Abstract:Understanding the performance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in photocatalysis is pivotal for advancing their application in environmental remediation. However, techniques for investigating the generation and transformation mechanism of ROS have been largely overlooked. In this study, considering g-C3N4 to be a model photocatalyst, we have focused on the ROS generation and transformation for efficient photocatalytic NO removal. It was found that the key to improving the photocatalysis performance was to enhance the ROS transformation from •O2− to •OH, elevating the production of •OH. The ROS directly participate in the photocatalytic NO removal and tailor the rate-determining step, which is required to overcome the high activation energy of the intermediate conversion. Using a closely combined experimental and theoretical method, this work provides a new protocol to investigate the ROS behavior on g-C3N4 for effective NO removal and clarifies the reaction mechanism at the atomic level, which enriches the understanding of ROS in photocatalytic environmental remediation.
Highly Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic NOx Purification and Conversion Pathway on Self-Structurally Modified G-C3n4 Nanosheets.

Abstract:The unmodified graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) suffers from low photocatalytic activity because of the unfavourable structure. In the present work, we reported a simple self-structural modification strategy to optimize the microstructure of g-C3N4 and obtained graphene-like g-C3N4 nanosheets with porous structure. In contrast to traditional thermal pyrolysis preparation of g-C3N4, the present thermal condensation was improved via pyrolysis of thiourea in an alumina crucible without a cover, followed by secondary heat treatment. The popcorn-like formation and layer-by-layer thermal exfoliation of graphene-like porous g-C3N4 was proposed to explain the formation mechanism. The photocatalytic removal performance of both NO and NO2 with the graphene-like porous g-C3N4 for was significantly enhanced by self-structural modification. Trapping experiments and in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) measurement were conducted to detect the active species during photocatalysis and the conversion pathway of g-C3N4 photocatalysis for NOx purification was revealed. The photocatalytic activity of graphene-like porous g-C3N4 was highly enhanced due to the improved charge separation and increased oxidation capacity of the O2- radicals and holes. This work could not only provide a novel self-structural modification for design of highly efficient photocatalysts, but also offer new insights into the mechanistic understanding of g-C3N4 photocatalysis.

Abstract:We have developed the next generation of photocatalytic testing to observe the gas-phase photocatalytic reactions in situ. It is based on modified Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) unit equipped with the Smart Collector system. We have employed UV diode coupled with fiber optics to illuminate the sample while simultaneous collecting the diffuse reflectance spectra. This method was applied to study the NO2 photocatalytic conversion on nanosize gold modified TiO2 samples. We have successfully demonstrated that both gas phase and surface adsorbed species can be identified and used to compare activities of various catalysts. We have found that gold nanoparticles have significantly increased the activity of the catalysts for both gas phase and liquid phase oxidation, resulting in more than quadrupling the NO2 photocatalytic conversion in the gas phase.
Controlling the secondary pollutant on B-doped g-C3N4 during photocatalytic NO removal: a combined DRIFTS and DFT investigation

Abstract:yThe accumulation of a toxic intermediate (NO2) during photocatalytic NO oxidation would lead to secondary pollution and largely limit the application of photocatalytic technology in air purification. Accordingly, the problems can be well tackled by employing a novel co-pyrolysis method to construct B-doped g-C3N4 (CNB), which could efficiently enhance the charge separation and dramatically inhibit the generation of the secondary pollutant (NO2) on CNB in contrast to the pristine CN. The effects of B-doping on the local electronic structure, reactant activation, and optical properties of CN were revealed. O-2 activation was promoted on CNB owing to the localized electrons. With the combination of in situ DRIFTS verification and DFT simulation, it was revealed that the activation barrier of NO oxidation on CNB was significantly reduced, which facilitated the conversion of NO into the final product (NO3-). Subsequently, the mechanism for the inhibition of toxic NO2 was unraveled and the conversion pathways of photocatalytic NO oxidation on B-doped g-C3N4 have been proposed. The present work demonstrated a new strategy to optimize the photocatalytic performance for safer and efficient air purification.

