First-principles structural design of superhard material of ZrB4

Abstract:Using the first-principles calypso algorithm for crystal structure prediction, we have predicted two orthorhombic Cmcm and Amm2 structures of ZrB4, which are energetically much superior to the previously proposed WB4-, CrB4-, and MoB4-type structures and stable against decompression into a mixture of Zr and B at ambient pressure. The two orthorhombic structures consist of a hexagonal B ring and ZrB12 units connected by edges and one hexagonal B ring in Cmcm and Amm2 structure, respectively. The calculated large shear modulus (e.g., 229 GPa) and high hardness (42.8 GPa for Cmcm and 42.6 GPa for Amm2) reveal that they are potentially superhard materials. The high hardness is attributed to a stacking of B-Zr-B "sandwiches" layers linked by strong covalent B-B bonding.

Abstract:Intrinsic isotropic near-zero thermal expansion is discovered in borate crystal Zn4B6O13 with high transparency in the ultraviolet region. First-principles calculations demonstrate that the very low thermal expansion originates mainly from the invariability of the solid [B24O48] truncated octahedra that are fixed by the [Zn4O13] clusters in the ZBO structure.

Abstract:We have performed in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and first-principles calculations to explore the compression behavior of barium hexaboride (BaB6) under high pressure. No phase transitions in our experiment are observed up to 49.3 GPa at ambient temperature. It is found that the ambient cage structure (Pm (3) over barm) is still stable with a basic covalent network during the experimental pressure run. The results of our theoretical calculations show that the ambient structure might transform into three dynamically stable structures (Cmmm, Cmcm and I4/mmm) at 78 GPa, 97 GPa and 105 GPa respectively. The energy band calculations indicate that the sample is still a semiconductor with a narrow gap at 50 GPa.

Abstract:The design and fabrication of novel hard materials with excellent electrical conductivity is attractive in scientific and technological application under extreme conditions. Metal borides have brought substantial interest for decades in material science because of their strong covalent BB bonding network for intrinsic incompressibility and MM bonding for electron transportation. Here the successful synthesis of a novel hard alkali metal boride as NaB4 with high thermal stability (873 K) and metallic behaviors is reported. The relatively low synthetic P/T conditions (lowest at 1.5 GPa and 1000 K) enable the easy fabrication of large bulk materials (several centimeters in diameter). The studies reveal that the Vickers hardness value of NaB4 can reach up to 26 GPa, associated with superior incompressibility along (001) direction of honeycomb‐like boron structure that exhibits the highest shear modulus up to 96 GPa for borides. The NaB4 structure undergoes an interesting metallic‐semiconducting transition under compression up to 61 GPa. This new form of hard metal boride material with pressure‐tunable electrical properties enables the development of industrial applications as future electrical devices.

Abstract:The structural stability, electronic structure, and superconductivity of cubic sodium hexaboride NaB6 are calculated from first principles using density functional theory (DFT). The calculations of phonon dispersion spectra, formation energy, and elastic constants indicate that the cubic NaB6 is dynamically, thermodynamically, and mechanically stable, respectively. The cubic NaB6 has lower formation energy compared with the experimentally synthesized KB6. The calculated band structure and PDOS demonstrate the metallicity of NaB6. The superconducting transition temperatures at ambient pressure for NaB6 and KB6 are predicted to be 15.7 K with lambda= 0.60 and 14.6 K with lambda= 0.57, respectively.

