Abstract:The photonic effect on the photocatalytic activity of the continuous titania inverse opal (TiO2-IO) films differing only by the air sphere size (185 and 165 nm) and prepared by a colloid crystal template approach and annealing at different temperatures (700 and 800 °C) has been investigated by aqueous solution degradation of dye pollutants using mesoporous TiO2 thin films as the reference. The high quality of TiO2 inverse opal films has been confirmed by a blue shift of the Photonic Band Gap (PBG) with increasing light incident angle. Excellent agreement was found between theoretical and experimental reflectance spectra, confirming the photonic crystal structure of the samples. The slow photon light absorption enhancement effect inducing highly improved photocatalytic degradation of dye pollutants has been revealed in an aqueous reaction system. When compared with the mesoporous (m-TiO2) films obtained under the same conditions, all the TiO2-IO films demonstrate a much higher photocatalytic activity. At a light incident angle of 0°, the TiO2-IO-700 film (air sphere size: 185 nm) showed a better photocatalytic activity than that of TIO2-IO-800 (air sphere size: 165 nm). Most importantly, with increasing light incident angle, the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2-IO-700 film decreases whilst that of the TiO2-IO-800 film increases sharply due to the enhancement of light absorption related to a slow photon effect, generating more electron-holes. The present work revealed that photocatalytic activity can be dramatically enhanced by utilizing slow photons located at the PBG edges with energies close to the electronic bandgap of the semiconductor. The study using the slow-photon effect on the basis of photonic crystals to improve the photocatalytic activity by enhancing the light absorption could be an important future research direction. The slow-photon effect can open a new exciting avenue to all the fields related to light absorption including solar cells, optical telecommunications and optical computing.

Abstract:A hetero-nanostructured photoanode with enhanced near-infrared light harvesting is developed for photo-electrochemical cells. By spatially coating upconversion nanoparticles and quantum dot photosensitizers onto TiO2 inverse opal, this architecture allows direct irradiation of upconversion nanoparticles to emit visible light that excites quantum dots for charge separation. Electrons are injected into TiO2 with minimal carrier losses due to continuous electron conducting interface.

Abstract:Periodic structures with alternating refractive indices such as inverse opal photonic crystals are capable of reducing the group velocity of light such that this slowed light can be more efficiently harvested for highly enhanced solar energy conversion. However, the generation, the manipulation and, in particular, the practical applications of these slow photons remain highly challenging. Here, we report the first proof of concept on the ability to control, in an inverse opal TiO 2 -BiVO 4 hetero-composite, the transfer of slow photons generated from the inverse opal photonic structure to the photocatalytically active BiVO 4 nanoparticles for highly enhanced visible light photoconversion. Tuning the slow photon frequencies, in order to accommodate the electronic band gap of BiVO 4 for slow photon transfer and for significantly improved light harvesting, was successfully achieved by varying the structural periodicity (pore size) of inverse opal and the light incidence angle. The photocatalytic activity of BiVO 4 in all inverse opal structures, promoted by slow photon effect, reached up to 7 times higher than those in the non-structured compact films. This work opens new avenues for the practical utilization of slow photon effect under visible light in photocatalytic energy-related applications like water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction and in photovoltaics.

Abstract:Optical effects of the plasmonic structures and the materials effects of the metal nanomaterials have recently been individually studied for enhancing performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, the effects of plasmonically induced carrier generation and enhanced carrier extraction of the carrier transport layer (i.e., plasmonic‐electrical effects) in OSCs are investigated. Enhanced charge extraction in TiO2 as a highly efficient electron transport layer by the incorporation of metal nanoparticles (NPs) is proposed and demonstrated. Efficient device performance is demonstrated by using Au NPs incorporated TiO2 at a plasmonic wavelength (560–600 nm), which is far longer than the originally necessary UV light. By optimizing the concentration ratio of the Au NPs in the NP‐TiO2 composite, the performances of OSCs with various polymer active layers are enhanced and efficiency of 8.74% is reached. An integrated optical and electrical model, which takes into account plasmonic‐induced hot carrier tunneling probability and extraction barrier between TiO2 and the active layer, is introduced. The enhanced charge extraction under plasmonic illumination is attributed to the strong charge injection of plasmonically excited electrons from NPs into TiO2. The mechanism favors trap filling in TiO2, which can lower the effective energy barrier and facilitate carrier transport in OSCs.
Enhanced Photocatalytic Properties and Photoinduced Crystallization of TiO2-Fe2O3 Inverse Opals Fabricated by Atomic Layer Deposition

