Abstract:To generate Cherenkov radiation (CR) in natural medium, the electron energy threshold is higher than hundreds of keV. Even though various approaches were adopted, the high-energy electrons as high as tens of keV is still required in experiment. Here we proposed to eliminate the threshold of electron energy to generate CR with the help of hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM). The analytical and simulation results indicate that, even though electron energy is lower than 0.1keV, the CR could be obtained in HMM in a visible and near-infrared frequency region. Further, the on-chip integrated threshold-less CR source, consisted with a planar electron emitter, Au-SiO2 multilayers HMM, and periodic metal nano-slits, has been realized. It is demonstrated that, with low-energy electrons (0.25-1.4keV), the CR is generated covering λ0=500~900nm. The electron energy generating CR experimentally is two~three orders of magnitude lower than that in natural media and artificial structures. As we know, this is the first on-chip integrated free electron light source benefiting from the threshold-less CR. Although less than 1% of the light energy could be coupled to free space, the total output light power still reaches 200nW, which is two orders of magnitude higher than free electron light source by using other nanostructures.

Abstract:Cherenkov radiation (CR) was one of the most famous discoveries in the last century and still has broad applications in modern physics. Recently, threshold-less and reversed CRs have attracted even more attention thanks to their unique characteristics and application prospects. Here we illustrated a threshold-less CR in vacuo by using a sheet free-electron beam (FEB) to excite an oblique-lined sub-wavelength hole array. It is achieved by setting the effective velocity of emitters-resonant modes successively excited by the sheet FEB-to be greater than the speed of light in vacuo. By letting the sub-wavelength holes line up along a designed curve, we further demonstrated a focused CR with radiation being convergent to specific focusing spots, which can be located at any designed positions in space, achieving backward (reversed) as well as forward (normal) CRs in effect. This focused CR does not have the conventional Cherenkov cone, and its intensity at the focusing spot is greatly enhanced. These newly revealed threshold-less and focused CRs may lead to broad interest and attractive applications, especially for developing integrated and focused light sources in the terahertz region. Abstract:On-chip single-photon sources are key components for integrated photonic quantum technologies. Semiconductor quantum dots can exhibit near-ideal single-photon emission, but this can be significantly degraded in on-chip geometries owing to nearby etched surfaces. A long-proposed solution to improve the indistinguishablility is to use the Purcell effect to reduce the radiative lifetime. However, until now only modest Purcell enhancements have been observed. Here we use pulsed resonant excitation to eliminate slow relaxation paths, revealing a highly Purcell-shortened radiative lifetime (22.7 ps) in a waveguide-coupled quantum dot–photonic crystal cavity system. This leads to near-lifetime-limited single-photon emission that retains high indistinguishablility (93.9%) on a timescale in which 20 photons may be emitted. Nearly background-free pulsed resonance fluorescence is achieved under π -pulse excitation, enabling demonstration of an on-chip, on-demand single-photon source with very high potential repetition rates.
Coherent, Focused, and Threshold-less Cherenkov Radiation from Two-dimensional Sub-wavelength Hole Arrays

Abstract:The threshold-less Cherenkov radiation (CR) is quite attractive due to its low-cost and compactibility. Here we proposed a new way to generate the coherent and threshold-less CR by using a sheet free-electron beam (FEB) to drive an oblique-lined sub-wavelength hole array (SHA). By periodically repeating the oblique-lined SHAs in the beam-moving direction, we could get a unique two-dimensional SHA (2D SHA), from which the Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR) can also be generated. The CR, combined with SPR, will become a focused directional coherent radiation with highly enhanced intensity.

Abstract:In conventional materials, Cherenkov radiation (CR) due to a moving charged particle is associated with a broad frequency range and velocity threshold. Here, we show that using a periodic grating structure, which possesses photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs) and quasi-BICs, unusual CR can be generated in a very narrow frequency band at a particle velocity below the common threshold. This effect arises from an interesting light-amplification process in the BIC structure, which can dramatically improve the efficiencies of evanescent-to-propagating wave conversion and CR generation. Our results present a mechanism for realizing Cherenkov lasing at low electron velocity and may find applications in compact free-electron lasers.

Abstract:Cherenkov radiation (CR) is an electromagnetic radiation emitted by charged particles traveling through a dielectric medium at a speed faster than the phase velocity of light. CR plays an important role in the fields of particle detection, biomedicine and electromagnetic-radiation source. Recently, metamaterials demonstrate their novel mechanical, acoustic, and optical properties by delicately designing the structures and materials. In metamaterials, the electromagnetic properties, such as wave propagation, coupling, and radiation, could be flexibly manipulated. Thus, it is expected that the combination of vacuum electronics and micro- & nanophotonics would result in numerous novel phenomena and effects by having free electrons interacting with metamaterials. In this paper, we firstly review the concept and generation mechanism of CR. Then, recent research advances in the CR generation by using different types of metamaterials are reviewed, including threshold-less CR in hyperbolic metamaterials, reverse CR in negative metamaterials, CR lasing based on high Q-factor metamaterials and Smith-Purcell radiation manipulation with metasurfaces. The unique characteristics and interesting mechanisms of CR based on these metamaterials are elaborated. The research and development of interaction between free electrons and various metamaterials open up possibilities for realizing novel integrated free-electron devices.

