Abstract:ZnTe, a non-toxic low band gap semiconductor, has a direct band gap of 2.26 eV, and can be a promising candidate for non-toxic semiconductor sensitized solar cells (SSSCs). Herein, we report a simple and low-cost solution-processing approach to synthesize ZnTe nanocrystals by using dendrite-like ZnO nanorods as templates via an in situ method for application in solar cells. Structural and morphological analyses and systematic optical property investigations evidenced the successful synthesis of ZnTe nanocrystals and ZnO/ZnTe heterostructures. The measured band alignment of the heterostructures directly points to the strong effect of strain and the possibility to engineer the band offset at the ZnO/ZnTe interface. As ZnO and ZnTe exhibit a type-II energy level alignment, both significant absorption and efficient charge transfer are enabled between the two. Finally, solar cells based on the ZnO/ZnTe heterostructure were fabricated and a short-circuit photocurrent density of over 5 mA cm(-2) was achieved, benefiting from the preeminent absorption, high charge separation and transfer efficiency. A ZnS passivation layer dramatically improved the performance of the solar cells reaching a short-circuit photocurrent density of over 10 mA cm(-2), along with an increase in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 0.46% to 1.7%. Potential pathways towards further increasing this figure are discussed.

Abstract:Novel type-II core/shell structure quantum dos have been synthesized for solar cell photoelectrode material. Cd0.64Zn0.36Te and CdS were chosen as a core and shell, respectively, to generate type-II core/shell structure quantum dos (QDs). Density functional theory was employed to explore the energy structure of Cd1-xZnxTe/CdS core/shell QDs, revealing that introduction of Zn element is a feasible strategy to prepare CdTe/CdS based QDs with type-II core/shell structure. Then, Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS core/shell QDs were synthesized by aqueous phase method. Microscopic measurements showed that Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS core/shell QDs have high crystalline quality. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy together with optical spectra indicated an upward shift of the Cd0.64Zn0.36Te conduction band edge compared with CdTe, as also evidenced by systematic density functional theory based first principle calculation. Photoluminescence decay measurement also indicated the enhanced electron injection rate and decreased charge recombination of Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS QD sensitized TiO2 films. In addition, by optimizing the deposition cycles of the CdS shell, the power conversion efficiency of Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS QDs sensitized solar cells was enhanced.
Core-Shell ZnO@SnO2 Nanoparticles for Efficient Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells.

Abstract:The ideal charge transport materials should exhibit a proper energy level, high carrier mobility, sufficient conductivity, and excellent charge extraction ability. Here, a novel electron transport material was designed and synthesized by using a simple and facile solvothermal method, which is composed of the core-shell ZnO@SnO2 nanoparticles. Thanks to the good match between the energy level of the SnO2 shell and the high electron mobility of the core ZnO nanoparticles, the PCE of inorganic perovskite solar cells has reached 14.35% (J(SC): 16.45 mA cm(-2), V-OC: 1.11 V, FF: 79%), acting core-shell ZnO@SnO2 nanoparticles as the electron transfer layer. The core-shell ZnO@SnO2 nanoparticles size is 8.1 nm with the SnO2 shell thickness of 3.4 nm, and the electron mobility is seven times more than SnO2 nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the uniform core-shell ZnO@SnO2 nanoparticles is extremely favorable to the growth of inorganic perovskite films. These preliminary results strongly suggest the great potential of this novel electron transfer material in high-efficiency perovskite solar cells.
Preparation of Aluminum Doped Zinc Oxide Films with Low Resistivity and Outstanding Transparency by a Sol–gel Method for Potential Applications in Perovskite Solar Cell

