Abstract:China has the largest population of patients with dementia in the world, imposing a heavy burden on the public and health care systems. More than 100 epidemiological studies on dementia have been done in China, but the estimates of the prevalence and incidence remain inconsistent because of the use of different sampling methods. Despite improved access to health services, inadequate diagnosis and management for dementia is still common, particularly in rural areas. The Chinese Government issued a new policy to increase care facilities for citizens older than 65 years, but most patients with dementia still receive care at home. Western medicines for dementia symptoms are widely used in China, but many patients choose Chinese medicines even though they have little evidence supporting efficacy. The number of clinical trials of Chinese and western medicines has substantially increased as a result of progress in research on new antidementia drugs but international multicentre studies are few in number. Efforts are needed to establish a national system of dementia care enhance training in dementia for health professionals, and develop global collaborations to prevent and cure this disease.

Abstract:Dementia is a major cause of disability and has immense cost implications for the individual suffering from the condition, family caregivers and society. Given the high prevalence of dementia in China with its enormous and rapidly expanding population of elderly adults, it is necessary to develop and test approaches to the care for patients with this disorder. The need is especially great in rural China where access to mental healthcare is limited, with the task made more complex by social and economic reforms over the last 30 years that have transformed the Chinese family support system, family values and health delivery systems. Evidence-based collaborative care models for dementia, depression and other chronic diseases that have been developed in some Western countries serve as a basis for discussion of innovative approaches in the management of dementia in rural China, with particular focus on its implementation in the primary care system.

Abstract:In 2022, multiple research milestones have occurred in the field of dementia. Therapeutics went through a fundamental transition, with amyloid-β (Aβ) targeted drugs gradually moving from clinical trials into real-world application. Encouraging findings on biomarkers and risk factors also marked the ongoing shift towards precise diagnosis and early prevention. We believe that this progress has been achieved by given consideration to previously established notions.

Abstract:Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of most common neurodegenerative diseases,which gradually begins and develops after 65 years old,presenting as progressive and irreversible memory loss and other cognitive decline,and finally causes dementia and disability.Therefore,early diagnosis,timely treatment and effective prevention of AD have been become important clinical and scientific problems.During the period of Twelfth Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development,our team have engaged in AD diagnosis and treatment for a long time and carried out studies in the field of pathogenesis,epidemiology,screening of risk factors,neuropsychological tests,imaging,biomarkers and early intervention of AD.This paper has summarized these research achievements.

Research hotspots and nursing inspiration in research of older adults with subjective cognitive decline from 2003 to 2023: A bibliometric analysis

Abstract:Objectives: There has been a significant increase in subjective cognitive decline (SCD) studies in older adults over the years. A bibliometric analysis was conducted to demonstrate the current hotspots and emerging trends in SCD research in older adults and provide references for further research in this field. Methods: The study conducted a bibliometric analysis based on co-citation analysis. From the Web of Science Core Collection database, this study obtained 1,436 manuscripts regarding SCD in older adults published from 2003 to 2023. Software CiteSpace was used to analyse the results for countries, institutions, authors, journals, keywords, top-cited papers, and burst citations scientifically and intuitively. Results: Our result showed an overall upward trend in the volume of publications on SCD in the elderly population, suggesting that the study of SCD in older adults has attracted the attention of researchers. The United States dominates this research field, followed by China and France. The top three institutions were the University of California System, Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicale (Inserm), and UDICE-French Research Universities. Frank Jessen, Han Ying, and Kathryn Ellis were the top three researchers. The top three cited journals were Neurology, Alzheimers & Dementia, and Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. The keywords clustering were "depression", "functional connectivity", "cognitive reserve", "cognitive function", "physical activity", "recommendations", "dementia prevention", " behavioral disorders", "primary care", "early diagnosis", and "community-based study". Keywords with the highest citation bursts include "physical activity", "framework", "preclinical Alzheimer's disease", "future dementia", and "late life depression". Conclusions: Parallel to the growth trend, the range of research scopes and topics is expanding steadily, focusing on early screening and prevention, negative emotion, and symptom management, broadening researchers' perspectives, which can provide reference and guidance for nursing researchers to conduct research.

Abstract:The history of post-operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is nearly 60 years, but we still have no idea about its exactly pathogenesis and mechanisms. The clinical practicers are still lack of the effective prevention and treatment methods. Since POCD may develop into dementia, and correlate with Alzheimer’s disease, its current research are focused on the pathogenesis studying from the neuroinflammation impairment, especially the roles of general anesthesia, surgeries, patients ages, and establish the accurate and rational evaluation and prevention systems.

Abstract:Agitation is prevalent among patients with dementia during the disease progression,which has great impact on patients as well as on caregivers.Due to the limit treatment efficacy and adverse effects of pharmacological treatment,nonpharmacological interventions are recommended as the first line treatment for agitation.This article summarized the research progress of nonpharmacological interventions including environment modification,activity arrangement,sensory stimulation,cognitive and psychological stimulation,social and emotional support and daily care,which aims to provide references and guidance for caregivers to cope with agitation.

