Abstract:A new type of ternary carbon nanotube fiber (CNF)/three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/polyaniline (PANI) electrodes with a double core-sheathed architecture composed of CNF/CNTs and CNTs/PANI was fabricated via low-potential electrophoretic deposition of CNTs and subsequent electrochemical polymerization of PANI on the CNF surface. The resulting all-solid-state supercapacitor possesses a high specific capacitance of 67.31 mF cm(-2) at the current density of 0.5 mA cm(-2) and only a loss as less as 10% of its initial specific capacitance after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. Furthermore, it is capable of withstanding different bending deformations, and can maintain 99.8% capacitance, even after experiencing the bending of 180 degrees for 500 times, which manifests a significant application potential in the field of flexible electronic devices. Abstract:Solid-state supercapacitors (SSCs) are under intensive study during recent years; rational design of the electrode structure and device configuration is essential to bring high performance and enable flexibility. Here, we designed a mutually intercalated composite structure consisting of pseudo-polymer (polyaniline, PANI), graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), in various forms such as planar films or helical fibers. In the prepared PANI/GO/CNT composite films, PANI and GO were uniformly embedded among stacked CNT networks resulting in a synergistic effect from all components; as a result, the film with tunable PANI loading exhibited a specific capacitance of 729.3 F/g (510.5 mF/cm(2)) at 1 A/g in three-electrode configuration, and symmetric SSCs made by these films showed stable performance upon large-degree bending for 500 cycles. The composite film was further over-twisted into a helical fiber and constructed to fiber-shaped SSCs, which could work stably at elongations as much as 80%. Our polymer/carbon nanostructure composite electrodes that can work under different forms (films or fibers) have potential applications as flexible, stretchable and wearable energy storage devices and textiles.
High performance solid-state flexible supercapacitor based on Fe3O4/carbon nanotube/polyaniline ternary films

Abstract:A novel flexible nanoarchitecture was fabricated via the facile electropolymerization of a polyaniline (PANI) network on Fe3O4 particles grown axially on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of a CNT film for supercapacitor electrode applications. The PANI chains serve as a protective shell to improve the structural stability of the Fe3O4 particles. The resulting supercapacitor exhibits a high specific energy density of 28.0 W h kg−1, high specific power density of 5.3 kW kg−1 and specific capacitance of 201 F g−1 at a scan rate of 20 mV s−1, surpassing the performances observed for many recently reported flexible supercapacitors. Furthermore, the CNT film-Fe3O4-PANI supercapacitor demonstrates excellent cyclic stability with only a 3.6% loss of its initial specific capacitance after 10 000 charge–discharge cycles. These results suggest that the CNT film-Fe3O4-PANI composite is very promising for next generation high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Smart and flexible supercapacitors are of ever increasing importance for energy-storage devices. Herein, a simple and effective strategy to make a supercapacitor in a "flexible" and "electrochromic" way was based on the direct and convenient immobilization of a polyaniline (PANI) hydrogel onto a porous carbon nanotube (CNT) film. The resultant symmetric all-solid-state supercapacitor showed a favorable specific capacitance of 315 F g(-1) and a relatively high cycling stability (92% capacitance retention after 1500 cycles). The bending test indicated that the obtained supercapacitor was flexible and its performance was only decreased by less than 7.0% after 150 bending cycles with a bending angle of 180 degrees. Furthermore, the supercapacitor displayed a rapid and reversible chromatic transition between different working stages, and its level of stored energy could be quickly determined by the naked eye in a predictable and noticeable manner. This work may open a simple and convenient avenue for the fabrication of smart, flexible and all-solid-state supercapacitors.

