Abstract:Solvent freezing is an important method to produce polymer foams with highly tunable pore structure. However, foams prepared from aqueous solution precursors commonly suffer from poor water resistance, whereas those organo-phase systems are not environmental-friendly. Here we present that using an emulsion lyophilization method can overcome such a contradiction and synthesize multi-functional polymer foams. Commercially available polyacrylate-based emulsions with various targeted glass transition temperatures (Tgs) were applied. Adipodihydrazide molecules contained in the water phase of the emulsions reacted with the acetyl groups on the polymers during the freeze-drying, forming elastic networks to maintain the pore structure. The foams can tolerant a 650% elongation without failure and are notch insensitive. The porosity of the foams can be tuned from approximately 45% to 90% via lyophilization of diluted emulsions. The facile blending of emulsions with different targeted Tg enabled foams with multi-shape memory capability. Moreover, the foams showed an excellent mechanical damping property, and the slow recovery nature enabled a clip application of clamping extremely weak objects.

Abstract:Getting back into shape Shape memory polymers have been known for at least half a century. When deformed at a temperature defined by a specific phase transition, these materials retain the new shape on cooling, but regain their original shape on reheating. Currently known shape memory polymers are capable of memorizing one or two temporary shapes, and the starting shape. Now Tao Xie, working at the General Motors Research and Development Center in Warren, Michigan, reports a material that has at least a quadruple shape memory effect — that's three 'new' shapes plus the original. The material is perfluorosulphonic acid (PFSA or Nafion), a commercial ionomer that has been extensively studied due to its application as a fuel-cell proton exchange membrane. Its broad reversible phase transition means that the shape memory effect is highly tunable, without the need for chemical alteration.

Abstract:Device applications of shape memory polymers demand diverse shape changing geometries, which are currently limited to non-omnidirectional movement. This restriction originates from traditional thermomechanical programming methods such as uniaxial, biaxial stretching, bending, or compression. A solvent-modulated programming method is reported to achieve an omnidirectional shape memory behavior. The method utilizes freeze drying of hydrogels of polyethylene glycol networks with a melting transition temperature around 50 °C in their dry state. Such a process creates temporarily fixed macroporosity, which collapses upon heating, leading to significant omnidirectional shrinkage. These shrunken materials can swell in water to form hydrogels again and the omnidirectional programming and recovery can be repeated. The fixity ratio (R f ) and recovery ratio (R r ) can be maintained at 90% and 98% respectively upon shape memory multicycling. The maximum linear recoverable strain, as limited by the maximum swelling, is ≈90%. Amongst various application potentials, one can envision the fabrication of multiphase composites by taking advantages of the omnidirectional shrinkage from a porous polymer to a denser structure.

Each deformed region can be independently actuated at a specific frequency based on the filler type in the region. Abstract:Owing to the dynamic nature and the rich library of supramolecular interactions, supramolecular shape memory polymers have shown unique benefits beyond traditional thermoset shape memory polymers including multi-stimuli response, self-healing, recyclability, and solid-state plasticity. Thanks to extensive research over the last two decades, the above characteristics have become well-established. Despite that, new material design opportunities beyond those continue to emerge in the recent five years. In particular, supramolecular shape memory polymer has been reported to possess unusually high output energy density via strain-induced formation of ordered supramolecular structures, which are beneficial for use as artificial muscles. In addition, the hydrophobic domain in a hydrogel has been demonstrated to be effective in fixing the anisotropy of the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) chains, giving rise to two-way reversible shape memory behavior in hydrogels. Intriguingly, the change in glassy transition temperature due to photo-isomerization of azobenzene moieties leads to athermal shape memory polymers for which no heating/cooling is required for the entire shape memory cycle. Rational design of a shape memory network with self-complementary hydrogen bonding interactions endows the material with superior toughness and multi-recyclability. Collectively, these recent progresses have expanded the scope of shape memory polymers, which are summarized in the first half of this article. The above developments typically take advantage of the on-off switch offered by supramolecular interactions, but their dynamic reorganization process has been by and large neglected. Several reports in the last three years have shown that this latter characteristic is uniquely useful in designing autonomous shape memory polymers for which no external stimulation is needed to trigger the shape recovery. These supramolecular autonomous shape memory polymers are discussed in the second half of this article. This class of materials utilize the time- and temperature-dependent exchange kinetics of supramolecular interactions to manipulate the entropic energy stored via spatio-temporal programming, as a way to control the shape-shifting. This autonomous shape-shifting mode differs drastically from traditional stimuli-responsive shape memory polymers and its trigger-free nature can open up new device applications in which access to external stimulation is difficult. We believe that the principle of spatio-temporal programming via supramolecular interactions can be potentially expanded to other molecular mechanisms, which will provide a new perspective for smart material design in the future. Abstract:Multishape memory copolymers were prepared through copolymerization of two norbornene derivatives: one based on cholic acid and the other on triethylene glycol monomethyl ether. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the copolymers can be tuned over a temperature range from −58 to 176 °C. Most of these copolymers displayed a very broad Tg over a 20 °C range which can allow a multishape memory effect. The shape memory properties of the copolymer incorporating an equal molar amount of both monomers have been studied in detail. The multishape memory effect was investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis using a thermomechanical programming process, in which multiple steps created two, three, and four temporary shapes. The polymer displayed good shape fixing and recovery in different thermal processing stages over the broad glass transition range. This series of copolymers with broad and tunable Tg’s may be useful as functional materials with multishape memory effect.

