Abstract:Control over the orientation of cylindrical and lamellar domains is required for pattern transfer in block copolymer lithography. Previous work mainly focuses on the use of random copolymer brushes to control the wetting behaviors of block copolymers (BCPs), but random copolymerization is only limited, to a few monomer pairs. Here we demonstrate the use of homopolymer brushes/mats to modify the substrate to form a chemically homogeneous surface. The surface affinity is tuned by changing the monomer substituent, and a variety of wetting behaviors are obtained in BCP films on homopolymer brushes/mats. Three series of hydroxy-terminated or cross-linkable homopolymers, including polymethacrylate, polyacrylate, and polystyrene derivatives, are prepared for controlling the BCP substrate interaction. Both preferential and nonpreferential wetting behaviors of poly(styrene-b-methyl methacrylate), poly(styrene-b-rac-lactide), and poly (styrene-b-propylene carbonate) films are obtained as the homopolymer structures change in terms of the carbon contents, indicating that this homopolymer approach may be applicable to any BCPs. Moreover, homopolymer brushes can also substitute random copolymer brushes in directed self-assembly of BCP films with density multiplication on the chemical pattern. The use of homopolymer brushes/mats may have advantages over random copolymer brushes or blend brushes in terms of reproducibility and uniformity of brush formation, reduction of defect density, and increase of assembly kinetics.
Fast Phase Transfer of Graphene Oxide from Water to Triglycidyl Para-Aminophenol for Epoxy Composites with Superior Nanosheet Dispersion

Abstract:Currently the incorporation of graphene within polymer matrices requires complicated, energy-intensive, and time-consuming sample preparation steps. We report that the self-assembly of graphene oxide (GO) with triglycidyl para-aminophenol (TGPAP), a liquid tertiary amine-type epoxy oligomer, results in the direct and fast phase transfer of GO from water to TGPAP via simple manual stirring under ambient conditions for a very short time. The formation of TGPAP/GO complexes by the partial charge transfer from the carboxylic acid groups of GO to the tertiary amine group of TGPAP was found to be responsible for the fast phase transfer. After the in-situ thermal reduction and curing process, few-layer nanosheets of the reduced GO (rGO) disperse very uniformly in the final epoxy/rGO composites. The mechanical properties of the epoxy/rGO composites and the multiscale reinforced composites with continuous microscale carbon fiber and rGO as the primary and secondary reinforcements, respectively, are remarkably enhanced.
One-pot Synthesis of Octablock Copolymers of High-Molecular Weight Via RAFT Emulsion Polymerization

Abstract:Multiblock copolymers (mBCPs) could offer new opportunities to design new nanomaterials with multifunctions or enhanced properties in a cost-effective way. However, it is still very challenging to obtain high degree of polymerization in each block of mBCPs with large block number using one-pot synthesis via controlled radical polymerizations. This is due to the accumulation of the dead chains throughout the many step polymerization. In this work, we developed a new highly efficient strategy for preparing mBCPs with large block number using one-pot reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization, where every polymer block was formed by sequential addition of monomers. We achieved high block degree of polymerizations (similar to 100 per block) for a model system of "octablock" polystyrene (PS) in just 2 hr per block. Experimentally measured molecular weights are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. The dead chains generated through the polymerization are negligible due to the low initiator concentration. Yet the polymerization rates are still very fast due to the heterogeneous advantages of emulsion polymerization. We have also applied this strategy to a series of mBCPs from diblock (PS176-PnBA(286))(1) to octablock (PS176-PnBA(286))(4) (PnBA for poly(n-butyl acrylate)). The high degree of polymerization in our mBCPs ensures microphase separation even though PS/PnBA system is known for small chi values. We have also found that the tensile properties of our mBCPs increase significantly with increased number of blocks. Our work reveals that the number of blocks is an important molecular variable for tuning the mechanical properties of block copolymers.

