Abstract:We demonstrate layered superlensing in two-dimensional photonic crystals structured by both square and triangular lattices. In virtue of equifrequency contour analysis and FDTD calculation, both near field and far field imaging are displayed. Layered superlensing consisting of only triangular lattice photonic crystal is also studied and it exhibits more flexibility than the single layer counterpart. That is, the objective distance can be changed freely while keeping the image distance constant and vice versa. Hence, farther field imaging is achieved.

Abstract:Semi-Dirac cones, a type of unique dispersion relation, always exhibit a series of interesting transport properties, such as electromagnetic topological transitions and anisotropic electromagnetic transmission. Recently, dual-band semi-Dirac cones have been found in three-dimensional photonic crystals, presenting great potential in electromagnetic wave regulation. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no report on dual-band semi-Dirac cones and their applications in two-dimensional photonic crystals, and most of two-dimensional systems have only realized semi-Dirac cones at a single frequency. Therefore, we are to realize dual-band semi-Dirac cones in two-dimensional photonic crystals. In this work, a type of two-dimensional photonic crystal that comprises a square lattice of elliptical cylinders embedded in air is proposed. By rotating the elliptical cylinders and adjusting their sizes appropriately, accidental degeneracy at two different frequencies is achieved simultaneously in the center of the Brillouin zone. Using \begin{document}${\boldsymbol{k}} \cdot {\boldsymbol{p}}$\end{document} perturbation theory, the dispersion relations near the two degenerate points are proved to be nonlinear in one direction, and linear in other directions. These results indicate that the double accidental degenerate points are two semi-Dirac points with different frequencies, and two different semi-Dirac cones, i.e. dual-band semi-Dirac cones, are realized simultaneously in our designed photonic crystal. More interestingly, the dual-band semi-Dirac cones exhibit opposite linear and nonlinear dispersion relation along the major axis and the minor axis of the ellipse, respectively. And our photonic crystal can be equivalent to an impedance-matched double-zero index material in the direction of linear dispersion and a single-zero index material in the direction of nonlinear dispersion, which is demonstrated by the perfect transmission in the straight waveguide and wavefront shaping capabilities of electromagnetic waves. Based on the different properties of the equivalent zero-refractive-indices near the frequencies of two semi-Dirac point, the designed Y-type waveguide can be used to realize frequency separation by leading out the plane waves of different frequencies along different ports. We believe that our work is meaningful in broadening the exploration of the band structures of two-dimensional photonic crystals and providing greater convenience for regulating electromagnetic waves.

Abstract:Research on the remarkable characteristics of topological phases and topological phase transitions in various topological systems has been performed. In this paper, we propose a two-dimensional topological system composed of triangle photonic crystals (PCs) with C-3 point group symmetry, which hosts both regularly multiple fourfold-degenerate double Dirac cones and topological transitions in all-dielectric PC systems. By applying the tight-binding model to our system, we reveal the mechanism for topological transitions in the present configuration manufactured of conventional silicon material. Topological edge states at the common boundary of two different topological regions are demonstrated, which indicates that electromagnetic wave can propagate unidirectionally and robustly along the boundary with eximious transmission performance. Further, we manifest that topological edge states characterized by pseudospin-dependent unidirectional edge transport and have robustness against commonly minor defects. This flexible topological system demonstrates more abundant physics principles compared with previous research, which can be used to explore different topological phenomena and be implemented in integrated optical devices.

Abstract:Multi-refraction effects with one polarization in a two-dimensional triangular photonic crystal (PhC) were systematically studied by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. The more complicated refraction behaviors can be excited in the higher band regions based on the intricate undulation of one band or the overlap of different bands. A novel non-handedness effect is proposed for the first time with group velocity perpendicular to phase velocity. Furthermore, triple refraction phenomena and special collimation effects of symmetrical positive-negative refraction with the loose incident conditions have been found in different band regions of this PhC. These unique features will provide us with more understanding of electromagnetic wave propagation in PhCs and give important guideline for the design of new type optical devices.

