Abstract:Optically active phonon modes in ferroelectrics such as potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) and potassium titanyl arsenate (KTA) in the ~7-20 THz range play an important role in applications of these materials in Raman lasing and terahertz wave generation. Previous studies with picosecond pulse excitation demonstrated that the interaction of pump pulses with phonons can lead to efficient stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) accompanying optical parametric oscillation or amplification processes (OPO/OPA), and to efficient polariton-phonon scattering. In this work, we investigate the behavior of infrared OPAs employing KTP or KTA crystals when pumped with ~800-nm ultrashort pulses of duration comparable to the oscillation period of the optical phonons. We demonstrate that under conditions of coherent impulsive Raman excitation of the phonons, when the effective χ((2)) nonlinearity cannot be considered instantaneous, the parametrically amplified waves (most notably, signal) undergo significant spectral modulations leading to an overall redshift of the OPA output. The pump intensity dependence of the redshifted OPA output, the temporal evolution of the parametric gain, as well as the pump spectral modulations suggest the presence of coupling between the nonlinear optical polarizations P(NL) of the impulsively excited phonons and those of parametrically amplified waves.

Abstract:Coexistent optical parametric oscillation (OPO) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) are demonstrated in an X-cut KTiOAsO(4) (KTA) crystal. The 30-mm-long KTA crystal is placed within a diode-end-pumped acousto-optically (AO) Q-switched Nd:YAG laser cavity to construct an intracavity optical parametric oscillator. Coexistent Raman conversion of the fundamental wave is observed from the KTA crystal. With a diode power of 7.43 W and a pulse repetition rate (PRR) of 20 kHz, a signal (1535.0 nm) power of 0.92 W is obtained, corresponding to a diode-tosignal conversion efficiency of 12.4%. A first-Stokes (1091.4 nm) power of 0.17 W is obtained.

Abstract:Potassium Titanium Oxide Phosphate (KTP) is a new nonlinear frequency-conversion crystal. It has high nonlinear coefficient, high damage threshold, easily-polished surface, and a broad transparency range. In this paper, the calculation method of angle phase-matching for parametric generation in KTP was presented. The angle phase-matching curve and their characteristics in KTP pumped by 532 nm, 694.3 nm radiation were calculated and analyzed. The propagating principal plane (x-y plane) and 56 degree(s) cut angle to z-axis were selected in our experiment, and the measured results agreed well with the calculated ones. The quality of laser beam is an important factor of affecting OPO threshold fluence and conversion efficiency, so the phase-conjugate technology of Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) for improving the pump laser beam quality was discussed and applied to the pump laser system. The tuning curves and output energy of KTP OPO pumped by Ruby laser (0.6943 micrometers ), the second harmonic of Nd:YAG (0.532 micrometers ) were measured and compared with the theoretical cases. An important result was obtained that the amplified back SBS light which was employed to pump KTP OPO could greatly reduce the OPO threshold.
Observation of triply coincident nonlinearities in periodically poled KTiOPO4

Abstract:We report the simultaneous quasi-phase-matching of all three possible nonlinearities for propagation along the X axis of periodocally poled (PP) KTiOPO4 (KTP) for second-harmonic generation of 745 nm pulsed light from 1490nm subpicosecond pulses in a PPKTP crystal with a 45.65 micrometer poling period. This confirms the recent Sellmeier fits of KTP by K. Kato and E. Takaoka [Appl. Opt. 41, 5040 (2002)]. Such coincident nonlinearities are of importance for realizing compact sources of multipartite continuous-variable entanglement [Pfister et al., Phys. Rev. A 70, 020302 (2004)] and we propose a new simpler method for entangling four fields, based on this triple coincidence.

