrically tunable extreme energy transfer. Our concept of the nested cavity can be extended to different materials and even to guided modes. A switchable synergy of loss and gain potentially enables high-contrast dynamic modulation and photonic devices with multiplexing functions.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an all-optical analog to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) on chip using coupled high-Q silica microtoroid cavities with Q-factors above 10(6). The transmission spectrum of the all-optical analog to EIT is precisely controlled by tuning the distance between the two microtoroids, as well as the detunings of the resonance frequencies of the two cavities.

Abstract:The realization of high-quality heterostructures or hybrids of graphene and superconductor is crucial for exploring various novel quantum phenomena and devices engineering. Here, the electronic transport on directly grown high-quality graphene/Mo2C vertical heterostructures with clean and sharp interface is comprehensively investigated. Owing to the strong interface coupling, the graphene layer feels an effective confinement potential well imposed by two-dimensional (2D) Mo2C crystal. Employing cross junction device geometry, a series of resonance-like magnetoresistance peaks are observed at low temperatures. The temperature and gate voltage dependences of the observed resonance peaks give evidence for geometric resonance of electron cyclotron orbits with the formed potential well. Moreover, it is found that both the amplitude of resonance peaks and conductance fluctuation exhibit different temperature-dependent behaviors below the superconducting transition temperature of 2D Mo2C, indicating the correlation of quantum fluctuations and superconductivity. This study offers a promising route toward integrating graphene with 2D superconducting materials, and establishes a new way to investigate the interplay of massless Dirac fermion and superconductivity based on graphene/2D superconductor vertical heterostructures.

Abstract:Vertical heterostructures of two-dimensional (2D) crystals have led to the observations of numerous exciting physical phenomena and presented the possibilities for technological applications, which strongly depend on the quality, interface, relative alignment, and interaction of the neighboring 2D crystals. The heterostructures or hybrids of graphene and superconductors offer a very interesting platform to study mesoscopic superconductivity and the interplay of the quantum Hall effect with superconductivity. However, so far the heterostructures of graphene and 2D superconductors are fabricated by stacking, and consequently suffer from random relative alignment, weak interfacial interaction, and unavoidable interface contaminants. Here we report the direct growth of high-quality graphene/2D superconductor (nonlayered ultrathin α-Mo2C crystal) vertical heterostructures with uniformly well-aligned lattice orientation and strong interface coupling by chemical vapor deposition. In the heterostructure, both graphene and 2D α-Mo2C crystal show no defect, and the graphene is strongly compressed. Different from the previously reported graphene/superconductor heterostructures or hybrids, the strong interface coupling leads to a phase diagram of superconducting transition with multiple voltage steps being observed in the transition regime. Furthermore, we demonstrate the realization of highly transparent Josephson junction devices based on these strongly coupled high-quality heterostructures, in which a clear magnetic-field-induced Fraunhofer pattern of the critical supercurrent is observed.

Abstract:Realization of a flexible and tunable coupling scheme among qubits is critical for scalable quantum information processing. Here, we design and characterize a tunable coupling element based on Josephson junction, which can be adapted to an all-to-all connected circuit architecture where multiple Xmon qubits couple to a common coplanar waveguide resonator. The coupling strength is experimentally verified to be adjustable from 0 MHz to about 40 MHz, and the qubit lifetime can still be up to 12 μs in the presence of the coupling element.
Enhanced optomechanical coupling between an optically levitated particle and an ultrahigh Q optical microcavity

Abstract:Exploring the dynamics of an optically levitated dielectric micro- and nanoparticle is an exciting new subject in quantum science. Recent years have witnessed rapid advancements in attaining quantum-limited optical detection and control of a nanoscale particle by coupling its motion to a high-finesse optical cavity in the resolved-sideband regime. In order to control the particle deeper in the quantum regime, it is necessary to significantly enhance the coupling between the particle and the cavity. Here, we present a novel platform that can allow for achieving this. Our system consists of a conventional optical tweezer and a toroidal optical microcavity with an ultrahigh quality (Q) factor. The optomechanical coupling between the particle and the cavity is established by placing the particle in the near field of the cavity. The significantly reduced mode volume allows us to achieve a 50-fold increase in the single photon optomechanical coupling compared to a conventional Fabry-Pérot cavity with macroscopic mirrors, while ultralow loss of the cavity brings the system close to the resolved-sideband regime. Our approach paves the way for enabling quantum experiments on levitated mesoscopic particles with high quantum cooperativity near the resolved-sideband regime.
