Abstract:Carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs) are widely utilized in flexible and wearable electronics due to their outstanding electrical and mechanical properties. However, the spinning process of CNTFs has limited the CNTs from exposure, leading to an ultralow usage efficiency of individual CNTs. Here, we propose an electrochemical expansion strategy of a single CNTF at the liquid-air interface, forming a macroscopic spindle-shaped CNTF (SS-CNTF) with an enlarged volume of up to 5000-fold upon the spindle. The obtained spindle-shaped structure endows CNTF with a high specific surface area together with excellent conductivity and good mechanical properties. Therefore, the SS-CNTF-based devices exhibit outstanding performances both in energy storage (electrical double-layer supercapacitor, energy density: 11.22 Wh kg-1, power density: 203.9 kW kg-1) and electrochemical sensing (ascorbic acid: 1.26 μA μM-1 cm-2; dopamine: 103.91 μA μM-1 cm-2; uric acid: 11.53 μA μM-1 cm-2). The novel architecture of SS-CNTF prepared by one-step electrochemical expansion at the liquid-air interface enabled its high performance in multiple applications, providing new insight into the development of CNTF-based devices.

Abstract:The emerging fiber‐shaped supercapacitors (FSSs) have motivated tremendous research interest in energy storage devices. However, challenges still exist in the pursuit of combination of excellent electrochemical performance and mechanical stretchability. Here, a core‐sheath asymmetric FSS is first made by wrapping gel electrolyte coated carbon nanotube (CNT)@MnO2 core fiber with CNT@PPy composite film. Then a stretchable helical structure is formed by over‐twisting the FSS. The resulted stretchable asymmetric FSS exhibits a specific capacitance of 60.435 mF cm−2 at the scan rate of 10 mV s−1 and the capacitance performance is well maintained during repeated stretching to 20% strain. Furthermore, a high energy density of 18.88 μW h cm−2 is achieved for the stretchable FSS due to its high specific capacitance and extended potential window of 1.5 V.

Abstract:A shape-memory, fiber-shaped supercapacitor is developed by winding aligned carbon nanotube sheets on a shape-memory polyurethane substrate. Despite its flexibility and stretchability, the deformed shapes under bending and stretching can be "frozen" as expected and recovered to the original state when required. Its electrochemical performances are well-maintained during deformation, at the deformed state and after the recovery.

Abstract:Fiber-shaped supercapacitors (FSCs), owing to their high-power density and feasibility to be integrated into woven clothes, have drawn tremendous attentions as a key device for flexible energy storage. However, how to store more energy while withstanding various types of mechanical deformation is still a challenge for FSCs. Here, based on a magnetron sputtering method, different pseudocapacitive materials are conformally coated on self-supported carbon nanotube aligned films. This fabrication approach enables a stretchable, asymmetric, coaxial fiber-shaped supercapacitors with high performance. The asymmetric electrode configuration that consists of CNT@NiO@MnOx cathode and CNT@Fe2O3 anode successfully extends the FSC’s electrochemical window to 1.8 V in an aqueous electrolyte. As a result, a high specific capacitance of 10.4 F·cm−3 is achieved at a current density of 30 mA·cm−3 corresponding to a high energy density of 4.7 mWh·cm−3. The mechanical stability of the stretchable FSC is demonstrated with a sustainable performance under strains up to 75% and a capacitance retention of 95% after 2,000 cycles under 75% strain.