Abstract:Highly transparent and conductive aluminum doped zinc oxide (AZO) films were prepared by sol–gel method on the glass substrates. The effects of doping concentration, annealing temperature and facing direction during annealing on the structural, electrical and optical properties of AZO films were studied by performing a series of characterizations including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV–vis spectrophotometry, four-point probe method and Hall effect measurement system. The results showed that the AZO films were wurtzite crystallized with c-axis preferred orientation. A minimum resistivity of 1.8 × 10−3 Ω cm and a transmittance above 90% were obtained for the film doped with 1.5 at.% aluminum, annealed at 510 °C and faced-down in the oven, which was among the best performance of the currently reported works based on sol–gel process. Moreover, energy level analysis revealed that the AZO film has a work function of 4.3 eV, exhibiting great potential in perovskite solar cell applications.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel hierarchically structured ZnO photoanode for use in quasi-solid state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) is presented. The film is composed of polydisperse spindle-shaped ZnO particles that are prepared through direct precipitation of zinc acetate in aqueous solution. Without additional pore-forming agents the microporous structure is well constructed through the packing of polydisperse ZnO particles. In the film, small ZnO particles are able to improve interparticle connectivity and offer a large internal surface area for sufficient dye-adsorption; on the other hand, particles of larger size can enhance the occurrence of light-scattering and introduce micropores for the permeation of quasi-solid state electrolytes. Meanwhile, morphologies, particle size, and specific areas of the products are controlled by altering the reactant concentration and synthetic temperature. Combined with a highly viscous polymer gel electrolyte, a device based on this ZnO photoanode shows high conversion efficiencies, 4.0% and 7.0%, under 100 and 30 mW cm(-2) illumination, respectively. Finally, the unsealed device is demonstrated to remain above 90% of its initial conversion efficiency after 7 days, showing excellent stability.
ZnO/TiO 2 Core–shell Nanowire Arrays for Enhanced Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Efficiency

Abstract:We present a new method of synthesizing ZnO/TiO2 core–shell nanowire (NW) arrays for the fabrication of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Vertically aligned ZnO NW arrays were obtained on Si substrates, and modified by a TiO2 shell in order to solve the recombination problems via a cost-effective spin-coating method. The structure of the ZnO/TiO2 composite NW arrays was characterized. The experimental results indicate that the TiO2 shell enhances the performance of the DSSCs, through improving the stability of the ZnO NWs and decreasing the recombination of photogenerated electrons on the NW surface. The highest overall conversion efficiency of the cell reaches about 3.0 %.

Abstract:Prohibiting the rapid holes recombination is a key issue for designing highly efficient photoelectrodes for solar water splitting. Here, we propose a strategy incorporating S atoms in the surface shell of ZnO nanoparticles to generate holes trapper for restraining the electron hole recombination. The obtained ZnO@S-doped ZnO core/shell-like nanocomposite exhibits a high photocurrent density of 1.08 mA cm(-2) with conversion efficiency up to 0.74%, 8 times larger than that of pristine ZnO nanoparticles. Comprehensively, the results from experimental and computational aspects reveal that the S dopants substituting the surface O sites narrow the band gap and introduce a mid-gap impurity band, contributing to the enhanced water splitting activity. This design provides some guides for future optimization of ZnO-based photoelectrodes. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The properties of the electron donor-acceptor interface play a crucial role in the photovoltaic performance of the core-shell nanorod array solar cells (NRASCs). In this paper, all-inorganic solid-state ZnO/CdTe and ZnO/CdS/CdTe core-shell NRASCs have been fabricated by a simple low temperature and low cost solution-based process. We investigate the influence of the CdS interfacial layer with different thicknesses on the performance of the solar cells. It is found that inserting such an interfacial layer can significantly improve the short-circuit current density and the open-circuit voltage of the device. The overall power conversion efficiency of the ZnO/CdS/CdTe core-shell NRASC with a 4 nm thick CdS interfacial layer can reach 0.72% under AM 1.5G illumination (100 mW cm (2)), which is three times that of the ZnO/CdTe NRASC. The improvement in the performance is attributed to the designed graded energy band alignment of ZnO/CdS/CdTe and the passivation of surface defects of the ZnO nanorod by the CdS interfacial layer, which can result in the enhanced carrier separation and collection. The result clearly demonstrates that the performance of all-inorganic core-shell photovoltaic devices can be greatly improved with uncomplicated interface engineering.

