Abstract:Developing functional membrane with high conductivity and excellent stability is critical for improving the performance of vanadium redox flow batteries. In this work, we propose and prepare an asymmetric porous polybenzimidazole membrane composed of an ultra‐thin dense layer and a sponge‐like porous layer. The dense layer takes the main role of inhibiting vanadium crossover while the porous layer provides not only a fast proton conduction channel but also a mechanical support to the dense layer. Hence, the asymmetric PBI membrane exhibits a high proton conductivity (36.4 mS cm−1 at room temperature) and an extremely low vanadium permeability (0.26 × 10−7 cm2 min−1). The vanadium redox flow battery with this membrane achieves an energy efficiency of 83.17% at 400 mA cm−2 and 78.59% at 500 mA cm−2. Furthermore, the battery enables to be continuously cycled for 1600 times without significant degradation at 400 mA cm−2. All these results prove that the PBI membrane with an asymmetric porous structure is an ideal membrane for redox flow batteries.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A simple salt-induced phase separation method is presented to prepare porous polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes with tunable morphology for vanadium flow batteries (VFBs). This method is based on the traditional nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method where salt is introduced into the coagulation bath to change the ionic strength of the nonsolvent. The change of ionic strength will affect the phase separation rate, and finally, the morphology of porous membranes is well tuned from finger-like voids to sponge-like pores in site. The membrane with sponge-like pores created multiple barriers to the transfer of vanadium ions, offering the membrane with superhigh selectivity; meanwhile, spongy cells filled with sulfuric acid could provide the membrane with high proton conductivity. As a result, the membrane with sponge-like pores demonstrated a much better performance than that with finger-like voids. The resultant sponge-like porous PBI membrane exhibited a very impressive VFB performance with an energy efficiency of 89.9% at a current density of 80 mA cm-2, which was close to the highest values ever reported. The battery kept very stable performance even after continuously running for more than 10000 cycles at 160 mA cm-2, showing excellent stability. This paper provides an easy to scale up and environment-friendly method to fabricate high-performance porous membranes with tunable morphology.
Zwitterionic interface engineering enables ultrathin composite membrane for high-rate vanadium flow battery

Abstract:Thin membranes with high conductivity are of great importance for high power density vanadium flow batteries (VFBs), however, the trade-off between conductivity and ion selectivity limits their further development. Herein, an ultrathin composite membrane (∼10 μm) enabled by a zwitterionic interface between conductive polybenzimidazole (PBI) and porous polyethylene (PE) substrate is proposed to break the trade-off, and greatly enhance the power density of a VFB. The zwitterionic interface is engineered by the covalent reaction between polydopamine and zwitterionic sulfonated 3-dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPAPS). The as-fabricated composite membrane features excellent mechanical properties and high dimensional stability. Furthermore, the zwitterionic interface facilitates proton transportation while blocking vanadium-ion permeation. More importantly, the ion selectivity of the ultrathin membrane is nearly three times higher than the pure PBI membrane (i.e., 2.71 × 104 vs. 1.09 × 104 S min cm−3). As a result, a VFB assembled with the ultrathin membrane demonstrates a superior energy efficiency of 78.7% at 300 mA cm−2, and achieves an excellent cycle stability over 500 cycles at 300 mA cm−2. Therefore, the engineering of zwitterionic interface provides a promising strategy in the development of ultrathin composite membrane for high power density VFBs.

Abstract:Polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes with nanophase-separated structure induced by non-ionic hydrophilic side chain are designed and fabricated for vanadium flow batteries (VFBs). The designed PBI membranes are prepared by grafting non-ionic hydrophilic side chains via an N-substitution reaction. This molecular modification induces nanophase separation and formation of hydrophilic clusters, which act as effective proton transfer pathways, hence dramatically improving the proton conductivity. Meanwhile, the vanadium permeability is inappreciable due to the appropriate size of hydrophilic clusters and Donnan exclusion of protonated grafted-PBI membranes (GPBI). Free from ion exchange groups, GPBI membranes maintain the good chemical stability of the pristine PBI membrane. As a result, the designed membrane exhibits an impressive performance, combining ultrahigh proton conductivity, ion selectivity and chemical stability. The GPBI-based VFB exhibits a coulombic efficiency of over 99% and an energy efficiency of 84% at 120 mA cm(-2), the highest reported for dense PBI membranes for VFB applications. The decent stability of GPBI membranes is demonstrated by the stable performance over 200 charge-discharge cycles and the ex situ immersion test. This work provides a new insight into the design of high-performance PBI membranes for VFB applications.