Abstract:The emergence of fiber-shaped supercapacitors (FSSs) has led to a revolution in portable and wearable electronic devices. However, obtaining high energy density FSSs for practical applications is still a key challenge. This article exhibits a facile and effective approach to directly grow well-aligned three-dimensional vanadium nitride (VN) nanowire arrays (NWAs) on carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber with an ultrahigh specific capacitance of 715 mF/cm2 in a three-electrode system. Benefiting from their intriguing structural features, we successfully fabricated a prototype asymmetric coaxial FSS (ACFSS) with a maximum operating voltage of 1.8 V. From core to shell, this ACFSS consists of a CNT fiber core coated with VN@C NWAs as the negative electrode, Na2SO4 poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as the solid electrolyte, and MnO2/conducting polymer/CNT sheets as the positive electrode. The novel coaxial architecture not only fully enables utilization of the effective surface area and decreases the contact resistance between the two electrodes but also, more importantly, provides a short pathway for the ultrafast transport of axial electrons and ions. The electrochemical results show that the optimized ACFSS exhibits a remarkable specific capacitance of 213.5 mF/cm2 and an exceptional energy density of 96.07 μWh/cm2, the highest areal capacitance and areal energy density yet reported in FSSs. Furthermore, the device possesses excellent flexibility in that its capacitance retention reaches 96.8% after bending 5000 times, which further allows it to be woven into flexible electronic clothes with conventional weaving techniques. Therefore, the asymmetric coaxial architectural design allows new opportunities to fabricate high-performance flexible FSSs for future portable and wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:A fiber-shaped supercapacitor that can be stretched over 400% is developed by using two aligned carbon nanotube/poly aniline composite sheets as electrodes. A high specific capacitance of approximately 79.4 F g(-1) is well maintained after stretching at a strain of 300% for 5000 cycles or 100.8 F g(-1) after bending for 5000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g(-1). In particular, the high specific capacitance is maintained by 95.8% at a stretching speed as high as 30 mm s(-1).

Abstract:Fiber-shaped supercapacitors (FSSs) are identified as promising facilities in flexible and wearable energy storage fields. In this study, an electrode with excellent formability was accomplished by depositing polypyrrole on highly aligned discontinuous carbon fiber (CF/PPy). For the FSS with core-sheath structure, CF/PPy fiber was the core electrode, LiCl/PVA was the electrolyte, and carbon nanotube/MnO2 (CNT/MnO2) film was the opposite electrode. The charge of core and opposite electrodes was paired by adjusting the electrochemical reaction times of MnO2 and PPy. The obtained FSS had an areal capacitance of 66.27 mF cm(-2) (lineal capacitance of 13.52 mF cm(-1) and volumetric capacitance of 4.08 F cm(-3)) and a broadened potential window of 1.6 V, which resulted in a maximum energy density of 23.56 mu Wh cm(-2). The cycling stability was evaluated by charge-discharge test, and it retained 83% of its initial capacitance after 5000 cycles. Furthermore, the FSS showed exceptional flexibility and it retained above 90% of its capacitance after 200 repeated bending tests, illustrating excellent mechanical stability.

Abstract:Stretchable fiber-shaped supercapacitors have been fabricated by attaching active materials to elastic polymeric substrates. Here, we report a substrate-free, self-stretchable carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn supercapacitor utilizing the helical loop structure incorporated into the CNT yarns. Our helical CNT yarn supercapacitors can work stably under many extreme deformation conditions such as super-elongation (tensile strain up to 150%), arbitrary shape change (entangling), and high frequency stretching (up to 10Hz over 10000 cycles). By designing and manufacturing particular yarn structures as described here, fiber-shaped supercapacitors with unprecedented properties and high performance could be developed, which have potential applications in portable, wearable, and body-integrated energy storage devices.

