Abstract:We propose a new recording system that employs a spherical wave and a toroidal wave to holographically record an aberration-reduced Rowland-circle spherical grating. Two more variables in this recording system are available for the design compared with a conventional symmetric dual-plane-wave recording system, which allows both the astigmatism and sagittal coma of the grating to be corrected to minimum. We derive the aberration coefficients of such grating and give the universal design principles for the recording system. An aberration-reduced grating used in a spectrometer equipped with linear array CCDs is then specifically designed and fabricated. The performances of the aberration-reduced grating and that of the conventional grating recorded by dual plane waves are compared in terms of the ray-tracing spot diagrams, and the photographed spectral images. The experimental results show that the spectral intensity of the aberration-reduced grating is about 4.5 times that of the conventional grating, while the resolution of the aberration-reduced grating is close to that of the conventional grating.

Abstract:A new design and fabrication of flat optical lens by use of 90-degree volume holographic grating recording geometry is presented. It is recorded by the interference of a plane wave and a spherical wave in a Fe-doped LiNbO3. The flat optical lens can laterally transfer and focus the plane wave which perpendicularly incidents on the planar crystal surface. The optimal switching from recording to thermal fixing is taken into consideration in order to obtain the nonvolatile hologram with maximum fixing efficiency. The flat optical lens with different recording and reconstructing wavelength has also been discussed. The flat optical lens has the advantages of light weight, laterally transferring and focusing, small duty ratio, and easy for the microstructure integration. The testing results measured verify that the flat optical lens can successfully be used for the free space optical communication.

Abstract:Ion-beam etching blazed flat-field concave diffraction gratings (FFCG) to achieve high diffraction efficiency is a difficult task. This paper presents a new method to fabricate convex holographic gratings as master gratings for making FFCG. This method makes it convenient to fabricate blazed FFCG with corrected aberrations and uniform predetermined blaze angle over the grating surfaces. It can also be adapted to the commercial fabrication process. This method could be briefly described as follows: First, we make a convex grating using holographic recording method. The grooves are determined by the interference fringes of two spherical waves, one of which is divergent coming from the back side of the substrate, and the other is convergent coming from the front side. Leading-term aberrations can be corrected by optimizing the center positions of the two sphere waves. Second, the exposed convex grating is etched by ion beam to make a blazed convex grating. In this step, it is much easier to get a uniform blaze angle over the surface of a convex grating than over the surface of a concave grating. At last, the etched convex grating is used directly as a master grating to replicate blazed FFCG. An optimized example for a specific system structure is given in this paper. The advantages and difficulties of the method are discussed.

Abstract:This paper proposed a diffractive imaging technology called rotary astigmatic diffractive imaging (RADI). The system uses a rotatable cylindrical lens for rotary astigmatic modulation and a camera for collecting the diffractive patterns distorted in different angles. Then a field can be reconstructed with the patterns by an iterative algorithm. Compared with the original astigmatic diffractive imaging system, our simulations show RADI system has the greater performance of convergence with the same number of constrained patterns. In addition, it is easy for RADI to increase the number of diffraction measurements to accelerate the convergence further. Considering the center of the cylindrical lens does not coincide with the center of rotation, a calibration method is proposed. An optical vortex of charge two is reconstructed experimentally demonstrating the system can solve the problem of unique phase recovery. Besides, the reconstructions of a USAF resolution chart with different numbers of constrained patterns shows the rate of convergence increases obviously with the increase of the number of diffraction measurements. The reconstruction shows the resolution of our system is about 14.25 lp/mm, which is 60% of the diffraction limited resolution. Our RADI can provide a high-performance way but with simple setup to realize field reconstruction.