Abstract:Graphene-like porous g-C3N4 nanosheets were synthesized via direct pyrolysis of thiourea followed by a thermal exfoliation. With increased exfoliation temperature, the color of the resulting samples gradually became shallow, and the thickness and size of the layers were decreased. A formation mechanism involving layer-by-layer exfoliation coupled with layer splitting was proposed. The band structure of the g-C3N4 nanosheets was continuously tuned because of quantum size effect. Time-resolved decay spectra indicated that the radiative lifetime of charge carriers (τ 1 and τ 2) increased from 4.13 and 26.23ns for bulk g-C3N4 to 5.36 and 36.57ns for graphene-like g-C3N4 nanosheets. The g-C3N4 nanosheet samples were applied for visible light photocatalytic removal of NOx in air. The performance of porous g-C3N4 nanosheets was significantly enhanced with increased exfoliation temperature from 450 to 550°C. Moreover, photochemical and structural stability was well maintained after multiple reaction cycles. By monitoring the reaction intermediate NO2, it was found that the generation of NO2 was inhibited. The activity enhancement of graphene-like g-C3N4 nanosheets can be predominantly ascribed to the prolonged lifetime and improved photo-oxidation ability of charge carriers arising from the unique electronic structure. As the synthesis method for graphene-like g-C3N4 nanosheets with high a performance is simple, the g-C3N4 nanosheets can be envisioned to be applicable in environmental remediation and solar energy conversion.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2-D) exfoliated nanomaterials have attracted tremendous attentions because of the unique surface structures and increased reactive sites for various applications. Herein, a one-step pyrolysis method was used to fabricate ultrathin C3N4 photocatalysts, which had significant advantages over conventional post-exfoliation strategies with labor-intensive and time-consuming procedures. We found that oxygen doping by atmospheric air could effectively break the interlayer and intralayer interactions in polymeric C3N4, forming 2-D ultrathin nanocatalysts with high activity for persulfate activation. The integration of photocatalysis and persulfate oxidation resulted in 21- and 15-fold enhancement in the degradation of Bisphenol A pollutants compared to the individual reactions. The significant contributions of atmospheric oxygen doping to the charge separation and surface reactions were fundamentally investigated. This work not only provides a facile strategy to exfoliate polymeric semiconductor into ultrathin nanostructures, but also reveals valuable insight into the exploration of high-performance catalysts for the synergistic removal of environmental contaminants.
Roles of N-Vacancies over Porous G-C3n4 Microtubes During Photocatalytic NO X Removal.

Abstract:The development of catalysts that effectively activate target pollutants and promote their complete conversion is an admirable objective in the environmental photocatalysis field. In this work, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) microtubes with tunable N-vacancy concentrations were controllably fabricated using an in situ soft-chemical method. The morphological evolution of g-C3N4, from the bulk to the porous tubular architecture, is discussed in detail with the aid of time-resolved hydrothermal experiments. We found that the NO removal ratio and apparent reaction rate constant of the g-C3N4 microtubes were 1.8 and 2.6 times higher than those of pristine g-C3N4, respectively. By combining detailed experimental characterization and density functional theory calculations, the effects of N-vacancies in the g-C3N4 microtubes on O2 and NO adsorption activation, electron capture, and electronic structure were systematically investigated. These results demonstrate that surface N-vacancies act as specific sites for the adsorption activation of reactants and photoinduced electron capture, while enhancing the light-absorbing capability of g-C3N4. Moreover, the porous wall structures of the as-prepared g-C3N4 microtubes facilitate the diffusion of reactants, and their tubular architectures favor the oriented transfer of charge carriers. The intermediates formed during photocatalytic NO removal processes were identified by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and different reaction pathways over pristine and N-deficient g-C3N4 are proposed. This study provides a feasible strategy for air pollution control over g-C3N4 by introducing N-vacancy and porous tubular architecture simultaneously.
Template-free Precursor-Surface-etching Route to Porous, Thin G-C3n4 Nanosheets for Enhancing Photocatalytic Reduction and Oxidation Activity

Abstract:Metal-free graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has sparked considerable interest due to its efficient photocatalytic activity in many fields. Development of new tactics toward improving the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4 remains active and challenging. In this study, we uncover an unprecedented template-free precursor (melamine) pre-treatment protocol to achieve porous g-C3N4 nanosheets for efficient photocatalytic reduction and oxidation reaction. The introduction of thiourea solution in the hydrothermal pre-treatment process etches the surface of melamine, thus yielding the porous, thin g-C3N4 nanosheets. The microstructure and porosity of g-C3N4 can be adjusted only by controlling the thiourea amount. The as-obtained porous g-C3N4 nanosheets are found to be endowed with not only increased specific surface area, but also enhanced photoabsorption in the visible light region. Systematic characterizations of the charge movement behavior (transient photocurrent, linear sweep voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectra, photoluminescence and surface photovoltage spectroscopy) disclose that the separation of photogenerated charge carriers is remarkably boosted by fabricating such a porous nanosheet structure. Benefiting from these advantages, porous g-C3N4 nanosheets present profoundly enhanced visible-light photocatalytic performance for H-2 evolution (3.3-fold increase) and NO removal from the gaseous phase (5.5 times increase) in contrast to the pristine bulk g-C3N4. Our current study may offer an alternative approach to designing high-performance g-C3N4 nanomaterials for energy and environmental applications.

