Abstract:Three new asymmetric acceptor-donor-acceptor structured molecules are designed and synthesized by incorporating indenothiophene as the central core. Their bandgaps and energy levels can be easily tuned by varying the electron withdrawing ability of the terminal groups such as dicyanovinyl, 3-ethylrhodanine, and 2-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-3-ethyl-rhodanine. Inverted polymer solar cells using these molecules as acceptors and PTB7-Th as a donor material afford a highest power conversion efficiency of 7.49% with a high open circuit voltage of 1.02 V as well as a low energy loss of 0.59 eV.

Abstract:Four A-D-A type small molecules using 4,4,9,9-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)- indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene as central building block, bithiophene or terthiophene as π-bridges, alkyl cyanoacetate or rhodanine as end acceptor groups were synthesized and investigated as electron donors in solution-processed organic solar cells (OSCs). These molecules showed excellent thermal stability with decomposition temperatures over 360 °C, relatively low HOMO levels of -5.18 to -5.22 eV, and strong optical absorption from 350 to 670 nm with high molar extinction coefficient of 1.1 × 10(5) to 1.6 × 10(5) M(-1) cm(-1) in chloroform solution. OSCs based on blends of these molecules and PC71BM achieved average power conversion efficiencies of 2.32 to 5.09% (the best 5.32%) after thermal annealing. The effects of thiophene bridge length and end acceptor groups on absorption, energy level, charge transport, morphology, and photovoltaic properties of the molecules were investigated.

Abstract:This review systematically summarizes asymmetric small‐molecule acceptors and donors, exploring their structure‐performance relationship, molecular packing, and morphology. Balancing open circuit voltage and short‐circuit current density, reducing charge recombination and non‐radiative recombination are crucial for enhancing photovoltaic performance in asymmetric materials. Finally, challenges and prospects for future development and application of asymmetric molecules and asymmetric strategies are discussed. The conjugated small‐molecule materials of organic solar cells have always played a crucial role in light‐harvesting, charge transport, morphology optimization, and the attainment of efficient devices. The advancement of novel materials and the understanding of underlying molecular design rules serve as the driving force for furthering efficient and stable photovoltaic devices. Among a variety of design principles, the symmetry‐breaking strategy, which is well developed in 3,9‐bis(2‐methylene‐(3‐(1,1‐dicyanomethylene)‐indanone))‐5,5,11,11‐tetrakis(4‐hexylphenyl)‐dithieno[2,3‐d:2′,3′‐d']‐s‐indaceno[1,2‐b:5,6‐b']dithiophene (ITIC)‐series acceptors, recently demonstrates great potential in small‐molecule acceptors and donors for realizing high power conversion efficiency. In this review, in order to give a deep insight on asymmetric strategy, the small‐molecule acceptors and donors are systematically summarized with asymmetric structure to elucidate structure‐performance relationship, molecular packing behaviors, and morphology evolution. Not only the delicate balance between open circuit voltage and short‐circuit current density, but also the reductions in charge recombination and non‐radiative recombination are considered to play the key points in improving the photovoltaic performance when the asymmetric molecule is used as host or guest materials. Finally, concise challenges and outlooks are provided for the future development and application of asymmetric molecules and symmetry‐breaking strategies.

Abstract:The first two asymmetric-indenothiophenebased donor-acceptor copolymers (PITBT and PITFBT) are prepared through Stille coupling reactions between distannyl indenothiophene and brominated benzothiadiazole derivatives. The best performing solar cell fabricated from PITFBT exhibits a power conversion efficiency of 9.14% which demonstrates a great potential of the asymmetric indenothiophene for high-performance copolymers.

Abstract:Recently, solution-processed organic solar cells combining small-molecule donor and nonfullerene acceptor have achieved breakthrough results with the certified efficiency over 15%. These impressive progresses are driven by the concerted efforts of modifying the donor and acceptor materials and optimizing the morphology. Considering the defined chemical structures and easily tuned properties of small-molecule materials, it is of great necessity and importance to pay more attentions on the topic of all-small molecule organic solar cells. Here, we summarize the recent progress of all-small molecule organic solar cells from the prospect of materials' evolutions and expect to provide some hints for its future developments. The involved small-molecule donors including oligothiophene-, benzodithiophene-, naphthodithiophene-, and porphyrin-based materials are discussed to illustrate the relationship of chemical structures, properties, and device performance. Then, the small-molecule nonfullerene acceptors in all-small molecules organic solar cells are discussed to highlight their vital role. Finally, we will present the challenges and future of this research area.