Abstract:A continuously tunable, energy-enhanced injection, pulse-seeded THz parametric generator based on a KTP crystal (KTP ips-TPG) has been demonstrated in this paper. Theoretical analysis denotes that improving the initial Stokes intensity is favorable to achieve a continuously tunable, high-energy THz generation in a KTP crystal, which is clarified to originate from the enhancement of stimulated polariton scattering (SPS) process in the photon-like region of polariton and parametric amplification process in the phonon-like region of polariton. In the experiment, the THz continuously tunable range was from 2.93 to 6.21 THz, and the THz energies were 6.27, 2.62, 5.43, 4.59, and 5.88 μJ at the output peaks of 3.33, 3.83, 4.41, 4.85, and 5.69 THz, respectively. Compared with the traditional KTP THz parametric oscillator (KTP TPO) with discontinuous frequency tuning, the KTP ips-TPG has great improvement in terms of continuous frequency tuning range and THz output energy, where the enhancement ratios of THz output energy were 6.88× at 3.36 THz, 5.25× at 4.35 THz, 18.21× at 4.79 THz, and 1.82× at 5.69 THz. This injection pulse-seeded THz parametric source based on a KTP crystal is not only suitable to the practical applications in THz high frequency range, but also provides a technical solution for the KTP-family crystals to achieve a continuously tunable and high energy THz generation in a wide THz region.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Room-temperature exciton-polariton-driven self-phase modulation in planar perovskite waveguide

Abstract:Optical nonlinearities are crucial for advanced photonic technologies since they allow photons to be managed by photons. Exciton-polaritons resulting from strong light-matter coupling are hybrid in nature: they combine small mass and high coherence of photons with strong nonlinearity enabled by excitons, making them ideal for ultrafast all-optical manipulations. Among the most prospective polaritonic materials are halide perovskites since they require neither cryogenic temperatures nor expensive fabrication techniques. Here we study strikingly nonlinear self-action of ultrashort polaritonic pulses propagating in planar MAPbBr$_3$ perovskite slab waveguides. Tuning input pulse energy and central frequency, we experimentally observe various scenarios of its nonlinear evolution in the spectral domain, which include peak shifts, narrowing, or splitting driven by self-phase modulation, group velocity dispersion, and self-steepening. The theoretical model provides complementary temporal traces of pulse propagation and reveals the transition from the birth of a doublet of optical solitons to the formation of a shock wave, both supported by the system. Our results represent an important step in ultrafast nonlinear on-chip polaritonics in perovskite-based systems.

Abstract:A 1.8 mu m optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on a noncritically phase-matched KTiOPO4 crystal is demonstrated. OPO and stimulated Raman scattering techniques are successfully combined in an acousto-optically Q-switched Nd:YAG/SrWO4 Raman laser. The device efficiently realizes three steps of conversion: from a laser diode wavelength of 808 nm to the fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm; next, to the Stokes wavelength of 1180 nm; and finally to the OPO signal wavelength of 1810 nm. With an incident diode power of 7.2 W and a pulse repetition rate of 15 kHz, an average signal power of 485 mW is obtained with a diode-to-signal conversion efficiency of 6.75%. The beam quality factors (M-2) of the signal wave in both horizontal and vertical directions are measured to be 1.7 +/- 0.2. The numerical output power results of the system, the thermal lensing, and the stability parameter of the cavity are also discussed. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Photonics in the frequency range of 5 to 15 terahertz (THz) potentially open a new realm of quantum materials manipulations and biosensing. This range, sometimes called "the new terahertz gap", is traditionally difficult to access due to prevalent phonon absorption bands in solids. Low‐loss phonon‐polariton materials may realize sub‐wavelength, on‐chip photonic devices, but typically operate in mid‐infrared frequencies with narrow bandwidths and are difficult to manufacture in large scale. Here for the first time, quantum paraelectric SrTiO3 enables broadband surface phonon‐polaritonic devices in 7–13 THz. As a proof of concept, polarization‐independent field concentrators are designed and fabricated to locally enhance intense, multicycle THz pulses by a factor of 6 and increase the spectral intensity by over 90 times. The time‐resolved electric field inside the concentrators are experimentally measured by THz‐field induced second harmonic generation. Illuminated by a table‐top light source, the average field reaches 0.5 GV/m over a large volume resolvable by far‐field optics. Our results potentially enable scalable THz photonics with high breakdown fields made of various commercially available phonon‐polariton crystals for studying driven phases in quantum materials and nonlinear molecular spectroscopy. Abstract:A KTiOAsO4 (KTA) intracavity optical parametric oscillator (IOPO) is achieved within a diode end-pumped acousto-optically Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. With a 25-mm-long X-cut KTA crystal, efficient parametric conversions to signal (1535 nm) and idler (3467 nm) waves are realized. At an incident diode power of 14.9 W, the highest output power of 1.83 W including 1.37 W of signal and 0.46 W of idler radiations are obtained at a repetition rate of 40 kHz, corresponding to a total optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 12.3%. Rate equations model are used to simulate this system, and the theoretical results agree with the experimental ones.

