Abstract:Graphene nanoplatelets are promising candidates for enhancing the electrical conductivity of composites. However, because of their poor dispersion, graphene nanoplatelets must be added in large amounts to achieve the desired electrical properties, but such large amounts limit the industrial application of graphene nanoplatelets. Multi‐walled carbon nanotubes also possess high electrical conductivity accompanied by poor dispersion. Therefore, a synergistic effect was generated between graphene nanoplatelets and multi‐walled carbon nanotubes and used for the first time to prepare antistatic materials with high‐density polyethylene via 1‐step melt blending. The synergistic effect makes it possible to significantly improve the electrical properties by adding a small amount of untreated graphene nanoplatelets and multi‐walled carbon nanotubes and increases the possibility of using graphene nanoplatelets in industrial applications. When only 1 wt% graphene nanoplatelets and 0.5 wt% multi‐walled carbon nanotubes were added, the surface and volume resistivity values of the composites were much lower than those of the composites that were only added 3 wt% graphene nanoplatelets. Additionally, as a result of the synergistic effect of graphene nanoplatelets and multi‐walled carbon nanotubes, the composites met the requirements for antistatic materials.

Abstract:In the past few years, graphene-based nanocomposites are a hot topic in the fields of materials and chemistry owing to their unique features. We describe a facile melt blending method for preparing polypropylene/graphene nanocomposites in this article. The first stage involved grafting graphene onto chlorinated PP using the Friedel–Crafts reaction. The second stage involved the use of the resulting PP grafted graphene (PPG) as fillers in a melt blend with commercial PP. After being grafted with an organic PP chain, graphene becomes lipophilic; consequently, the PPG can be dispersed well within the PP matrix while retaining excellent interface adhesion. As a result, the thermostability, mechanical performance, and electrical conductivity of PP were significantly improved through the addition of PPG fillers. Additionally, with 10 wt% of PPG fillers (equivalent to 5 wt% graphene sheets), the conductivity approaches 6.8 S m−1. As a result of this research, a new method for producing high-performance PP has been developed.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Graphene nanoplatelets coated by polyaniline (GNP@PANI) and ethylene–vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer–high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) were used for the first time to prepare high‐performance antistatic composites through an effective method that combined solution mixing and melt blending. GNP@PANI nanocomposites were fabricated by in situ polymerization to improve the dispersion of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) in the EVA–HDPE matrix and the compatibility between the GNPs and the EVA–HDPE matrix. The GNP@PANI nanocomposites and EVA were first prepared as a premix through solution mixing, and then, the premix and HDPE were prepared as highly antistatic composites through melt blending. The dispersion of the GNPs in the EVA–HDPE matrix and the compatibility between the GNPs and the EVA–HDPE matrix were confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy observations. The GNP@PANI–EVA–HDPE composites met the requirements for antistatic materials when the content of the GNP@PANI nanocomposites was 5 wt % with only about 1 wt % GNPs. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Electrically conductive ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/graphene nanosheets composites with a segregated structure were prepared by electrostatic adsorption method. It was found that UHMWPE powders could generate static electricity after high-speed mechanical friction which was beneficial to adsorb fluffy graphene on the surface of polymer powders. UHMWPE/graphene nanosheets composites with a segregated network produced by hot-pressing exhibited a dramatic enhancement in electrical conductivity with the percolation threshold of 0.1vol.%.

Abstract:Graphene is a new reinforcement material of composites with its unique structure and excellent performance. In this study,we have prepared polyvinyl butyral/chemically functionalized graphene nanocomposite with solution blending. The nanocomposite had been characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, DSC, TG and UV photometer. The rerults showed that the approach behind dispersing the chemically functionalized graphene in a polyvinyl butyral matrix was to achieve good dispersion, and the Composite is amorphous. With the introduction of chemically functionalized graphene, the glass transition temperature have decreased and the flexibility have increased. The nanocomposite material has a good UV absorptivity.