Abstract:An electron-velocity-thresholdless terahertz (THz) Cherenkov radiation (CR) based on equivalent graphene plasmonic metamaterial (EGPMs) is proposed in this paper. A hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) with hyperbolic equal frequency contours (EFC) is designed and demonstrated by periodically stacking the EGPSs, which mimics the EM characteristics of optical graphene in the THz band and can be used to imitate diverse optical graphene metamaterials. When a sheet electron beam flies over the surface, the electron-velocity-thresholdless CR will be generated since the HMM theoretically supports the infinite wavevector. The field distributions of the generated CR are analyzed for different electron energy values, and the results demonstrate the thresholdless CR phenomenon. The proposed thresholdless scheme may foster the application of the free-electron-driven integrated on-chip THz radiation source.
Narrowband Diffuse Thermal Emitter Based on Surface Phonon Polaritons

Abstract:Abstract Thermal emission engineering with ability to realize spectral and spatial selection has attracted great attention in recent years. Nanophotonic control of thermal radiation has demonstrated narrowband thermal emitter but with high angle-sensitivity and diffuse thermal emitter but with low quality factor (Q). Here, we demonstrate a simultaneous narrowband, diffuse thermal emitter consisting of 80 nm (<λ/100) thick Ge nanostructures on a silicon carbide (SiC) phononic material. Based on surface phonon polaritons, a spectral coherent emission with a high Q factor of 101 is achieved at ∼10.9 μm wavelength in experiment. Furthermore, this phonon-mediated nanostructure provides spatial control with strong diffuse thermal emission with a full angle at half maximum of 70°. Additionally, the emission wavelength and intensity are tuned by replacing Ge with phase change materials (Ge2Sb2Te5 and In3SbTe2). The designed narrowband diffuse thermal emitter offers new perspectives for the engineering of emission and paves the way for infrared applications, including thermal sources, radiative cooling, infrared sensing, and thermal photovoltaics.

Abstract:Narrow-band THz coherent Cherenkov radiation can be driven by a subpicosecond electron bunch traveling along the axis of a hollow cylindrical dielectric-lined waveguide. We present a scheme of compact THz radiation source based on the photocathode rf gun. On the basis of our analytic result, the subpicosecond electron bunch with high charge (800 pC) can be generated directly in the photocathode rf gun. According to the analytical and simulated results, a narrow emission spectrum peaked at 0.24 THz with 2 megawatt (MW) peak power is expected to gain in the proposed scheme (the length of the facility is about 1.2 m).

On-Chip Thermionic Electron Emitter Based on Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube

Abstract:Carbon nanotube is regarded as a promising material for electron emission because of its excellent properties, such as high electrical and thermal conductivity, good chemical stability, high aspect ratio and high melting point. Here, we report the scaling down of thermionic emitter to the nanoscale by using microfabrication technologies and a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT), the thinnest conducting filament we can use. The CNT nanoscale thermionic electron emitters (NTEEs) are found to exhibit a low working voltage of a few volts and controllable and repeatable emission performances in a low vacuum (~10 -2 Pa). Importantly, the emission density of the CNT NTEE is measured to be ~10 4 A/cm 2 , which is superior to that of traditional thermionic emitters. With the excellent emission performance and capability to be integrated on silicon chip, the CNT NTEE demonstrate tremendous potential in on-chip electron source applications.

Abstract:Thermionic electron emitter, a critical component in vacuum electronic devices, usually suffers from bulky size, difficulty to integrate, and slow temporal response. Here, to overcome these problems, we fabricate and test a new miniature electron emitter: on-chip thermionic electron emitter arrays based on horizontally aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes. The devices are fabricated and integrated on a Si chip with microfabrication technologies, providing compactness as well as fast temporal response. Emitter arrays with a packing density of up to similar to 0.4 x 10(7) emitters/cm(2) and an emission density of 1.73 mA/cm(2) at a bias voltage of 2.64 V are realized. The turn-on/off response times of the devices are measured to be similar to 150/500 ns, which are 5 orders of magnitude faster than those of their bulky counterparts. The advantages of on-chip nature, high degree of integration, and fast temporal response make the thermionic emitter arrays promising in miniature vacuum electronic devices.