Abstract:A theoretical analysis and an experimental study are presented on the phase-matching condition of noncollinearly pumped optical parametric oscillators (OPO's) based on a noncritical phase-matching potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) OPO. It is shown that noncollinearly pumped, double-pass, singly resonant optical parametric oscillators maintain the advantage of round-trip parametric gain in a collinear pump, since in this case the two generated signal waves are coherent, which results in high conversion efficiency and low pump threshold. With this KTP OPO we achieved 31% energy conversion efficiency from a 1064-nm pump wave to 1572-nm eye-safe output. In addition, because the incident pump beam is not perpendicular to the OPO cavity mirrors and consequently no reflected beam flows back into the pump source, we can avoid employing optical isolators.

Abstract:We report the experimental demonstration of directly produced polarization squeezing at 1064 nm from a type I optical parametric amplifier (OPA) based on a periodically poled KTP crystal (PPKTP). The orthogonal polarization modes of the polarization squeezed state are both defined by the OPA cavity mode, and the birefringence induced by the PPKTP crystal is compensated for by a second, but inactive, PPKTP crystal. Stokes parameter squeezing of 3.6 dB and anti squeezing of 9.4 dB is observed.

Abstract:We present a detailed numerical investigation of five nonlinear materials and their properties regarding photon-pair creation using parametric downconversion. Periodic poling of ferroelectric nonlinear materials is a convenient way to generate collinearly propagating photon pairs. Most applications and experiments use the well-known potassium titanyl phosphate (KTiOPO4, ppKTP) and lithium niobate (LiNbO3, ppLN) crystals for this purpose. In this article we provide a profound discussion on the family of KTP-isomorphic nonlinear materials, including KTP itself but also the much less common CTA (CsTiOAsO4), KTA (KTiOAsO4), RTA (RbTiOAsO4) and RTP (RbTiOPO4). We discuss in which way these crystals can be used for creation of spectrally pure downconversion states and generation of crystal-intrinsic polarisation- and frequency entanglement. The investigation of the new materials disclosed a whole new range of promising experimental setups, in some cases even outperforming the established materials ppLN and ppKTP.

Abstract:We report a theoretical analysis and numerical simulation of bandwidth and stability enhancement in optical parametric amplification (OPA) when using chirped periodically poled KTiOPO4. Calculation results show that the bandwidth and stability are enhanced significantly by the use of a chirped grating. Temperature-gradient and fanned gratings are introduced and chirp factors of them are deduced and calculated. The use of a fanned grating flattens the Quasi-phase-matching response and improves the efficiency. Finally, we propose a method to reduce the instability induced by an unstable pump.
Resonantly enhanced polariton wave mixing and Floquet parametric instability

Abstract:We introduce a new theoretical approach for analyzing pump and probe experiments in non-linear acousto-optic systems. In our approach, the effect of coherently pumped polaritons is modeled as providing time-periodic modulation of the system parameters. Within this framework, propagation of the probe pulse is described by the Floquet version of Maxwell's equations and leads to such phenomena as frequency mixing and resonant parametric production of polariton pairs. We analyze light reflection from a slab of insulating material with a strongly excited phonon-polariton mode and obtain analytic expressions for the frequency-dependent reflection coefficient for the probe pulse. Our results are in agreement with recent experiments by Cartella et al. which demonstrated light amplification in resonantly excited SiC insulator. We show that, beyond a critical pumping strength, such systems should exhibit Floquet parametric instability, which corresponds to resonant scattering of the pump polaritons into pairs of finite momentum polaritons. We find that the parametric instability should be achievable in SiC using current experimental techniques and discuss its signatures, including the non-analytic frequency dependence of the reflection coefficient and the probe pulse afterglow. We discuss possible applications of the parametric instability phenomenon and suggest that similar types of instabilities can be present in other photoexcited non-linear systems.
Refractive Index-Based Control of Hyperbolic Phonon-Polariton Propagation