Abstract:Flexible fiber-shaped supercapacitors have great potential in wearable electronic devices. Here, we fabricate CNT-PPy composite films by an electrochemical deposition method from macroscopic CNT films. The composite films are transformed into flexible fibers with ultralow density by drawing through several diamond wire-drawing dies. The CNT-PPy fibers have outstanding electrochemical properties with a high specific capacitance of 302 F g(-1) in 1 M H2SO4 liquid electrolyte. Flexible, stretchable, all-solid-state, fiber-shaped supercapacitors are then fabricated from the CNT-PPy fibers using H3PO4-poly(vinyl alcohol) as gel electrolyte. The supercapacitor has a high specific capacitance of 69 F g(-1), a high power density and an energy density of 3.8 kW kg(-1) and 3.6 W h kg(-1), respectively. The fiber-shaped supercapacitor also exhibits high stability and reliability under static and dynamic stretching, and also in a wide temperature range from -27 degrees C to 61 degrees C.

Abstract:An ultra-flexible carbon nanotube paper (CNP) was achieved by thermo-crosslinking reaction between carbon nanotubes via high temperature annealing to enhance mechanical property, which was indicated from the tensile test, Raman spectra and conductivity measurement. Based on the mechanical enhanced CNP, a sandwich structure binder free, separator free and encapsulation layer free flexible solid state CNP/Co3O4 nanowire supercapacitor was proposed that could be executed in various external mechanical conditions. The high specific capacitance of device was 345.8 F g−1, when current density was 0.15 A g−1, and its good cycling stability after 5000 cycles kept about 75.9% of the initial capacitance. For various external mechanical conditions, such as bending, pressing, folding and tearing, the capacitance retention is 74.9%–81.3%. Proof-of-concept of the multi-shape survived supercapacitor presents a strategy for designing a novel electrochemical device that could resist harsh external mechanical conditions in future application fields required the safety of a power supply system.

Abstract:Composite films of chemically converted graphene (CCG) and polyaniline nanofibers (PANI-NFs) were prepared by vacuum filtration the mixed dispersions of both components. The composite film has a layered structure, and PANI-NFs are sandwiched between CCG layers. Furthermore, it is mechanically stable and has a high flexibility; thus, it can be bent into large angles or be shaped into various desired structures. The conductivity of the composite film containing 44% CCG (5.5 x 10(2) S m(-1)) is about 10 times that of a PANI-NF film. Supercapacitor devices based on this conductive flexible composite film showed large electrochemical capacitance (210 F g(-1)) at a discharge rate of 0.3 A g(-1). They also exhibited greatly improved electrochemical stability and rate performances.

Abstract:Highly dispersed polypyrrole nanowires are decorated on reduced graphene oxide sheets using a facile in situ synthesis route. The prepared composites exhibit high dispersibility, large effective surface area, and high electric conductivity. All-solid-state flexible supercapacitors are assembled based on the prepared composites, which show excellent electrochemical performances with a specific capacitance of 434.7 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1). The as-fabricated supercapacitor also exhibits excellent cycling stability (88.1% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles) and exceptional mechanical flexibility. In addition, outstanding power and energy densities were obtained, demonstrating the significant potential of prepared material for flexible and portable energy storage devices.

Abstract:Flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors based on graphene fibers are demonstrated in this study. Surface-deposited oxide nanoparticles are used as pseudo-capacitor electrodes to achieve high capacitance. This supercapacitor electrode has an areal capacitance of 42 mF cm(-2), which is comparable to the capacitance for fiber-based supercapacitors reported to date. During the bending and cycling of the fiber-based supercapacitor, the stability could be maintained without sacrificing the electrochemical performance, which provides a novel and simple way to develop flexible, lightweight and efficient graphene-based devices.

Abstract:We report the design and preparation of graphene and polyaniline (PANI) woven-fabric composite films by in situ electropolymerization. The introduction of PANI greatly improves the electrochemical properties of solid-state supercapacitors which possess capacitances as high as 23 mF cm(-2), and exhibit excellent cycling stability with similar to 100% capacitance retention after 2000 cycles. The devices have displayed superior flexibility with improved areal specific capacitances to 118% during deformation.

Abstract:It is difficult for carbonaceous materials to combine a large specific surface area with flexibility. Here, a flexible all-carbon nanoarchitecture based on the in situ growth of nanoporous graphene within "skeletal-capillary" carbon nanotube (CNT) networks has been achieved by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. Multi-path long-range conductivity is established, and the porous graphene provides a large specific surface area for charge storage. The flexibility of the films allows them to be directly used as binder-free electrodes for supercapacitors. Since the polymeric binders are saved, the supercapacitors exhibit a higher overall storage density.