Abstract:Up to now, a great number of catalysts have been reported that are active in the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, supported noble-metal catalysts (especially Pt-based catalysts) are still the most excellent ones for this reaction. In this study, Pt species supported on γ-Al2O3 and ranging from single-atom sites to clusters (less than 1 nm) and 1–2 nm nanoparticles were prepared and investigated for oxidizing C2H4. The Pt-loaded γ-Al2O3 nanoflakes (PtAl-NF) and Pt-loaded γ-Al2O3 nanowires (PtAl-NW) were successfully prepared. The samples were characterized using XRD, TEM, XPS, HAADF-STEM, and in situ DRIFTS. Based on in situ DRIFTS, a simple surface reaction mechanism was developed. The stable intermediates CO on single-atom Pt, subnanometer Pt particles, and fully exposed Pt clusters could be explained by the strong binding of CO molecule poisoning Pt sites. Moreover, the oxidation of C2H4 was best achieved by Pt particles that were 1–2 nm in size and the catalytic activity of PtAl-NF was better when it had less Pt. Lastly, the most exposed (110) facets of γ-Al2O3 nanoflakes were more resistant to water than the majorly exposed (100) facets of γ-Al2O3 nanowires.

In Situ Drifts Study on Non-Thermal Plasma-Assisted Nox Reduction by Propene over Ag/Al2o3 Catalyst

Abstract:The non-thermal plasma (NTP)-assisted selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by propene over the Ag/Al2O3 catalyst was investigated. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) studies were carried out on the NO and C3H6 adsorption and SCR reactions over Ag/Al2O3 with or without NTP pretreatment. The results showed that the low-temperature activity of C3H6-SCR was remarkably enhanced with the assistance of NTP in the presence of excess oxygen. The activation of propene was the key step in C3H6-SCR over Ag/Al2O3. After the application of NTP, the amount of -NCO, R-NO2 and organic acid species over Ag/Al2O3 significantly increased, which caused a high catalytic activity at low temperatures (< 350 degrees C). Two reaction paths were proposed in both SCR and NTP-SCR. At low reaction temperatures, -NCO was the key intermediate to generate N-2, while it was -CN at high reaction temperatures.
Facile synthesis of Bi2O3 nanocrystals for photocatalytic NO oxidation and its conversion pathway via in situ DRIFTS

Abstract:In this work, the two different polymorphs of Bi2O3, including α-Bi2O3 and β-Bi2O3, were fabricated by the post-calcined the precursor at 300 and 500 °C respectively. The pathway of photocatalytic NO oxidation over the as-prepared photocatalyst (β-Bi2O3) was explored. The results showed that NO removal ratio on as-synthesis samples followed the order: β-Bi2O3 (32 %) > the precursor (13 %) > α-Bi2O3 (5 %). The ESR and in situ DRIFTS demonstrated that the superoxide ( O2 −), as the main radical, can react with the absorbed NO on the surface of β-Bi2O3 to generate the final products NO3 − and NO2 −. Therefore, such findings reveal the possible photocatalytic pathway of NO oxidation on β-Bi2O3 based on in situ DRIFTS and give insight into understanding the polymorphism of Bi2O3 in efficient photocatalytic NO oxidation under the visible light.

Abstract:Oxidation of low-concentration nitrogen oxides (NOx) to nitrate with solar energy is an efficient way to remove them from atmospheric environment under semi-enclosed or ill-airflow conditions. However, conventional photocatalysts applied in NOx removal face the challenges of low efficiency and generation of toxic byproducts (nitrogen dioxide, NO2) leading to secondary pollution. To tackle these issues, monodisperse gold nanoparticles supported on graphitic carbon nitride (Au@CN) was designed and fabricated by a facile method. The Au@CN exhibited a highly enhanced nitric oxide (NO) oxidation activity and superior NO2 inhibition ability. The microstructures, optical properties and electronic structure of the photocatalysts were analyzed with advanced tools. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) was applied to dynamically monitor and reveal the reaction process at time sequence. Density functional theory (DFT) and electron spin resonance (ESR) were combined to explore the oxidation mechanism at molecular level. It was found that (1) the presence of Au metal site favored the adsorption and activation of the gas molecules; (2) the high separation efficiency of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs enhanced the production of radicals for NO oxidation; (3) the unique electronic structure of Au@CN prefers nitrate formation with a low rate-determining barrier and largely suppress the toxic intermediate NO2, thus effectively controlling the secondary pollution. The present work could provide a novel mechanistic insight into visible-light photocatalytic NO oxidation and selectivity on Au@CN which is beneficial for designing efficient and safe photocatalyst with low environmental risk.