Abstract:By introducing polyaniline nanofibers (PaniNFs) as a stabilizer during the conversion of graphene oxide to graphene in an aqueous medium under ultrasound, the aggregation of the intermediates and products was effectively suppressed. A stable dispersion of PaniNFs and graphene (G) with a high concentration was obtained. This method represents a convenient and potential route to prepare a PaniNF-G dispersion on a large scale, which may increase the applications of graphene. Vacuum filtration of the dispersion yields a high-quality self-supporting PaniNF/G composite film, whose electrical conductivity can be increased by rinsing with hydrochloric acid.

Abstract:Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene(PE-UHMW)/graphene nanoplatelets(GNPs) composites were prepared through solution blending and ultrasonic dispersion,and their electrical properties were investigated.SEM showed that GNPs were well distributed in PE-UHMW,and the composites had a typical percolation behavior with a threshold of 2.8wt%.With increasing GNPs contents,positive temperature coefficient(PTC)intensity of the composites gradually decreased.Thermal cycles decreased PTC intensity.

Abstract:Since its recent successful isolation, graphene has attracted an enormous amount of scientific interest due to its exceptional physical properties. Graphene incorporation can improve electrical and mechanical properties of polymers including polyethylene (PE). However, the hydrophobic nature and low polarity of PE have made effective dispersion of nano-fillers difficult without compatibilization. Graphene was derived from graphite oxide (GO) via rapid thermal exfoliation and reduction. This thermally reduced graphene oxide (TRG) was blended via melt and solvent blending with linear low density PE (LLDPE) and its functionalized analogs (amine, nitrile and isocyanate) produced using a ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) strategy. TRG was well exfoliated in functionalized LLDPE while phase separated morphology was observed in the un-modified LLDPE. Transmission electron micrographs showed that solvent based blending more effectively dispersed these exfoliated carbon sheets than did melt compounding. Tensile modulus was higher for composites with functionalized polyethylenes when solvent blending was used. However, at less than 3 wt.% of TRG, electrical conductivity of the un-modified LLDPE was higher than that of the functionalized ones. This may be due to phase segregation between graphene and PE, and electrical percolation within the continuous filler-rich phase.

Abstract:Graphene sheets were carbon materials with high surface area, and excellent electrical properties. One of the most promising applications of those materials is in polymer nanocomposites. Their multifunctional properties may create new applications of polymer nanocomposites. In this paper, graphene sheets were prepared by oxidation-reduction method. The graphite was oxidized by potassium permanganate and sulphuric acid. The graphene oxide nanosheets, which were exfoliated from graphite oxide by ultrasound in water, were reduced by hydrazine hydrate, and the graphene nanosheets were obtained. Thereafter, the graphene sheets were dispersed in N,N-dimethylacetamide by simple sonication treatment. The graphene sheets/polyimide nanocomposites were synthesized by in situ polymerization using N,N'-dimethylformamide, graphene sheets and pyromellitic dianhydride. It was observed from transmission electron microscopy of graphene oxide sheets and graphene sheets that the very thin sheets were obtained by exfoliation of graphite. The result of FT-IR spectral analysis for graphene sheets shows the functional groups on the graphene sheets surface were almost the same as graphite, and that means the graphene sheets were complete reduced by hydrazine hydrate. A homogeneous dispersion of graphene sheets was achieved in polyimide as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract:Graphene has a unique oneatom thick two-dimensional structure, large specific surface area, and excellent electronic, optical, thermal and mechanical properties. Graphene can be blended into polymers to form composites through either covalent or noncovalent (e. g. hydrogen bonding, pi-pi stacking and electrostatic) interactions. These interactions can increase the dispersibility of graphene in polymer matrices and also can improve the properties of graphene/polymer composites or extend their functions. Several methods including solution mixing, melt blending and in situ polymerization have been developed to prepare graphene/polymer composites. These composites can be processed into thin films by solvent evaporation, casting, vacuum filtration or layer-by-layer assembly. Graphene/polymer composite films have potential applications in highstrength structural materials, supercapacitors, photovoltaic devices, lithium ion batteries and sensors. In this review, we summarize the recent advancements on the preparation and applications of graphene/polymer composite thin films. The issues and challenges that remain in this field were also be discussed.