Abstract:Lightweight strong boron-carbon clathrates adopting sodalite structure have been inspirated by the successful synthesis of the SrB3C3 compounds, which assuming the cubic bipartite sodalite structure. In this work, we designed series of stoichiometric LiBxC(12-x) and Li(2)BxC(12-x) (x = 1-6) compounds based on boron substitution of carbon in carbon sodalite structure using first-principles calculations. We found that LiB2C10, LiB3C9, LiB4C8, Li2B3C9 and Li2B4C8 are dynamically stable at high pressure and can be recovered under normal pressure. Strikingly, compared with inserting one Li atom into the B-C framework, inserting two Li atoms exhibit lower enthalpy value and better symmetry. Li2B4C8 is identified as the most stable structure among these compounds, and Li2B4C8 could potentially be synthesized at moderate pressure. The electron localization function calculations reveal that there is a strong covalent bond between B and C atoms in the clathrates, which forming the rigid three -dimensional crystalline networks. Moreover, the estimated Vickers hardness values of these five stable clathrates are 42 similar to 51 GPa, which can be classified as superhard materials. At the same time, the pure shear strength of LiB2C10 is found to be 48.1 GPa, which exceeds the threshold value of 40 GPa. The pure shear strength of LiB3C9 (38.0 GPa) and Li2B3C9 (38.8 GPa) are found to be close to 40 GPa. Our work presents a new strategy for exploring superhard sodalite-like clathrate candidates.

Abstract:ZrB12 , with a high symmetrical cubic structure, possesses both high hardness ≈27.0 GPa and ultralow electrical resistivity ≈18 µΩ cm at room temperature. Both the superior conductivity and hardness of ZrB12 are associated with the extended BB 3D covalent bonding network as it is not only favorable for achieving high hardness, but also provides conducting channels for transporting electrons.

Abstract:The clear proof of superconductivity in transition-metal diborides was rarely reported. In the current work, the recently developed particle swarm optimization structural search method was utilized to propose three ZrB2 structures, namely, I41/amd-ZrB2, P42/mmc-ZrB2, and P4/nmm-ZrB2. The structural stability of the three novel ZrB2 phases was confirmed on the basis of elastic constant and phonon dispersion calculations. At ambient pressure, the mechanical properties of the I41/amd-ZrB2 and P42/mmc-ZrB2 phases are comparable to those of AlB2–ZrB2. Electron–phonon coupling (EPC) calculations revealed that the P4/nmm-ZrB2 phase is predicted to be a potential high-Tc superconductor with a calculated Tc of 12.7 K at 20GPa. Moreover, significant pressure-induced EPC enhancement can also be found in the P4/nmm-ZrB2 phase. The maximum EPC constant λ and Tc under 600GPa are 1.05 and 34.4 K, respectively.

Abstract:Boron-rich tungsten borides tend to adopt mechanically unfavorable layered structures but experimentally exhibit excellent mechanical properties rivalling traditional superhard solids. Unravelling the contraindicated structure-property relationship, however, has been impeded by their structural ambiguities because of the difficulty in probing boron and atomic deficiency of these borides. Here, we study crystal structures of boron-rich tungsten borides WB3+x and WB2+x by neutron diffraction based on high-quality samples prepared by a high-pressure method, leading to definitive structural resolutions for both borides with unique compositions of WB5.14 and WB2.34. Combined with theoretical calculations, their structural stability is revealed to be closely related to atomic deficiency, which is governed by the valence-band filling with an optimal valence-electron concentration of ∼10 per cell. The presence of interstitial boron trimers at the vacant W:2b sites in WB5.14 alters the crystal symmetry, making the Wyckoff 2d site more favorably occupied by W, rather than the 2c site, as previously misassigned. The staggered planar boron layers and wrinkled boron bonding in WB2.34 are identified to be crucial for stabilizing its structure. These findings unveil the longstanding structural mysteries of boron-rich tungsten borides and offer powerful insights for rational design of borides by defect chemistry.

