Abstract:A tetradentate ligand together with its manganese complex has been synthesized and characterized.The complex was screened for the catalytic epoxidation of a broad range of olefins using AcO2H as the oxidant.The efficient epoxidation of a family of olefins has been accomplished by the manganese catalyst that exhibits an uncommon chemoselectivity with low catalyst loading(0.5%),fast conversion(5 min) and high yields(85%-99%).

Abstract:A tetradentate nitrogen ligand containing a benzimidazole ring and an electron-rich pyridine ring was developed, the resulting manganese complex exhibited good activity in the C-H oxidation of simple alkanes. In particular, cyclic aliphatic alkanes were transformed into ketones in very good yields (up to 89 %) by using environmentally benign H2 O2 as the terminal oxidant. This protocol was also applied successfully in benzylic C-H oxidation, giving the corresponding ketones with very good selectivities. In addition, tertiary C-H bond oxidation of complex molecules by the manganese complex showed potential utility for assembling alcohols with good selectivity in late-stage chemical synthesis.

Abstract:A highly efficient strategy for the enantioselective oxidation of methylene C-H of spirocyclic oxindoles and dihydroquinolinones has been established, in which an earth-abundant manganese catalyst and hydrogen peroxide are used. Noteworthy, the manganese catalyst can be applied to the asymmetric hydroxylation of spirocyclic 2,3-dihydroquinolin-4-ones with 94-99% ee.

Abstract:An efficient Mn-catalyzed aerobic oxidative hydroxyazidation of olefins for synthesis of β-azido alcohols has been developed. The aerobic oxidative generation of azido radical employing air as the terminal oxidant is disclosed as the key process for this transformation. The reaction is appreciated by its broad substrate scope, inexpensive Mn-catalyst, high efficiency, easy operation under air, and mild conditions at room temperature. This chemistry provides a novel approach to high value-added β-azido alcohols, which are useful precursors of aziridines, β-amino alcohols, and other important N- and O-containing heterocyclic compounds. This chemistry also provides an unexpected approach to azido substituted cyclic peroxy alcohol esters. A DFT calculation indicates that Mn catalyst plays key dual roles as an efficient catalyst for the generation of azido radical and a stabilizer for peroxyl radical intermediate. Further calculation reasonably explains the proposed mechanism for the control of C-C bond cleavage or for the formation of β-azido alcohols.

Abstract:The direct oxidative N-acylation reaction of primary amides with aryl/alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes was achieved in the presence of azolium salt C3 and an inorganic base using 3,3',5,5'-tetra-tert-butyldipherioquinone as the oxidant, thus providing an efficient approach for the synthesis of three types of imide compounds including N-sulfonylcarboxamides, N-sulfinylcarboxamides, and dicarboxyimides in good yield.

Abstract:The reaction of o-aminoacetophenones and arylboronic acids catalyzed by copper(II) salts in the presence of pyridine under an O2 atmosphere provides a general and efficient one-pot preparation of biologically interesting acridones. This relay reaction comprises an intermolecular Suzuki cross-coupling, intramolecular oxidative C(sp3)-H amination, and C(sp2)-H activation with simultaneous rearrangement of the generated isatin intermediates. This strategy tolerates both electron-donating and -withdrawing functionalities to afford various acridones in good to excellent yields.

Abstract:A copper‐catalysed (diacetoxyiodo)benzene‐promoted aerobic esterification reaction of acetoacetamides was developed for the synthesis of oxamates, which are useful precursors in synthetic organic chemistry. This practical and mild synthetic approach proceeded at 25 °C under open‐air conditions and afforded methyl 2‐oxo‐2‐(phenylamino)acetates in good to excellent yields combined with C−C σ‐bond cleavage and formal oxidative C−H bond functionalization. A mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:A series of different Mn loaded catalysts based on Ba/ZrO2 have been prepared by impregnation methods and characterized by XRD, CO2-TPD, SEM, XPS, and nitrogen physorption. Compared with the Ba-0.5/ZrO2 catalyst, the manganese modified Ba-0.5/ZrO2 has a BaMnO3 phase, a similar surface area, more basicity and smaller particle size. For the synthesis of acrylonitrile from acetonitrile and methanol, the effects of Mn loading, reaction temperature and reaction time on the catalytic properties of BaxMny/ZrO2 have been studied. At the optimum reaction conditions, the conversion of acetonitrile and selectivity of acrylonitrite are 14.7% and 93.8%, respectively.
Oxidation of Aldehydes into Carboxylic Acids by a Mononuclear Manganese(III) Iodosylbenzene Complex through Electrophilic C-H Bond Activation