Abstract:Hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) are generated when infrared photons couple to polar optic phonons in anisotropic media, confining long-wavelength light to nanoscale volumes. However, to realize the full potential of HPhPs for infrared optics, it is crucial to understand propagation and loss mechanisms on substrates suitable for applications from waveguiding to infrared sensing. We employ scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and nano-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, in concert with analytical and numerical calculations, to elucidate HPhP characteristics as a function of the complex substrate dielectric function. We consider propagation on suspended, dielectric and metallic substrates to demonstrate that the thickness-normalized wavevector can be reduced by a factor of 25 simply by changing the substrate from dielectric to metallic behavior. Moreover, by incorporating the imaginary contribution to the dielectric function in lossy materials, the wavevector can be dynamically controlled by small local variations in loss or carrier density. Counterintuitively, higher-order HPhP modes are shown to exhibit the same change in the polariton wavevector as the fundamental mode, despite the drastic differences in the evanescent ranges of these polaritons. However, because polariton refraction is dictated by the fractional change in the wavevector, this still results in significant differences in polariton refraction and reduced sensitivity to substrate-induced losses for the higher-order HPhPs. Such effects may therefore be used to spatially separate hyperbolic modes of different orders and for index-based sensing schemes. Our results advance our understanding of fundamental hyperbolic polariton excitations and their potential for on-chip photonics and planar metasurface optics.

Abstract:Hyperbolic polaritons that originate from the extreme optical anisotropy in van der Waals (vdW) crystals have gained much attention for their potential in controlling nanolight. For practical use, there has been a strong interest to develop various manipulation strategies to customize the propagation of hyperbolic polaritons on a deeply sub-diffractional scale. In this regard, phase-change materials (PCMs) that possess two phases with different refractive indices offer suitably a tunable dielectric environment. Here, we report on the tuning of hyperbolic phonon polaritons in natural vdW crystals, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), and alpha-phase molybdenum trioxide (α-MoO 3 ), using the plasmonic phase-change material In 3 SbTe 2 (IST). Unlike conventional PCMs whose both phases are dielectric, IST features a metallic crystalline phase that is stable at room temperature. The coupling between polaritons with their mirror charges in the underneath crystalline IST triggers an even stronger field confinement for polaritons. Moreover, benefited from the metallicity of laser-writable crystalline IST, we show an all-optical material platform in which crystalline IST boundaries efficiently excite and focus hyperbolic phonon polaritons in α-MoO 3 . Our experiments highlight the possibility to obtain new degrees of freedom in polariton engineering with plasmonic PCMs, thereby expanding the toolkit of tunable nanophotonics with flexible, on-demand fabrication and reconfiguration capabilities.

Investigations on saturable absorption characteristic of PdS 2 and its application to high-peak-power sub-nanosecond intracavity OPO

Abstract:In this work, a unique pentagonal TMD material, palladium disulfide (PdS 2 ) nanosheets were fabricated by the liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) process, and the physical characteristics were also investigated. The nonlinear transmittance is measured by the power scanning method and the modulation depth is fitted to be 15.3%. Based on the transmittance curve, the saturable absorption parameters of PdS 2 are calculated, including 5.85 × 10 −19 cm 2 ground-state absorption cross-section, 1.63 × 10 −19 cm 2 excited-state absorption cross-section, and 683.5 μs excited-state lifetime. By employing both PdS 2 as a saturable absorber (SA) and an acousto-optic modulator (AOM), a doubly Q-switched and mode-locked (QML) laser-pumped intracavity KTiOPO4 (KTP) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) was realized. The pulse energy and the pulse width of the Q-switched envelope for signal wave have been measured. At higher pump power, the high-peak-power low-repetition-rate sub-nanosecond mode-locking pulse of signal wave is generated, in which there is only one mode-locked pulse underneath a Q-switched envelope. The measured shortest signal pulse duration is 530 ps, corresponding to a peak power of 337 kW, at an incident pump power of 9.81 W and an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) repetition rate of 1 kHz. In addition, by considering the Gauss distribution of intracavity photon density, a set of coupled rate equations for a doubly QML laser-pumped intracavity OPO was given and the numerical simulations agreed with the experimental results. These results indicate that PdS 2 is a promising nonlinear optical material for optical applications in the near-infrared (NIR) region.