Abstract:The direct coating of graphene sheets obtained by electrochemical exfoliation on commercial paper ren- ders the preparation of highly conductive flexible paper substrate for subsequent deposition of polyani- line (PANi) nanorods via electrochemical polymerization. The deposition of PANi can be well-controlled by adjusting the electrochemical polymerization time, leading to the formation of PANi coated graphene paper (PANi-GP). The as-prepared electrode exhibited high areal capacitance of 176 mF cm ? 2 in three- electrode system at a current density of 0.2 mA cm ? 2 , which is around 10 times larger than that of pris- tine graphene paper due to the pseudocapacitive behavior of PANi. In-situ Raman test was used to de- termine the molecular changes during redox process of PANi. More importantly, all-solid-state symmetric capacitor assembled with two PANi-GP electrodes in a polymer electrolyte delivered an areal capacitance of 123 mF cm ? 2 , corresponding to an areal energy density of 17.1 μWh cm ? 2 and an areal power density of 0.25 mW cm ? 2 . The symmetric capacitor held a capacitive retention of 74.8％ after 500 bending tests from 0 to 120 °, suggesting the good flexibility and mechanical stability. These results showed the great promising application in flexible energy-storage devices.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors assembled with two-dimensional materials have become a research hotspot in recent years. Here, we have prepared two-dimensional nanomaterial MoS2 and SWCNT, CNF aerogel composite electrode, and its flexible all-solid-state supercapacitor. SWCNT can inhibit the accumulation of MoS2 nanosheets and enhance the conductivity of the composite electrode. CNF can improve the dispersion uniformity of MoS2 and SWCNT, and endow the composite electrode with a high specific surface area (328.86 m2 g-1) and excellent flexibility. MoS2-SWCNT/CNF supercapacitor has a good rectangular CV curve and symmetrical triangular GCD curve. The CV curve of the MoSCF3 supercapacitor with the highest MoS2-SWCNT content remains rectangular even at the scanning rate of 2000 mV s-1. Its voltage window can reach 1.5 V. MoS2-SWCNT/CNF supercapacitor has a specific capacity of 605.32 mF cm-2 (scanning rate of 2 mV s-1) and 30.34 F g-1 (0.01 A g-1), an area specific energy of 35.61 mWh cm-2 (area specific power of 0.03 mW cm-2), and extremely high cycle stability (91.01% specific capacity retention rate after 10 000 cycles) and good flexibility. The fine nanocomposite structure gives MoS2-SWCNT/CNF supercapacitor impressive electrochemical performance and excellent flexibility, which can be used in the field of portable electronic devices and flexible devices.