Abstract:A well-defined block copolymer brush poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-graft-(poly(methyl methacrylate)-block- poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate)) (PGMA-g-(PMMA-b-POEGMA)) is synthesized via grafting from an approach based on a combination of click chemistry and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The resulting block copolymer brushes were characterized by 1H-NMR and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The self-assembly of the block copolymer brush was then investigated under selective solvent conditions in three systems: THF/water, THF/CH3OH, and DMSO/CHCl3. PGMA-g-(PMMA-b-POEGMA) was found to self-assemble into spherical micelle structures as analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The average size of the particles was much smaller in THF/CH3OH and DMSO/CHCl3 as compared with the THF/water system. Thin film of block copolymer brushes with tunable surface properties was then prepared by the spin-coating technique. The thickness of the thin film was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Atom force microscopy (AFM) analysis revealed a spherical morphology when the block copolymer brush was treated with poor solvents for the backbone and hydrophobic side chains. The contact angle measurements were used to confirm the surface rearrangements of the block copolymer brushes.

General Avenue to Individually Dispersed Graphene Oxide-Based Two-Dimensional Molecular Brushes by Free Radical Polymerization

Abstract:We present a general strategy for facile synthesis of 2D macromolecular brushes. The ultraflat one-atomic layer of graphene oxide with micrometer-scale sheet topology was employed as the macromolecular backbone; more than 10 types of polymer chains were covalently tethered to the nanosheets through free radical polymerization, producing various 2D molecular brushes with multifunctional arms covering from polar to apolar, water-soluble to oil-soluble, acidic to basic, and functional to common polymers. The resulting molecular brushes are well soluble in desired solvents in the forms of individually dispersed hairy nanosheets. The growing process of 2D molecular brushes was clearly visualized by AFM. The giant 2D brushes with arm density up to 1.59 x 10(4) arms per mu m(2) of single side of graphene show high solubility (similar to 15 mg/mL), low intrinsic viscosity (similar to 100 mL/g), and fine electrical conductivity (similar to 8.4 x 10(-3) S/cm), and they can possess numerous epoxy and other functional groups at their arms if necessary, promising a luciferous foreground in both scientific research and industrial applications. The polymergrafted graphene oxide can be well dispersed in free polymer matrix and can be well soluble in solvents again, suggesting that nanocomposite of polymer-grafted graphene oxide and polymer can be readily produced by the solution-processing technique.

Abstract:In this work, linear polystyrene-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) and heteroarm star PS_22P2VP_22 ionizable block copolymers were used as dispersing agents for the liquid-phase exfoliation of pristine graphene. Various strategies such as direct exfoliation, film hydration and phase transfer have been employed and compared. The best strategy involved a two-step process, namely, pre-exfoliation of graphite in polymer/CHCl3 solutions followed by phase transfer to acidified water. High concentrations of stable aqueous suspensions of graphene flakes, highly enriched in monolayer structures, were then obtained by using the star-shaped copolymers as stabilizers. The as-prepared graphene/copolymer hybrids were used as a filler material in order to prepare functional polymer composites for mechanical reinforcement. Such copolymer-modified graphene sheets have proven to be efficient reinforcing agents of PVA, as a significant increase of storage modulus (145% higher than that of neat PVA) was achieved even at a low graphene weight fraction of 0.1 wt%.

Abstract:The characteristics of brush copolymers enable them applicable materials in catalysis, pharmaceutical and compatibilizer, and the scope of the application could be greatly expanded through the regulating of grafted branches. In this manuscript, the one-shot orthogonal preparation of heterografted brush copolymers has been achieved successfully with 1,8-diazabicyclo [5.4.0] undec-7-ene (DBU) as the catalyst of ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and ligand of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), avoiding the tedious purification processes in the two-step procedure for the synthesis of heterografted brush copolymers. Well-defined brush copolymers with various contents of poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) and poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) (PtBMA) graftings have been successfully prepared and the range of this method was further evaluated with a variety of cyclic and vinyl monomers in one-shot. Amphiphilic brush copolymer has also been successfully prepared allowing for the formation of micelles in water through self-assembling.

Abstract:Graphene oxides (GO) can be considered as polyelectrolytes with surfactant-like characteristics. On one hand, due to the electrical repulsion between the negatively charged ionized edges, GO exhibits great water solubility; on the other hand, its hydrophobic central plane retains the potential of strong pi-pi interaction with other conjugated sp(2) network structures. Therefore, it is expected that GO can serve as an excellent dispersing agent for dispersion of various carbon-based nanomaterials in aqueous phase. Here we report a systematic study of dispersing various carbon-based nanomaterials, including SWNTs, C-60, and graphene, by aqueous GO. The GO-dispersed all-carbon nanocomposites are characterized using various spectroscopic methods and electron microscopies, and their stabilities are tested. Compared to other dispersing agents, the GO concentration is much lower than the concentrations of other dispersing agents used when similar contents of carbon-based nanomaterials are dispersed. Involving only simple ultrasonication and centrifugation processes, GO dispersion thus offers an easy manipulation for large-scale solution-dispersed all-carbon nanocomposites.