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes are potential replacement of liquid electrolytes due to their much less flammability and leakage. Among them, poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based electrolytes have several advantages including improved processability and electrochemical stability. Unfortunately, poor ionic conductivity and mechanical properties due to high plasticizer concentration hinder their practical applications. Herein, we address these issues by exploiting the solvation effect in the electrolyte through tuning the amount of residual N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and lithium salts. Moreover, by blending with porous carbon (PC) the mechanical integrity of the PVDF-HFP electrolytes is substantially enhanced due to improved interfacial bonding and specific surface area. The appropriate value of electrical conductivity and highly porous morphology of PC also meet the ionic transport and electronic insulation requirements. With the absorbed residual NMP as plasticizer and complexed with Li ions to formLi[NMP](3)(+) , ionic conductivity and amorphicity are improved. By elucidating the solvent and salt concentration interplay, Li-ion conductivity of up to 0.56 mS cm(-,) wide electrochemical window of 5 V versus Li/Li+ and 1000 h of cycling stability (versus Li, 0.2 mA/cm(2)) are obtained. These findings afford a novel electrolyte design guideline for enhancing interfacial compatibility and cycling through hybridization and ion solvation to develop practical lithium batteries.

Abstract:The cross-linked sulfonated polyimide (CSPI-DMDA) membranes with microphase-separated structure are designed and prepared for vanadium flow battery (VFB) application. In main chains of CSPI-DMDA membranes, hydrophobic segment with aliphatic groups as well as hydrophilic segment with aromatic groups promote the formation of microphase-separated structures and thus enhance the ability of proton transfer. Meanwhile, the cross-linked structure in CSPI-DMDA membrane is beneficial to improve the mechanical strength and chemical stability, and decrease the vanadium-ion permeability. The optimized CSPI-DMDA membrane exhibits higher columbic efficiency (CE: 99.2%), voltage efficiency (VE: 76.0%) and energy efficiency (EE: 75.3%) than those of N115 membrane (CE: 96.9%, VE: 73.3%, EE: 71.1%) at a high current density of 200 mA cm(-2). There is no obvious decay in the cycling of the VFB with the CSPI-DMDA (1:1) membrane over 1000 charge-discharge test under 160 mA cm(-2). The VFB also remains stable on a broad temperature (-20 to 60 degrees C). The above results indicate CSPI-DMDA membrane a potential alternative for separator in all-climate VFB applications.

Abstract:Ion exchange membranes (IEMs) blending porous materials have shown great potential for the large-scale energy storage technologies, such as flow battery. However, it remains challenging to overcome the compatibility issue between polymer and porous fillers. In this work, the polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM) was successfully introduced into sulfonated polyether ether ketone with high degree of sulfonation (HDS-SPEEK) membrane. PIM exhibited desirable compatibility with HDS-SPEEK due to the natural polymer property. Meanwhile, the rigid skeleton structure of PIM effectively solved the problems of HDS-SPEEK involving poor mechanical property and low vanadium resistance. With increasing the doping of carboxyl grafting modified PIM, the tensile strength increased from 15.22 to 29.94 MPa and the vanadium permeability declined from 4.4 × 10−6 to 1.6 × 10−7 cm2 min−1. As a result, the vanadium flow battery equipped with the optimized blend membrane showed significantly enhanced coulombic efficiency from 55% to 99% at the current density of 20 mA cm−2, and had good long-term stability. This work presents a new route to prepare high-performance IEMs based on porous PIM materials for flow battery.