Dynamically Tuned Arrays of Polariton Parametric Oscillators

Abstract:Optical parametric oscillations (OPOs) - a non-linear process involving the coherent coupling of an optically excited two particle pump state to a signal and an idler states with different energies - is a relevant mechanism for optical amplification as well as for the generation of correlated photons. OPOs require states with well-defined symmetries and energies: the fine-tuning of material properties and structural dimensions to create these states remains a challenge for the realization of scalable OPO-based functionalities in semiconductor nanostructures. Here, we demonstrate a pathway towards this goal based on the control of confined microcavity exciton-polaritons modulated by the spatially and time varying dynamical potentials produced by a surface acoustic waves (SAW). The exciton-polariton are confined in um-sized intra-cavity traps fabricated by structuring a planar semiconductor microcavity during the epitaxial growth process. OPOs in these structures benefit from the enhanced non-linearities of confined systems. We show that SAW fields induce state-dependent and time-varying energy shifts, which enable the energy alignment of the confined levels with the appropriate symmetry for OPO triggering. Furthermore, the dynamic acoustic tuning, which is fully described by a theoretical model for the modulation of the confined polaritons by the acoustic field, compensates for fluctuations in symmetry and dimensions of the confinement potential thus enabling a variety of dynamic OPO regimes. The robustness of the acoustic tuning is demonstrated by the synchronous excitation of an array of confined OPOs using a single acoustic beam, thus opening the way for the realization of scalable non-linear on-chip systems.

Theoretical and experimental studies on passively Q -switched KTiOAsO 4 optical parametric oscillator

Abstract:A passively Q -switched intracavity optical parametric oscillator based on KTiOAsO 4 (KTA) crystal is studied theoretically and experimentally. The rate-equation-based theoretical model is established to describe the time evolutions of the population inversion density of the laser crystal, ground-state population density of the saturable absorber, fundamental photon density, signal photon density and the idler photon density. In the experiment, a laser diode-end pumped, passively Q -switched Nd:YAG/KTA IOPO with a Cr 4+ :YAG crystal as the saturable absorber is realized to verify this model. The characteristics including the output power, the pulse repetition rate, the pulse width and the beam quality were investigated for this OPO. The experimental results for the output power and the repetition rate agree with the theory well. And both results show that with same pumping level the idler pulse width is shorter than the signal one.

Abstract:A periodically poled KTa1–xNbxO3 (PPKTN) device was fabricated as one‐dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal for nonlinear optical conversion. The quasi‐phase‐matchable second harmonic generation (1030 → 515 nm and 5.0 → 2.5 μm) is realized with high conversion efficiency, thus indicating that PPKTN is a promising candidate for broadband mid‐infrared parametric conversion and on‐chip photonics. Since the first proposal of quasi‐phase‐matching (QPM) in 1962, finding new nonlinear photonic crystals has been an attractive topic in nonlinear optics fields. However, combining high conversion efficiency and wide operation range concurrently into one single crystal remains a great challenge. Herein, a periodically poled KTa0.51Nb0.49O3 (PPKTN) is fabricated as a one‐dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal for the first time, to the authors' best knowledge. Benefitting from the large quadratic nonlinear coefficient, the QPM second harmonic generation (SHG) at 1030 nm is realized with a high conversion efficiency of up to 39%. More importantly, KTN crystal possesses wider mid‐infrared spectral transparency (0.4–8.0 μm) than commercialized LiNbO3 and KTiOPO4. A 5 μm SHG is first achieved with a conversion efficiency of 6.3%, indicating that it is a promising candidate for broadband mid‐infrared parametric conversion. This work promotes PPKTN as a new nonlinear photonic platform to achieve highly efficient optical waveguide, holography, information storage, and all‐optical chips.
