Abstract:We report superior terahertz parametric generation from potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) over congruent-grown lithium niobate (CLN) and lithium tantalate (CLT) in terms of parametric gain and laser damage resistance. Under the same pump and crystal configurations, the signal emerged first from KTP, 5% Mg-doped CLN, CLN, and then finally from CLT. The signal growth rate in KTP was comparable to that in 5%-Mg-doped CLN, but the signal power from KTP reached a much higher value after all the other crystals were damaged by the pump laser. We further demonstrate seeded terahertz parametric amplification in an edge-cut KTP at 5.74 THz. The THz parametric amplifier (TPA) employs a 17-mm long KTP gain crystal, pumped by a passively Q-switched pump laser at 1064 nm and seeded by a continuous-wave diode laser tuned to the signal wavelength at 1086.2 nm. With 5.8-mJ energy in a 520-ps pump pulse and 100-mW seed signal power, we measured 5-W peak-power THz output from the KTP TPA with 22% pump depletion. In comparison, we measured no detectable THz output power from a similar edge-cut CLN TPA under the same pump power, detection scheme, and crystal configuration, when tuning the seed laser wavelength to 1072.2 nm and attempting to generate a radiation at 2.1 THz.

Abstract:KTiOPO₄ (KTP) crystal is used as the nonlinear medium in a surface-emitted terahertz-wave parametric oscillator for the first time. The oscillating Stokes beam propagates along the x axis of the KTP crystal, the pumping beam propagates with a small incident angle θ(ext) to the x axis, and the polarizations of the pumping beam, the Stokes beam, and the THz wave are along the z axis. When θ(ext) is changed from 1.250° to 6.000°, the THz wave is intermittently tuned from 3.17 to 3.44 THz, from 4.19 to 5.19 THz, and from 5.55 to 6.13 THz. The maximum output of the THz wave is 336 nJ, obtained at 5.72 THz with a pumping energy of 80 mJ. The two frequency gaps, from 3.44 to 4.19 THz and from 5.19 to 5.55 THz, are located in the vicinities of the A₁ modes of 134 and 178.7 cm⁻¹, which are strongly infrared absorbing.

Abstract:A high repetition rate, high power, and widely tunable THz parametric amplifier (TPA) with a KTiOPO4 crystal has been demonstrated in this work. A peak power of 1.7 kW and an average power of 89 μW have been obtained at a frequency of 5.74 THz and a repetition rate of 10 kHz. The radiation is expected to be Fourier transform limited, with a pulse duration (full width at half maximum, FWHM) of 5.4 ps and a bandwidth (FWHM) of 81 GHz, and has an M2 parameter close to the pump laser. We have also tested the TPA at a repetition rate of 100 kHz, and the results indicate that mW-level (average power) THz radiation output is feasible with a stronger pump laser that is commercially available.
Continuously Tunable and Energy-Enhanced Injection Pulse-Seeded Terahertz Parametric Generator Based on KTP Crystal

Abstract:A continuously tunable, energy-enhanced injection, pulse-seeded THz parametric generator based on a KTP crystal (KTP ips-TPG) has been demonstrated in this paper. Theoretical analysis denotes that improving the initial Stokes intensity is favorable to achieve a continuously tunable, high-energy THz generation in a KTP crystal, which is clarified to originate from the enhancement of stimulated polariton scattering (SPS) process in the photon-like region of polariton and parametric amplification process in the phonon-like region of polariton. In the experiment, the THz continuously tunable range was from 2.93 to 6.21 THz, and the THz energies were 6.27, 2.62, 5.43, 4.59, and 5.88 μJ at the output peaks of 3.33, 3.83, 4.41, 4.85, and 5.69 THz, respectively. Compared with the traditional KTP THz parametric oscillator (KTP TPO) with discontinuous frequency tuning, the KTP ips-TPG has great improvement in terms of continuous frequency tuning range and THz output energy, where the enhancement ratios of THz output energy were 6.88× at 3.36 THz, 5.25× at 4.35 THz, 18.21× at 4.79 THz, and 1.82× at 5.69 THz. This injection pulse-seeded THz parametric source based on a KTP crystal is not only suitable to the practical applications in THz high frequency range, but also provides a technical solution for the KTP-family crystals to achieve a continuously tunable and high energy THz generation in a wide THz region.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Novel Terahertz Optical Switch Based on PIT Phenomenon and Lorentz Theory