Abstract:A new linear A–D–A type low band gap small molecule (IDT-2DPP) based on 4,4,9,9-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-4,9-dihydro-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b′]dithiophene (IDT) and 2,5-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2H,5H)-dione (DPP) was designed and synthesized by Pd-catalyzed Stille coupling reaction. IDT-2DPP exhibits good solubility and good thermal stability with a decomposition temperature of 395 °C. IDT-2DPP shows strong absorption from 500 to 700 nm with a high molar extinction coefficient of 1.3 × 105 M−1 cm−1 at the absorption peak (640 nm) in chloroform solution. The HOMO and LUMO levels of IDT-2DPP were estimated to be −5.11 and −3.32 eV, respectively. Solution processed bulk-heterojunction solar cells using IDT-2DPP as a donor material blending with PC71BM as an acceptor yielded a power conversion efficiency of 2.82%, and solar cells using IDT-2DPP as an acceptor material blending with P3HT as a donor yielded a power conversion efficiency of 0.83% with a high Voc of 1.17 V.

Abstract:The development of small-molecule organic solar cells with the required efficiency depends on the information obtained from molecular-level studies. In this context, 39 small-molecule donors featuring isoindigo as an acceptor moiety have been meticulously crafted for potential applications in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells. These molecules follow the D2-A-D1-A-D2 and D2-A-π-D1-π-A-D2 framework. Similar molecules considered in the previous experimental study (molecules R1 ((3E,3″E)-6,6″-(benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl)bis(1,1'-dimethyl-[3,3'-biindolinylidene]-2,2'-dione)) and R2 ((3E,3″E)-6,6″-(4,8-dimethoxybenzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl)bis(1,1'-dimethyl-[3,3'-biindolinylidene]-2,2'-dione))) have been chosen as reference molecules. Molecules with and without π-spacers have been considered to understand the impact of the length of the π-spacer on intramolecular charge-transfer transitions and absorption properties. A detailed investigation is carried out to establish the relationship between the structure and photovoltaic parameters using density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory methods. The newly developed molecules exhibit better electronic, excited-state, and charge transport properties than the reference molecules. Additionally, model donor-acceptor interfaces are constructed by integrating the designed donor molecules with fullerene/nonfullerene acceptors. The electronic and excited-state properties of these interfaces are rigorously evaluated. Results elucidate that the donor comprising of isoindigo-bithiophene-pyrroloindacenodithiophene (IIG-T2-PIDT) emerges as a promising candidate for bulk heterojunction solar cells based on nonfullerene acceptors. This research provides systematic design strategies for the development of small-molecule donors for organic solar cells.

Abstract:We designed and synthesized an asymmetric non-fullerene small molecule acceptor (NF-SMA) IDT-TNIC with an A–D–π–A structure, based on an indacenodithiophene (IDT) central core, with a unidirectional non-fused alkylthio-thiophene (T) π-bridge, and 2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalen-1-ylidene)malononitrile (NIC) extended terminal groups. IDT-TNIC molecules still maintain a good coplanar structure, which benefits from the non-covalent conformational locks (NCL) between O···S and S···S. The asymmetric structure increases the molecular dipole moment, and the extended terminal group broadens the absorption of the material, resulting in an excellent photovoltaic performance of IDT-TNIC. The photovoltaic device, based on PBDB-T:IDT-TNIC, exhibits an energetic PCE of 11.32% with a high Voc of 0.87 V, high Jsc of 19.85 mA cm−2, and a low energy loss of 0.57 eV. More importantly, IDT-TNICs with asymmetric structures show a superior property compared to symmetric IDT-Ns. The results demonstrate that it is an effectual strategy to enhance the properties of asymmetric A–D–π–A-based NF-SMAs with non-fused NCL π-bridges and extended terminal groups.