Abstract:In order to achieve efficient photocatalytic NO removal, N-doped (BiO)(2)CO3 hierarchical superstructures deposited with Pt quantum dots (2-4 nm) were fabricated by a one-pot hydrothermal method using ammonium bismuth citrate and H2PtCl6 as precursors. In such a combined way, visible light absorption and charge carrier separation can be simultaneously enhanced. The as-prepared Pt/N-doped (BiO)(2)CO3 catalysts exhibited a highly enhanced visible-light photocatalytic performance for NO removal and phenol degradation, which can be ascribed to the N doping that narrows the band gap, the formation of a Schottky barrier because of Pt that promotes electron/hole separation, and scattering and surface reflecting effects (SSR) caused by the hierarchical architecture. To reveal the reaction mechanism of photocatalytic NO oxidation, in situ DRIFTS investigation was applied to probe the reaction process, and a new intermediate, NO+, was firstly discovered during photocatalysis. Pt quantum dot deposition could change the reaction pathway via the inhibition of NO2 production. Based on ESR trapping and time-dependent observation of the reaction products, a new photocatalytic reaction pathway was proposed for photocatalytic NO oxidation with Pt/N-doped (BiO)(2)CO3. The present work could provide new perspectives for advancing the photocatalysis efficiency, offer a new insight into the photocatalytic NO oxidation process and promote large-scale environmental applications of high-performance photocatalysts.
Boosting Visible-Light Photocatalytic NO Removal by Non-intrinsic Oxygen Vacancies in Graphitic Carbon Nitride

Abstract:Modifying photocatalysts for effective NO removal has profound implications for environmental protection. In this work, a novel g-C 3 N 4 containing non-intrinsic oxygen vacancies (V O -CN) is synthesized via a facile oxygen pre-doping followed by elimination. Compared to pristine g-C 3 N 4 , V O -CN exhibits remarkably enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity, increasing NO removal by 54.3%, with high NO 3 - selectivity. This photocatalytic enhancement is attributed to the non-intrinsic oxygen vacancies introduced in Vo-CN. As comprehensively revealed by experimental characterizations coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results show that the midgap state generated in the V O -CN electronic band structure accelerates photogenerated electron-hole separation. Additionally, the unique surface structure of V O -CN provides favorable channels for carrier migration while enhancing O 2 and NO adsorption. Consequently, the markedly improved generation of reactive oxygen species by Vo-CN promotes highly efficient NO removal. This work provides novel insights into designing high-performance g-C 3 N 4 -based photocatalysts for eliminating hazardous NO pollutants.

Abstract:The preparation of ultrathin nanosheets is conducive to increasing the material's specific surface area and introducing suitable defect sites. This facilitates the enhancement of the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers and improves the adsorption and degradation efficiency toward pollutants. Various nitrogen-rich precursors were employed for the synthesis of bulk g-C3N4 (BCN) and its ultrathin nanosheets, with a focus on investigating their photocatalytic performance. The degree of polymerization of g-C3N4 influenced its hydrogen bonding and C/N ratio, affecting the ultrathin nanosheet microstructure. Oxidation disrupted the tri-s-triazine rings in the ultrathin nanosheets of g-C3N4 prepared via dicyandiamide. However, g-C3N4 prepared from urea and melamine as precursors retained its primary characteristics after thermal oxidative exfoliation, attributed to interlayer hydrogen bonds, small lateral size at low polymerization degrees, and increased vacancy defects. In the photocatalytic degradation system, two-dimensional nanosheets of g-C3N4 synthesized from urea exhibited the highest catalytic efficiency.

Abstract:For photocatalytic removal of nitric oxide (NO), two major issues need to be addressed: incomplete oxidation of NO and deactivation of the photocatalyst. In this study, we aimed to solve these two problems by constructing an all-solid-state Z-scheme heterojunction (PI-g-C3N4) consisting of g-C3N4 surface modified with perylene imides (PI). PI-g-C3N4 exhibits significant enhancement in photocatalytic activity (in comparison to pristine g-C3N4) when examined for NO removal. More importantly, the Z-scheme charge separation within PI-g-C3N4 populates electrons and holes into the increased energy levels, thereby enabling direct reduction of O2 to H2O2 and direct oxidation of NO to NO2. H2O2 can further oxidize NO2 to NO3– ion at a different location (via diffusion), thus alleviating the deactivation of the catalyst. The results presented may shed light on the design of visible photocatalysts with tunable reactivity for application in solar energy conversion and environmental sustainability.