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a structure consisting of graphene rings and square rings that enables broadband and tunable plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) effects. Through coupled Lorentz model analysis, we attribute the transmission window at 2.1 THz to the interference between the equipartitioned exciton resonance of the graphene ring pairs and the inductive-capacitive resonance of the graphene square ring pairs. We also investigate the effect of the variation of the rotation angle of the internal graphene square ring pair on the transmission characteristics. The structure not only achieves a maximum modulation depth (MDA) of 91%, insertion loss (IL) and extinction ratio (ER) of 0.3 dB and 10.94 dB, respectively, but also achieves a maximum detection sensitivity of 0.96 THz/refractive index unit (RIU). In contrast, this study achieves more than 90% modulation amplitude in the range of 0.3 THz with a simple design structure, providing new insights for research and applications in related fields.

Abstract:Lithium niobate is the most popular material for terahertz wave generation via stimulated polariton scattering (SPS), previously known to have a gain peak near 2 THz. Here we report the discovery of another phase-matched gain peak near 4 THz in lithium niobate, which greatly extends the useful gain spectrum of lithium niobate. Despite the relatively high 4 THz absorption in lithium niobate, the 4 THz SPS becomes dominant over the 2 THz one in an intensely pumped short lithium niobate crystal due to less diffraction-induced absorption and mode-area mismatch. We also demonstrate a signal-seeded OTPO that generates 1.4 nJ at 4.2 THz from lithium niobate with 17.5 mJ pump energy.

Abstract:Strongly enhanced backward stimulated polariton scattering (BSPS) is demonstrated in periodically-poled KTiOPO4 (KTP) crystals with a high power-conversion efficiency up to 70%. We study the physical mechanism of such counter-propagating parametric interaction with phonon-polaritons in χ(2) modulated structures. BSPS is a three-wave mixing that is distinguished from backward stimulated Raman scattering (BSRS), while a strong absorption at large polariton wave-vectors can still make BSPS display certain characteristics of BSRS such as self-compression of the Stokes pulse. We also compare BSPS with counter-propagating parametric oscillation in the near- and mid-infrared range, providing an estimation of the fabrication error margin to expect the outcome of their competition in the same device.
Strong terahertz radiation via rapid polarization reduction in photoinduced ionic-to-neutral transition of tetrathiafulvalene-p-chloranil

Abstract:Terahertz lights are usually generated through the optical rectification process within a femtosecond laser pulse in non-centrosymmetric materials. Here, we report a new generation mechanism of terahertz lights based upon a photoinduced phase transition (PIPT), in which an electronic structure is rapidly changed by a photoirradiation. When a ferroelectric organic molecular compound, tetrathiafulvalene-p-chloranil, is excited by a femtosecond laser pulse, the ionic-to-neutral transition is driven and simultaneously a strong terahertz radiation is produced. By analyzing the terahertz electric-field waveforms and their dependence on the polarization direction of the incident laser pulse, we demonstrate that the terahertz radiation originates from the ultrafast decrease of the spontaneous polarization in the photoinduced ionic-to-neutral transition. The efficiency of the observed terahertz radiation via the PIPT mechanism is found to be much higher than that via the optical rectification in the same material and in a typical terahertz emitter, ZnTe.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic scheme based on frequency doubling and photo-mixing to generate dual-chirp signals in the terahertz (THz) band. A broadband dual-chirp THz signal with 28 GHz bandwidth, ranging from 364 GHz to 392 GHz, is successfully generated in the proof-of-concept experiment, resulting in a chirp rate of 0.028 GHz/ns for both up chirp and down chirp signals. THz dual-chirp signals featuring a large bandwidth are beneficial to enable high resolution and high accuracy by mitigating the range measurement error induced by the range-Doppler coupling effect. Therefore, the proposed system is expected to have a great potential for future THz radar applications.
Temporal-Spatial Manipulation of Bi-Focal Bi-Chromatic Fields for Terahertz Radiations