Abstract:Symmetric-breaking strategy has broadly applied in organic photovoltaic material design while a comprehensive understanding of the effects of two dimension (2D) asymmetric side chains in all-small-molecule organic solar cells (ASM-OSCs) is rarely studied. Herein, new building-block based on asymmetric 2D side chain with halogen modification is designed in constructing small molecular donors to fine-tune the bulk heterojunction thin film as well as electronic properties. In comparison with the symmetric BTR-Cl, asymmetric counterpart TB- and TB-F-based blends exhibit an optimal hierarchical morphology with multi-scale domains, enhanced D/A molecular interactions and interfacial packing at unilateral chain, and homogeneous vertical phase distribution. Transient absorption measurement reveals that enlarged exciton diffusion coefficient and fast exciton dissociation process is achieved in TB-F based device, enabling a more percolation path for charge transport, suppressed bimolecular recombination and reduced energy disorder as well. As a consequence, a champion efficiency of 17.0% with remarkable increased short-circuit current density and fill factor is recorded in binary ASM-OSCs. Overall, this work elucidates important 2D side chain symmetric-breaking strategy that precisely control and optimize the material properties and convey design inspiration for future higher performance ASM-OSCs.

Abstract:Angular indaceno[2,1-b:6,5-b′]dithiophene (a-IDT) as an analogue of linear-IDT (l-IDT), in which the central phenyl ring was linked to the β-position of the thiophene ring but fused on its α-position, was designed and exploited via intramolecular annulation. Two A–D–A type small molecule acceptors (SMAs) l-IDTBTRh and a-IDTBTRh, with l-IDT and a-IDT as the central cores, benzothiadiazole (BT) as the π-bridge acceptor segments and 3-ethylrhodanine as the end-capping groups, were synthesized and employed for P3HT-based fullerene free organic solar cells. The geometric shape of the l-IDT and a-IDT subunits plays a pivotal role in governing the optoelectronic properties, the charge mobility, the morphology and the photovoltaic performance of the resulting acceptors. Preliminarily, the device based on P3HT/l-IDTBTRh (1 : 08, w/w) displayed a circuit current density (Jsc) of 8.81 mA cm−2, an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.86 V and a fill factor (FF) of 71.0%, delivering a decent PCE of 5.38%, which is associated with the lower bandgap, the better charge mobility and the morphology. Despite the inferior photovoltaic performance (2.53%), solar cells based on BHJ blends of a-IDTBTRh and P3HT offer a remarkably higher Voc of 0.92 V as a result of the high-lying LUMO energy level (−3.59 eV), representing one of the highest values among the reported IDT-based A–D–A type SMAs for solar cells containing P3HT. The results suggested that introducing an a-IDT segment as the central core into A–D–A type SMAs can effectively increase the LUMO energy level of SMAs, offering an efficient strategy to design non-fullerene small molecule acceptors with high Voc based-P3HT organic solar cells.
Solution-processed Small-Molecule Solar Cells: Breaking the 10% Power Conversion Efficiency

Abstract:A two-dimensional conjugated small molecule (SMPV1) was designed and synthesized for high performance solution-processed organic solar cells. This study explores the photovoltaic properties of this molecule as a donor, with a fullerene derivative as an acceptor, using solution processing in single junction and double junction tandem solar cells. The single junction solar cells based on SMPV1 exhibited a certified power conversion efficiency of 8.02% under AM 1.5 G irradiation (100 mW cm−2). A homo-tandem solar cell based on SMPV1 was constructed with a novel interlayer (or tunnel junction) consisting of bilayer conjugated polyelectrolyte, demonstrating an unprecedented PCE of 10.1%. These results strongly suggest solution-processed small molecular materials are excellent candidates for organic solar cells.

Abstract:Abstract Although asymmetric molecular design has been widely demonstrated effective for organic photovoltaics (OPVs), the correlation between asymmetric molecular geometry and their optoelectronic properties is still unclear. To access this issue, we have designed and synthesized several symmetric-asymmetric non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) pairs with identical physical and optoelectronic properties. Interestingly, we found that the asymmetric NFAs universally exhibited increased open-circuit voltage compared to their symmetric counterparts, due to the reduced non-radiative charge recombination. From our molecular-dynamic simulations, the asymmetric NFA naturally exhibits more diverse molecular interaction patterns at the donor (D):acceptor (A) interface as compared to the symmetric ones, as well as higher D:A interfacial charge-transfer state energy. Moreover, it is observed that the asymmetric structure can effectively suppress triplet state formation. These advantages enable a best efficiency of 18.80%, which is one of the champion results among binary OPVs. Therefore, this work unambiguously demonstrates the unique advantage of asymmetric molecular geometry, unveils the underlying mechanism, and highlights the manipulation of D:A interface as an important consideration for future molecular design.