Abstract:The controlled / living polymerization mechanisms have advantages on synthesizing the dispersant with defined structures and compositions, while encountering with individual drawbacks in industrial application. Based on the initiators for continuous activator regeneration atom transfer radical polymerization (ICAR ATRP) of oligo (ethylene oxide)methyl ether methacrylate (OEEMA) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) monomers, the diblock copolymers POEOMA-b-P(OEOEMA-co-GMA) were prepared. The GMA units were further modified with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) agent. The polymerization and modification procedure can be readily realized in a one-pot technology with complete monomer conversion (-100%) and high ring-opening efficiency (-100%), as well as low concentration copper catalyst (100 ppm). Using the MPA modified P(OEOEMA-co-GMA) as anchoring block, POEOMA as stabilizing block, the obtained block copolymers can be used as dispersant to disperse and stabilize the pigment yellow 14. The standing experiment, optical microscope (OM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements reached to a consistent conclusion that the absolute number of carboxyl groups on each chain modulate the dispersibility of the dispersions, rather than the relative content of carboxyl groups. This work provided a feasible one-pot technology to efficient dispersants.

Abstract:Multiblock polymers were prepared by combination of ATRP (CuBr/tris[(2-pyridyl)methyl]amine) and RAFT polymerization involving cyclic trithiocarbonate (CTTC). In the combined polymerization system, the ATRP was introduced as constant radical source, CTTC underwent ring-opening polymerization, and the incorporated trithiocarbonate moieties derived from CTTCs performed as RAFT agent. Through the integrated process, multiblock polymers containing predictable average block number together with controlled molecular weight of the blocks were prepared by one-pot polymerization. The average block number of polymer was controlled by concentration ratio of CTTC to alkyl halide in ARTP, and the molecular weight of block were well regulated by concentration of CTTC and monomer conversion.
Novel Preparation of Noncovalent Modified GO Using RAFT Polymerization to Reinforce the Performance of Waterborne Epoxy Coatings

Abstract:This work launches the first-ever report on the fabrication of waterborne epoxy-graphene oxide (GO) coatings (WEGC) using a block polymer as a dispersant of GO, wherein the block polymer was synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of acrylic acid and oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate A number of analytical techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), and salt spray tests, were utilized to explore the morphology and performance of the WEGC. It was confirmed that POEGMA950-b-PAA attached to the GO nanosheets, increasing the integral space of the sheets. Modified GO (MGO) layers were well-dispersed in the epoxy matrix through the formation of a GO-dispersant-epoxy ternary molecular structure. Furthermore, the presence of MGO substantially influenced the thermal properties, mechanical properties, and anticorrosion performance of the WEGC. TGA, salt spray tests, and pull-off testsshowed that 0.5 wt.% MGO content achieved the greatest improvement in the evaluated properties.

Abstract:Pristine graphene flakes, with ∼12% monolayers, are directly exfoliated from natural graphite, and noncovalently modified by an amorphous–crystalline block copolymer, polyvinylcyclohexane-b-polyethylene-b-polyvinylcyclohexane (PVCH-b-PE-b-PVCH). The PE block selectively crystallizes on the graphene surface, while the PVCH block extends freely and stabilizes the graphene flakes in the aliphatic and aromatic solvents, which are generally viewed as nonsolvents for graphene. The rational solubility of the graphene flakes in these low-boiling-point solvents facilitates their solution-phase processing. After vacuum filtration, a freestanding graphene film with excellent electrical and mechanical properties is obtained, which can meet the requirements of large-area graphene-based thin-film devices.
A dense graphene monolith with poloxamer prefunctionalization enabling aqueous redispersion to obtain solubilized graphene sheets