Abstract:Mixing the fundamental ($\omega$) and the second harmonic (2$\omega$) waves in gas phase is a widely employed technique for emitting terahertz (THz) pulses. The THz generation driven by bi-chromatic fields can be described by the photocurrent model, where the THz generation is attributed to free electrons ionized by the $\omega$ field, and the 2$\omega$ field provides a perturbation to break the symmetry of the asymptotic momentum of free electrons. However, we find that the THz radiation is amplified by one order of magnitude when driven by bi-focal bi-chromatic fields, contradicting the common understanding of the photocurrent model. Meanwhile, present measurements demonstrate that the THz radiation mainly originates from the plasma created by the 2$\omega$ pulses instead of the $\omega$ pulses. Energy transfer from the 2$\omega$ beam to the THz beam during the THz generation has been observed, validating the major contribution of the 2$\omega$ beam. Furthermore, the THz bandwidth has been observed to extensively exceed the bandwidth of the pump pulse, not be explained by the photocurrent model as well. These counterintuitive results indicate that undiscovered physical mechanisms are involved in bi-chromatic THz generation in plasma, presenting a significant challenge for understanding strong-field nonlinear optics and simultaneously expanding various applications.

Abstract:Injection-seeded terahertz (THz)-wave parametric generation (is-TPG) using a nonlinear optical crystal of MgO-doped lithium niobate (MgO:LiNbO3) has made it possible to obtain THz waves with high peak powers and narrow linewidths. To achieve stable THz-wave generation from the MgO:LiNbO3 crystal under strong excitation, the photorefractive effect in the MgO:LiNbO3 crystal would be crucial, which could be eliminated by using a longer pump wavelength than the conventional 1-μm spectral band. Here, we propose to use a 1.5-μm near-infrared (NIR), high-repetition-rate, sub-nanosecond laser source based on a unique Er,Yb:glass planar waveguide amplifier (PWA) as the pump source for the is-TPG using the MgO:LiNbO3 crystal. At a repetition rate of 25 kHz, the frequency tunability from 1.3 to 2.5 THz was obtained with a maximum THz-wave average output power of 0.14 mW at 1.77 THz.

High power single crystal KTA optical parametric amplifier for efficient 1.4-3.5 $μ$m mid-IR radiation generation

Abstract:In this paper, we present a single crystal, KTA (potassium titanyl-arsenate, KTiOAsO$_4$) based picosecond optical parametric amplifier pumped by an in-house built 1030 nm Yb:YAG thin-disk laser, capable of tunability from 1.46 to 3.5 $\mu$m, operating at 90 kHz, with high average power in the signal and idler beams. The highest output power of 8.9 W was reached for the 1750 nm signal beam with 19% conversion efficiency and the respective 2500 nm idler beam power was 6.2 W with 13% efficiency. The highest combined signal and idler mid-IR power was obtained at 17 W at the 2060 nm wavelength degeneracy point.

Abstract:A wide-bandwidth and low-noise amplification chain in the microwave regime is crucial for the efficient read-out of quantum systems based on superconducting detectors, such as Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs), Transition Edge Sensors (TESs), Magnetic Microcalorimeters (MMCs), and RF cavities, as well as qubits. Kinetic Inductance Travelling Wave Parametric Amplifiers (KI-TWPAs) operated in a three-wave mixing fashion have demonstrated exceptional dynamic range and low-noise performance, approaching the quantum limit. These amplifiers can be fabricated using a single layer of a high kinetic inductance film as weakly dispersive artificial transmission lines, with the ability to control the phase-matched bandwidth through dispersion engineering. In this study, we present the optimisation of the rf sputter-deposition process of NbTiN films using a Nb80%T20 target, with the goal of achieving precise control over film characteristics, resulting in high kinetic inductance while maintaining a high transition temperature. The parameter landscape related to the different sputtering conditions, such as pressure, power, and nitrogen flow, has been explored and the film thickness has been used as a fine-tuning parameter to adjust the properties of the final NbTiN films used for the fabrication of KI-TWPAs. As a final result, we have obtained a NbTiN film with a kinetic inductance of 8.5 pH/sq which we have exploited to fabricate KI-TWPA prototype devices, showing promising amplification performance.

