Abstract:An ice sheet moving against an offshore jacket structure may induce severe structural vibrations and cause subsequent consequences such as structural fatigue and crew discomfort. Ice-breaking cones have been installed to reduce ice actions and to eliminate severe ice-induced vibrations (IIV) on compliant vertical jacket structures. However, ice-induced vibrations still act on jacket structures provided with ice-breaking cones. This paper proposes two dimensionless parameters to reinvestigate ice-induced vibrations of compliant conical structures: the dimensionless acceleration of the structure and the dimensionless velocity of the ice sheet. According to an analysis of published model test data, a linear relationship between these two proposed dimensionless parameters may exist, provided that the ice velocity is the only variable factor of the ice-structure interaction scenario. Subsequently, the proposed approach in this paper is used to analyze the in-field data from a fixed conical jacket platform, and it is found that the linear relationship between the two proposed dimensionless parameters is valid if uncertainties were properly considered. While such a linear relationship depends both on the ice conditions and the structure, this paper demonstrates that the proposed dimensionless methodology can be used to analyze the effect of ice velocity on ice-induced vibrations of compliant conical structures.