Abstract:Carrier transportation and efficiency of Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) solar cells are seriously inhibited due to heterojunction interface (HEI) recombination. Herein, we firstly propose a novel HEI doping strategy to address HEI recombination issue by introducing Cu-poor (& Al-rich) CuAlO2 (CAO). Our results indicate that interfacial elements interdiffusion took place between Cu from absorber and Al from CAO during selenization. Then, occupation of Al on the Cu site leads to the absorber shallow bulk inversion from p to n-type, and thereout constructs a desirable homogeneous field passivation (HFP) for HEI. It has not only a superior photo-induced charge carrier transportation function and penalizes the probability of electron-hole recombination but also leads to the superior carrier separation capacity via enlarging depletion region. In addition, CAO itself can bring about a chemical passivation effect owing to its high resistivity. As a result, synergistic passivation effect combining common chemical passivation with novel HFP was realized. Finally, we achieved 9.34% efficiency kesterite device involving chemical and field passivation effects simultaneously despite the relatively not top efficiency. In this regard, HEI doping engineering induced with characteristic Cu-poor (& Al-rich) material for absorber shallow bulk inversion and appreciable passivation effect achieved here shine a new light on the development of kesterite device.

Abstract:Copper–zinc–tin–sulfide (Cu2ZnSnS4 or CZTS) is an important p-type semiconductor material for solar cell applications. A unique architecture for liquid junction solar cell made of ZnO/Al:ZnO/ZnS or ZnSe/CZTS core/shell vertically aligned nanorods array is reported. Over fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass, vertically aligned Al-doped zinc oxide nanorods (VANR) were grown over ZnO seed layer. It was followed by surface transformation of ZnO nanorods to ZnS or ZnSe through solubility constant (Ksp) difference induced anion exchange in a S2− or Se2− solution to produce ZnO/ZnS and ZnO/ZnSe core–shell (CS) structures. Separately, CZTS nanoparticles were synthesized from high temperature arrested precipitation and subsequently used for sensitization of ZnO/ZnS CS-VANR nanostructures. Cu2S and polysulfide were employed as counter-electrode and electrolyte respectively for fabrication of liquid junction solar cells. FE-SEM, HRTEM, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy techniques were employed for microstructural, morphological and compositional characterization of different component materials. The J–V measurements of the solar cell correspond to a several fold higher power conversion efficiency than similar device with thin film multilayer planar configuration involving same amount of materials. The aligned core/shell nanorods configuration offers an increase in the interfacial area by several folds, shorter pathway for charge transport and efficient photon absorption.

Abstract:A Cu2O/ZnS/ZnO core–shell orderly nanoarray transparent p–n junction was prepared using a hydrothermal in situ sulfuration–sputtering method. Compared with Cu2O/ZnO, Cu2O/ZnS/ZnO exhibited a higher transmittance of ∼85%, photovoltaic enhancement by ∼1.2 × 103-fold (a photovoltaic conversion efficiency of ∼1.28%), and stable output during a 6 month cycle. This can be primarily attributed to the in situ dual functional ZnS transition layer, which exhibits an appropriate Fermi level and high quantum yield, thereby efficiently optimizing the carrier equilibrium while sustaining higher transparency. Furthermore, the ZnS/ZnO core–shell nanoarrays with a better carrier transport pathway and increased solar efficiency can optimize the carrier kinetic equilibrium. In addition, the ZnS/ZnO nanoarrays with higher physical stability and in situ ZnS shell with higher chemical stability can efficiently increase the photovoltaic stability.

Manipulation of Zinc Oxide with Zirconium Doping for Efficient Inverted Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:<p>Solution‐processed zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the widely used electron transporting layers (ETLs) for organic solar cells (OSCs). However, low optical transparency along with thickness‐sensitivity of ZnO ETL constrains the improvement of photovoltaic performance and large‐scale fabrication compatibility. To resolve these issues, zirconium (Zr) doping is applied to tailor the optoelectronic and morphological properties of ZnO layer. This approach not only improves light transmittance with the suppressed parasitic absorption, but also provides an optimized surface morphology for enhancing charge extraction property and reducing potential of charge trap‐assisted recombination. By using ZnO:Zr as ETL in inverted device configuration, the maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PM6:Y6:PC<sub>71</sub>BM solar cell devices is up to 17.2%, which makes an enhancement of 9.55% compared to ZnO‐based devices (15.7%). As the thickness of ZnO:Zr ETL increases to ≈60 nm, the presence of the lower parasitic absorption together with uniform surface morphology can help photovoltaic performance maintain above 15%, which is beyond the performance of the pristine ZnO‐based device achieving only 11.9%. Such superiority of ZnO:Zr ETL is also validated by a series of well‐known BHJ systems, where in comparison with the devices based on pristine ZnO ETL, a better photovoltaic performance from ZnO:Zr device can be achieved.</p>