Abstract:The use of shape memory polymers is demonstrated for deformable, programmable, and shape-memorizing micro-optical devices. A semi-crystalline shape memory elastomer, crosslinked poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate), is used to prepare various micro-optic components, ranging from microlens and microprism arrays to diffraction gratings and holograms. The precise replication of surface features at the micro- and nanoscale and the formation of crosslinked shape memory polymer networks can be achieved in a single step via compression molding. Further deformation via hot pressing or stretching of micro-optics formed in this manner allows manipulation of the microscopic surface features, and thus the corresponding optical properties. Due to the shape memory effect, the original surface structures and the optical properties can be recovered and the devices be reprogrammed, with excellent reversibility in the optical properties. Furthermore, arrays of transparent resistive microheaters can be integrated with deformed micro-optical devices to selectively trigger the recovery of surface features in a spatially programmable manner, thereby providing additional capabilities in user-defi nable optics.

Abstract:Ice templating that uses water as a green porogen has emerged as an eco-friendly and promising approach to fabricating porous materials. However, foams prepared from aqueous solutions are typically water-intolerant owing to their hydrophilic nature. Hydrophobic foams can also be prepared through the freezing of dispersions, but extra organic solvents are often required, making it environmentally unfriendly. Herein, we develop photo-cross-linking of ice templated emulsions to produce multifunctional porous materials based on emulsifier-free photosensitive emulsions. The whole porogenation process is relatively fast (within several minutes) without freeze-drying, facilitating the roll-to-roll continuous production of porous polymers. The material versatility can be expanded with different formulations, including soft foams with high stretchability, rigid materials providing tunable shape memory properties, and hierarchical porous ceramics enabling thermal insulation. This approach is environmentally friendly and economically attractive, and the principle can be extended to diverse precursors for the production of functionalized porous materials.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive materials with sophisticated yet controllable shape-changing behaviors are highly desirable for real-world device applications. Among various shape-changing materials, the elastic nature of shape memory polymers allows fixation of temporary shapes that can recover on demand, whereas polymers with exchangeable bonds can undergo permanent shape change via plasticity. We integrate the elasticity and plasticity into a single polymer network. Rational molecular design allows these two opposite behaviors to be realized at different temperature ranges without any overlap. By exploring the cumulative nature of the plasticity, we demonstrate easy manipulation of highly complex shapes that is otherwise extremely challenging. The dynamic shape-changing behavior paves a new way for fabricating geometrically complex multifunctional devices.

Abstract:The unique capability of topological rearrangement for dynamic covalent polymer networks has enabled various unusual properties (self-healing, solid-state plasticity, and reprocessability) that are not found in conventional thermosets. Achieving these properties in one network in a synergetic fashion can open up new opportunities for shape memory polymer. To accomplish such a goal, the freedom to tune topological rearrangement kinetics is critical. This is, however, challenging to achieve. In this work, two sets of dynamic bonds (urethane and hindered urea) are incorporated into a hybrid network for synthesizing shape memory poly(urea-urethane). By changing the bond ratio, networks with highly tunable topological rearrangement kinetics are obtained. Combining self-healing, solid-state plasticity, and reprocessability in one such shape memory network leads to unusual versatility in its shape-shifting performance.