Enhancing terahertz generation from a two-color plasma using optical parametric amplifier waste light

Abstract:We show experimentally that the terahertz (THz) emission of a plasma, generated in air by a two-color laser pulse (containing a near IR frequency and its second harmonic), can be enhanced by the addition of an 800-nm pulse. We observed enhancements of the THz electric field by a factor of up to 30. This provides a widely accessible means for researchers using optical parametric amplifiers (OPA) to increase their THz yields by simply adding the residual pump beam of the OPA to the plasma generating beam. We investigate the dependence of the THz electric field enhancement factor on the powers of the two-color beam as well as the 800-nm enhancement beam. Numerical calculations using the well-known photocurrent model are in excellent agreement with the experimental observations.

Tilted-pulse-front schemes for terahertz generation

Abstract:High energy single- to few-cycle terahertz pulses enable the exploration of the frontier of science, such as electron acceleration, strong-field physics, and spectroscopy. One important method of generating such terahertz pulses is to use the tilted-pulse-front (TPF) technique. However, due to the non-collinear phase-matching, the large angular dispersion leads to a spatial and temporal break-up of the optical pump, limiting the terahertz generation efficiency and reducing the few-cycle character of the generated terahertz fields. To reduce the effects caused by angular dispersion, multiple schemes with discrete pulse-front-tilt have been suggested. We propose a terahertz generation scheme, where a spatio-temporally chirped (STC) pump pulse is utilized. With our 2D+1 numerical model, we perform a systematic comparative study of the conventional TPF scheme, three discrete TPF schemes, and the STC scheme. This model predicts smaller optimal interaction length and significantly smaller conversion efficiency compared to simple 1D models. We conclude that the STC scheme delivers spatially homogeneous few-cycle terahertz pulses with the highest conversion efficiency. Additionally, given a short interaction length, the discrete TPF schemes cannot outperform the continuous ones. In general, this work gives guidance to choose the most appropriate setup for a given terahertz experiment

A Near Quantum Limited Sub-GHz TiN Kinetic Inductance Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifier Operating in a Frequency Translating Mode

Abstract:We present the design and experimental characterization of a kinetic-inductance traveling-wave parametric amplifier (KI-TWPA) for sub-GHz frequencies. KI-TWPAs amplify signals through nonlinear mixing processes supported by the nonlinear kinetic inductance of a superconducting transmission line. The device described here utilizes a compactly meandered TiN microstrip transmission line to achieve the length needed to amplify sub-GHz signals. It is operated in a frequency translating mode where the amplified signal tone is terminated at the output of the amplifier, and the idler tone at approximately 2.5~GHz is brought out of the cryostat. By varying the pump frequency, a gain of up to 22 dB was achieved in a tunable range from about 450 to 850~MHz. Use of TiN as the nonlinear element allows for a reduction of the required pump power by roughly an order of magnitude relative to NbTiN, which has been used for previous KI-TWPA implementations. This amplifier has the potential to enable high-sensitivity and high-speed measurements in a wide range of applications, such as quantum computing, astrophysics, and dark matter detection.

Abstract:Radially polarized X-shaped terahertz (THz) pulses (RPXTPs) have unique properties such as spatio-temporal localization, self-reconstruction, nondispersion, and superluminality, making them attractive for various applications. However, the direct generation of RPXTPs is a challenging task that has not yet been achieved. We propose a set of easily implementable schemes to directly generate RPXTPs using either a pencil beam or a ring beam of electrons to drive a modified axicon. Cherenkov radiation is excited in the modified axicon in the THz region and then focused in the forward region, allowing direct generation of RPXTPs. We demonstrate the generation of single-cycle broadband RPXTPs with tunable spectral range, focusing depth, and pulse intensity. The field strength reaches tens of MV/m, much higher than that obtained by most available indirect methods. This high-intensity RPXTP has potential applications in THz spectroscopy, THz imaging, light–matter interactions, and THz-driven particle accelerators.

Abstract:Enhanced terahertz wave generation via Stokes cascaded process has been demonstrated using a picosecond pulse pumped terahertz parametric generation at 1 kHz repetition rate. Clear cascade-saturation of terahertz output was observed, and the corresponded cascade-Stokes spectra were analyzed. The maximum terahertz wave average power was 22 μW under the pump power of 30 W, whereas the maximum power conversion efficiency was 8×10 -7 under the pump power of 21 W. The THz power fluctuation was measured to be about 1% in 20 min. This THz parametric source with a relative stable output is suitable for a variety of practical applications.