Abstract:Abstract Flexibility of the films and the limited ion transport in the vertical direction of film highly restrict the development of flexible supercapacitors. Herein, we have developed hybrid porous films consisting of N-doped holey graphene nanosheets (NHGR) with abundant in-plane nanopores and the vertically aligned polyaniline nanowires arrays on polypyrrole nanotubes (PPy@PANI) via a two-step oxidative polymerization strategy and vacuum filtration. The rational design can efficiently shorten the diffusion path of electrons/ions, alleviate volume variation of electrodes during cycling, enhance electric conductivity of the hybrids, and while offer abundant active interfacial sites for electrochemical reaction. Benefiting from the distinctive structural and compositional merits, the obtained PPy@PANI/NHGR film electrode manifests an excellent electrochemical properties in terms of specific capacity (1348 mF cm −2 at a current density of 1 mA cm −2 ), rate capability (81.2% capacitance retention from 1 to 30 mA cm −2 ), and cycling stability (capacitance retention of 73.7% at 20 mA cm −2 after 7000 cycles). Matched with NHGR negative electrode, the assembled flexible all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor displays a remarkable areal capacitance of 359 mF cm −2 at 5 mA cm −2 , maximum areal energy density of 112.2 μ Wh cm −2 at 3.747 mW cm −2 , and good flexibility at various bending angles while preserving stable cycling performance. The result shows the PPy@PANI/NHGR film with high flexibility and 3D ions transport channels is highly attractive for flexible energy storage devices.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors that maintain electrochemical performance under deformation have attracted much attention for the potential application in the flexible electronics market. A compressible and flexible free-standing electrodes sponge and all-solid-state symmetric supercapacitors based on as prepared electrodes are presented. The carbon nanotubes (CNTs) framework is synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, and then composited with poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) PEDOT by the electrodeposition. This CNTs/PEDOT sponge electrode shows highest mass-specific capacitance of 147 Fg(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), tuned by the PEDOT mass loading, and exhibits good cyclic stability with the evidence that more than 95% of capacitance is remained after 3000 cycles. Furthermore, the symmetric supercapacitor shows the highest energy density of 12.6 Wh kg(-1) under the power density of 1 kW kg(-1) and highest power density of 10.2 kW kg(-1) with energy density of 8 Wh kg(-1), which exhibits both high energy density and power density. The electrochemical performance of composite electrode also indicates that the operate voltage of device could be extend to 1.4 V by the n-doping and p-doping process in different potential of PEDOT component. This flexible supercapacitor maintains stable electrochemical performance working on different bending condition, which shows promising prospect for wearable energy storage applications. Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors have drawn tremendous attention resulting from the rapid development of wearable electronic devices. Herein, we develop an effective and facile two-step approach to prepare high content nitrogen, sulfur co-doped porous carbon nanofibers film as electrodes of flexible supercapacitors. Benefiting from the high specific surface area and rich nitrogen/sulfur content, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped porous carbon fibers film (N, S co-doped PCFF) electrodes exhibit a high mass specific capacitance of 307.8 F g(-1), and the capacitance retains 98% of initial capacitance after 5000 cycles in a three-electrode system. The as-assembled flexible supercapacitor devices with polyvinyl alcohol/KOH gel electrolyte demonstrate a highest mass specific capacitance of single electrode of 183.9 F g-1 at the scan rate of 2 mV s-1, which is better than that of other heteroatom doping carbon materials. In addition, the energy density reaches as high as 16.35 Wh kg(-1) with the power density of 147 W kg(-1) and retains as 5.34 Wh kg(-1) with higher power density of 2402 W kg(-1). Abstract:Flexible and easily reconfigurable supercapacitors show great promise for application in wearable electronics. In this study, multiwall C nanotubes (CNTs) decorated with hierarchical ultrathin zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanosheets (ZnS@CNT) are synthesized via a facile method. The resulting ZnS@CNT electrode, which delivers a high specific capacitance of 347.3 F·g–1 and an excellent cycling stability, can function as a high-performance electrode for a flexible all-solid-state supercapacitor using a polymer gel electrolyte. Our device exhibits a remarkable specific capacitance of 159.6 F·g–1, a high energy density of 22.3 W·h·kg–1, and a power density of 5 kW·kg–1. It also has high electrochemical performance even under bending or twisting. The all-solid-state supercapacitors can be easily integrated in series to power different commercial light-emitting diodes without an external bias voltage.

Abstract:Nanocellulose has become one of the most attractive matrix materials for flexible supercapacitors, owing to the high surface area, good mechanical properties and environmental friendliness. Herein, we developed electrode materials with high capacitance and mechanical flexibility through the in-situ synthesis of polypyrrole (PPy) in TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibril (TOCN)/sulfonated carbon nanotubes (SCNT) composite hydrogels. The TOCN/SCNT/PPy composite hydrogels were thus obtained via a bifunctional Fe3+ in-situ oxidation, showing high specific capacitance of 5299 mF/cm2 at a current density of 1 mA/cm2. Furthermore, the assembled symmetric TOCN-40SCNT-PPy solid-state supercapacitor exhibited outstanding capacitance of 375 mF/cm2 and electrochemical stability with 163.2 % capacitance retention at a current density of 1 mA/cm2 for 2500 cycles. These nanocellulose/carbon nanotube/polypyrrole hydrogels are thus promising in the fields of flexible solid-state supercapacitor with superior electrochemical performance.