Abstract:Membranes with high conductivity, high selectivity, and high stability are urgently needed for high-power-density vanadium flow batteries (VFBs). Enhancing membrane conductivity presents many challenges, often resulting in sacrificing membrane selectivity and mechanical strength. To overcome this, new robust adamantane-based membranes with enhanced conductivity are constructed for VFB. Low-content basic piperazine (IEC = 0.78 mmol g−1) and hydrophilic hydroxyl groups are introduced into highly rigid, hydrophobic adamantane containing poly(aryl ether ketone) backbone (PAPEK) and then selectively swelled to induce microphase separation and form ion transport pathways. The highly rigid and hydrophobic PAPEK exhibits high swelling resistance and provides the membranes with slight swelling, high selectivity, and high mechanical strength. The selective swelling temperature has a significant influence on the areal resistance of the resulting membrane, e.g., the PAPEK-130 membrane, when selectively swelled at 130 °C, has low areal resistance (0.22 Ω∙cm2), which is approximately two-fifths that of the PAEKK-60 membrane (treated at 60 °C, 0.57 Ω∙cm2). Consequently, the resulting PAPEK membranes exhibit low swelling, high selectivity, and low areal resistance, with the VFB constructed with a PAPEK-90 membrane exhibiting excellent energy efficiency (91.7%, at 80 mA∙cm−2, and 80.0% at 240 mA∙cm−2) and stable cycling performance for 2000 cycles.

Abstract:A sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)-based composite membrane (S/SMA-SN) is developed by introducing dual-sulfonated flexible comb-like polymer (SMA-SN), varying from 0.1 to 1.5 wt%, which was prepared from the poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride)-ethylenediamine through a main-/side-chain two-step sulfonation procedure. The S/SMA-SN composite membranes demonstrate ultrahigh proton conductivity and excellent cell performance at ultralow contents of SMA-SN polymers. Synergistic main-/side-chain proton channels formed by SPEEK and SMA-SN offer the highest proton conductivity (49.2 mS cm -1 ) and the lowest vanadium ion permeability (19.6 × 10 -7 cm 2 min -1 ) for S/SMA-SN-0.5, which is superior to SPEEK and Nafion membranes. Moreover, S/SMA-SN-0.5 displays its remarkable energy efficiency (72–81.3%) at 100–200 mA cm -2 current density, further illustrating the tradeoff effect of conductivity and resistance. Even at 150 mA cm -2 current density, stable coulombic efficiency (97%) and energy efficiency (80%) maintained after 500 charge-discharge cycles confirms the stable membrane structure and increased chemical stability, which originated from the main-/side-chain synergistic structure. This opens a promising method to explore the high-performance proton exchange membrane for vanadium flow battery application by the side-chain structuralized comb-like polymer at ultralow concentrations.

Abstract:Non‐fluorinated ion exchange membranes with high proton selectivity and conductivity are sought as separators for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) to substitute the typically used perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) polymer membranes. Polybenzimidazole based membranes offer a promising non‐fluorinated alternative due to their excellent thermomechanical properties, low vanadium crossover, and ionic conductivity in acidic media. In this work, a series of polybenzimidazole‐polyvinylchloride polymer blends were cast and decorated with different quaternary ammonium functionalities. The polymer blends were systematically studied with respect to the blend composition and chemical structure of the quaternary ammonium groups. Assessment of relevant membrane properties for use in an aqueous acidic flow battery was conducted through a combination of VRFB single cell testing, permeability measurements, water/electrolyte uptake, and infrared spectroscopy. The blend with a polybenzimidazole content of 90 % decorated with DABCO (1,4‐diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) was found to combine low polarization resistance with low swelling and high stability. The performance was found to be similar to that of a benchmark polybenzimidazole membrane despite being three times thicker. This led to the conclusion that quaternary ammonium functionalized polybenzimidazole‐polyvinylbenzylchloride systems is an excellent candidate for further modification or fabrication of thinner membranes to further reduce the membrane resistance without compromising on vanadium blocking properties. Nanoscale Solid Superacid-Coupled Polybenzimidazole Membrane with High Ion Selectivity for Flow Batteries

