Abstract:Pd(II)-catalyzed oxidation of terminal olefins to methyl ketones has emerged as an attractive strategy for organic synthesis. Here we report the Pd(II)-catalyzed selective oxidation of olefins using tert-butyl hydroperoxide as the oxidant and 2-(1H-indazol-1-yl)quinoline as the ligand. A wide range of olefins were well tolerated in this reaction system to provide methyl ketones, whereas the presence of Ac2O initiated the oxo-acyloxylation to afford the α-acetoxyacetone products. Isotope labeling studies and active-intermediate-capture experiments were performed to elucidate the underlying selective reaction mechanism. Notably, the generation of α-acetoxyacetone products involves the palladium enolate intermediate while the methyl ketone products were generated through the most commonly proposed alkylperoxide intermediates, followed by 1,2-hydride migration.
Catalytic properties of mesoporous materials supported heteropoly acids for Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclic ketones

Abstract:Three mesoporous molecular sieves loaded silicotungstic acids, named HSiW/SBA-15, HSiW/MCM-41, HSiW/MCM-48, were prepared and characterised by XRD, FT-IR, TEM and SEM. The catalytic performance of the prepared materials for the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclic ketones was carried out in the presence of 30%H2O2 under mild conditions. These loading materials were proved to be efficient and reusable catalysts, they all exhibited excellent catalytic performance for the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclic ketones with 30% H2O2 as oxidant. Many cyclic ketones were efficiently converted to the corresponding lactones with up to 90% conversions and high selectivities under the optimum reaction conditions.Cyclic ketones were efficiently oxidised by mesoporous materials sopported silicotungstic acid to the corresponding lactones with 30%H2O2 as oxidant. All of the catalysts showed promising recyclability in the reactions.

Abstract:Baeyer–Villiger oxidation can synthesize a series of esters or lactones that have essential application value but are difficult to be synthesized by other methods. Cycloketones can be oxidized to lactones using molecular oxygen, peroxy acids, or hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant. Hydrogen peroxide is one of the environmental oxidants. Because of the weak oxidation ability of hydrogen peroxide, Bronsted acids and Lewis acids are used as catalysts to activate hydrogen peroxide or the carbonyl of ketones to increase the nucleophilic performance of hydrogen peroxide. The catalytic mechanisms of Bronsted acids and Lewis acids differ in the Baeyer–Villiger oxidation of cyclohexanone with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant.

Abstract:A tetradentate nitrogen ligand containing a benzimidazole ring and an electron-rich pyridine ring was developed, the resulting manganese complex exhibited good activity in the C-H oxidation of simple alkanes. In particular, cyclic aliphatic alkanes were transformed into ketones in very good yields (up to 89 %) by using environmentally benign H2 O2 as the terminal oxidant. This protocol was also applied successfully in benzylic C-H oxidation, giving the corresponding ketones with very good selectivities. In addition, tertiary C-H bond oxidation of complex molecules by the manganese complex showed potential utility for assembling alcohols with good selectivity in late-stage chemical synthesis.

Abstract:Active transition metal species (Co, Cu, Cr, Ni or Mn) supported on a chemically modified silica gel are used as heterogeneous catalysts in a range of Liquid phase oxidation reactions: alkyl aromatic side chain oxidations, epoxidations of alkenes and Baeyer-Villiger oxidations of linear ketones to esters and cyclic ketones to lactones. The catalyst employs metal centres bound to the silica surface via a hydrophobic spacer chain and is thus chemically robust and has a relatively high loading for a supported reagent (c 0.4mmolg(-1)). The Cr version of the catalyst promotes the oxidation of ethylbenzene to acetophenone in a solvent-free system at a rate of 5.5% h(-1) (>370 turnover h(-1)). It is also active for the oxidation of p-chlorotoluene and p-xylene to p-chlorobenzoic acid and p-toluic acid respectively. Cyclohexene is converted to its oxide at room temperature at a rate of c 28% h(-1) (c 12 turnover h(-1)) using either the Ni or Cu versions of the catalyst. The room temperature Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclohexanone is achieved at a rate of 44% h(-1) (49 turnover h(-1)) using the Ni-containing catalyst. The same material also promotes the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of linear aliphatic ketones and aromatic side chains. All the above systems use either air or molecular oxygen as the oxidant rather than peroxides or peracids. (C) 1999 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:By carefully screening the organoselenium pre‐catalysts and optimizing the reaction conditions, simple dibenzyl diselenide was found to be the best pre‐catalyst for Baeyer–Villiger oxidation of (E)‐α,β‐unsaturated ketones with the green oxidant hydrogen peroxide at room temperature. The organoselenium catalyst used in this reaction could be recycled and reused several times. This new method was suitable not only for methyl unsaturated ketones, but also for alkyl and aryl unsaturated ketones. Therefore, it provided a direct, mild, practical, highly functional group‐tolerant process for the chemoselective preparation of the versatile (E)‐vinyl esters from the readily available (E)‐α,β‐unsaturated ketones. A possible mechanism was also proposed to rationalize the activity of the organoselenium catalyst in the presence of hydrogen peroxide in this Baeyer–Villiger oxidation reaction.

