Abstract:While parity-time (PT)-symmetric systems can exhibit real spectra in the exact PT-symmetry regime, the PT-symmetry is actually not a necessary condition for the real spectra. Here we show that non-PT-symmetric photonic crystals carrying Dirac-like cone dispersions can always exhibit real spectra as long as the average non-Hermiticity strength within the unit cell for the eigenstates is zero. By building a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian model, we find that the real spectra of the non-PT-symmetric system can be explained using the concept of pseudo-Hermiticity. We demonstrate using effective medium theories that in the long-wavelength limit, such non-PT-symmetric photonic crystals behave like the so-called complex conjugate medium (CCM) whose refractive index is real but whose permittivity and permeability are complex numbers. The real refractive index for this effective CCM is guaranteed by the real spectrum of the photonic crystals and the complex permittivity and permeability comes from the non-PT-symmetric loss-gain distributions. We show some interesting phenomena associated with the CCM, such as the lasing effect.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the conditions for realizing the Complex Conjugate Medium (CCM) in non - PT - symmetric photonic crystals. Specifically, the author explores how to adjust the average non - Hermitian strength of non - Hermitian systems so that non - PT - symmetric photonic crystals exhibit real spectra within certain frequency ranges, and thus realize the complex conjugate medium. This complex conjugate medium has a real refractive index, but its permittivity and permeability can be complex, thereby exhibiting some unique optical phenomena, such as coherent perfect absorption and lasing effects. ### Main contributions of the paper 1. **Theoretical model**: The author constructs a two - band non - Hermitian Hamiltonian model to describe the energy band structure in non - PT - symmetric photonic crystals. Through this model, they show how to adjust the gain - loss distribution within the system so that the average non - Hermitian strength of the system is zero, thereby realizing a real spectrum. 2. **Pseudo - Hermiticity conditions**: The author proves that under certain conditions, non - PT - symmetric photonic crystals can satisfy the pseudo - Hermiticity conditions and thus realize a real spectrum. The key to this condition is that the average non - Hermitian strength of the system is zero. 3. **Experimental verification**: Through numerical simulation and analytical methods, the author verifies their theoretical model and shows that under specific parameters, non - PT - symmetric photonic crystals can indeed realize the behavior of the complex conjugate medium. ### Key concepts - **Non - PT - symmetric systems**: Normally, PT - symmetric systems (i.e., systems that simultaneously satisfy spatial reflection P and time - reversal T symmetries) can exhibit real spectra when PT symmetry is unbroken. However, non - PT - symmetric systems can also realize real spectra in other ways. - **Pseudo - Hermiticity**: A Hamiltonian \(H\) is called a pseudo - Hermitian Hamiltonian if it satisfies \(\eta H\eta^{-1}=H^{\dagger}\), where \(\eta\) is an invertible linear Hermitian operator. Pseudo - Hermiticity is one of the necessary conditions for realizing a real spectrum. - **Complex conjugate medium**: The complex conjugate medium is a special medium whose refractive index is real, but its permittivity and permeability can be complex. This medium can be used to realize some unique optical phenomena, such as coherent perfect absorption and lasing effects. ### Implementation methods 1. **Constructing a non - Hermitian Hamiltonian model**: The author constructs a two - band non - Hermitian Hamiltonian model by considering a two - dimensional photonic crystal containing cylinders of two different materials. 2. **Adjusting the gain - loss ratio**: By adjusting the gain - loss ratio \(\ell_r\), the average non - Hermitian strength of the system is made zero, thereby realizing the pseudo - Hermiticity conditions. 3. **Numerical simulation and analytical analysis**: Through numerical simulation and analytical methods, the validity of the theoretical model is verified, and it is shown that under specific parameters, non - PT - symmetric photonic crystals can indeed realize the behavior of the complex conjugate medium. ### Conclusion This paper successfully shows how to realize the complex conjugate medium in non - PT - symmetric photonic crystals through theoretical modeling and numerical simulation. This research not only expands the understanding of non - Hermitian systems and complex conjugate media, but also provides a theoretical basis for designing new optical devices.