Abstract:Nanoscale solid superacid SO42–/ZrO2/WO3 is coupled into imidazole-hydroxyl-quaternary ammonium co-functionalized polybenzimidazole (PG112) to address the trade-off effect of membrane for large-scale flow battery application. Nanoscale SO42–/ZrO2/WO3 particles with high sulfonic groups are dispersed in membrane as redox-active ion barriers and proton carriers, which mitigate the electrolyte crossover and maintain high ion conductivity. The VO2+ permeability of the prepared membrane (7.86 × 10–10 cm2 s–1) is significantly lower than those of PG112 (3.93 × 10–9 cm2 s–1) and Nafion 212 (7.76 × 10–8 cm2 s–1) membranes. The vanadium flow battery with this membrane exhibits a longer self-discharge duration time of 231 h compared with Nafion 212 (35 h) and PG112 (88 h) membranes. High coulombic efficiencies of 97.5–99.2% at 40–120 mA cm–2 are obtained for the prepared membrane, which are higher than those for Nafion 212 (78.0–92.8%) and PG112 membranes (96.2–98.6%). Stable cycle performance and low retention capacity are also observed, suggesting the excellent chemical stability of the prepared membrane in vanadium flow battery operation. This work provides a prospective and applicable membrane to enhance the performance of flow battery.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Membranes with precise control of selective layer are designed and prepared by adjusting diffusion of solvents. Combining experiments and theoretical calculations, the formation mechanism of ion conductive membranes prepared by a non‐solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method is found to be related to internal diffusion flux of solvent to the non‐solvent bath and external diffusion flux of non‐solvent to the casting solution. By regulating the internal and external diffusion rates via a two‐step NIPS method, a series of polybenzimidazole (PBI) porous membranes with independently controlled thin selective skin layers and highly porous support layers are fabricated, which achieve a simultaneous improvement in ion selectivity and proton conductivity. A vanadium flow battery assembled with a PBI membrane demonstrates an energy efficiency of 80% at a current density of 220 mA cm−2, which is the highest value among the reported PBI membranes. This provides a simple and effective way to fabricate membranes with well‐defined morphologies.
Low Vanadium Permeability Membranes Based on Flexible Hydrophilic Side Chain Grafted Polybenzimidazole/Polymeric Ionic Liquid for VRFBs

Abstract:Based on amino polybenzimidazoles with flexible hydrophilic side chains (AmPBI-MOE) and polymeric ionic liquid (PIL), a series of composite membranes (AmPBI-MOE-PIL-X) were fabricated for vanadium redox flow battery applications. Here, 1-Bromo-2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethane was grafted onto amino polybenzimidazole (AmPBI) by the method of halogenated hydrocarbons, and PIL was synthesized from ionic liquids by in situ radical polymerization to build a hydrogen-bonded cross-linked network within the film. The hydrophilic side chain improves the proton conductivity. With the increase in ionic liquids, the vanadium transmittance and the proton conductivity increase. The AmPBI-MOE-PIL-5 membrane not only exhibits a vanadium ions permeability of 0.88 × 10−9 cm2 min−1, which is much lower than Nafion117 (6.07 × 10−8 cm2 min−1), but also shows a very excellent blocking ability for vanadium ion. The AmPBI-MOE-PIL-5 membrane shows excellent performances at 60 mA cm−2, with VE of 87.93% and EE of 82.87%, both higher than that of Nafion117 membrane in VRFB.