Abstract:Shape-memory polymers (SMP) have been widely applied in biomedical areas as vascular stents, occlusion devices, fracture fixators, etc. The shape recovery region is the key factor for the performance of the SMP-based devices. In this paper, we describe a feasible method to tune the shape-recovery region of amorphous polymers. A lightly crosslinked acrylate polymer is synthesized and treated by isopropyl alcohol for a different amount of time. The dynamic mechanical analysis shows that the glass transition region is lowered by 25-75 degrees C through varying the immersion time in isopropyl alcohol. The dry and wet polymers all show excellent thermally-induced shape-memory behaviors, while the shape-recovery region can be adjusted as much as 70 degrees C. The method is universal, which can be applied to other polymer-solvent systems to achieve tunable shape-memory behaviors. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Thermoset polymers are known for their superior thermomechanical properties, but the chemical crosslinking typically leads to intractability. This is reflected in the great differences between thermoset and thermoplastic shape-memory polymers; the former exhibit a robust shape memory but are not capable of redefining the permanent shape. Contrary to current knowledge, we reveal here that a classical thermoset shape-memory polyurethane is readily capable of permanent reshaping (plasticity) after a topological network rearrangement that is induced by transcarbamoylation. By employing the Jianzhi technique (also known as kirigami), unexpected shape-shifting versatility was observed for this otherwise classical material. As the essential carbamate moiety in polyurethanes is one of the most common polymer building units, we anticipate that our finding will have significant benefits beyond shape shifting.

Abstract:A recently emerged reversible shape memory effect greatly extends the capability of shape memory polymers and their practical potential. Physical confinement and chemical fixation are individually known to be effective in introducing network anisotropy essential for reversible shape memory. Herein, we demonstrate that synergetic combination of these two mechanisms effectively diversifies the shape-shifting behavior. Specifically, we introduce a transesterification catalyst into a network containing two crystalline phases: poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(ω-pentadecalactone) (PPDL). The reversible shape memory behavior of the resulting system can be programmed via the physical confinement by the PPDL phase and the chemical plasticity by the dynamic ester exchange. We illustrate that the two programming mechanisms can operate in a noninterfering way that allows achieving a synergetic benefit, notably realizing a zero-set reversible shape memory behavior. Our study points to a direction in diversifying the behaviors of reversible shape memory polymers and expands the scope for potential engineering devices.
Shape Memory Polymers with Regionally Defined Glass Transition Temperature via Digital Photocuring

Abstract:Thermal transition temperatures (e.g. glass transition temperatures) play an important role in various applications of shape memory polymers that can recover from temporary shapes to original (permanent) shapes upon heating. This study reports a shape memory epoxy with unsaturated double bonds, enabling a secondary photocuring process. Dual-functional epoxy monomer, E44, and monofunctional epoxy monomer, glycidyl methacrylate, are first thermally cured via a polyether amine crosslinker. Properties of the cured epoxy can be finely tuned by controlling the feed compositions. The increase of feed ratio of glycidyl methacrylate will lead to lower glass transition temperature and elastic modulus, whereas larger strain at break. In the secondary photocuring process, the unsaturated bonds provided by glycidyl methacrylate are polymerized after light exposure, forming additional crosslinking points. As a result, the glass transition temperature of the material increases. Herein, digital photo-masking technique is applied for the photocuring process via a commercial projector. The regional exposure time of the material can be conducted, and thus, the local glass transition temperature can be controlled in a range of approximately 40 - 70 degrees C. Storage modulus at the rubbery state of the material increases from approximately 0.5 MPa to 8 MPa after photo exposure for 240 s, implying that there is a remarkable increase of the crosslinking density via the secondary photocuring. Both the materials before and after the secondary photocuring provide ideal shape memory performance. The shape fixity ratios and shape recovery ratios retain nearly 100% during six shape memory cycles, indicating good thermo-mechanical stability of the material. The material with regional controllable glass transition temperature enables a programmable multi-shape recovery process. Complex original shapes can be fabricated if the secondary photocuring is conducted towards a thermally cured epoxy. In addition, the material can be potentially applied as a novel substrate for stretchable electronics due to its strain isolation functionality.
Ultra Low Density and Highly Crosslinked Biocompatible Shape Memory Polyurethane Foams

Abstract:We report the development of highly chemically crosslinked, ultra low density (~0.015 g/cc) polyurethane shape memory foams synthesized from symmetrical, low molecular weight and branched hydroxyl monomers. Sharp single glass transitions (Tg) customizable in the functional range of 45-70 °C were achieved. Thermomechanical testing confirmed shape memory behavior with 97-98% shape recovery over repeated cycles, a glassy storage modulus of 200-300 kPa and recovery stresses of 5-15 kPa. Shape holding tests under constrained storage above the Tg showed stable shape memory. A high volume expansion of up to 70 times was seen on actuation of these foams from a fully compressed state. Low in-vitro cell activation induced by the foam compared to controls demonstrates low acute bio-reactivity. We believe these porous polymeric scaffolds constitute an important class of novel smart biomaterials with multiple potential applications.