Abstract:The combination of holographic gratings with freeform surface technology has led to a significant breakthrough in terms of the performance of imaging spectrometers. In this paper, a general direct design method that is capable of designing imaging spectrometers that include holographic gratings based on a complex-shaped surface substrate and their corresponding recording systems is proposed. The most important feature of this method is that the recording and imaging systems are designed within one optical system model, thus allowing for an optimal balance to be achieved between the aberration correction capability and the manufacturability of the holographic grating. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, three imaging spectrometers were designed that used holographic gratings manufactured by a recording system without auxiliary mirrors, a system with a spherical auxiliary mirror, and a system with a freeform auxiliary mirror. Ultimately, these three systems all achieved diffraction-limited imaging quality with minimal distortion.
Theoretical Study of Recording Varied Line Spacing Plane Holographic Gratings by Using Auxiliary Gratings

Abstract:Due to the ability of self-focusing and aberration-eliminating, varied line spacing holographic gratings have been the significant elements in high-resolution spectrometers and synchrotron radiation monochromators. Uniform line spacing plane gratings are introduced into recording systems to generate aspheric wavefronts to record varied line spacing plane holographic gratings. Analytical expressions of groove parameters are derived up to the forth order with ray-tracing theory of geometry optics. A numerical ray-tracing algorithm is provided based on Fermat's principle. A varied line spacing holographic grating is designed by applying the derived forth order expressions of grating parameters. Other diffractive light will not disturb the recording process when the recording parameters are properly selected. According to the design example, theoretical groove density parameters are very close to the required value. The truncation error of series expansion is less than 1.5 lines in the recording area through the validation of numerical ray-tracing algorithm. Considering the tolerances in practical fabrication, this mounting is not sensitive to the errors of recording parameters. Design results demonstrate the exactness of analytical expressions, and the superiority of recording optics with auxiliary gratings.

Abstract:This research proposes a feedback method to adjust the dual-beam exposure system with spherical collimation lenses to achieve gratings with low spacing error. Through theoretical analysis and numerical calculation, it is proved that the interference aberration can be analyzed with the Zernike polynomials and the adjustment errors can be estimated according to the linear relationship between the errors and the polynomial coefficients. Moreover moving the substrate along its normal is proposed to decrease the spacing error but keep the grating's period unchanged. In the experiments, the wavefront measurement results of the ± 1st orders are used to deduce the spacing error. Based on the feedback adjustment method, the grating with a spacing error of 0.03 λ within 70 mm × 70 mm is fabricated with the collimation lenses of 0.6 λ spherical aberration.

Abstract:Traditional Rowland-circle concave gratings suffer large aberrations especially in the case of flat-field receiving. With the development of vertical photolithography, the fabrication of gratings with arbitrary profile and groove distribution comes into practice. To overcome the restrictions existing in the traditional geometries, a general iterative design geometry based on the optical path function is developed in this paper. The structure of a grating is determined by two explicit of implied constraint equations containing the grating profile and the groove function. Constraints in some typical cases are studied. Finally some numerical examples of flat-field concave gratings for micro-spectrometer are shown by the proposed equations. The aberration of the device based on stigmatic points can be lower than λ/4.

Abstract:Variable Line-Space gratings play an important role in focusing and aberration-reduced. They are widely used in spatial spectrum and synchrotron radiation facilities. However the design and fabrication methods of them are difficult. The problem is to be able to record holographically the expected grooves distribution. The geometric theory of aspheric wave-front recording optics is briefly described. We introduce the genetic algorithm to the parameters optimization of holographic variable line-space gratings. In order to obtain a steady set of recording parameters, we propose that the objective function of the genetic algorithm should consider the effect of the recording parameters errors. The integral expression of the objective function is also derived to improve the efficiency of calculation. Design example of holographic variable line-space plane gratings for a position sensor is given to demonstrate the capability of this method. The line-profiles of variable line-space plane gratings with different recording parameters are also compared in this paper.