Abstract:To research the propagation of electromagnetic fields in a two-dimensional(2D) photonic crystal,we investigate the negative refraction phenomenon of an incident Gaussian beam with some wavelengths and incident angles by means of numerical simulations,where the plane wave expansion(PWE) and 2D Finite Difference Time Domain(FDTD) methods are applied,and because of self-guiding in photonic crystal,the width of the beam will not be expanded.Moreover,we study the unique dispersive properties and super-prism effect in a 2D triangle lattice photonic crystal,these dispersive properties are caused by band folding,band crossing,and band deformations in the vicinity of mode gaps and bandgaps.The results obtained in this paper are of great significance to wavelength demultiplexers based on the superprism phenomena.

Abstract:Over the past few years, zero refraction (ZR) represents an important breakthrough in field of distinctive dynamic optical beam tuning for double-zero-index (media with zero relative permittivity and permeability) photonic crystals (PCs). Because accidental ZR effects for conventional PCs is sensitive to the structural or refractive index parameters, how to enhance the robustness of ZR design is vital for applications. Here, we report a pioneering wave property that reveals a non-accidental Dirac-like cone dispersion composed of low- or high-energy bands, corresponding to dual-insensitive ZR effects for both transverse magnetic and transverse electric polarizations based on the same annular PCs. The performance of non-accidental ZR is simultaneously based on refractive index-insensitivity and structural- insensitivity, attributed to a satisfactory filling ratio.
Optical Phase Conjugation Enhancement in One-Dimensional Nonlinear Photonic Crystals Containing Single-Negative Materials

Abstract:We present a theoretical study of optical phase conjugation by degenerate four-wave mixing in one-dimensional photonic crystals containing two kinds of single-negative materials. Compared to usual photonic crystals with the same thickness and third-order nonlinear susceptibility (chi(3)), the generation efficiency of the optical phase-conjugate wave can be enhanced by nearly 3 orders of magnitude. Distinct from the band-edge state in usual photonic crystals, the enhancement is caused by the strong field localized at each interface of two types of single-negative materials. Owing to the unique properties of the band edge of the zero-effective-phase gap that is insensitive to the angle of incidence, the optical phase-conjugate wave can be generated efficiently in a wide range of angle of incidence. Abstract:A new type of conical second-harmonic generation was discovered in a 2D ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(2)}$ photonic crystal---a hexagonally poled ${\mathrm{L}\mathrm{i}\mathrm{T}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ crystal. It reveals the presence of another type of nonlinear interaction---a scattering involved optical parametric generation in a nonlinear medium. Such a nonlinear interaction can be significantly enlarged in a modulated ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(2)}$ structure by a quasi-phase-matching process. The conical beam records the spatial distribution of the scattering signal and discloses the structure information and symmetry of the 2D ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(2)}$ photonic crystal.
Realization of type-II double-zero-index photonic crystals

Abstract:Some photonic crystals (PCs) with Dirac-like conical dispersions exhibit the property of double zero refractive index (that is, both epsilon and mu near zero (EMNZ)), wherein the electromagnetic waves have an infinite effective wavelength and do not experience any spatial phase change. The Dirac-like cones that support EMNZ are previously thought to present only at the center of the Brillouin zone ($\Gamma$ point) with a zero wavevector (we refer to as type-I EMNZ), which is constrained by the proportional relationship between phase refractive index and wavevector ($n=kc/\omega$). Here, we demonstrate the existence of an anomalous type-II EMNZ in PCs, which is associated with the Dirac-like point at off-$\Gamma$ points. By introducing a wave modulation approach, we theoretically elucidate its physical mechanism, and resolve the paradox of type-II EMNZ with non-zero wavevectors. We then fabricate a type-II EMNZ PC operating at the X point, and experimentally demonstrate that both its effective permittivity and permeability are zero at the Dirac-like point. Type-II EMNZ PCs exhibit a range of intriguing phenomena, including angle-selective transmission, wavefront flattening, a 180$^{\circ}$ phase shift upon transmission, and waveguiding with natural zero radiation loss. The extraordinary properties of type-II EMNZ PCs may open new avenues for the development of angle-selective optical filters, directional light sources, phase-controlled optical switches, ultracompact photonic circuits, nanolasers, and on-chip nonlinear enhancement.