Abstract:The use of solar energy for photocatalysis holds great potential for sustainable pollution reduction. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a benchmark material, effective under ultraviolet light but limited in visible light utilization, restricting its application in solar-driven photocatalysis. Previous studies have shown that semiconductor heterojunctions and nanostructuring can broaden the TiO2's photocatalytic spectral range. Semiconductor heterojunctions are interfaces formed between two different semiconductor materials that can be engineered. Especially, type II heterojunctions facilitate charge separation, and they can be obtained by combining TiO2 with, for example, iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3). Nanostructuring in the form of 3D inverse opals (IOs) demonstrated increased TiO2 light absorption efficiency of the material, by tailoring light-matter interactions through their photonic crystal structure and specifically their photonic stopband, which can give rise to a slow photon effect. Such effect is hypothesized to enhance the generation of free charges. This work focuses on the above-described effects simultaneously, through the synthesis of TiO2-Fe2O3 IOs via multilayer atomic layer deposition (ALD) and the characterization of their photocatalytic activities. Our results reveal that the complete functionalization of TiO2 IOs with Fe2O3 increases the photocatalytic activity through the slow photon effect and semiconductor heterojunction formation. We systematically explore the influence of Fe2O3 thickness on photocatalytic performance, and a maximum photocatalytic rate constant of 1.38 ± 0.09 h-1 is observed for a 252 nm template TiO2-Fe2O3 bilayer IO consisting of 16 nm TiO2 and 2 nm Fe2O3. Further tailoring the performance by overcoating with additional TiO2 layers enhances photoinduced crystallization and tunes photocatalytic properties. These findings highlight the potential of TiO2-Fe2O3 IOs for efficient water pollutant removal and the importance of precise nanostructuring and heterojunction engineering in advancing photocatalytic technologies.

Abstract:A sandwich-vacuum method was demonstrated for the fabrication of titania (TiO(2)) binary inverse opals with an open surface. In this method, a moisture-stable TiO(2) precursor was backfilled into the interstitial spaces of polystyrene binary colloidal crystals (PS bCCs), which served as a template. Removal of the template by calcination yielded TiO(2) binary inverse opals with a 3D-ordered macroporous (3DOM) structure. Optical reflectance spectra revealed the existence of a pseudostop band gap in the 3DOM TiO(2) samples. The position of the pseudostop band gap shifted to the low-wavelength region as the number ratio of small over large PS spheres was increased in the template. The sandwich-vacuum method proved to be simple and rapid for the fabrication of TiO(2) binary inverse opals without overlayers in large domains. The 3DOM TiO(2) materials were used as a photocatalyst for the degradation of benzoic acid. Results showed that in comparison to TiO(2) nanoparticles prepared under the same sintering conditions, the 3DOM TiO(2) materials displayed enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Uniform and crack-free TiO2 inverse opal thin-films were successfully fabricated by simple template immersion method in pre-hydrolyzed TiCl4 precursor solution even though it is difficult to fabricate crack-free inverse opals through conventional solution drop-casting sol-gel process. Here, mechanically robust polystyrene (PS) colloidal crystal template in which PS particles are linked by polyvinylpyrrolidone bridges, were immersed in pre-hydrolyzed TiCl4 precursor solution to infiltrate the templates without inducing defects. By repeated soaking and drying process, and subsequent calcination, non-uniform and crack defects-free TiO2 inverse opal thin-films were fabricated reproducibly because PS templates immersed in the precursor solution experienced consistent fluid flow into their pores at uniform precursor concentration together with suppressed capillary pressure during drying as a result of low infiltration rate per cycle. Also, as an improvement to conventional approach, this facile fabrication method is adaptable for industrial scale-up. The resulting well-developed porous TiO2 inverse opal thin-films were applied for photovoltaic clean energy conversion as electron transporting scaffolds in antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) sensitized solar cells which had high power conversion efficiency of 7.30 % (1 sun), 8.56 % (0.5 sun), and 8.34 % (0.1 sun); showcasing improved device performance over previously reported mesoporous Sb2S3-sensitized solar cells.
Slow photon amplification of gas-phase ethanol photo-oxidation in titania inverse opal photonic crystals