Abstract:Gratings with low diffracted wavefront errors are crucial in many applications. Existing methods to reduce the diffracted wavefront errors of holographically produced gratings mainly address misalignment errors during exposure system adjustment, leaving the inevitable residual errors of collimation lenses uncorrected. The broad-beam scanning exposure method was recently proposed to fabricate gratings with large size and low stray light. We explore its ability to reduce the diffracted wavefront errors caused by both system misalignment and lens errors. During the exposure, the substrate translates in the direction perpendicular to the grating lines to pass through the exposure area, so the aberrations over different parts of the interference field along the scanning path are averaged. We prove the validity of this method by a theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. The averaging effect on different aberrations and with different scanning lengths is discussed. The peak-valley values of diffracted wavefront errors of gratings fabricated with an exposure field of defocus aberration and a more complicated aberration were reduced by 42.5% and 50%, respectively. Abstract:We present a new design for the fabrication of concave gratings with large grating constants for flat-field miniature spectrometers with a wide spectral band. In this new design, one of the two optical paths for the holographic lithography of a curved grating structure with variable line spacing is modified by adding a concave lens in front of the point source. The addition of the concave lens allows the real point source, as well as the spatial filter for generating this point source, to be moved back. In this manner, the two spatial filters for generating two point sources are separated. Avoiding the physical conflict between these two spatial filters reduces the difficulty of fabricating large-constant concave gratings. Experimental results verify the feasibility of the proposed design in fabricating concave gratings with large grating constants. The resolution of a spectrometer using the fabricated concave grating is evaluated and found to be better than 1.1 nm across a spectral band ranging from 360 nm to 825 nm.
A Method of Fabricating Wide Spectrum Flat-Field Concave Grating with Compensation Concave Lens

Abstract:Flat-field concave diffraction grating is the key component of a portable grating spectrometer, which integrates three optical properties: dispersion, imaging, and flat spectral image in a single device. In recent years, fabricating concave grating has attracted much attention. However, the distance between two exposure light sources in the fabrication light system are often short, which makes it difficult to build the fabrication structure, sometimes even impossible. In order to solve this problem, two methods have been adopted. One is using special microscope objectives, but it reduces the system's ability of eliminating of aberrations. The other way is building spatial filters respectively, but this adds the difficulty of the system installing and adjustment, furthermore, it makes it impossible to fabricate wide spectrum FCDG. In this paper, a method to increase the distance between the two exposure light sources is proposed by using a compensation mirror. The use of compensation mirror can not only reduce the difficulty of fabricating grating, but also achieve results almost as better as that of the two original exposure points. We calculated the two new exposure points position with Matlab, and then performed system modeling, simulation and optimization in the Zemax software. A theoretical analysis is given to show that the proposed method can ensure the spectral image quality and greatly reduce the fabrication difficulty.

Abstract:Flat-field concave diffraction grating is the key device of a portable grating spectrometer with the advantage of integrating dispersion, focusing and flat-field in a single device. It directly determines the quality of a spectrometer. The most important two performances determining the quality of the spectrometer are spectral image quality and diffraction efficiency. The diffraction efficiency of a grating depends mainly on its groove shape. But it has long been a problem to get a uniform predetermined groove shape across the whole concave grating area, because the incident angle of the ion beam is restricted by the curvature of the concave substrate, and this severely limits the diffraction efficiency and restricts the application of concave gratings. the authors present a two-step method for designing convex gratings, which are made holographically with two exposure point sources placed behind a plano-convex transparent glass substrate, to solve this problem. The convex gratings are intended to be used as the Master gratings for making aberration-corrected flat-field concave gratings. To achieve high spectral image quality for the replicated concave gratings, the refraction effect at the planar back surface and the extra optical path lengths through the substrate thickness experienced by the two divergent recording beams are considered during optimization. This two-step method combines the optical-path-length function method and the ZEMAX software to complete the optimization with a high success rate and high efficiency. In the first step, the optical-path-length function method is used without considering the refraction effect to get an approximate optimization result. In the second step, the approximate result of the first step is used as the initial value for ZEMAX to complete the optimization including the refraction effect. An example of design problem was considered. The simulation results of ZEMAX proved that the spectral image quality of a replicated concave grating is comparable with that of a directly recorded concave grating.

Abstract:Variable line-spacing gratings are widely used in spacial spectroscopic and synchrotron radiation devices, but their design and fabrication are difficult. In this paper, the geometrical theory of aspheric wave-front recording optics is briefly reviewed. The genetic algorithm is introduced to optimize parameters of holographic variable line-spacing gratings. In order to improve the efficiency of calculation. the integral expression of the objective function is also derived. Design example of holographic variable line-spacing gratings for position sensor is given to demonstrate the capability of this method. Holographic variable line-spacing gratings with large density gradient are fabricated successfully.