Abstract:The oxidation of aldehyde is one of the fundamental reactions in the biological system. Various synthetic procedures and catalysts have been developed to convert aldehydes into corresponding carboxylic acids efficiently under ambient conditions. In this work, we report the oxidation of aldehydes by a mononuclear manganese(III) iodosylbenzene complex, [MnIII(TBDAP)(OIPh)(OH)]2+ (1), with kinetic and mechanistic studies in detail. The reaction of 1 with aldehydes resulted in the formation of corresponding carboxylic acids via a pre-equilibrium state. Hammett plot and reaction rates of 1 with 1°-, 2°-, and 3°-aldehydes revealed the electrophilicity of 1 in the aldehyde oxidation. A kinetic isotope effect experiment and reactivity of 1 toward cyclohexanecarboxaldehyde (CCA) analogues indicate that the reaction of 1 with aldehyde occurs through the rate-determining C-H bond activation at the formyl group. The reaction rate of 1 with CCA is correlated to the bond dissociation energy of the formyl group plotting a linear correlation with other aliphatic C-H bonds. Density functional theory calculations found that 1 electrostatically interacts with CCA at the pre-equilibrium state in which the C-H bond activation of the formyl group is performed as the most feasible pathway. Surprisingly, the rate-determining step is characterized as hydride transfer from CCA to 1, affording an (oxo)methylium intermediate. At the fundamental level, it is revealed that the hydride transfer is composed of H atom abstraction followed by a fast electron transfer. Catalytic reactions of aldehydes by 1 are also presented with a broad substrate scope. This novel mechanistic study gives better insights into the metal oxygen chemistry and would be prominently valuable for development of transition metal catalysts.

Abstract:Aromatic azo compounds, which play an important role in pharmaceutical and industrial applications, still face great challenges in synthesis. Herein, we report a molybdenum oxide compound, [N(C4 H9 )4 ]2 [Mo6 O19 ] (1), catalyzed selective oxidation of anilines with hydrogen peroxide as green oxidant. The oxidation of anilines can be realized in a fully selectively fashion to afford various symmetric/asymmetric azobenzene and azoxybenzene compounds, respectively, by changing additive and solvent, avoiding the use of stoichiometric metal oxidants. Preliminary mechanistic investigations suggest the intermediacy of highly active reactive and elusive Mo imido complexes.

Abstract:An simple, efficient method for the construction of an array of α-ketoamides has been described from readily available O-benzoyl hydroxylamines and diazo compounds as starting materials by the combined use of CuI as a catalyst and H2O as oxygen source. The mechanism research reveals that the O-benzoyl hydroxylamines serve a dual role as both amine source and oxidant, thereby obviating the need for additional oxidants in the transformation process. This methodology could afford a wider range of products in good to excellent yields for most substrates, and provides a new idea for synthesis of α-ketoamide.

Abstract:The manganese(III) acetate-mediated free radical cyclization of diarylmethylenecyclopropa[b] naphthalenes with nucleophiles such as carboxylic acid and sulfonic acid provides an efficient method for the synthesis of 1,2-benzanthracenes in moderate to good yields under mild conditions. In addition, after several steps of simple and routine operations, the obtained 1,2-benzanthracenes bearing an acetoxy group could be easily converted to structurally more sophisticated 1,2-benzanthracene derivatives, which are not easily accessible yet potentially useful candidates for materials science.

Abstract:AbstractA novel copper‐catalyzed, multiple oxidative dehydrogenative functionalization of arylacetaldehydes leading to 2‐oxo‐acetamidine compounds has been developed. This transformation is highly efficient with dissociation of six hydrogens including two sp3 CH and one sp2 CH bond activations. This method not only provides an efficient approach to 2‐oxo‐acetamidine compounds, but also offers a valuable mechanistic insight into this novel copper catalysis.

Abstract:Carboazidation of alkenes and alkynes holds the promise to construct valuable molecules directly from chemical feedstock therefore is significantly important. Although a few examples have been developed, there are still some unsolved problems and lack of universal methods for carboazidation of both alkenes and alkynes. Here we describe an iron-catalyzed rapid carboazidation of alkenes and alkynes, enabled by the oxidative radical relay precursor t -butyl perbenzoate. This strategy enjoys success with a broad scope of alkenes under mild conditions, and it can also work with aryl alkynes which are challenging substrates for carboazidation. A large number of diverse structures, including many kinds of amino acid precursors, fluoroalkylated vinyl azides, other specific organoazides, and 2 H -azirines can be easily produced.

Abstract:Efficient copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidative C-H and C-C functionalization of 1-[2-(arylamino)aryl]ethanones leading to acridones has been developed. The procedure involves cleavage of aromatic C-H and acetyl C-C bonds with intramolecular formation of a diarylketone bond. The protocol uses inexpensive Cu(O2CCF3)2 as catalyst, pyridine as additive, and economical and environmentally friendly oxygen as the oxidant, and the corresponding acridones with various functional groups were obtained in moderate to good yields.
