Abstract:Recent years have witnessed growing interest in the development of small-footprint lasers for potential applications in small-volume sensing and on-chip optical communications. Surface-plasmons, electromagnetic modes evanescently confined to metal-dielectric interfaces, offer an effective route to achieving lasing at nanometer-scale dimensions when resonantly amplified in contact with a gain-medium. Here, we achieve visible frequency ultra-narrow linewidth lasing at room-temperature by leveraging surface plasmons propagating in an open Fabry-Perot cavity formed by a flat metal surface coated with a subwavelength-thick layer of optically-pumped gain medium and orthogonally bound by a pair of flat metal sidewalls. Low perturbation transmission-configuration sampling of the lasing plasmon mode is achieved via an evanescently coupled recessed nanoslit, opening the way to high-figure-of-merit refractive-index sensing of analytes interacting with the open cavity.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in the development of small-footprint lasers for potential applications in small-volume sensing and on-chip optical communications. Surface plasmons-electromagnetic modes evanescently confined to metal-dielectric interfaces-offer an effective route to achieving lasing at nanometer-scale dimensions when resonantly amplified in contact with a gain medium. We achieve narrow-linewidth visible-frequency lasing at room temperature by leveraging surface plasmons propagating in an open Fabry-Perot cavity formed by a flat metal surface coated with a subwavelength-thick layer of optically pumped gain medium and orthogonally bound by a pair of flat metal sidewalls. We show how the lasing threshold and linewidth can be lowered by incorporating a low-profile tapered grating on the cavity floor to couple the excitation beam into a pump surface plasmon polariton providing a strong modal overlap with the gain medium. Low-perturbation transmission-configuration sampling of the lasing plasmon mode is achieved via an evanescently coupled recessed nanoslit, opening the way to high-figure of merit refractive index sensing of analytes interacting with the open metallic trench.

Abstract:Lasers are nowadays widely used in industry, in hospitals and in many devices that we have at home. Random laser development is challenging given its high threshold and low integration. Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) can improve random laser characteristics because of its ability to control diffraction. In this study, we establish a random laser structural model with silicon-based parcel GaN nanowires. The GaN nanowire gain and enhanced surface plasmon increase population inversion level. Our laser model is based on random particle scattering feedback mechanism, nanowire use, and surface plasmon enhancement effect, which causes stochastic laser emergence. Analysis shows that the SPP mode and nanowire waveguides coupled in the dielectric layer of low refractive index can store light energy like a capacitor under low refractive index clearance. The waveguide mode field area and limiting factors show that the modeled laser can achieve sub-wavelength constraints of the output light field. We also investigate emergent laser performance for a more limited light field capacity and lower threshold.

Abstract:Manipulating stimulated‐emission light in nanophotonic devices on scales smaller than their emission wavelengths to meet the requirements for optoelectronic integrations is a challenging but important step. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are one of the most promising candidates for sub‐wavelength optical confinement. In this study, based on the principle of surface plasmon amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation (SPASER), III‐Nitride‐based plasmonic nanolaser with hybrid metal–oxide–semiconductor (MOS) structures is designed. Using geometrically elliptical nanostructures fabricated by nanoimprint lithography, elliptical nanolasers able to demonstrate single‐mode and multimode lasing with an optical pumping power density as low as 0.3 kW cm−2 at room temperature and a quality Q factor of up to 123 at a wavelength of ≈490 nm are achieved. The ultralow lasing threshold is attributed to the SPP‐coupling‐induced strong electric‐field‐confinement in the elliptical MOS structures. In accordance with the theoretical and experimental results, the size and shape of the nanorod are the keys for manipulating hybridization of the plasmonic and photonic lasing modes in the SPASER. This finding provides innovative insight that will contribute to realizing a new generation of optoelectronic and information devices.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) nanolaser, which can achieve all-optical circuits, is a major research topic in the field of micro light source. In this work, we proposed a novel double-mode SPP nanolaser which is consisted of InGaAsP high-index dielectric, Ag metal, and T-shape MgF2 low-index dielectric. The best performances of the proposed waveguide can be obtained in the conditions of λ = 675 nm, R = 70 nm, Gap = 3 nm, and w = 2 nm, which is corresponded the incident wavelength, radius of nanowires, gap, and width, respectively. In that conditions, the mode area and threshold can be reached at 0.05 λ2 and 1.23 × 104 cm−1. Furthermore, the propagation distance and the confinement factor can reach 1200 nm and 0.33, respectively. It shows that the proposed device has significant potential in ultrahigh density plasmonic and photonic integrated circuit.