Abstract:Developing cheap and durable proton exchange membrane is crucial to promote the practical application of vanadium flow batteries (VFB). Here we report a simple and scalable method to fabricate a reinforced sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membrane using a lithium-ion battery separator, ceramic-coated porous polyethylene (CCP), as a robust scaffold. With the confinement effect of the extremely stable CCP substrate, the reinforced SPEEK membrane (S@CCP) shows significantly improved chemical/mechanical stability and reduced vanadium ion permeability compared to the control SPEEK membrane. Accordingly, the S@CCP membrane demonstrates excellent rate performance and cycling stability than those of the benchmark Nafion 212 membrane. It exhibits stable performance over 1500 cycles at 160 mA cm(-2) with 99% of CE, 76% of EE and 0.126% of capacity decay per cycle. Meanwhile, the S@CCP membrane is highly resistant to temperature fluctuations over a wide range of -20-60 degrees C. The superior durability, wide temperature adaptability, and low cost suggest that the S@CCP membrane offers great promise as an ideal membrane for VFB application.
A novel imidazolium-based amphoteric membrane for high-performance vanadium redox flow battery

Abstract:A novel amphoteric membrane was prepared using imidazolium-functionalized polysulfone (ImPSf) as the base polymer and sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) as the acid polymer for vanadium flow battery applications. The introduction of the ImPSf effectively resists the migration of vanadium ions owing to the Donnan repelling effect of the imidazolium cations on the vanadium ions and the low swelling ratio of the amphoteric membranes due to the ionic cross-linked interactions between the imidazolium and sulfonic groups. The amphoteric membrane with an ImPSf mass ratio of 17% shows a vanadium permeability of 1.5 × 10−8cm2s−1 that is much lower than that of Nafion212 (21 × 10−8cm2s−1). Having a high IEC of 2.04mmolg−1, it also exhibits a low area resistance of 0.48Ωcm−2 that is comparable to that of Nafion212 membrane (0.41Ωcm−2). As a result, the VFB cell with the amphoteric membrane exhibits high performances even at high current densities, i.e. at a current density of 200mAcm−2, and the amphoteric membrane achieves a coulombic efficiency of 97.5% and an energy efficiency of 77.3%, both of which are higher than those of Nafion212 (92.4% and 73.4%). These results indicate that the ImPSf/SPEEK amphoteric membrane is promising for VFB applications.
Swelling-Induced Cross-Linked Pyridine-Containing Membranes with High Stability and Conductivity for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

Abstract:Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) have many advantages in overcoming the volatility of renewable energy. However, membranes, one of the key materials for VRFB, face crucial challenges, for example, membranes with high conductivity tend to exhibit high swelling, low selectivity, and poor mechanical stability. In this work, new cross-linked membranes (C-PyPEKK) were prepared by blending a novel chloromethylated adamantane-containing polymer (CAPEK) (with a bulky, rigid, twisted backbone) with a unique pyridine-containing polymer (PyPEKK). The synergistic effect of cross-linked structures and bulky, rigidly twisted adamantane-containing backbone gives the membrane excellent membrane swelling resistance and selectivity. C-PyPEKK membranes were selectively swelled and formed wide ion transport channels, enhancing conductivity. The resulting C-PyPEKK membranes exhibited low water uptake (<8.0%), a low swelling ratio (<13.0%) (the uncross-linked PyPEKK membrane showed a high swelling ratio of 28.6%), and high mechanical strength (about 60 MPa). The C-PyPEKK-130 membrane showed a superior conductivity of 52.83 mS cm–1 and outstanding energy efficiencies (EEs) (90.75% at 80 mA cm–2; 79.4% at 300 mA cm–2), which was superior to the Nafion212 membrane (EE = 81.87%, 80 mA cm–2; 75.48%, 300 mA cm–2). The C-PyPEKK membranes showed high cycling stability (3500 cycles) in VRFB. Moreover, the C-PyPEKK membranes were robust and showed good battery performance after being immersed in strongly acidic and oxidizing 1.5 M VO2 + in 3 M H2SO4 solutions for 9 months, showing excellent chemical stability. This work proposes a new preparation route for membranes with high conductivity, high stability, and excellent mechanical strength for potential VRFB applications from unique new membrane materials combined with cross-linked membrane structures and unique conduction enhancement strategies.