Abstract:We present the theory, concept and design of an efficient, megawatt coherent Cherenkov radiation source based on a two-dimensional periodic surface lattice (2D-PSL) cavity combined with a novel energy recovery system for the generation of highly efficient (> 50%) single-frequency radiation. We demonstrate the scalability of the transverse dimension of the 2D-PSL cavity of the Cherenkov source and thus the potential for efficient, continuous-wave, high-power (> 1 MW) operation; fundamental to the eventual realization of clean, fusion energy. These new sources, with the capacity to operate in the 0.1-10THz range, hold strong promise to address the long-standing "Terahertz gap". By combining a Cherenkov oscillator driven by a non-gyrating beam with an innovative four-stage depressed collector energy recovery system, the overall device efficiency can be increased to be competitive with gyrotrons in the requirements for heating and current drive in fusion plasma. In these Cherenkov devices, the frequency independence of the magnetic guide field enables advantageous frequency scaling without deployment constraints, making them especially attractive for high-impact applications in fusion science, turbulence diagnostics, non-destructive testing and biochemical spectroscopy. The novel energy recovery techniques presented in this paper have broad applicability to many electron-beam driven devices, bringing revolutionary potential to future THz source technologies.

Abstract:Microscale infrared thermal emitters are highly demanded in a variety of applications such as micro-molecular thermal sensing and micro-thermal imaging. In this paper, we propose a micro-meta-cavity array through combining nanohole metasurfaces and Fabry–Pérot (FP) cavity. Based on this design, integrated multiband micro-thermal emitters covering 7 − 9 μm and 10 − 14 μm wavelength ranges with high spatial resolution near wavelength scale has been theoretically and experimentally demonstrated simultaneously, providing the possibility for microscale infrared sources. In addition, narrow thermal emission bandwidth is enabled by the interaction between the resonant modes of metasurface and the FP cavity mode in meta-cavity. The emission features of each meta-cavity are investigated and analyzed through thermal imaging. Furthermore, polarization, wavelength and spatial multiplexing thermal emission with high spatial resolution is also experimentally demonstrated utilizing nanohole patterns. We anticipate that this thermal emission microchip can be possibly employed in micro-molecular sensing and micro-thermal imaging in the future.

Abstract:The usually continuous and incoherent Cerenkov radiation (CR) is converted into coherent and narrow-band radiation from within a dielectric-line cavity excited by a dc electron beam. We have studied the self-oscillating behavior of a device that operates at $\sim22$ GHz by calculating explicitly the electron self-bunching and radiation growing processes. The nonlinear gain of the device and the radiation spectrum are also calculated. The agreement to the experiments indicates that the developed formalism could be used in designing a THz source based on cavity Cerenkov radiation.

Abstract:Abstract Cherenkov radiation (CR) excited by fast charges can serve as on-chip light sources with a nanoscale footprint and broad frequency range. The reversed CR, which usually occurs in media with the negative refractive index or negative group-velocity dispersion, is highly desired because it can effectively separate the radiated light from fast charges thanks to the obtuse radiation angle. However, reversed CR at the mid-infrared remains challenging due to the significant loss of conventional artificial structures. Here we observe mid-infrared analogue polaritonic reversed CR in a natural van der Waals (vdW) material (i.e., α-MoO 3 ), whose hyperbolic phonon polaritons exhibit negative group velocity. Further, the real-space image results of analogue polaritonic reversed CR indicate that the radiation distributions and angles are closely related to the in-plane isofrequency contours of α-MoO 3 , which can be further tuned in the heterostructures based on α-MoO 3 . This work demonstrates that natural vdW heterostructures can be used as a promising platform of reversed CR to design on-chip mid-infrared nano-light sources.

Abstract:The Cherenkov radiation induced by megavolt X-ray beams of a medical linear accelerator is highly intense in blue and ultraviolet lights. This poses a challenge for in vivo imaging, which favors longer wavelengths. However, using quantum dots with a large Stokes shift, we converted the Cherenkov photons to fluorescent photons in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window. A system was designed to provide shielding for the NIR-II camera, and high quality NIR-II CELI signal was acquired. The NIR-II CELI of X-ray beams was shown at various depths, and the condition to trigger it was also studied. Animal experiments showed this technique could visualize the delivery of X-ray radiation in mice qualitatively. We concluded that CELI induced by megavolt X-ray beams in the NIR-II window possesses a great potential as a quality control tool in radiotherapy.

Abstract:The energy thresholding characteristic of carbon dioxide (CO2) Cherenkov gas is significant for the detection of fusion $\gamma $ -rays. In this article, the energy thresholding characteristic of CO2 (at 300 K and 4.02 atm.) gas is experimentally calibrated by a pulse electron beam with picosecond duration time and adjustable energies. Three mirrors with the ultraviolet reflectivity are used to make an off-axis light collection system. For electron energy of 10 MeV (above the Cherenkov threshold energy), the collected pulse photon spectrum has good agreement with the theoretical spectrum of Cherenkov radiation, confirming that Cherenkov radiation dominates collected photons than non-Cherenkov sources. The threshold energy resolution (12/7.5 MeV) is improved to ~104, an order higher than the reported value of ~103. The improvement on the threshold energy resolution of CO2 gas is mainly attributed to the ultraviolet mirrors, suppressing lights with a wavelength higher than 280 nm. This work can provide significant support for the further application of the Cherenkov detector in the fusion $\gamma $ -ray diagnosis.