At present, diabetes combined with cognitive impairment is gradually becoming a hot issue of worldwide concern. In this paper, the pathogenesis of diabetes combined with cognitive dysfunction is described from the following aspects: metabolic abnormalities, cerebrovascular disease, inflammatory mediators, neurotrophic factor deficiency, blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier dysfunction, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis hyperfunction, and activation of renin-angiotensin system.

Abstract:The rapid aging of the Chinese population has spurred interest in research about the cause and prevention of dementia and its precursor, mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This review summarizes the last decade of research in China about MCI. Extensive research about the epidemiology, neuropsychological characteristics, diagnosis, genetic etiology, neuroimaging and electrophysiological changes, and treatment of MCI has provided some new insights but few breakthroughs. Further advances in the prevention and treatment of MCI will require a greater emphasis on multi-disciplinary prospective studies with large, representative samples that use standardized methods to assess and monitor changes in cognitive functioning over time.

Abstract:Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of providing person-centered care for our vulnerable populations across the globe. This symposium focuses on improving care for persons with cognitive impairment and dementia in various care settings. The first study explored dyadic experiences of living with early-onset dementia pre and during COVID-19 in China through a person-centered care lens. The second concept analysis presented four interrelated dimensions of Asian American caregiver support, including individual, family, community, and professional health system. The third study investigated undergraduate nursing students’ attitudes toward pursuing jobs of providing care for older adults with dementia in rapidly-aging urban areas in China and its associated factors. The fourth study examined the impact of social isolation on cognitive function and Quality of Life among acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients in China. The last study explored an association between perceived control and cognitive function among acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients in China. The last two studies suggested that perceived control and social isolation may be potential targets in cognitive interventions for AIS patients. This symposium presents the understanding of dementia caregiver support, the empirical evidence of living with dementia, the attitudes towards dementia care among the next generation of nursing workforce, and the impact of social factors on cognitive functions longitudinally. The presenters emphasize the importance of improving care in long-term care and acute care settings. There is a need to design person and family-centered care to improve health and wellbeing of persons with cognitive impairment.

Abstract:Semantic dementia is a kind of neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by prominent semantic impairments and anterior temporal lobe atrophy. Since 2010, more studies have devoted to this rare disorder, revealing that it is more complex than we think. Clinical advances include more specific findings of semantic impairments and other higher order cognitive deficits. Neuroimaging techniques can help revealing the different brain networks affected (both structurally and functionally) in this condition. Pathological and genetic studies have also found more complex situations of semantic dementia, which might explain the huge variance existing in semantic dementia. Moreover, the current diagnosis criteria mainly focus on semantic dementia's classical prototype. We further delineated the features of three subtypes of semantic dementia based on atrophy lateralization with three severity stages. In a broader background, as a part of the continuum of neurodegenerative disorders, semantic dementia is commonly compared with other resembling conditions. Therefore, we summarized the differential diagnosis between semantic dementia and them. Finally, we introduced the challenges and achievements of its diagnosis, treatment, care and cross cultural comparison. By providing a comprehensive picture of semantic dementia on different aspects of advances, we hope to deepen the understanding of semantic dementia and promote more inspirations on both clinical and theoretical studies about it.

Abstract:Age-related cognitive decline and dementia are significant manifestations of brain aging. As the elderly population grows rapidly, the health and socio-economic impacts of cognitive dysfunction have become increasingly significant. Although clinical treatment of dementia has faced considerable challenges over the past few decades, with limited breakthroughs in slowing its progression, there has been substantial progress in understanding the molecular mechanisms and hallmarks of age-related dementia (ARD). This progress brings new hope for the intervention and treatment of this disease. In this review, we categorize the latest findings in ARD biomarkers into four stages based on disease progression: healthy brain, pre-clinical, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia. We then systematically summarize the most promising therapeutic approaches to prevent or slow ARD at four levels: genome and epigenome, organelle, cell, and organ and organism. We emphasize the importance of early prevention and detection, along with the implementation of combined treatments as multimodal intervention strategies, to address brain aging and ARD in the future.

Abstract:Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a kind of central nervous system degenerative disease with higher incidence,which has been paid increasing attention.The pathogenesis is not yet clear though it has been studied a lot.The existing theories focused on amyloid β-protein (Aβ) deposit,hyperphosphorylation of tau and cholinergic neuronal loss.There is mainly symptomatic treatment which cannot reverse disease course.So early diagnosis is particularly important for prevention and treatment of AD.The article will review recent advances in the studies of early diagnosis of AD.It may help accurately diagnose the process from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to early AD and give advice on prevention and treatment.
