Abstract:In this study, a polyethylene-modified activated carbon (PE-AC) nanocomposite was fabricated by the hot pressing technique. The adsorption properties of the PE-AC nanocomposite were examined against methylene blue (MB) as the target adsorbate. Under optimal conditions (AC to polyethylene weight ratio:3:1; sintering temperature; 150 degrees C; sintering time:30 min. Under these conditions, the BET surface area and average pore size of PE-AC nanocomposite were measured as 527.754 m(2) g(-1) and 2.24 nm, respectively. The adsorption of MB on the PE-AC nanocomposite was studied using the batch technique, and the effects of initial dye concentration, reaction temperature and time were analyzed. The results showed that the adsorption process achieved equilibrium within 240 min and the adsorption capacity of PE-AC nanocomposite for MB was 44.42 mg g(-1). Kinetic data, equilibrium isotherms and thermodynamic parameters were evaluated to fully understand the nature of the adsorption. The adsorption kinetic data can be better described by a pseudo-second-order model and the Freundlich model allowed the best fit between experimental and simulated data. The calculation values of thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption phenomenon was spontaneous and endothermic, with reaction enthalpy (Delta H-theta) and entropy (Delta S-theta) determined as 10.875 kJ/mol and 0.0515 kJ/(mol.), respectively.