Abstract:The realization of good aqueous dispersibility of commercial graphene products composed of exfoliated graphene sheets is of significance for downstream applications. However, the tap density of commercial graphene powder is quite low (0.03–0.1 kg/m3), meaning that 1 kg graphene powder occupies about 10 – 30 m3 in volume during transportation. And, the available content of commercial graphene dispersion/slurry in aqueous medium cannot exceed 5 wt%, although the density is high (≈ 1,050 kg/m3). In this work, a graphene monolith was prepared by oven-drying of graphene sheets prefunctionalized with poloxamer surfactants. Our graphene monoliths not only have a high density (1,500 kg/m3) and high graphene content (≈ 10 wt%), but also a full capability to be completely redispersed (≈ 100%) in water by bath sonication to obtain solubilized graphene sheets, whose lateral size and thickness are unchanged compared to as-exfoliated ones. Moreover, a simple empirical method was proposed to predict the redispersion capability of graphene monoliths using different poloxamers by contact angle measurements. Our results provide a universal approach to make exfoliated graphene-based products with better downstream availability and lower transportation cost.

Abstract:This article presents the recent developments of radical dispersion polymerizaton controlled by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) for the production of block copolymer particles of various morphologies, such as core-shell spheres, worms, or vesicles. It is not meant to be an exhaustive review but it rather provides guidelines for non-specialists. The article is subdivided into eight sections. After a general introduction, the mechanism of polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) through RAFT-mediated dispersion polymerization is presented and the different parameters that control the morphology produced are discussed. The next two sections are devoted to the choice of the monomer/solvent pair and the macroRAFT agent. Afterwards, post-polymerization morphological order-to-order transitions (i.e. morphological transitions triggered by extrinsic stimuli) or order-to-disorder transitions (i.e. disassembly of chains) are discussed. Assemblies based on more complex polymer architectures, such as triblock copolymers, are presented next, and finally the possibility to stabilize these structures by crosslinking is reported. The manuscript ends with a short conclusion and an outlook.

Abstract:It is difficult to disperse graphene flakes well in an aqueous solution while maintaining conductivity due to its high hydrophobicity. Herein, we demonstrated that a well-dispersed state of graphene in an aqueous solution was realized by using reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with a suitable content of oxygen-functional groups. A rGO-dispersed graphene (rGO/G) film was fabricated from the graphene dispersion with good conductivity by using rGO with a C/O ratio of 2.48 as the surfactant. Also, the prepared rGO/G aerogel has a broad prospect. Density functional theory calculation revealed that the strong electrostatic repulsion, which was more potent than the van der Waals force and the π-π interaction, was the primary driving force promoting the dispersibility of graphene in an aqueous solution. Furthermore, the repulsion of the rGO/G dispersion decreased with the reduction of the oxygen-functional groups of rGO. Therefore, applying rGO with an appropriate content of oxygen-functional groups is an alternative option to improve the dispersibility of graphene in an aqueous medium while maintaining its original properties, from which many potential applications could be expected.

Abstract:This work describes, a quick and easy single‐step biofunctionalization method for dispersing graphene in aqueous media using an enzymatic conjugation approach to covalently incorporate short aromatic/charged tripeptides giving rise to homogenous graphene functionalization. The resulting stable graphene dispersions hold significant promise for enhancing biocompatibility for diverse biological applications. Graphene, a 2D carbon material, possesses extraordinary mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties, making it highly attractive for various biological applications such as biosensing, biotherapeutics, and tissue engineering. However, the tendency of graphene sheets to aggregate and restack hinders its dispersion in water, limiting these applications. Peptides, with their defined amino acid sequences and versatile functionalities, are compelling molecules with which to modify graphene—aromatic amino acids can strengthen interactions through π‐stacking and charged groups can be chosen to make the sheets dispersible and stable in water. Here, a facile and green method for covalently functionalizing and dispersing graphene using amphiphilic tripeptides, facilitated by a tyrosine phenol side chain, through an aqueous enzymatic oxidation process is demonstrated. The presence of a second aromatic side chain group enhances this interaction through non‐covalent support via π–π stacking with the graphene surface. Futhermore, the addition of charged moieties originating from either ionizable amino acids or terminal groups facilitates profound interactions with water, resulting in the dispersion of the newly functionalized graphene in aqueous solutions. This biofunctionalization method resulted in ≈56% peptide loading on the graphene surface, leading to graphene dispersions that remain stable for months in aqueous solutions outperforming currently used surfactants.