Abstract:Dispersion of graphene nanosheets (GNs) in a polymer matrix as mono layers was an important step towards fabricating high performance polymer/GNs nanocomposites. However, the insoluble and infusible properties of poly (tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) made the incorporation of nanofillers in PTFE matrix difficult. In this paper, a novel method based on poly (tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) latex that assured the fine dispersion of GNs in PTFE matrix was developed. PTFE latex was first modified by polyethylenimine (PEI) to create the positive charges on the surface of the PTFE particles, and then assembled with negatively charged graphene oxide sheets directly in water through electrostatic interaction, followed with chemical reduction, cold briquetting and hot sintering. Nanocomposites with controllable content and uniformly distributed GNs in PTFE matrix were prepared. The electrostatic coupling interactions improved the dispersion of GNs and facilitated the formation of filler networks in the PTFE matrix. Both the mechanical and wear performance of PTFE/GNs nanocomposites were greatly improved. PTFE/GNs nanocomposites also exhibited excellent electrical properties with a percolation threshold as low as 0.5wt% and an electrical conductivity of 1.4S/m at only 2wt% graphene loadings. The new method agrees well with the latex technical process in PTFE bulk industrial manufacture and paves the way for an environmentally benign process for the bulk production of high quality polymer–graphene nanocomposites.

Abstract:Graphite nanosheets (GNS) were fabricated in water through assistance of high pressure homogenization (HPH).Poly (vinyl alcohol)/graphite nanosheets (PVA/GNS)composites were prepared by varying the amount of GNS loading in the solution.The morphology of the GNS was characterized by the SEM and AFM.It is found that HPH can exfoliate graphite efficiently and the prepared GNS has better stability in PVA solution than graphite.The percolation threshold of PVA/GNS composite at room temperature is as low as 3.36 ％ (volume fraction),much lower than that of the composites filled with conventional graphite particles.The conducting behavior of the composites is interpreted by percolation theory.

Abstract:In recent years, polymer/graphene nanocomposites have attracted much attention because of their wide applications in many fields, such as chemistry, physics, materials and electronics. In this review, the preparation methods of polymer/graphene nanocomposites, including solution blending, melt blending and in situ polymerisation, were presented in order to study the relationship between these methods and their final properties. Each method has an influence on the final characteristics of the nanocomposites. Their respective advantages and disadvantages were discussed. Additionally, the potential application research of graphene-reinforced polymer nanocomposites, including supercapacitors, sensors and solar cells was detailed comprehensively. The current review demonstrated that the nanocomposites exhibit superior performances and will be applied as new materials or novel devices. The research direction of polymer/graphene nanocomposites in the future was also predicted.

Abstract:The extensive use of electronic equipment in modern life causes potential electromagnetic pollution harmful to human health. Therefore, it is of great significance to enhance the electrical conductivity of polymers, which are widely used in electronic components, to screen out electromagnetic waves. The fabrication of graphene/polymer composites has attracted much attention in recent years due to the excellent electrical properties of graphene. However, the uniform distribution of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) in a non-polar polymer matrix like polypropylene (PP) still remains a challenge, resulting in the limited improvement of electrical conductivity of PP-based composites achieved to date. Here, we propose a single-step approach to prepare GNPs/PP composites embedded with a segregated architecture of GNPs by coating PP particles with GNPs, followed by hot-pressing. As a result, the electrical conductivity of 10 wt % GNPs-loaded composites reaches 10.86 S.cm(-1), which is approximate to 7 times higher than that of the composites made by the melt-blending process. Accordingly, a high electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 19.3 dB can be achieved. Our method is green, low-cost, and scalable to develop 3D GNPs architecture in a polymer matrix, providing a versatile composite material suitable for use in electronics, aerospace, and automotive industries.