Numerical Simulation and Experimental Demonstration of Error Compensation Between Recording Structure and Use Structure of Flat-Field Holographic Concave Gratings

Abstract:A flat-field holographic concave grating can be the only optical element in a spectrometer. If the mutually compensating roles of the concave grating and the spectrometer are taken into account, the difficulty of fabricating concave grating can be reduced. When the holographic method is used to make concave gratings, it is very difficult to fix precisely the spatial distances between the two recording points and the vertex of concave gratings. In like manner, it is also difficult to fix precisely the location of the entrance slit or the CCD in using concave gratings in spectrometers. In other words, during the fabrication stage and the end-use stage of concave gratings, there are inevitable errors between the practical system structure parameters and the theoretical ones. The authors name them fabrication structure errors and end-use structure errors, respectively. Numerical simulation indicates that these two classes of errors will seriously deteriorate the spectral image quality. At present, there are few references describing the elimination of the fabrication and end-use errors of concave gratings. In this paper, a concave grating used in a compact chromatograph is analyzed as an example. By performing numerical simulations that take both fabrication structure parameters and end-use structure parameters into consideration, we found that in a large neighborhood around the design point, the two sets of parameters can mutually compensate. This means that even both sets are away from the optimized design points, as long as proper compensations are made, the spectral image quality of the spectrometer can be as good as designed. In other words, on the one hand, for a specific concave grating that has been made with some fabrication structure errors, we can move the CCD to find an appropriate location where the spectral image quality is as good as designed; On the other hand, for a decided end-use system which has some end-use structure errors, we can adjust the fabrication structure to make concave gratings that will generate good spectral images in this end-use system. The experiment results show that this method is an effective way to adjust the optical system for grating fabrication. The authors also give experimental results that agree with simulation results. Such compensation can reduce both the alignment difficulty and the required precision of fabrication structure parameters of concave gratings. It could also give theoretical guidance to the design and assembly of spectrometers.

Abstract:Uniform line spacing plane gratings are introduced into a recording system to generate aspherical wavefronts for recording varied line spacing plane holographic gratings. Analytical expressions of groove parameters are derived to the fourth order. A ray-tracing validation algorithm is provided based on Fermat's principle and a local search method. The recording parameters are optimized to record a varied line spacing plane holographic grating with the aid of derived analytical expressions. Abstract:A conjugate recording/readout method is described for volume holographic disk system. The principle of the coupled wave analysis is given for the dynamic processes of the volume holographic gratings. The formation of gratings under the conjugate method and the corresponding diffraction efficiency are studied experimentally with the cationic ringopening photopolymerization (CROP) material. Results show that the method helps to enhance the holographic recording/readout process with a higher speed. It can also reduce the non-uniform exposure along the beam inside the material. With this conjugate structure, low-power semiconductor laser diodes are applicable and the recording speed is greatly increased, which will promote the compact and commercialization of the volume holographic photopolymer disk system.
Holographic Fabrication of Two-Dimensional Scale Gratings for Surface Encoder by Using an Orthogonal Type Two-Axis Lloyd's Mirror Interference Lithography

Abstract:In this paper, an orthogonal type two-axis Lloyd’s mirror interference lithography technique was employed to fabricate two-dimensional planar scale gratings for surface encoder application. The two-axis Lloyd’s mirror interferometer is composed of a substrate and two reflective mirrors, which are placed edge by edge perpendicularly. An expanded and collimated beam was divided into three beams by this interferometer, a direct beam and two reflected beam. The unnecessary beam section was blocked by a home designed filter. These two reflected beams interfere with the direct beam respectively, generates perpendicularly cross patterns for forming two-dimensional scale gratings. The two reflected beams also interfere with each other and generate an undesired grating pattern along a 45 degree direction, which influence the pattern uniformity in a certain degree. The undesired grating pattern can be eliminated by polarization modulation, yet which will influence the grating area. Theoretical and experimental study was carefully carried out to evaluate the fabrication quality with and without polarization modulation. Two-dimensional scale gratings with a 1 μm period in X- and Y-directions were achieved by using the constructed experiment system with a 442 nm HeCd laser source. Atomic force microscope (AFM) images and diffraction performances verified that the two-axis Lloyd’s mirror interferometer with a small undesired interference between two reflected beams under an order of nominal value of 0.1 can provide a better fabrication result for scale gratings application.