Abstract:Abstract This study explores influence of charge transfer and X-ray absorption characteristics in aluminum (Al) and copper (Cu) co-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures for perovskite solar cell electrodes. Sol-gel technique was employed to synthesize the nanostructures, and their optical and morphological properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed high crystallinity and also single-phase composition of all the samples, particularly up to 5% Al co-doping. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) exhibited the formation of pseudo-hexagonal wurtzite nanostructure and the transition to nanorods at 5% Al co-doping. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy indicated a reduction in the optical band gap of co-doped zinc oxide from 3.11 to 2.9 eV with increasing Al doping. Photoluminescence spectra (PL) exhibited a decrease in peak intensity, suggesting enhanced conductivity in ZnO, also confirmed from I-V measurements. Near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) analysis depicts that charge transfer from Al to oxygen (O) species enhanced the photosensing properties of the nanostructure, which was supported by FESEM micrographs and PL spectra. Furthermore, the study discovered that 5% Al co-doping significantly reduced the density of emission defects (deep-level) in Cu–ZnO nanostructure. These findings highlight the potential of Cu and Al co-doped ZnO materials for perovskite solar cell electrodes, as their improved optical and morphological properties resulting from charge transfer could enhance device performance. The investigation of charge transfer and X-ray absorption characteristics provides valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms and behaviors of the co-doped ZnO nanostructures. However, further research is required to delve into the intricate hybridization resulting from charge transfer and explore the broader impact of co-doping on other properties of the nanostructures, enabling a comprehensive understanding of their potential applications in perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Nowadays, solid-state inorganic-organic hybrid solar cells based on one-dimensional (1D) inorganic semiconducting nanostructures and organic polymers are believed to offer convincing solutions for the realm of next generation solar cells. In this regard, 1D ZnCdS nanowire (NW) arrays were fabricated on transparent conducting substrates through a catalyst free co-evaporation method and their wurtzite structural characteristics, 1D morphological layout and valence state/composition were studied in detail using X-ray diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The existence of deep level traps and optical band gap of ZnCdS NWs were additionally studied using room-temperature cathodoluminescence and UV-vis absorbance measurements. The inorganic-organic hybrid cells were then fabricated using these NWs via spin coating poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) and poly(styrene sulfonate) based polymers. The morphological dissemination of the polymer deposits on NWs were also studied individually by electron microscopy. The solar cell (J-V) characteristics of the fabricated architectures were investigated at room-temperature and as a function of temperature and different intensities of incident light irradiation. The trap energy of the devices was noted to decrease from 68.1 to 40.7eV, suggesting the active role of trap sites that could have originated from the surface defects and other structural disorders across the hybrid heterostructures.

Abstract:We present here the successful fabrication of core-shell constructed CdZnSe@ZnSe colloidal alloy quantum dots with tunable optical properties using a hot-injection method, demonstrating great potential in photovoltaic devices. Upon employment as charge extraction materials in all-inorganic perovskite solar cells, an enhanced power conversion efficiency up to 8.65% has been achieved arising from the boosted charge transfer dynamics.

