Abstract:Transition-metal oxides (TMOs) are considered as promising anode materials for lithium ion batteries. However, the poor structural stability and relatively low electronic conductivity greatly limit their application in flexible electronic devices. Herein, a 3D hierarchical high performance MnO-based flexible electrode is fabricated through vacuum-assisted layer-by-layer assembly of 1D polydopamine coated MnO2 nanowires (MnO2@PDA NWs) and 2D graphene oxide nanosheets (GO NSs), followed by a thermal reduction process. The resulting composite (MnO@C-rGO) demonstrates excellent flexibility, structure stability and manifests outstanding lithium storage performance in terms of high reversible capacity (920 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1), excellent rate capability (686 mAh g−1 at 2 A g−1 and 396 mAh g−1 at 10 A g−1) and impressive cycling stability (719 mAh g−1 at 2 A g−1 without fading after 800 cycles), exceeding most of recently reported MnO-based anodes. It is proved that the freestanding flexible MnO@C-rGO anode can be successfully applied in flexible full cell, which achieves superior flexibility and maintains good electrochemical performance during mechanical deformations.

Abstract:Self-supported Li4Ti5O12-C nanotube arrays with high conductivity architectures are designed and fabricated for application in Li-ion batteries. The Li4Ti5O12 nanotube arrays grow directly on stainless steel foil by a facile template-based solution route, further enhancing electronic conductivity by uniform carbon-coating on the inner and outer surfaces of Li4Ti5O12 nanotubes. Owing to the shortened Li+ diffusion distance, high contact surface area, sufficient conductivity, and very good structure stability of the nanotube arrays, the self-supported Li4Ti5O12-C nanotube arrays exhibit remarkable rate capability (a reversible capability of 135 mA h g(-1), 105 mA h g(-1), and 80 mA h g(-1) at 30C, 60C, and 100C, respectively) and cycling performance (approximate 7% capacity loss after 500 cycles at 10C with a capacity retention of 144 mA h g(-1)).

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of uniform multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)@Si nanocomposites via the magnesiothermic reduction of pre-synthesized MWCNT@SiO2 nanocables. At first, the acid vapor steaming is used to treat the surface, which can facilitate the uniform deposition of SiO2 layer via the TEOS hydrolysis. Then, the uniform MWCNT@Si nanocomposites are obtained on the basis of MWCNT@SiO2 nanocables via a simple magnesiothermic reduction. When used as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the as-synthesized MWCNT@Si nanocomposites show high reversible capacity and good cycling performance, which is better than bulk Si and bare MWCNTs. It is believed that the good electrochemical performance can be attributed to the novel porous nanostructure and the introduction of MWCNTs that can buffer the volume change, maintain the electrical conductive network, and enhance the electronic conductivity and lithium-ion transport. Abstract:Lithium transition metal oxides (LTMOs) are important cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Constructing the robust hybrid of LTMO-flexible substrate is of great significance for developing advanced flexible LIBs. However, currently reported flat noble metal-based flexible cathodes are cost-expensive and show quite low areal capacities. Developing low-cost and nanostructured flexible substrates for LTMO cathodes is highly desirable but still rarely reported. Particularly challenging is preventing flexible substrate corrosion and mitigating/eliminating the severe ion migration at interface during necessary high-temperature annealing process. Herein, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with truncated conical graphene layers are carefully chosen as flexible substrates for the growth of ultrasmall LiMn2O4 nanocrystals. The highly graphitic structure enables good high-temperature oxidation resistance. The plenty of exposed graphitic edge planes afford unexpected strong anchoring of LiMn2O4, evidenced by both experimental results and theoretical calculations. Moreover, an amorphous carbon layer is simultaneously introduced and coated on LiMn2O4 nanocrystals, which provides another strong outer anchoring like a 'cargo net'. Such dual-carbon-anchoring strategy help produce a 1D LiMn2O4-nanocarbon hybrid with robust interface. As LIB cathode, it owns fast electron conduction, smooth Li+ transportation, good electrochemical stability and especially superior mechanical flexibility, thus enabling a high areal mass loading of 17.7 mg cm(-2). The corresponding fabricated flexible LiMn2O4/CNF@C//CNF full cell exhibits a high areal capacity of 2.01 mAh cm(-2) as well as good rate capability and cycling stability.

Abstract:Nano-structure design and carbonous coupling are the most popular strategies to tackle the shortcomings of MnO-based anode materials. Herein, a nano-hybrid MnO anode is constructed with a self-supported carbon nanotube (CNT) framework interlacing MnO nanoparticles, denoted as The CNT can spontaneously agglomerate and form a self-supported macro-porous sphere with interconnected CNT framework and abundant inner channels, which is beneficial for e − transport, Li + conduction, and kinetics propulsion. The macro-porous structure delivers abundant interior volume to limit the outer expansion of the anode, which effectively improves the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) stability, particle integrity, and cycling stability. Excellent cycling stability of over 750 cycling life and over 99% Coulombic efficiency can be achieved by the anode, which is demonstrated to be closely related to the multi-functionalities of the hybrid structure. Therefore, our work provides an effective design idea and mechanism investigation for the high-capacity manganese oxide-based anodes.