Abstract:Yb26B12O57, a rare earth oxyborate previously assigned as Yb3BO6, has been studied by various techniques including neutron and X-ray diffraction, 11B NMR spectroscopy, electron diffraction and high angle angular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy (HADDF-STEM). It crystallizes in the space group C2/m with cell parameters of a=24.5780(4)Å, b=3.58372(5)Å, c=14.3128(3)Å and β=115.079(1)°. The structure consists of slabs of rare earth sesquioxide and borate groups. The sesquioxide part is identified from the structural refinement, and is observed from HADDF-STEM image, while elucidation of borate groups is not straightforward. An additional oxygen atom (O31), which links two B2O5 groups into a B4O11 polyanion, is identified from the analysis of neutron diffraction data. The occupancy of this oxygen site is only quarter, which results in a random distribution of B4O11 and B2O5 groups along the b-direction. The chemical formula of ytterbium oxyborate is Yb26(BO3)4(B2O5)2(B4O11)O24, instead of the simple stoichiometric formula Yb3BO6. This compound is paramagnetic but its susceptibility deviated from the Curie–Weiss law at low temperature.

Abstract:Recently, heteroanionic materials are drawing wide attention due to their unique crystal structures which result in fascinating physical properties. However, structural exploration and functional application of lone-pair-cation-based oxychalcogenides are still very rare. In this work, a new Sb-based oxysulfide, Ba6Sb6O2S13, was successfully discovered via the high-temperature solid-phase method. Ba6Sb6O2S13 belongs to the monoclinic space group of P21/c (no. 14), and and is formed by charge-balanced Ba2+ cations and zero-dimensional (0D) [Sb6O2S13]12– finite chains made of the triangular-pyramid [SbOS2], quadrangular-pyramid [SbOS3] and teeter-totter [SbS4] units by sharing vertices. Note that the coexistence of various Sb-coordinated fashions in one material is surprisingly found for the first time. More encouragingly, such unique 0D structure in Ba6Sb6O2S13leads to an ultra-low thermal conductivity of ∼0.25 W/m·K at 700 K (one of the lowest values seen in a crystalline material) and a giant birefringence of 0.66 at 2050 nm (the highest value among metal chalcogenides reported thus far), which is further confirmed using theoretical calculations. As a result, this work will inspire an intriguing and further research in heteroanionic materials with low-dimensional structures and hold great potential for the utilization in photothermal fields.

Abstract:A new mixed-metal polyborate, Na5Li[B12O18(OH)(6)]center dot 2H(2)O (1), has been synthesized using solvothermal method and characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, UVeVis spectroscopy, powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, respectively. It crystallizes in the trigonal space group R-3c (No. 167) with unit cell parameters of a = b = 9.6767(6) angstrom, c = 36.358(5) angstrom, and Z = 6. Its structure features unprecedented 3D framework constructed from novel honeycomb-shaped inorganic Na-O sheets with unique 12-MR sodium rings and supramolecular polyborate 2D layers of lithium-centered [B12O18(OH)(6)](6-). Abstract:High-aspect-ratio ZrB2 rod crystals were synthesized via a molten-salt-mediated boro/carbothermal reduction using ZrOCl2 ∙ 8H2O/B4C/C as the raw material and NaCl as the flux material. This synthesis may improve the poor fracture toughness of monolithic ZrB2 ceramics. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy confirmed that the heat-treatment temperature of 1550 °C and the addition of 50 wt.% NaCl were the most effective in the preparation of ZrB2 grains with a high aspect ratio. Thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry was used to study the influence of NaCl addition, which increased the liquid-phase content. Finally, the growth of ZrB2 grains along the c-axis into rod-like morphology at elevated temperatures was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. This work revealed that the addition of NaCl has a positive effect on the reducing of synthesis temperature and increasing of products particle size. The ZrB2 rod crystals synthesized have diameters and aspect ratios of approximately 1 μm and 30, respectively.

Abstract:Crystals of cadmium zinc diborate, Cd1.17Zn0.83B2O5, have been obtained by spontaneous nucleation in a platinum crucible at 1072 K. The crystal structure exhibits diborate groups, B2O54-, sharing O atoms with considerably distorted M1O(6) octahedra and M2O(4) tetrahedra. Both metal centers are disordered in the proportion Cd: Zn = 0.92: 0.08 on the M1 site and Cd:Zn = 0.25:0.75 on the M2 site. A strong second-harmonic generation has been observed for the title compound when excited with an Nd:YAG laser (lambda = 1064 nm).