Abstract:Two carboxylic functionalized poly(ionic liquids) and polyoxometalate ionic self-assemblies with tunable amphiphilic and oxidative activity and porous structure were designed and synthesized. They were used as efficient heterogeneous catalysts exhibiting excellent catalytic activity and quite stable reusability in additive–free Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclic ketones, directly using 30% H2O2 solution in liquids–phase. Under optimum conditions, the corresponding lactones were obtained with yields ranging from 59.6 to 90.5%. The unique combination of carboxylic group with polyoxometalate anion, amphiphilic property, and porous structure is revealed to be responsible for their excellent catalytic performances in oxidation.

Abstract:The Baeyer-Villiger oxidation represents a valuable reaction that enables the conversion of ketones into esters or lactones. Here, we present a novel and efficient approach utilizing I-2 as a catalyst for the oxidative rearrangement of cyclobutenones, resulting in the synthesis of furan-2(5H)-one. Notably, this method employs dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a greener oxidant and source of oxygen. The reaction proceeds smoothly with catalytic amounts of iodine, yielding lactones in good yields. Compared to conventional Baeyer-Villiger oxidation reactions that rely on peroxyl acids or hydrogen peroxide, the use of DMSO offers a safer and more versatile alternative.

Abstract:A silica supported cobalt (II) Salen complex catalyst has been successfully employed in the aerobic oxidation of alkyl aromatics at atmospheric pressure in the presence of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). The reaction is particularly selective for the oxidation of the benzylic CH2 group and the major product obtained was ketone. The immobilized catalyst can be easily recovered and reused for at least four reaction cycles without any significant loss of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:The Baeyer–Villiger oxidation (BVO) of ketone and aldehyde can produce ester and formate, which both have wide applications in many areas. In this work, a series of Sn-containing silicates were prepared through the sol-gel process by using structure-directing and crystallizing agents and post-synthetic coordinated modification of binaphthol. Characterizations revealed that loading of (L)-sodium lactate as the crystallizing agent decreased the crystal size of the synthesized catalyst, and there were SnO2 nanoparticles with sizes of 17–19 nm on the catalyst. Furthermore, quite differently from the 3D mesoporous structure of classical Sn-beta zeolites, the synthesized catalysts had a silt-like mesoporous structure. In the catalysis, when cyclic aliphatic ketones were used as the substrate, only BVO-type products and corresponding ring-opening products were obtained. BVO of aliphatic aldehyde produced both an aerobic oxidation product (carboxylic acid) and a BVO-type product. The presented transformation of aromatic aldehyde (benzaldehyde) only gave an aerobic oxidation product (benzoic acid). The post-synthetic coordinating attachment of (S)-binaphthol to the Sn-containing silicate backbone worsened the BVO of aliphatic ketones but improved the BVO of aliphatic aldehyde and the aerobic oxidation of aromatic aldehyde. In addition, this work also developed two new routes for the synthesis of high-value-added 6-hydroxyhexanoic acid and cyclohexylformate under catalytic BVO conditions.