Abstract:Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) has attracted intensive interest for application in photovoltaic technology due to its excellent semiconductor properties. We report a nanostructured CZTS solar cell which was fabricated by infiltrating of CZTS nanoparticles into CdS coated ZnO nanorod arrays. The well aligned ZnO nanorods facilitate the efficient infiltration of CZTS nanoparticles. A hole transport layer was deposited to facilitate the transport of holes. The nanostructured CZTS solar cell demonstrated a remarkably high short-circuit current density (11.0 mA/cm(2)). Abstract:Among the n-type metal oxide materials used in the planar perovskite solar cells, zinc oxide (ZnO) is a promising candidate to replace titanium dioxide (TiO2) due to its relatively high electron mobility, high transparency, and versatile nanostructures. Here, we present the application of low temperature solution processed ZnO/Al-doped ZnO (AZO) bilayer thin film as electron transport layers (ETLs) in the inverted perovskite solar cells, which provide a stair-case band profile. Experimental results revealed that the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells were significantly increased from 12.25 to 16.07% by employing the AZO thin film as the buffer layer. Meanwhile, the short-circuit current density (Jsc), open-circuit voltage (Voc), and fill factor (FF) were improved to 20.58 mA/cm2, 1.09V, and 71.6%, respectively. The enhancement in performance is attributed to the modified interface in ETL with stair-case band alignment of ZnO/AZO/CH3NH3PbI3, which allows more efficient extraction of photogenerated electrons in the CH3NH3PbI3 active layer. Thus, it is demonstrated that the ZnO/AZO bilayer ETLs would benefit the electron extraction and contribute in enhancing the performance of perovskite solar cells.

ZnO nanocones with high-index {101̄1} facets for enhanced energy conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:ZnO is a promising photoanode material for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) due to its high bulk electron mobility and because different geometrical structures can easily be tailored. Although various strategies have been taken to improve ZnO-based DSC efficiencies, their performances are still far lower than TiO2 counterparts, mainly because low conductivity Zn2+-dye complexes form on the ZnO surfaces. Here, cone-shaped ZnO nanocrystals with exposed reactive O-terminated {10 (1) over tilde1} facets were synthesized and applied in DSC devices. The devices were compared with DSCs made from more commonly used rod-shaped ZnO nanocrystals where {10 (1) over tilde0} facets are predominantly exposed. When cone-shaped ZnO nanocrystals were used, DSCs sensitized with C218, N719, and D205 dyes universally displayed better power conversion efficiency, with the highest photoconversion efficiency of 4.36% observed with the C218 dye. First-principles calculations indicated that the enhanced DSCs performance with ZnO nanocone photoanodes could be attributed to the strength of binding between the dye molecules and reactive O-terminated {10 (1) over tilde1} ZnO facets and that more effective use of dye molecules occurred due to a significantly less dye aggregation on these ZnO surfaces compared to other ZnO facets.

Abstract:A highly (110)- oriented ZnO porous nanosheet framework is designed as the photoanode in photoelectrochemical systems, by virtue of its anisotropic electronic properties. It can be facilely prepared in large scale via a hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses show that the orientation index of the (110) diffraction plane is 3.54, indicating the films possess (110) preferred orientation. Field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) images exhibit that most of the nanosheets stand nearly perpendicularly on the substrate. The {002} lattice planes work just like conducting wires and induce the electrons to transport to the substrate. Chronoamperometry measurement demonstrates an effective electron collection. When the nanostructured photoanode is introduced to dye-sensitized solar cells, a conversion efficiency of 3.7% is obtained. The photoanode also has potential application in the other photoelectrochemical systems, such as photocatalytical splitting of water.

Abstract:The different morphological ZnO micro-nanostructures were prepared by solvothermal method and their photoelectric conversion efficiency applied in dye-sensitised solar cells (DSSCs) were be analysed. The morphologies and crystalline structures of the ZnO nanocrystals grown under different driving forces, which were characterised by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements. The results showed that different additives caused different growing directions for the crystal plane and then formed ZnO micro-nanostructures with different morphologies. The UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectra displayed that nanorod-assembled 3D urchin-like ZnO had the strongest absorbance intensity. When they were used as photo-anodes for DSSCs, the I–V curve showed their photoelectric conversion efficiency enhanced to different degrees. The highest was that of the nanorod-assembled 3D urchin-like ZnO micro-superstructures, which was synthesised under NaBH4 and 25 % concentrated aqueous ammonia reaction system. Its photoelectric conversion efficiency is 2.37 %. Other hand, this simple and controlled method is promising to prepare the low-cost, environmentally friendly and high performance innovative structural materials.