Abstract:Fiber-shaped supercapacitors with improved specific capacitance and high rate capability are a promising candidate as power supply for smart textiles. However, the synergistic interaction between conductive filaments and active nanomaterials remains a crucial challenge, especially when hydrothermal or electrochemical deposition is used to produce a core (fiber)-shell (active materials) fibrous structure. On the other hand, although 2D pseudocapacitive materials, e.g., Ti3C2Tx(MXene), have demonstrated high volumetric capacitance, high electrical conductivity, and hydrophilic characteristics, MXene-based electrodes normally suffer from poor rate capability owing to the sheet restacking especially when the loading level is high and solid-state gel is used as electrolyte. Herein, by hosting MXene nanosheets (Ti3C2Tx) in the corridor of a scrolled carbon nanotube (CNT) scaffold, a MXene/CNT fiber with helical structure is successfully fabricated. These features offer open spaces for rapid ion diffusion and guarantee fast electron transport. The solid-state supercapacitor based on such hybrid fibers with gel electrolyte coating exhibits a volumetric capacitance of 22.7 F cm(-3) at 0.1 A cm(-3) with capacitance retention of 84% at current density of 1.0 A cm(-3) (19.1 F cm(-3)), improved volumetric energy density of 2.55 mWh cm(-3) at the power density of 45.9 mW cm(-3), and excellent mechanical robustness.

Abstract:A new type of ternary carbon nanotube fiber (CNF)/three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/polyaniline (PANI) electrodes with a double core-sheathed architecture composed of CNF/CNTs and CNTs/PANI was fabricated via low-potential electrophoretic deposition of CNTs and subsequent electrochemical polymerization of PANI on the CNF surface. The resulting all-solid-state supercapacitor possesses a high specific capacitance of 67.31 mF cm(-2) at the current density of 0.5 mA cm(-2) and only a loss as less as 10% of its initial specific capacitance after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. Furthermore, it is capable of withstanding different bending deformations, and can maintain 99.8% capacitance, even after experiencing the bending of 180 degrees for 500 times, which manifests a significant application potential in the field of flexible electronic devices. Abstract:A stretchable carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber based wire-shaped supercapacitor is fabricated using a prestraining-then-buckling approach. At tensile strains from 0% to 100% or after 20 mechanical stretching-releasing cycles with maximum strain of 100%, the electrochemical properties are not reduced but rather somewhat improved. This may have implications for the integration of wire-shaped supercapacitors with wearable, miniaturized, and portable electronic devices.

Abstract:Manganese oxide (MnO2) has long been investigated as a pseudo-capacitive material for fabricating fiber-shaped supercapacitors but its poor electrical conductivity and its brittleness are clear drawbacks. Here we electrochemically insert nanostructured MnO2 domains into continuously interconnected carbon nanotube (CNT) networks, thus imparting both electrical conductivity and mechanical durability to MnO2. In particular, we synthesize a fiber-shaped coaxial electrode with a nickel fiber as the current collector (Ni/CNT/MnO2); the thickness of the CNT/MnO2 hybrid nanostructured shell is approximately 150 μm and the electrode displays specific capacitances of 231 mF cm−1. When assembling symmetric devices featuring Ni/CNT/MnO2 coaxial electrodes as cathode and anode together with a 1.0 M Na2SO4 aqueous solution as electrolyte, we find energy densities of 10.97 μWh cm−1. These values indicate that our hybrid systems have clear potential as wearable energy storage and harvesting devices.

Abstract:Emerging fiber-shaped supercapacitors have been considered as promising new-state energy storage devices for next-generation wearable electronics. However, the limited energy densities arising from the small specific capacitance and low operating voltage severely restrict their practical application. Here, we develop a facile and effective method to directly grow dandelion-like molybdenum-nickel-cobalt ternary oxide (MNCO) nanowire arrays (NWAs) on carbon nanotube fiber (CNTF) with a high specific capacitance of 490.7 F cm(-3) (1840 mF cm(-2)) at a current density of 1 mA cm(-2). Benefiting from the three-dimensional nanostructure, high conductivity and excellent pseudocapacitance properties, we successfully fabricate a fiber-shaped asymmetric supercapacitor (FASC) with a maximum operating voltage of 1.6 V, which is assembled by twisting a MNCO/CNTF positive electrode and thin carbon-coated VN NWAs on CNTF negative electrode together with KOH/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as the gel electrolyte. The optimized FASC delivers a remarkable specific capacitance of 62.3 F cm(-3) (233.7 mF cm(-2)) and an exceeding energy density of 22.2 mW h cm(-3) (83.1 mW h cm(-2)). Additionally, it exhibits outstanding flexibility with capacitance retention maintained at 90.2% after bending 3500 times. Thus, the high performance MNCO/CNTF electrode opens a new avenue to fabricate high-performance FASCs for next-generation wearable energy storage devices.