Abstract:We demonstrate novel plasmon resonator geometries consisting of ultra-smooth metal surfaces that support surface plasmon polariton modes exhibiting record-high quality factors in the visible frequency range. The resonators are utilized to achieve record narrow-linewidth, low-threshold surface-plasmon-polariton lasing at optical frequencies, as well as exhibit high figure-of-merit sensing. The lasing threshold of the plasmon-laser was further minimized by leveraging grating-coupled plasmons to pump the lasing-plasmons with strong spatial overlap and minimum perturbation. The results predict potential applications in small-volume optical sensing or energy-efficient coherent on-chip optical sources.

Abstract:By engaging a compact asymmetric single slit coated with a photorefractive polymer, surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) generation was efficiently controlled by a pump beam. In the structure, the nonlinear light-matter interaction is enhanced because of the cavity effect, which increases the sensitivity of SPPs to the surrounding dielectric. By variation of the real part of the refractive index together with an interferometric configuration, high on/off switching ratios are achieved. Moreover, the SPP generation and modulation processes are integrated in the same asymmetric single slit, which makes the device ultracompact. Experimentally, a high on/off switching ratio of >20 dB and phase variation of >π were observed with the device lateral dimension of only about 2 μm.

Abstract:Laser-induced bubbles are utilized by Jianjun Chen, Qihuang Gong, and co-workers in article number 1600545 to widely tune surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Experimentally, a modulation depth of 18 dB below the critical pump intensity and a wavelength change of about Δλ = −200 nm for Δn = −0.333 above the critical pump intensity are achieved. This large index variation brought about by the laser-induced bubbles can greatly decrease the difficulty in designing tunable plasmonic devices.

Abstract:Surface plasmons have robust and strong confinement to the light field which is beneficial for the light-matter interaction. Surface plasmon amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (SPACER) has the potential to be integrated on the semiconductor chip as a compact coherent light source, which can play an important role in further extension of Moore's law. In this study, we demonstrate the localized surface plasmon lasing at room temperature in the communication band using metallic nanoholes as the plasmonic nanocavity and InP nanowires as the gain medium. Optimizing laser performance has been demonstrated by coupling between two metallic nanoholes which adds another degree of freedom for manipulating the lasing properties. Our plasmonic nanolasers exhibit lower power consumption, smaller mode volumes, and higher spontaneous emission coupling factors due to enhanced light-matter interactions, which are very promising in the applications of high-density sensing and photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:We propose a tunable unidirectional long-range surface plasmon polaritons (LRSPP) launcher based on subwavelength metallic nanoslits in the visible range. The direction of the generated LRSPPs could be tuned simply by varying the incident angles. The extinction ratio reaches up to 28 dB with a wide angular width of 30 degrees. The influences of the launcher geometry on its performance are investigated in this study as well. The broadband property of the launcher is also demonstrated.

Abstract:We study the generation of surface plasmon polariton and its extraction efficiency from a microdisk-based plasmonic source to a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide. The field distribution is no longer a whispering gallery mode commonly found in microdisk lasers but hybridized with surface plasmon polariton. We observe the steady-state intensity of the surface plasmon polariton mode inside the plasmonic microdisk structure at 1.47- μm wavelength. This field intensity is extracted efficiently to a MIM plasmonic waveguide through a nanometer gap. The extraction efficiency reaches 60%.

Abstract:The wide- range tunable all- optical plasmonic devices are of importance for the multifunctional photonic circuits of high densities. Here, the laserinduced bubbles are utilized to widely tune the surface plasmon polaritons ( SPPs) in the metallic hole array. Because of the bubbles generation under a pump beam, the equivalent refractive index of the dielectric medium adjacent to the metal surface decreases. This decrease blue- shifts the transmission spectrum of the hole array. Experimentally, a modulation depth of 18 dB below the critical pump intensity and an index variation of Delta n = - 0.333 corresponding to a wavelength shift of about Delta lambda = -200 nm above the critical pump intensity are achieved. Moreover, the transmission intensity at lambda = 870 nm can be tuned to cover the whole range from the peak intensity to the valley intensity of the hole array by controlling the size of the bubble. Such a large index variation (Delta n = - 0.333) and wavelength change (Delta lambda approximate to -200 nm) can greatly decrease the designing difficulty of the tunable plasmonic devices. Thus, the laser- induced bubbles under low pump intensities may find important applications, such as efficient modulating as well as tunable color filter, focusing, and imaging with broadband responses.