Abstract:Here we describe the successful fabrication of six titania inverse opal (TiO2 IO) photocatalysts with fcc[111] pseudo photonic band gaps (PBGs) tuned to span the UV–vis region. Photocatalysts were fabricated by a colloidal crystal templating and sol-gel approach – a robust and highly applicable bottom-up scheme which allowed for precise control over the geometric and optical properties of the TiO2 IO photocatalysts. Optical properties of the TiO2 IO thin films were investigated in detail by UV–vis transmittance and reflectance measurements. The PBG along the fcc[111] direction in the TiO2 IOs was dependent on the inter-planar spacing in the [111] direction, the incident angle of light and the refractive index of the medium filling the macropores in the IOs, in agreement with a modified Bragg’s law expression. Calculated photonic band structures for the photocatalysts revealed a PBG along the Γ→L direction at a/λ∼0.74, in agreement with the experimental optical data. By coupling the low frequency edge of the PBG along the [111] direction with the electronic absorption edge of anatase TiO2, a two-fold enhancement in the rate of gas phase ethanol photo-oxidation in air was achieved. This enhancement appears to be associated with a ‘slow photon’ effect that acts to both enhance TiO2 absorption and inhibit spontaneous emission (i.e. suppress electron-hole pair recombination).

Abstract:We present all-inorganic solar cells fabricated from TiO2 nanorod array and semiconductor nanocrystals. CdSe or CdTe nanocrystals are drop-casted on TiO2 nanorod arrays to form TiO2 nanorod array/semiconductor nanocrystal hybrid structure. Thermal annealing is used to remove the organic molecules on the surface of the nanocrystals which could suppress electron transport, resulting in the morphological and structural change of the nanocrystals. For CdSe nanocrystals, p-type transparent semiconductor CuSCN is introduced as solid-state electrolyte to collect holes and TiO2/CdSe/CuSCN trilayer structure is adopted. While for CdTe nanocrystals, simpler TiO2/CdTe bilayer structure is adopted. Conversion efficiency of the two solar cells reaches to 0.21% and 0.07%, respectively. The results are a step towards development of high efficiency all-inorganic TiO2 nanorod array-based solar cells. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Tracing the slow photon effect in a ZnO inverse opal film for photocatalytic activity enhancement

Abstract:Highly ordered, dense and continuous ZnO inverse opal (ZnO-IO) films with different air sphere sizes have been successfully prepared by a metal salt-based sol–gel infiltration method and used to prove and demonstrate the slow photon effect occurrence to enhance the photocatalytic activity. The obtained ZnO-IO films have a pure wurzite structure with similar crystallite size according to the XRD experiments and show very ordered macroporous structures from SEM and TEM analyses. The ZnO-IO films present a photoinduced surface wettability conversion phenomenon and the wettability of the ZnO film can be tuned from superhydrophobicity to hydrophilicity after UV-vis irradiation. Compared with the ZnO film without inverse opal structure, both ZnO-IO films demonstrate highly enhanced photocatalytic activities due to the hierarchically macro–mesoporous structure and particularly the slow photon enhanced light absorption. The synergy of the slow photon effect and hierarchically porous structure of inverse opal itself results in the highest photocatalytic activity at an incident light angle of θ = 40°. Moreover, our results suggest that the slow photon effect occurring at the red edge of PBG exhibits a higher photocatalytic reaction rate than that at the blue edge of PBG. The extraordinary enhancement of the photocatalytic activity via changing the incident light angle reveals that the slow photon effect does take place and further dramatically enhance the photocatalytic activity of ZnO-IO films. This work may open an exciting door to all the fields related to light absorption, such as solar cells, and optical and electro-optical devices.

Abstract:Solar light is widely recognized as one of the most valuable renewable energy sources for the future. However, the development of solar-energy technologies is severely hindered by poor energy-conversion efficiencies due to low optical-absorption coefficients and low quantum-conversion yield of current-generation materials. Huge efforts have been devoted to investigating new strategies to improve the utilization of solar energy. Different chemical and physical strategies have been used to extend the spectral range or increase the conversion efficiency of materials, leading to very promising results. However, these methods have now begun to reach their limits. What is therefore the next big concept that could efficiently be used to enhance light harvesting? Despite its discovery many years ago, with the potential for becoming a powerful tool for enhanced light harvesting, the slow-photon effect, a manifestation of light-propagation control due to photonic structures, has largely been overlooked. This review presents theoretical as well as experimental progress on this effect, revealing that the photoreactivity of materials can be dramatically enhanced by exploiting slow photons. It is predicted that successful implementation of this strategy may open a very promising avenue for a broad spectrum of light-energy-conversion technologies.

Abstract:While silicon photonic crystals have promised revolutionary advances in the field of optical telecommunications and optical computing, it has only recently been realized that their prowess to trap and slow photons could potentially improve the efficiency of silicon solar cells. In this work, spectral responses for the electrical properties of inverse silicon opals are evaluated and show a correlation with photonic bandgaps. In particular, a sign of the enhanced photoelectric generation by the slow photon effect is observed at the edges of photonic bandgaps.