Abstract:A new strategy to prepare multi-shape memory polymers, which utilizes the confined co-crystallization characteristics of small molecules to construct tunable switch, has been proposed. On the basis of this strategy, a novel shape memory polymer comprising paraffin molecules with different chain lengths and styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene (SEBS) was prepared. As paraffin molecules tend to form continuous series of solid solution over a wide range of chain lengths, deemed as co-crystallization, a broad thermal transition may be obtained through mixing paraffin molecules with distinct melting points, and for our shape memory composites, a broad transition is essential for tunable abilities. Thermal properties of the SEBS–paraffin composites have been characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, suggesting excellent confined co-crystallization characteristics, and such characteristics have been further verified by wide angle X-ray diffraction and successive self-nucleation and annealing thermal fractionation analysis. The results of a series of shape memory testing demonstrate that the composites possess versatile shape memory properties, such as temperature memory and multi-shape memory effect. Compared with the reported methods to prepare multi-shape memory polymers, this method not only simplifies the fabrication procedure from raw materials to processing, paving the way for large-scale fabrication, but also offers a controllable approach for adjusting the mechanical properties as well as tailoring the transition temperature.

Abstract:In this paper, a thermo-responsive shape memory effect in a polyvinyl chloride thermoset foam is characterized. Excellent shape recovery performance is observed in foam samples programmed both at room temperature and above their transition temperature. The conversion of porous structures in the foam from closed-cell to open-cell after a shape memory effect cycle is revealed via a series of specially designed oil-dripping experiments and optical images of the micro pores. Programming the strain higher than 20% results in an apparent increase in open-cell level, whereas programming temperatures have almost no influence.

Abstract:A facile blending strategy to fabricate multishape memory polymers (SMPs) with only one sort of phase transition material has been reported. In this work, olefin block copolymer (OBC) and styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene (SEBS), which are both physically crosslinked, are blended with crystalline paraffin together. Due to the different interactions between polymer matrices and paraffin, the paraffin penetrated in OBC and SEBS exhibit separated melting transitions. It is quite interesting that merely paraffin distributed in OBC also shows two distinct melting transitions with enough OBC content in composites. Therefore, excellent quadruple shape memory effect can be achieved with a maximum of three melting transitions. Furthermore, through adjusting the polymer species and content, the mechanical and rheological properties can be conveniently tuned to a great extent. Compared with the reported strategies, this simple and controllable method sheds light on rapid design of multi-SMPs using inexpensive raw materials, which greatly paves the way for multi-SMPs from laboratory to factory.

Abstract:Multi-shape memory polymers were prepared by the macroscale spatio-assembly of building blocks in this work. The building blocks were methyl acrylate-co-styrene (MA-co-St) copolymers, which have the St-block-(St-random-MA)-block-St tri-block chain sequence. This design ensures that their transition temperatures can be adjusted over a wide range by varying the composition of the middle block. The two St blocks at the chain ends can generate a crosslink network in the final device to achieve strong bonding force between building blocks and the shape memory capacity. Due to their thermoplastic properties, 3D printing was employed for the spatio-assembly to build devices. This method is capable of introducing many transition phases into one device and preparing complicated shapes via 3D printing. The device can perform a complex action via a series of shape changes. Besides, this method can avoid the difficult programing of a series of temporary shapes. The control of intermediate temporary shapes was realized via programing the shapes and locations of building blocks in the final device.

Abstract:Multi-shape memory polymers were prepared by blending a series of styrene (St)-block-(styrenerandom- meth acrylate (MA))-block-styrene triblock copolymer nano-latexes. These latexes synthesized using a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization method have a core-shell structure. The cores are formed by the middle poly(St-random-MA) blocks. They act as transition phases with variable transition temperatures via adjusting the St/MA ratio. When the latexes are blended with an identical PSt shell but different poly(St-random-MA) cores, the shells play a role in preventing the aggregation of these poly(St-random-MA) cores forming a crosslinked network after hot-press treatment. Therefore a polymer with well-distributed multiple nanophases is achieved, which shows a quadruple-shape memory behavior. Furthermore, the shape memory and recovery performance at a certain temperature can be improved on purpose by increasing the mass ratio of the corresponding transition phases, which can be realized via simply varying the blending ratio of different latexes. An optimized multi-shape memory polymer with the shape memory and recovery ratio higher than 80% at all the transition temperatures is achieved.