Abstract:Constrained by large ohmic and radiation losses, plasmonic nanolasers operated at visible regime are usually achieved either with a high threshold (102–104 MW cm−2) or at cryogenic temperatures (4–120 K). Particularly, the bending-back effect of surface plasmon (SP) dispersion at high energy makes the SP lasing below 450 nm more challenging. Here we demonstrate the first strong room temperature ultraviolet (~370 nm) SP polariton laser with an extremely low threshold (~3.5 MW cm−2). We find that a closed-contact planar semiconductor–insulator–metal interface greatly lessens the scattering loss, and more importantly, efficiently promotes the exciton–SP energy transfer thus furnishes adequate optical gain to compensate the loss. An excitation polarization-dependent lasing action is observed and interpreted with a microscopic energy-transfer process from excitons to SPs. Our work advances the fundamental understanding of hybrid plasmonic waveguide laser and provides a solution of realizing room temperature UV nanolasers for biological applications and information technologies. Surface plasmon lasers could improve our ability to generate and use light at nanometre scales, but they regularly suffer from optical losses that make them impractical, particularly at ultraviolet wavelengths. Zhang et al.demonstrate a low-threshold surface plasmon laser that overcomes this problem.

Abstract:In this paper we demonstrate how an elliptically shaped semiconductor microcavity can be used to generate surface plasmons (SP) mode by pumping current and injecting optical pulse. After achieving stable lasing mode, external magnetic field is applied to a small elliptical confined area on the elliptical microcavity. The applied magnetic field produces Lorentz torque and "pushes" the electrons to the edge of the microcavity. Strong electron plasma is built up on the boundary of the microcavity and air interface as more electrons accumulate. The laser light source interacts with the electron plasma at the boundary of microcavity and excites surface plasmon mode. The direct excitation of SPP modes could be used to extract the laser light from elliptical microcavity source and results in a lower coupling loss and higher efficient small coupling system.
Ultra-broadband and Efficient Surface Plasmon Polariton Launching Through Metallic Nanoslits of Subwavelength Period.

Abstract:Ultra-broadband, efficient and unidirectional surface plasmon polariton (SPP) launching is of great concern in plasmonic devices and circuits. To address this challenge, a novel method adopting deep-subwavelength slits of subwavelength period (λSPP/4 ~ λSPP/3) in a thick metal film and under backside illumination is proposed. A new band pattern featuring broadband and wide angular characteristics, which is due to the coupling of the zeroth-order SPP resonance at the superstrate–metal interface and the first-order SPP resonance at the metal–substrate interface, is observed for the first time in the dispersion diagram. Unidirectional SPP launching efficiency of ~50%, ultra-broad bandwidth of up to 780 nm, covering the entire optical fiber communication bands and relatively wide angular range of 7° are achieved. This remarkable efficient, ultra-broadband and wide angular performance is demonstrated by carefully designed experiments in the near infrared regime, showing good agreement with numerical results.

Abstract:We have observed laser-like emission of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) decoupled to the glass prism in an attenuated total reflection setup. SPPs were excited by optically pumped molecules in a polymeric film deposited on the top of the silver film. Stimulated emission was characterized by a distinct threshold in the input-output dependence and narrowing of the emission spectrum. The observed stimulated emission and corresponding to it compensation of the metallic absorption loss by gain enables many applications of metamaterials and nanoplasmonic devices.

Abstract:Metallic nanostructures provide a toolkit for the generation of coherent light below the diffraction limit. Plasmonic based lasing relies on the population inversion of emitters (such as organic fluorophores) along with feedback provided by plasmonic resonances. In this regime, known as weak light matter coupling, the radiative characteristics of the system can be described by the Purcell effect. Strong light matter coupling between the molecular excitons and electromagnetic field generated by the plasmonic structures leads to the formation of hybrid quasi-particles known as plasmon exciton polaritons (PEPs). Due to the bosonic character of these quasi particles, exciton polariton condensation can lead to laser-like emission at much lower threshold powers than in conventional photon lasers. Here, we observe PEP lasing through a dark plasmonic mode in an array of metallic nanoparticles with a low threshold in an optically pumped organic system. Interestingly, the threshold power of the lasing is reduced by increasing the degree of light matter coupling in spite of the degradation of the quantum efficiency of the active material, highlighting the ultrafast dynamic responsible for the lasing, i.e., stimulated scattering. These results demonstrate a unique roomtemperature platform for exploring the physics of exciton polaritons in an open cavity architecture and pave the road toward the integration of this on-chip lasing device with the current photonics and active metamaterial planar technologies.

Abstract:Using finite-difference time-domain simulations, we designed a high-quality-factor "cup" resonator for surface-plasmon-polaritons operating at visible frequencies. By introducing a 4-level gain medium into the cup-structure, we simulated the lasing action of this novel plasmon laser.