Direct Synthesis of Bifunctionalized Hexagonal Mesoporous Silicas and Its Catalytic Performance for Aerobic Oxidation of Cyclohexane

Abstract:According to the characteristics of the cyclohexane oxidation reaction a series of bifunctionalized hexagonal mesoporous silicas, CoPh-HMS, were designed and successfully synthesized by a one-step co-condensation route. The results of small-angle XRD, TEM, and N-2 adsorption-desorption measurements showed that the resultant materials had well-ordered mesoscopic structures. Co2+ ions were incorporated into the frameworks in tetrahedral coordination along with phenyl groups immobilized on the surface, confirmed by a careful spectroscopic (FT-IR, UV-visible, and Si-29 MAS NMR) study. The surfaces of the materials were proved to be more hydrophobic with higher Ph loading, and the largest water droplet contact angle is tip to 110.50 degrees. These materials were applied in the liquid-phase oxidation of cyclohexane with molecular oxygen as oxidant and tert-butyl hydroperoxide as initiator Linder solvent-free conditions. High activity could be obtained with these bifunctionalized catalysts being used. The modification effect of phenyl groups played an important role in the activity enhancement.
Baeyer-Villiger Oxidation of Cyclohexanone to Caprolactone over Highly Efficient MgO/SnO2 Catalyst Using H2O2 As Oxidant

Abstract:A series of Mg-based catalysts were prepared by a coprecipitation method and characterized by XRD, BET, and TG-DTA. As compared with other composite catalysts, including MgO/Al2O3, MgO/La2O3, MgO/TiO2, MgO/ZnO and MgO/ZrO2, MgO/SnO2 showed the most efficient catalytic performance in the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclohexanone to c-caprolactone with aqueous hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant. Under optimal reaction conditions, the as-prepared MgO/SnO2 catalyst after being calcined at 600 V with the Mg/Sn molar ratio of 7 : 3 presented an excellent performance with the cyclohexanone conversion of 90.5% and the caprolactone selectivity of 100%.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of olefins to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones under mild reaction conditions has attracted considerable interest, since alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones can serve as synthetic precursors for various downstream chemical products. The major inherent challenges with this chemical oxidation are chemo- and regio-selectivity as well as environmental concerns, i.e. catalyst recycle, safety and cost. Using atmospheric oxygen as an environmentally friendly oxidant, we found that a metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed with Mn and a tetrazolate ligand (CPF-5) showed good activity and selectivity for the allylic oxidation of olefins to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones. Under the optimized conditions, we could achieve 98% conversion of cyclohexene and 87% selectivity toward cyclohexanone. The combination of a substoichiometric amount of TBHP (tert-butylhydroperoxide) and oxygen not only provides a cost effective oxidation system but significantly enhances the selectivity to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones, outperforming most reported oxidation methods. This catalytic system is heterogeneous in nature, and CPF-5 could be reused at least five times without a significant decrease in its catalytic activity and selectivity.
Hydroxyl Radical Mediated Heterogeneous Photocatalytic Baeyer‐Villiger Oxidation over Covalent Triazine/Heptazine‐Based Frameworks

Abstract:The Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of ketones to the corresponding lactones/esters is a classic and essential reaction in the chemical industry. However, this oxidation process has not yet been achieved in ambient conditions with the aid of oxygen and heterogeneous photocatalysts. In this study, we developed an organic photocatalytic system using covalent triazine/heptazine-based frameworks (CTF-TB/CHF-TB) to enable the B-V oxidation reaction under mild conditions through a cascade reaction pathway. Experimental data and theoretical calculations showed that heptazine/triazine units can "chelate" and decompose the in situ generated H2O2 into hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Compared to conventional methods that primarily involve metal-activated benzaldehyde at elevated temperatures (e.g., 60 oC), the •OH generated in our study can readily cleave the C-H bond of benzaldehyde, forming an active intermediate that drives subsequent sequential processes: O2→H2O2→•OH→Ph-CO•→Ph-COOO•. By employing this photocatalytic process, a yield of 91% and a selectivity of over 99 % were obtained in the oxidation of cyclohexanone to caprolactone at room temperature. This performance is comparable to the state-of-the-art catalysts, and our CHF-TB catalyst demonstrates impressive reusability, maintaining a high yield after 5 consecutive runs. This work presents a straightforward approach for C-H cleavage by organocatalysts to produce ε-caprolactone in a mild manner by Baeyer-Villiger oxidation.

Abstract:An efficient and versatile method for the enantioselective epoxidation of both tertiary allylic and homoallylic alcohols catalyzed by Hf(IV)-bishydroxamic acid (BHA) complexes is described. Asymmetric epoxidation, kinetic resolution, and desymmetrization have been developed, demonstrating the flexible nature of the Hf(IV)-BHA system. This is the first report in which these substrates were obtained with enantioselectivities of up to 99%.