Theoretical Demonstration of Efficiency Enhancement of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells with Double-Inverse Opal As Mirrors

Abstract:Herein we describe the employment of double-inverse opal (DIO) as a novel optical element and present a theoretical analysis of the efficiency enhancement of the designed DSSCs. We find that, compared to inverse opal (IO) as the optical element, the presence of small spheres in 10 (i.e., DIO structure) produces a great light-scattering effect and broader reflection region, leading to considerable enhancement of the photocurrent efficiency of cells. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with one DIO layer as a mirror has a photocurrent efficiency enhancement up to 47%, which is a large improvement compared to that of the IO-coupled one (28%). More remarkably, double DIO layers as a scattering layer lead to efficient enhancement of the absorptances of DSSCs in the whole visible spectrum range (400-800 nm) and a distinct increment of about 80% of photocurrent efficiency with respect to standard ones. In this work, the optimum structural parameters of such DIO optical elements needed to achieve an efficient photocurrent efficiency enhancement are provided.
Construction of Inverse-Opal ZnIn2S4 with Well-Defined 3D Porous Structure for Enhancing Photocatalytic H2 Production

Abstract:The conversion of solar energy into hydrogen using photocatalysts is a pivotal solution to the ongoing energy and environmental challenges. In this study, inverse opal (IO) ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) with varying pore sizes is synthesized for the first time via a template method. The experimental results indicate that the constructed inverse opal ZnIn2S4 has a unique photonic bandgap, and its slow photon effect can enhance the interaction between light and matter, thereby improving the efficiency of light utilization. ZnIn2S4 with voids of 200 nm (ZIS-200) achieved the highest hydrogen production rate of 14.32 μ mol h-1. The normalized rate with a specific surface area is five times higher than that of the broken structures (B-ZIS), as the red edge of ZIS-200 is coupled with the intrinsic absorption edge of the ZIS. This study not only developed an approach for constructing inverse opal multi-metallic sulfides, but also provides a new strategy for enriching efficient ZnIn2S4-based photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution from water.

Abstract:In this study, 3D-photonic crystal design was utilized to enhance incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) of WO(3) photoanodes. Large-area and high-quality WO(3) photonic crystal photoanodes with inverse opal structure were prepared. The photonic stop-bands of these WO(3) photoanodes were tuned experimentally by variation of the pore size of inverse opal structures. It was found that when the red-edge of the photonic stop-band of WO(3) inverse opals overlapped with the WO(3) electronic absorption edge at E(g) = 2.6-2.8 eV, a maximum of 100% increase in photocurrent intensity was observed under visible light irradiation (λ > 400 nm) in comparison with a disordered porous WO(3) photoanode. When the red-edge of the stop-band was tuned well within the electronic absorption range of WO(3), noticeable but less amplitude of enhancement in the photocurrent intensity was observed. It was further shown that the spectral region with a selective IPCE enhancement of the WO(3) inverse opals exhibited a blue-shift in wavelength under off-normal incidence of light, in agreement with the calculated stop-band edge locations. The enhancement could be attributed to a longer photon-matter interaction length as a result of the slow-light effect at the photonic stop-band edge, thus leading to a remarkable improvement in the light-harvesting efficiency. The present method can provide a potential and promising approach to effectively utilize solar energy in visible-light-responsive photoanodes.

Abstract:We propose a highly ordered multi-scale nanostructure of TiO(2) for applications as an anode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The structure is composed of a TiO(2) blocking layer, a TiO(2) inverse opal main body, regularly arranged transport channels between contacting spherical voids of the TiO(2) inverse opal, and TiO(2) nanoparticles coated on the spherical surfaces of the voids. The ordered and continuous backbone of the inverse opal serves as the fast electron transport pathways while the regularly arranged transport channels enable easy transport of dye and electrolyte within the structure. A multi-cycle procedure was developed to enable fabrication of thick inverse opals and easy adjustment of the inverse opal thickness. An example structure was constructed, involving a blocking layer of 90 nm thickness, an inverse opal of 100 nm voids, transport channels of 30-50 nm openings, and nanoparticles 10-15 nm in size. An open-circuit voltage decay investigation showed a significant improvement in electron lifetime for the proposed multi-scale TiO(2) nanostructure based DSSC than that of a TiO(2) nanoparticle film based DSSC, revealing the superior electron recombination characteristic offered by the proposed TiO(2) nanostructure. The conversion efficiency of the DSSC assembled from such an anode structure can reach 4% with a short-circuit current density (J(sc)) of 8.7 mA cm(-2) and open-circuit potential (V(oc)) of 0.76 V under AM 1.5 (100 mW cm(-2)) illumination.