Abstract:Controllable construction of advanced Mn-based cathodes is of great importance for the development of flexible rechargeable Zn-MnO2 batteries. Herein we report an effective flexible composite strategy to construct integrated arrays cathodes by rationally anchoring active MnO2 on novel N-doped porous carbon nanosheets (N-CNSs) arrays grown on carbon cloth. Typically, hydrothermal-synthesized MnO2 nanoflakes are strongly anchored on the conductive N-CNSs skeleton forming flexible N-CNSs@MnO2 core/shell arrays. Interestingly, active Zn anode is also compatible with N-CNSs skeleton forming flexible integrated anode. Positive effects are demonstrated in the above N-CNSs@MnO2 core/shell arrays including good flexibility, high electrical conductivity, large porosity & specific surface area, and strong mechanical stability. Accordingly, the Zn ion storage kinetics is optimized in the obtained N-CNSs@MnO2 cathodes, which can deliver a high capacity of 303.7 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 and superior long-term lifespan (91.6% retention after 1800 cycles at 2 A g−1) in aqueous electrolyte. More importantly, the as-assembled flexible quasi-solid-state N-CNSs@MnO2//N-CNSs@Zn battery can exhibit a high energy density of 150.6 Wh kg−1 with a power density of 7.9 kW kg−1. Our work shows a novel carbon-based flexible design for construction of high-performance Zn-MnO2 devices.

Abstract:In this report, Co3O4/multiple-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) hybrid materials were synthesized via strong ultrasonication-assisted shaking and magnetic stirring processes. The prepared samples were well characterized by utilizing powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy techniques. Results indicated that the resulting Co3O4 nanoparticles were highly dispersed in the MWCNT network backbone and further form Co3O4/MWCNT hybrid materials. The obtained Co3O4/MWCNT hybrids can be employed as anode electrode in Lithium-ion batteries and deliver as high as discharge capacity of 1250 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 0.2 C, additionally, 81% of the discharge capacity for sample 2 with 20 wt.% MWCNT loading could be retained after 70 cycles, which could be associated with the specific hybrid structure of the electrode as well as the addition of MWCNT. Most importantly, the present synthetic approach is facile, controllable, and scalable, which allowing it more easily adapted to prepare other hybrid materials with specific architectures. Abstract:Transition metal oxides are regarded as promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries because of their high theoretical capacities compared with commercial graphite. Unfortunately, the implementation of such novel anodes is hampered by their large volume changes during the Li+ insertion and extraction process and their low electric conductivities. Herein, we report a specifically designed anode architecture to overcome such problems, that is, mesoporous peapod-like Co3O4@ carbon nanotube arrays, which are constructed through a controllable nanocasting process. Co3O4 nanoparticles are confined exclusively in the intratubular pores of the nanotube arrays. The pores between the nanotubes are open, and thus render the Co3O4 nanoparticles accessible for effective electrolyte diffusion. Moreover, the carbon nanotubes act as a conductive network. As a result, the peapod-like Co3O4@carbon nanotube electrode shows a high specific capacity, excellent rate capacity, and very good cycling performance.
Membranes of MnO Beading in Carbon Nanofibers as Flexible Anodes for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Freestanding yet flexible membranes of MnO/carbon nanofibers are successfully fabricated through incorporating MnO 2 nanowires into polymer solution by a facile electrospinning technique. During the stabilization and carbonization processes of the as-spun membranes, MnO 2 nanowires are transformed to MnO nanoparticles coincided with a conversion of the polymer from an amorphous state to a graphitic structure of carbon nanofibers. The hybrids consist of isolated MnO nanoparticles beading in the porous carbon and demonstrate superior performance when being used as a binder-free anode for lithium-ion batteries. With an optimized amount of MnO (34.6 wt%), the anode exhibits a reversible capacity of as high as 987.3 mAh g −1 after 150 discharge/charge cycles at 0.1 A g −1 , a good rate capability (406.1 mAh g −1 at 3 A g −1 ) and an excellent cycling performance (655 mAh g −1 over 280 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 ). Furthermore, the hybrid anode maintains a good electrochemical performance at bending state as a flexible electrode.
Electrospun MnCo 2 O 4 Nanotubes as High-Performance Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Transition metal oxides with spinel AB2O4 phases are deemed as potential anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), attributing to high specific capacities, low cost, and environmental friendliness, but the pulverization problem induced by the volume changes upon lithiation/delithiation greatly restricts their practical applications. To overcome this problem by nanostructure engineering, we herein successfully design and fabricate one-dimensional (1D) nanotubes consisted of interconnected MnCo2O4 nanoparticles via the convenient electrospinning process and the following heating method. As an anode for LIBs, the as-prepared 1D MnCo2O4 nanotubes demonstrate superior lithium storage properties, showing a high specific capacity (701.4 mA h g–1 at 500 mA g–1 even after going through 320 cycles) and a high-rate performance (400.4 mA h g–1 at 1 A g–1). Abstract:Lithium metal anode is deemed as a potential candidate for high energy density batteries, which has attracted increasing attention. Unfortunately, Li metal anode suffers from issues such as dendrite grown and volume expansion during cycling, which hinders its commercialization. Herein, we designed a porous and flexible self-supporting film comprising of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) modified with a highly-lithiophilic heterostructure (Mn 3 O 4 /Z) as the host material for Li metal anodes. The p- n -type heterojunction constructed by Mn 3 O 4 and ZnO generates a built-in electric field that facilitates electron transfer and Li + migration. Additionally, the lithiophilic Mn 3 O 4 /ZnO particles serve as the pre-implanted nucleation sites, dramatically reducing the lithium nucleation barrier due to their strong binding energy with lithium atoms. Moreover, the interwoven SWCNT conductive network effectively lowers the local current density and alleviates the tremendous volume expansion during cycling. Thanks to the aforementioned synergy, the symmetric cell composed of Mn 3 O 4 / can stably maintain a low potential for more than 2500 h at 1 mA cm −2 and 1 mAh cm −2 . Furthermore, the Li-S full battery composed of Mn 3 O 4 / also shows excellent cycle stability. These results demonstrate that Mn 3 O 4 / has great potential as a dendrite-free Li metal host material.