Abstract:An ultra-flexible carbon nanotube paper (CNP) was achieved by thermo-crosslinking reaction between carbon nanotubes via high temperature annealing to enhance mechanical property, which was indicated from the tensile test, Raman spectra and conductivity measurement. Based on the mechanical enhanced CNP, a sandwich structure binder free, separator free and encapsulation layer free flexible solid state CNP/Co3O4 nanowire supercapacitor was proposed that could be executed in various external mechanical conditions. The high specific capacitance of device was 345.8 F g−1, when current density was 0.15 A g−1, and its good cycling stability after 5000 cycles kept about 75.9% of the initial capacitance. For various external mechanical conditions, such as bending, pressing, folding and tearing, the capacitance retention is 74.9%–81.3%. Proof-of-concept of the multi-shape survived supercapacitor presents a strategy for designing a novel electrochemical device that could resist harsh external mechanical conditions in future application fields required the safety of a power supply system.
Amphiphilic Core-Sheath Structured Composite Fiber for Comprehensively Performed Supercapacitor

Abstract:As an important branch of fiber-shaped energy storage devices, the fiber-shaped supercapacitor has been widely studied recently. However, it remains challenging to simultaneously achieve fast electron transport and excellent ion accessibility in one single fiber electrode of the fibershaped supercapacitor. Herein, a novel family of amphiphilic core-sheath structured carbon nanotube composite fibers has been developed and applied to the fiber-shaped supercapacitor to address the above challenge. The polyaniline-modified hydrophilic sheath of the composite fiber electrode effectively enhanced the electrochemical property via advancing ion accessibility, while Au-deposited hydrophobic core demonstrated improved electrical conductivity by fast electron supply. On the basis of a synergistic effect, a remarkable specific capacitance of 324 F cm −3 at 0.5 A cm −3 and greatly enhanced rate performance were achieved, i.e., a 79% retention (256 F cm −3 ) at 50 A cm −3 . The obtained fiber-shaped supercapacitor finally displayed remarkable energy and power densities of 7.2 mW h cm −3 and 10 W cm −3 , respectively. The strategy developed herein also presents a general pathway towards novel fiber electrodes for high-performance wearable devices.

Abstract:Fiber-based supercapacitors (FSCs) are new members of the energy storage family. They present excellent flexibility and have promising applications in lightweight, flexible, and wearable devices. One of the existing challenges of FSCs is enhancing their energy density while retaining the flexibility. We developed a facile and cost-effective method to fabricate a highly capacitive positive electrode based on hierarchical ferric-cobalt-nickel ternary oxide nanowire arrays/graphene fibers and a negative electrode based on polyaniline-derived carbon nanorods/graphene fibers. The elegant microstructures and excellent electrochemical performances of both electrodes enabled us to construct a highperformance flexible asymmetric graphene fiber-based supercapacitor device with an operating voltage of 1.4 V, a specific capacitance up to 61.58 mF·cm–2, and an energy density reaching 16.76 μW·h·cm–2. Moreover, the optimal device presents an outstanding cycling stability with 87.5% initial capacitance retention after 8,000 cycles, and an excellent flexibility with a capacitance retention of 90.9% after 4,000 cycles of repetitive bending.

Abstract:An aligned carbon nanotube/MoS2 nanosheet hybrid fiber with remarkable electrochemical properties is synthesized. It is used to fabricate flexible fibrous supercapacitors and lithium ion batteries with high specific capacitances and high specific capacities, respectively.