Abstract:A graphene nanosheet (GNS)/polyaniline (PANI) composite was synthesized using in situ polymerization. The morphology and microstructure of samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transition electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Electrochemical properties were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge/discharge. GNS as a support material could provide more active sites for nucleation of PANI as well as excellent electron transfer path. The GNS was homogeneously coated on both surfaces with PANI nanoparticles (∼2nm), and a high specific capacitance of 1046Fg−1 (based on GNS/PANI composite) was obtained at a scan rate of 1mVs−1 compared to 115Fg−1 for pure PANI. In addition, the energy density of GNS/PANI composite could reach 39Whkg−1 at a power density of 70kWkg−1.

Abstract:The greatest challenge in developing polymer/graphene nanocomposites is to prevent graphene layers stacking; in this respect, we found effective solution-mixing polymers with cost-effective graphene of hydrophobic surface. Since graphene oxide is hydrophilic and in need of reduction, highly conducing graphene platelets (GnPs) of similar to 3 nm in thickness were selected to solution-mix with a commonly used elastomer - styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). A percolation threshold of electrical conductivity was observed at 5.3 vol% of GnPs, and the SBR thermal conductivity enhanced three times at 24 vol%. Tensile strength, Young's modulus and tear strength were improved by 413%, 782% and 709%, respectively, at 16.7 vol%. Payne effect, an important design criteria for elastomers used in dynamic loading environment, was also investigated. The comparison of solution mixing with melt compounding, where the same starting materials were used, demonstrated that solution mixing is more effective in promoting the reinforcing effect of GnPs, since it provides more interlayer spacing for elastomer molecules intercalating and retains the high aspect ratio of GnPs leading to filler-filler network at a low volume fraction. We also compared the reinforcing effect of GnPs with those of carbon black and carbon nanotubes. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Antistatic Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) materials had been successfully prepared through solution-blending incorporation of ethylene glycol-graft-Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (EG-g-MWCNTs). MWCNTs were first carboxylated and then esterified with EG to yield EG-g-MWCNTs. The FT-ER spectra, TEM images, Raman spectra, TGA curves and electrical conductivity were investigated, which indicated that the agglomeration degree of MWCNTs has been reduced and the conductivity keeps as high as 4.278 S/cm after the modification of EG. On the other hand, EG-g-MWCNTs dispersed well in EG, which was one of the synthetic monomers for PET, and thus ensured its good compatibility with PET. As a result, the electrical conductivity of PET/EG-g-MWCNTs nanocomposites (0.1 wt%) was seven orders of magnitude higher than pure PET and reached the antistatic level.

Abstract:<p>Carbon nanomaterials are effective conductive fillers for permanent antistatic composites due to their long-term stability in electrical conductivity under ambient temperature and humidity. Where graphene or graphene-like materials have been demonstrated to be the most promising conductive fillers. However, the preparation of graphene and further dispersion into polymer matrices to obtain interconnected conductive networks is still a big challenge for conductive composites. A facile green path (all solid states), microsphere rolling transfer method, has been adopted to introduce nano-graphite conductive fillers for polyethylene. The nano-graphites were well dispersed into polyethylene matrices to give interconnected networks with low loading. The conductivity reinforcements of nano-graphite fillers even overtake those of complicated graphene fillers. The percolation threshold of the conductive composites with nano-graphite fillers for polyethylene has been demonstrated to be as low as 0.85 wt%. The electrical conductivity of the conductive composites was measured to increase by 13 orders of magnitude with 2.05 wt% nano-graphite fillers (0.02 S/m), much higher than traditional solid mixing methods and approaching to the best effects from complicated solution mixing of graphene fillers. The nano-graphite conductive networks are easily adjusted and the method is feasible to almost all conventional solid resins and industrial production.</p>

Abstract:This work report a facile, rapid and efficient approach to prepare high-concentration graphene and MoS2 nanosheets through the liquid phase exfoliation of bulk materials with the method of high-pressure homogenisation assisted by carboxyl methyl cellulose. The few-layer graphene and MoS2 nanosheets dispersions are prepared under 100 MPa for 10 min at high concentrations up to 1.45 and 0.28 mg/ml. The two nanodispersions could be applied to prepare the polyvinyl alcohol composite with well dispersibility and thermal stability.