Abstract:A uniform Fe(3)O(4) sheath is magnetron sputtered onto aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) scaffolds that are directly drawn from CNT arrays. The Fe(3)O(4)-CNT composite electrode, with the size of Fe(3)O(4) confined to 5-7 nm, exhibits a high reversible capacity over 800 mAh g(-1) based on the total electrode mass, remarkable capacity retention, as well as high rate capability. The excellent performance is attributable to the superior electrical conductivity of CNTs, the uniform loading of Fe(3)O(4) sheath, and the structural retention of the composite anode on cycling. As Fe(3)O(4) is inexpensive and environmentally friendly, and the synthesis of Fe(3)O(4)-CNT is free of chemical wastes, this composite anode material holds considerable promise for high-performance lithium ion batteries.
MnO2 Nanoflakes Anchored on Carbon Nanotubes As Self-Standing Anode for Sodium Ion Batteries

Abstract:In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are grown in situ on the surface of carbon cloth (CC) using a pyrolysis method. Subsequently, a redox reaction between CNTs and KMnO 4 allow for the successful loading of manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) nanoflakes onto the CNTs, resulting in the MnO 2 /CNTs/CC composite. This composite serves as a self-supporting anode material without the need for additional conductive agents or binders. The incorporation of CNTs plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall electrical conductivity of the electrode material. Furthermore, the MnO 2 nanoflakes exhibit a substantial specific surface area, resulting in increases contact between the electrode and the electrolyte. A notable feature of this composite is the strong interaction between the CNTs and MnO 2 nanoflakes. This interaction not only effectively mitigates the detachment of MnO 2 nanoflakes during cycling but also facilitates efficient electron transport. The MnO 2 /CNTs/CC composite, when employ as anode material for sodium ion batteries, demonstrate commendable cycling stability, delivering a capacity of 317 mA h g -1 after 120 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A g -1 . Moreover, it exhibit favorable rate performance, achieving a capacity of 161 mA h g -1 at a current density of 2 A g -1 .
High Rate Hybrid MnO2@CNT Fabric Anode for Li-Ion Batteries: Properties and Lithium Storage Mechanism by In-Situ Synchrotron X-Ray Scattering

Abstract:High-performance anodes for rechargeable Li-ion battery are produced by nanostructuring of the transition metal oxides on a conductive support. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid material of MnO2 directly grown onto fabrics of carbon nanotube fibres, which exhibits notable specific capacity over 1100 and 500 mAh/g at a discharge current density of 25 mA/g and 5 A/g, respectively, with coulombic efficiency of 97.5 %. Combined with 97 % capacity retention after 1500 cycles at a current density of 5 A/g, both capacity and stability are significantly above literature data. Detailed investigations involving electrochemical and in situ synchrotron X-ray scattering study reveal that during galvanostatic cycling, MnO2 undergoes an irreversible phase transition to LiMnO2, which stores lithium through an intercalation process, followed by conversion mechanism and pseudocapacitive processes. This mechanism is further confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The fraction of pseudocapacitive charge storage ranges from 27% to 83%, for current densities from 25 mA/g to 5 A/g. Firm attachment of the active material to the built-in current collector makes the electrodes flexible and mechanically robust, and ensures that the low charge transfer resistance and the high electrode surface area remain after irreversible phase transition of the active material and extensive cycling.