Abstract:Asymmetric non‐fullerene small molecules acceptor (as‐NF‐SMAs) exhibit greater vitality in photovoltaic materials compared to their symmetric counterparts due to their larger dipole moments and stronger intermolecular interactions, which facilitate exciton dissociation and charge transmission in organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, we introduced a new as‐NF‐SMAs, named IDT‐TNIC, as the third component in ternary organic solar cells (TOSCs). The asymmetric IDT‐TNIC used indacenodithiophene (IDT) as the central core, alkylthio‐thiophene as a unilateral π‐bridge and extended end groups as electron‐withdrawing. Due to the non‐covalent conformational lock (NCL) established between O···S and S···S, the IDT‐TNIC molecule preserves its coplanar structure effectively. Furthermore, IDT‐TNIC exhibits complementary absorption and excellent compatibility with donor and acceptor materials, as well as optimized ladder energy level arrangement, resulting in a higher and more balanced μh/μe value, more homogeneous and suitable phase separation morphology in TOSCs. Thus, the PCE of the TOSCs reached 17% when the weight ratio of PM6:Y6:IDT‐TNIC was 1:1.1:0.1, and it is noteworthy that when the device area was increased to 1 cm2, the PCE could still be maintained at over 14%. Detailed studies and analysis indicate that IDT‐TNIC has great potential as a third component in OSCs and for large‐scale printing in the future.

Abstract:Two novel acceptor-donor- acceptor type small molecules based on a two-dimensional conjugated naphtho[1,2b:5,6-b']dithiophene (NDT) unit containing alkylthienyl or alkylphenyl side chains, named as NDTT-CNCOO and NDTP-CNCOO, respectively, were designed and synthesized. Compared with NDTT-CNCOO, NDTP-CNCOO-based bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells exhibited higher fill factors, higher short current density, and higher power conversion efficiencies. Such performance benefitted from highly ordered structures, excellent charge transport property, and good film formation capability. The fill factors of BHJ solar cells using NDTP-CNCOO as a donor and [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as an acceptor were all above 70% with thicknesses of active layers ranging from 100 to 300 nm. In particular, the optimal power conversion efficiency of the solar cell devices reached 7.20% with an active layer thickness of 300 nm, which is the best result reported for NDT-based small molecule solar cells.

Abstract:To broaden the absorption spectra, modify the bulk-heterojunction microstructure, and suppress morphological evolution of the host blend, we introduce an asymmetric small-molecule acceptor, L8-S9, with a narrow optical band gap and good molecular crystallinity, into the MPhS-C2:L8-BO binary system. The resulting ternary system achieved a champion power conversion efficiency of 18.10% and exhibited excellent light-soaking stability, with a T80 value of approximately 1,000 h.

Abstract:Herein, we have designed and synthesized two novel BODIPY dimers based small molecules denoted as ZMH-1 and ZMH-2 covalently linked and functionalized with triphenylamine (TPA) (ZMH-1) and carbazole (CZ) (ZMH-2) units as the electron donor at the 3- and 5- positions of the BODIPY core, respectively. Their optical and electrochemical properties were investigated. We have fabricated all small molecule bulk heterojunction organic solar cells using these BODIPY based small molecules as electron donors along with fullerene derivative (PC71BM) and medium bandgap non-fullerene acceptor IDT-TC as electron acceptors. The optimized OSCs based on ZMH-1:PC71BM, ZMH-2:PC71BM, ZMH-1:IDT-IC and ZMH-2:IDT-IC attain overall PCE of 8.91 %, 6.61 %, 11.28 %, and 5.48 %, respectively. Moreover, when a small amount of PC71BM as guest acceptor was added into the binary host ZMH-1:IDT-TC and ZMH-2:IDT-TC, the ternary OSCs based on ZMH-1 and ZMH-2 reach PCE of 13.70 % and 12.71 %, respectively.