Abstract:We present and experimentally validate self-collimation in planar photonic crystals as a new means of achieving structureless confinement of light in optical devices. We demonstrate the ability to arbitrarily guide and route light by exploiting the dispersive characteristics of the photonic crystal. Propagation loss as low as 2.17 dB/mm is measured, and the experimental validation of routing structures are presented.

Abstract:It is shown, for the first time, that the Zitterbewegung of photons can appear near the Dirac point in a two-dimensional photonic crystal. The superiority of such a phenomenon for photons is that it can be found in different scaling structures with wide frequency regions. It can be observed by measuring the time dependence of the transmission coefficient through photonic crystal slabs. Thus, it is particularly suited for experimentally observing this effect. We have observed such a phenomenon by exact numerical simulations, confirming a long-standing theoretical prediction.

A scale-invariant large-area single-mode topological photonic cavity

Abstract:Abstract Emergent collective modes in lattices give birth to many intriguing physical phenomena in condensed matter physics. Among these collective modes, large area modes typically feature small level spacings, whilst a single mode tends to be spatially tightly confined. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a unique scale-invariant, large-area, and single-mode topological cavity mode in a two-dimensional photonic crystal. This mode emerges from the hybridization of the large-area fundamental Dirac mode and in-gap topological corner modes. Remarkably, we find that the scale-invariant, large-area, and single-mode topological cavity mode possesses unique chiralities and with a tunable mode area under the change of the mass term of the inner topological nontrivial lattice. We experimentally observe such topological cavity modes in a 2D photonic system and demonstrate the robustness by introducing disorders in the cavity structure. Our findings have propelled the forefront of higher-order topology research, transitioning it from single-lattice systems to multi-lattice systems and may support promising potential applications, particularly in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers.

Abstract:We observed conical second-harmonic generation in a one-dimension anomalous-dispersion-like medium, which manifests itself as scattering-assisted nonlinear interaction via quasi-phase-matching sum frequency process. The parameters for the ring-shaped second harmonic beam are analyzed experimentally and theoretically, which disclose the structure information of the nonlinear photonic crystal and imply potential applications as characterization methods. Furthermore, by varying the angles of incident beam, the conical beam can be significantly enhanced owing to collinear nonlinear coupling between the input beam and the scattering light.

Abstract:The origin of spin-orbit interaction of light at a conventional optical interface lies in the transverse nature of the photon polarization: The polarizations associated with the plane-wave components experience slightly different rotations in order to satisfy the transversality after reflection or refraction. Recent advances in topological photonic materials provide crucial opportunities to reexamine the spin-orbit interaction of light at the unique optical interface. Here, we establish a general model to describe the spin-orbit interaction of light in the photonic Dirac metacrystal. We find a giant photonic spin Hall effect near the Dirac points when a Gaussian beam impinges at the interface of the photonic Dirac metacrystal. The giant photonic spin Hall effect is attribute to the strong spin-orbit interaction of light, which manifests itself as the large polarization rotations of different plane-wave components. We believe that these results may provide insight into the fundamental properties of the spin-orbit interaction of light in the topological photonic systems.

Type-II Dirac Point and Extreme Dispersion in One-Dimensional Plasmonic-Dielectric Crystals with Off-Axis Propagation