Abstract:Lithium metal has been considered as the most promising anode electrode for substantially improving the energy density of next-generation energy storage devices. However, uncontrollable lithium dendrite growth, an unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI), and infinite volume variation severely shortens its service lifespan and causes safety hazards, thus hindering the practical application of lithium metal electrodes. Here, carbon fiber film (CFF) modified by lithiophilic Co3O4 nanowires (denoted as Co3O4 Nws) was proposed as a matrix for prestoring lithium metal through a thermal infusion method. The homogeneous needle-like Co3O4 nanowires can effectively promote molten lithium to infiltrate into the CFF skeleton. The post-formed Co-Li2O nanowires produced by the reaction of Co3O4 Nws and molten lithium can homogeneously distribute lithium ions flux and efficaciously increase the adsorption energy with lithium ions proved by density functional theory (DFT) calculation, boosting a uniform lithium deposition without dendrite growth. Therefore, the obtained composite anode (denoted as CFF/Co-Li2O@Li) exhibits superior electrochemical performance with high stripping/plating capacities of 3 mAh cm(-2) and 5 mAh cm(-2) over long-term cycles in symmetrical batteries. Moreover, in comparison with bare lithium anode, superior Coulombic efficiencies coupled with copper collector and full battery behaviors paired with LiFePO4 cathode are achieved when CFF/Co-Li2O@Li composite anode was employed.
Chemical Vapor Deposition-Assisted Fabrication of Self-Assembled Co/MnO@C Composite Nanofibers As Advanced Anode Materials for High-Capacity Li-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Constructing the nanostructure of transition metal oxides for high energy density lithium-ion batteries has been widely studied recently. Prompted by the idea that the transition metal can serve as a catalyzer influence on the reversibility of solid-electrolyte interphase films, Co/MnO@C composite nanofibers were designed by electrospinning and chemical vapor deposition methods. The Co/MnO@C electrode showed superior electrochemical performance with a large capacity increase for the first 400 cycles and a high rate performance of 1345 mA h g-1 at 1000 mA g-1. There was no obvious decay of capacity over the whole 1000 cycles, demonstrating the excellent cycling stability of the samples. The new design and synthesis of the anodic materials may offer a prototype for high-performance and strong-stability batteries.
Porous Α-Fe 2 O 3 Nanorods Supported on Carbon Nanotubes-Graphene Foam As Superior Anode for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:A novel flexible and lightweight Fe2O3-based lithium-ion battery anode has been developed by growing porous α-Fe2O3 nanorods onto carbon nanotubes–graphene foam (CNT–GF). The CNT–GF 3D network provides a highly conductive, high surface areas and lightweight scaffold for the active Fe2O3 nanorods. Such unique electrodes for lithium-ion battery exhibit an 80% initial columbic efficiency, high-rate capabilities, and >1000mAh/g capacities at 200mA/g up to 300 cycles without obvious fading. These properties can be attributed to the fast electrochemical reaction kinetics and electron transport rendered by the conductive 3D network. Our structural design protocol can be extended to many other nanostructured metal oxides or sulfides, and thus provides a new strategy for construction of high-performance electrodes for energy storage.

Abstract:The ingenious design of a freestanding flexible electrode brings the possibility for power sources in emerging wearable electronic devices. Here, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) wraps carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and rGO tightly surrounded by MnO2 nanosheets, forming a 3D multilevel porous conductive structure via vacuum freeze-drying. The sandwich-like architecture possesses multiple functions as a flexible anode for lithium-ion batteries. Micrometer-sized pores among the continuously waved rGO layers could extraordinarily improve ion diffusion. Nano-sized pores among the MnO2 nanosheets and CNT/rGO@MnO2 particles could provide vast accessible active sites and alleviate volume change. The tight connection between MnO2 and carbon skeleton could facilitate electron transportation and enhance structural stability. Due to the special structure, the rGO-wrapped CNT/rGO@MnO2 porous film as an anode shows a high capacity, excellent rate performance, and superior cycling stability (1344.2 mAh g(-1) over 630 cycles at 2 A g(-1), 608.5 mAh g(-1) over 1000 cycles at 7.5 A g(-1)). Furthermore, the evolutions of microstructure and chemical valence occurring inside the electrode after cycling are investigated to illuminate the structural superiority for energy storage. The excellent electrochemical performance of this freestanding flexible electrode makes it an attractive candidate for practical application in flexible energy storage.