Abstract:Dirac cones exhibit linear crossing dispersion, which results in extraordinary topological properties in the energy bands. When the dispersion around the Dirac points is tilted, type-II or type-III Dirac points are present, which lead to intriguing transport phenomena. With the off-axis wave vector, a two-dimensional (2D) momentum space for one-dimensional (1D) crystals can be constructed. In this work, we revealed that the band structure in the extended 2D momentum space of carefully designed 1D plasmonic-dielectric crystals can be tuned to be highly tilted, forming type-II Dirac cones. In particular, an approximately upright dispersion can be achieved, which is referred to as a class-II Dirac point. Gapless interface states occur across the interface between two connected lattices formed by two distinct inversion-symmetry-broken crystals (i.e., type A and type B). The tilt of the band structure has a crucial influence on the formation of interface states and their sensitivity to the period, which results from the extraordinary properties of the surface impedance in the bulk gap. More importantly, class-II Dirac points exhibit peculiar topological properties. The wavelength area is divided into two regions, each of which can only support interface states for one configuration, type-AB or type-BA connections. Our results show that type-II Dirac points, especially those that are class II, have an underlying impact on the surface impedance and determine the existence of interface states.
Topological Photonic Crystal with Equifrequency Weyl Points

Abstract:Weyl points in three-dimensional photonic crystals behave as monopoles of Berry flux in momentum space. Here, based on general symmetry analysis, we show that a minimal number of four symmetry-related (consequently equifrequency) Weyl points can be realized in time-reversal invariant photonic crystals. We further propose an experimentally-feasible way to modify double-gyroid photonic crystals to realize four equifrequency Weyl points, which is explicitly confirmed by our first-principle photonic band-structure calculations. Remarkably, photonic crystals with equifrequency Weyl points are qualitatively advantageous in applications including angular selectivity, frequency selectivity, invisibility cloaking, and three dimensional imaging.
The Resonance-Induced In-Gap Modes in Photonic Crystals Composed of Metal-Coated Dielectric Spheres

Abstract:Using the vector wave multiple-scattering method we show that a sizable photonic band gap and resonance-induced in-gap modes can be realized simultaneously in crystals composed of metal-coated dielectric spheres. The position and width of the in-gap modes can be controlled by making appropriate choices of the dielectric constant of the inner dielectric sphere and thickness of the metal-coating layer, respectively. Such properties can be very useful in making optical band filters as well as microcavity lasers if they are sustained in the presence of dissipation. The calculated transmission spectra suggest that the resonance-induced in-gap modes decrease in intensity with dissipation and exist only for good metals.
Realization of complex conjugate media using non-PT-symmetric photonic crystals

Abstract:While parity-time (PT)-symmetric systems can exhibit real spectra in the exact PT-symmetry regime, the PT-symmetry is actually not a necessary condition for the real spectra. Here we show that non-PT-symmetric photonic crystals carrying Dirac-like cone dispersions can always exhibit real spectra as long as the average non-Hermiticity strength within the unit cell for the eigenstates is zero. By building a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian model, we find that the real spectra of the non-PT-symmetric system can be explained using the concept of pseudo-Hermiticity. We demonstrate using effective medium theories that in the long-wavelength limit, such non-PT-symmetric photonic crystals behave like the so-called complex conjugate medium (CCM) whose refractive index is real but whose permittivity and permeability are complex numbers. The real refractive index for this effective CCM is guaranteed by the real spectrum of the photonic crystals and the complex permittivity and permeability comes from the non-PT-symmetric loss-gain distributions. We show some interesting phenomena associated with the CCM, such as the lasing effect.

Dispersion Characterization of Dielectric Two-Dimensional Photonic Band Gap

Abstract:Dielectric photonic crystals, characterized by periodic refractive index modulation, give rise to photonic band gaps (PBGs), offering a novel avenue for controlling the propagation of electromagnetic waves. In this study, we aim to investigate the correlation between the ratio of the lattice constant to the rod radius and the PBG. Employing the Finite-Difference Frequency-Domain method, we calculate the dispersions along the boundary of the irreducible Brillouin zone, which are visually presented in the figures. This exploration promises to introduce a completely new degree of freedom for the manipulation of light or electromagnetic wave propagation.

Abstract:We design a one-dimensional photonic crystal containing a defect made of twin prisms and study its transmission properties using the transfer matrix method. The incident waves with different wavelengths can be transmitted out at different positions of the last interface of the structure, i.e., one wavelength corresponds to a single export point. Such a structure can be used as a novel dispersion separator. The resolution of this dispersion separator depends on the structure and indices of the twin prisms.
